Anyone know why felix is in and reed left the game
I don't know the score because I'm Indy and don't get the game. If we have a big lead as a grand slam would suggest. It's for defensive purposes.

Jason Marquis owns at hitting.
Also nice to see D Lee hit that homer tonight, as well. That one was a no doubter. Can't say that too often for Derrek. A good sign, for sure.

Not necessarily. An extra day of rest could work wonders for the guy. His stuff is very "touchy" it seems, and if he doesn't have the control or the extra oomph on his pitches, that can be the difference between giving up 6 runs in 2 innings or 1 run in 8 innings. I don't see the point of putting Z out there on short rest one start and extra-long rest the next. That's not the pattern he's been in all year. Ideally you'd like to stick as close as you can to that pattern and regularity, IMO.
I mean, I know Lilly gave up four runs in the 6th the other day, but the guy has had some excellent starts lately. At this point I don't really have too many worries about Ted. Since the beginning of August, he's had 7/10 quality starts, and he gave up 4 runs in two of those other three starts. He can keep us in the ballgame. He went head to head with Sabathia and kept us in the game.
Zambrano threw a no hitter, and ya he sucked in his last start. But you yourself are talking about how important patterns are. Being in Venezuela and not doing your normal side stuff didn't help him prepare for his last start.
Regardless, if I were you I'd hate Zambrano. What kind of shit orginization gives a guy $92 million who wouldn't be your number 1 starter in a playoff series.

Anything could happen in the playoffs. That's why you'll see Wild Card teams get hot at the right time and win it all. But be serious now. The Cubs have been the best team in the Nation League all season. They have the best run differential in all of baseball. That's not an easy thing to do.
In the NL the Cubs are 1st in runs scored, and 2nd in runs allowed. Now can the Phillies beat the Cubs? Sure, but any team can beat any team. No reason to trash talk, when we're kicking the crap out of a team you've had trouble with all year.

NEW YORK -- Sean Marshall will start on Tuesday against the Mets as manager Lou Piniella tweaks the rotation in preparation for next week's National League Division Series.
Rich Harden, who is 5-1 with a 1.66 ERA with the Cubs, had been slated to start the second game of the four-game series against the Mets but was pushed back to Thursday.
Marshall will be followed by Carlos Zambrano (14-6, 3.77 ERA).
There is nothing wrong with Harden to prompt the Cubs to push back the right-hander, Piniella said.
"Harden says it's the best he's felt," Piniella said on Monday, "but we're starting to get ourselves rearranged for the postseason, also. We don't have anything to tell you as far as our rotation for the postseason yet, but we will, some time during the Milwaukee series. We want to see everybody pitch, and we want to see who our opponent is."
Ryan Dempster (17-6, 2.99 ERA) is scheduled to open the Cubs' series at Milwaukee on Friday, followed by Ted Lilly (16-9, 4.17 ERA).
The rearranged rotation does not mean that the Cubs are ready to announce who will start Game 1 of the NLDS.
"I'm not going to talk about Game 1 or anything until we see everybody pitch and find out who our opponent is," Piniella said.
So this will pan out with:
23rd: @ NYM - Marshall
24th: @ NYM - Zambrano
25th: @ NYM - Harden
26th: @ MIL - Dempster
27th: @ MIL - Lilly
28th: @ MIL - Marshall/Marquis
29th: @ HOU - Marshall/Marquis (if needed)
The story did go on to say Marshall may start the last game, in case you wonder why I put Marshall/Marquis. I hope not though, I'd rather them call up someone from AAA. The playoffs start on the 1st. I want to have all the arms ready to go.

You mean to tell me that you'd rather have to potentially play a division team that knows everything there is to know about us who we have dominated this season, making continued domination all the less likely? That's the way it always turns out. Not to mention that if we were to play and then somehow lose to the Brewers it would sting that much more.

Let's not get carried away. Pie is no improvement over Fukudome. His speed is the only advantage. Fukudome is an excellent defender as well, has experience, and you know he won't make dumb mistakes. He also takes a lot of walks. Sure his bat sucks, but hey, he had a nice game yesterday. Maybe Fukudome is also heating up?
I think it's interesting that we have that last series against the Brewers before the game against Houston. If we swept the Brewers, that would make it more likely we would have to play Houston. That makes the situation Houston was put in with the hurricane even worse, because we could basically tank so we wouldn't have to play that extra day, which would probably be considered a disadvantage by most.
In all likelihood, the Astros won't even be in it anyway, but it's still a bad situation for them.

