He's got 5/6 innings max.
That I can guarantee.
Harden said this is the healthiest he's felt all year. Piniella said they aren't going to limit his pitch count tonight, let him work a full load. Because he'll have all those days extra days off, they're going to try and stretch him out a bit.

Piniella selects Dempster as Game 1 starter

Cubs manager Lou Piniella made it official today that Ryan Dempster will start Game 1 of the playoffs.

"He deserves it," Piniella said. "He's 14-3 at home, and he's been extremely consistent and reliable all season long."

If the first-round series goes five games, Dempster (17-6, 2.99 ERA) would be able to pitch Games 1 and 5 at Wrigley Field.
This only makes sense if Piniella is going with a 4 man rotation in the NLDS. Last year he had the Game 1 Starter, Zambrano, scheduled to go in Games 1 & 4.

Which made me believe he'd do that again with Zambrano. That way Dempster could start Games 2 & 5 which would both be at Wrigley. They're speculating if Zambrano would start Game 3. Which I would hate, because lets say it's the Mets. I don't want Z pitching at Shea again.

Hoffpauir is the first Cub ever with 5 hits at Shea stadium. If I'm not mistaken you can change your playoff roster each round. I could be wrong about that, but I think that's correct.

I've already stated why you have to go Pie over Hoffpauir. Though at this point I'd keep them both and not have Fuk. Since Pie is Fuk with a better bat (Pie's average has gone up with his playing time), defensive range, speed, and arm strength. But if we make it to the World Series. He needs to be the DH.

so what's everyone looking at this weekend? i, personally, don't want to see the phils in the playoffs. only team that remotely worries me. so i'm thinking we tank to the crew, the mets take the east and hopefully the crew gets the wildcard over philly. which would give us a first round matchup against the dodgers and a potential second-round matchup against the mets/crew. and how awesome would a mets/crew nlds be? basically which team wants to lose less. so now all that needs to happen is the nats need to pound the phils this weekend. it can happen, right?

But he wouldn't play. 1B is taken, LF is taken, and like it or not in a big game situation. Piniella will go with Ward over Hoffpauir. Now there's a chance you might need more then one pinch hitter, but is that worth keeping him on the roster for? When you have your Fotenot's, ect.

Though if we make the World Series, he should be the DH over Ward. I don't think Piniella would do that either.

Why would you want him to retire? You saw how good Fukudome could be. He's had to deal with a lot this year. He's hit the rookie wall just like Theriot last year.

Not to mention in Japan they don't play all these games, they don't have to travel far, and the culture shock aspect. As hot as he was, we all knew this was coming. As bad as he's been he's only hitting .258 with 56 RBI and a pretty damn good .359 OBP.

The guy gets on base. He has a higher batting average then Edmonds, who's only hitting .232 on the season and .241 since the All-Star break. Yet no complaints about him.

I'm willing to bet Fukudome comes back next year and looks just like the guy we saw for the first couple of months.

And it's offical, the playoff rotation is set.

NLDS Rotation
Game 1: Ryan Dempster (@ Wrigley)
Game 2: Carlos Zambrano (@ Wrigley)
Game 3: Rich Harden (@ TBD)
Game 4: Ted Lilly (@ TBD)
Game 5: Ryan Dempter (@ Wrigley)

Surprised we're going 4 man in the 1st round, but as long as Lilly keeps pitching like he has been. I don't see it as too big of a problem. Honestly though with those first three guys, we could sweep anyone.

Also since we're not pitching Dempster on short rest for Game 4. This means at worst if we use Dempster for Game 5. Zambrano and Harden can pitch the first two games of the NLCS.

'Not good': DeRosa, Cedeno out with injuries

NEW YORK -- Just when the Cubs were supposed to be resting and rehabbing in preparation for next week's playoff series, their health has taken two big steps back.

Versatile second baseman Mark DeRosa, who has been the key in covering right field for slumping Kosuke Fukudome the last two months, might not play the last few games of the regular season because of a calf strain that developed Wednesday in New York.

While his injury is not considered serious, the Cubs are treating it with a lot of caution considering how important DeRosa -- who has a career-high 21 home runs and 87 RBI -- is to the lineup.

And backup middle infielder Ronny Cedeno was scratched from Thursday's lineup because of a shoulder strain he suffered with an ill-advised dive into first base trying to beat out a grounder. He's expected to miss at least tonight's series opener in Milwaukee.