The Tribune Company set up Wrigley Field Premium Ticket Services (http://www.wrigleyfieldpremium.com/). Before the season even starts the Cubs take the good seats and sell them to WFPTS for face. WFPTS then can scalp the tickets at street market rate. There is some accounting trickery going on here also, but lets just limit this post to the scalping theme. So basically, the Cubs and their owner, The Tribune Company set up a ticket broker to try to harvest some of the "lost" revenue that other scalpers or season ticket holders were receiving. So be it.
Ya, and wouldn't you know it. I went to the Website and there's a link to Stubhub if you click "Buy Tickets Now". So you are basically buying these ticekts from the Cubs. They just want to make what all the scalpers make.
Yes people have tried to put a stop to this, but the Tribune always wins those rulings. I hope to god whoever the new owner is, they stop this bullshit. Not that I see a reason why they would.

Bars and restaurants around Wrigley Field that ignore the city’s call to voluntarily cut off liquor sales after the seventh inning could face a dire alternative: Area residents could vote them dry, Mayor Daley warned Tuesday.
One day after bar owners reacted angrily to the city’s proposal, Daley defended it as "common sense." He argued that Cubs fans who’ve been drinking up until the seventh-inning stretch of potential title-clinching games need, what he called, "some smoothing time" before the celebration begins in earnest.
The proposed sevenh-inning cut-off would apply only to potential title-clinching games and last until the game is over. It would affect roughly 40 establishments on Sheffield between Newport and Irving; on Clark from Irving Park to Newport and on Addison from Wilton to Racine.
Despite the mayor's vigorous defense, local Ald. Tom Tunney (44th) has not yet signed on to Daley’s proposal. Tunney, owner of Ann Sather’s restaurants and a former liquor license holder, said bar owners need to have their say at a meeting Monday.
Tunney said the Daley administration initially wanted the seventh- inning cut-off to apply to all playoff games, not just potential title clinchers. They also wanted to implement it last weekend, when the Cubs clinched the Central Division championship.
"I said there wasn't enough notice," he said.

Pie, Hoffpauir in roster battle
NEW YORK -- The Cubs have one non-pitching roster decision to make before the playoffs, and it might be harder to stage the tryouts than to make the decision.
Manager Lou Piniella said he wants to look at two or three September call-ups this week to help decide which one makes the roster when the team likely drops a pitcher for the postseason.
Outfielder Felix Pie, who made last year's postseason roster for bench speed and late-inning defense, and the Cubs' minor-league player of the year, first baseman/outfielder Micah Hoffpauir, seem to be the front-runners for that opening. Infielder Casey McGehee also is in the mix.
As for the rest of the postseason pitching staff, Piniella said he's playing with two possible scenarios -- one in which he carries 11 pitchers, the other in which he sticks with the 12-man staff he carried most of the season. He said the 11-man staff is more likely.
And despite dropping Marquis (3.74 ERA since June) from the rotation, Piniella suggested he will be on the playoff roster.
Given that Hoffpauir only plays First Base and Left Field. Even without Lee's recent power surge, he wasn't getting benched. Also given the fact that Piniella will likely go with Ward over Hoffpauir, whether you agree with that or not, in a pinch hitting situation.
The only question I have is, how can it not be Pie? If Ward gets on, here comes Pie to pinch run. If you have a lead late? Here comes Pie to play center. Also given the fact he's been hitting recently, I'd just rather have him.

Team with the best record (the Cubs), play the Wild Card. If the Wild Card team is from the same division, you then play the division leader with the weakest record. So I'd have to check the standings, but ya I believe it be the Dodgers. Though until the standings are final, anything can change.

The cover looks great, it's just not an ideal time for it. So let SI pile it on, hopefully this team can fight through everything that's going to be put in front of them and get the 11 wins in October!!

Nebraska didn't have that epic of a streak, but in 1996 their 26 game winning streak was snapped by SI after Ahman Green was on the cover. The next game they played in Tempe they got shutout, 19-0.

Actually we lost last night against the Mets (whom Merkle played for) so if anything its a good thing that we lost to them last night.
As for curses, fuck that, this team self destructs all the time 2003 2007 the most recent examples of this. However, I really doubt that an SI cover will crush all the records they have broken this year. It feels like its time, and the team seems to be slumping at the right times which is half the battle.

We all need to get some 'Love Me Tenders' Cubs shirts.
CHICAGO -- The Cubs have a "good-cluck" charm. It's a staple of the clubhouse, more popular than Carlos Zambrano's bobblehead collection.
It's a gray cotton blend T-shirt that hangs in most lockers, resembling that rag you throw on when everything else is dirty.
"Love Me Tenders, the official chicken of the Cubs," the shirt reads in red and blue letters. Everybody who's anybody can be seen wearing it at press conferences, while working out or under their jerseys during games. Why is it so popular? Comfort.
"Everybody wears them, everybody loves them," said starting pitcher Jason Marquis, who requested a few extra Love Me Tenders shirts to wear in the offseason. "It just feels nice on your body when you wear it."
It all started with a Zambrano photo op in April.
"Carlos put it on and immediately said, 'Wow, these are fantastic. I want to keep this shirt,' and he started wearing it around the clubhouse," said Matthew Wszolek, the Cubs' director of sales and promotions. "Next thing you know, it's monkey see, monkey do."
The idea for the shirt hatched in a coed softball league. A team comprised of marketing personnel for Love Me Tenders decided on the design for uniforms as a way to get the word out for the young company.
Derrek Lee wore it for a five-minute interview on ESPN's "Pardon the Interruption" in June. Lou Piniella had it on during a postgame press conference after being ejected against the Marlins on July 26. In August, Detroit Red Wings hockey star Chris Chelios requested one to wear while singing "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" and Ryan Dempster hooked him up.
Opposing players are catching on, too. At the request of Adam LaRoche and Matt Capps, Marquis sent a couple of shirts to the Pirates. They'll just have to cover up that pesky Cubs logo.
A part of the story I didn't copy and paste into here. Said that the shirt are 1-0 in championships. As the softball team that wears them won it all.

Marshall offically made the post-season roster:
"Our guy matched [Santana] pitch for pitch there, and actually was doing a little better until the fifth inning," Cubs manager Lou Piniella said. "We need to get [Marshall] back in the bullpen, where he can help us in the middle. He'll pitch a little in the middle in the Milwaukee series to get ready for postseason."
Marshall was happy at the news.
"That's the first I've heard, and it's a positive for me," the lefty said.

69: the Mets won 38 of their last 49 games and ended up winning 100 games (that's hard to contend with, even if you are up by 8 in august)
84: Screwed by the MLB because Wrigley didn't have lights and so lost home field advantage; also, leon durham couldn't field a ball
89: just not that great
98: just not that great
2003: Gonzo can't field a sure double play ball; and really, this team was also not that great if you look back at their numbers.
2007: just not that great
there are no curses there. only mediocre teams and infielders that made stupid mistakes under a lot of pressure. the redsox? they could gripe about a curse. they had some damn good teams over the course of their drought. the cubs have had 7 playoff teams since 1945. the braves won one WS in ten years of going to the playoffs every year. THERE. IS. NO. CURSE. just bad ownership, bad management, and bad teams.
this team? they're pretty good. if they get to the nlcs and something weird happens, then, sure, we can talk about curses. out of that list above, though, only the 84 team was even close to this team in talent.

But why sit them now? You see it all the time. People sit, and they go into the playoffs cold. Don't let play a full game against the Brewers, but keep your hitters in a rhythm. Especially a guy like D-Lee who's power is coming back.
Plus Lee said it's an advantage to play the Mets. They get to learn the pitchers this way.
fuck that sit them. i don't want any of them to get hurt a week before the playoffs

The chances of them getting hurt are very unlikely. What if they get hurt in the playoffs? I'm not saying we shouldn't rest them, but don't over rest them.
I think Lou is doing it the right way. The other night he gave Soto and Lee the night off. Soto has the night off again tonight. Sutcliffe just said Lee really wants to play tomorrow, because he's never seen this version of Pedro Martinez.

Awesomeness all around last night.....and I didn't even get to see any of the game past the top of the 1st, we had to stand in line to get into the Robert Randolph show.
I had to keep track of the score on my phone. Right as they opened the doors we went down 5-1, but I tried to not get too bummed out because I was about to see RR&FB.
During the opening band we tied it up and then took the lead.
Mets came back during the break.
Top of the 10th started as RR&FB took the stage. I found out we went up 9-6 during Good Times and then found out we won during I Need More Love....I went fucking nuts and started dancing the night away. Fucking pure awesomeness!!
The fever is spreading about 500 miles to the west of Wrigley....Someone at the show had a Fukudome jersey and I saw a ton of Cubs hats....Can't wait for the madness to start next Wednesday.

And if the Brewers need the Mets to lose to get in, that would not help us out at all. So I hope the game does happen. Not only to have Harden go tonight but also I doubt you guys want to play a rescheduled game.