''Here we go where we've been pretty healthy for the last month or so,'' manager Lou Piniella said, ''and in one day we lose two middle infielders. That's not good.''
I didn't realize Cedeno got hurt. Hopefully everyone is healthy by October 1st.

Ya, I don't know if I like that. Defense can be big in the playoffs. I guess a lot would depend on his offense the next couple days. I mean unless he's going 3 for 5 or better. It's not worth having a crap right fielder.

If DeRosa is healthy though, I wonder if he plays right field or the middle infield though.

Piniella also said he decided to carry 14 position players and 11 pitchers in the division series, but said the only spot still up for grabs was a final one in the bullpen. He declined to say who might be left off, but said Bob Howry (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3875), who has a 6.35 ERA in eight games in September, would be part of the postseason roster.

"When we're playing good, we're good," Piniella said. "We're going to pitch well and we've got to play good defensive ball then we've got to get some timely hitting. Obviously, I've got a lot of confidence in this team."

Ok well we know who the 4 starter are, and Marquis and Marshall are in the pen that's also been made offical. That's 6 spots. Wood, Marmol, and Howry make 9. I'm guessing Samardzija and Gaudin are the other two? Did I miss anyone big there?

MILWAUKEE -- Cubs catcher Geovany Soto was pulled from Friday's game after he took an awkward swing and appeared to re-aggravate a sore left hand injured one week ago.

X-rays taken on Sept. 19 revealed joint irritation in Soto's hand, and the rookie has called the injury a "minor thing." He originally felt some soreness on Sept. 18 in an at-bat before he hit, and has started in two games since then.

On Friday against Milwaukee, Soto swung at a 1-0 pitch from Brewers reliever Seth McClung leading off the sixth and winced. Cubs manager Lou Piniella and assistant trainer Ed Halbur went to the batter's box to check out Soto and pulled the rookie backstop.
The catcher has 23 homers and 86 RBIs, and is two home runs shy of tying the franchise rookie record for most home runs, set by Billy Williams in 1961.
Man, this is bad news. If he's aggrivating it, I'm not sure he'll be healthy for the post season.

Soto's injury was the last game against the Brewers with the crazy come back. He hit the game tieing homer in the 9th with the hurt hand. Though I guess you could blame him re-injuring a minor injury on SI.

Edit: But I do think Zambrano needs Soto. When he's catching him, he seems to know how to calm Zambrano down.

And I've decided that if Bob Howry blows any games for the Cubs in the post season I'm actually going to murder him.

Do we still have to play the Astros the last day of the season?
No, they got eliminated from the Wild Card. So the game is now meaningless. Phillies only need 1 win, or a Mets loss to clinch the East. It's basically just who between the Mets and Brewers suck more for the Wild Card.

So it's pretty much the Mets or Dodgers for us in the NLDS.

TapNorris

This is what I want to see.....We beat the brewers today, Mets win, Phils lose. Tomorrow, brewers squeak one out against us, Mets win, Phils lose. If my calculations are correct that would give the brewers, Mets and Phils the same record at the end of regular season play. So then the Mets and Phils have a playoff for the East title, then the next day the loser of that game plays the brewers for the wildcard. Let those teams beat up on each other before the real playoffs even begin!!

Let's Go Cubs! Let's Go Cubs! Let's Go Cubs!!

This would be ideal. Though I'll say this right now, we need a healthy Soto very very badly. Not because of his bat, but because of his defense, arm, and he calls an excellent game.

I agree...he's well beyond his years as a catcher. Hank White had better be behind the plate for the next two and Geo should be in the training room getting treatment 5 times a day for the next four days.

Because the games don't mean anything. This is No-Fingers last chance to get some playing time in the bigs. For his development, it's optimal. You don't want Blanco's back acting up again, we could use his experience in the playoffs.

Disagree completely. We should play all of our starters tomorrow. We need to play a competitive team's best pitcher to just sharpen everyone up. We don't want the hitters to have any rust on them when the playoffs start.

It'd be REAL nice to see Zambrano get his control back tomorrow.

Also, Marquis sucks out of the pen. Even though I've defended the guy because he has been a really solid #5 starter in the second half of the season, I don't know if he can help us in the playoffs. He looked bad today.

I agree, I thought the time to rest everyone was the entire Mets series. Then play everyone against a Brewers team fighting for the playoffs as a tuneup. Especially the last two games. As we'll have a few days off until the playoffs start.

Also, Marquis sucks out of the pen. Even though I've defended the guy because he has been a really solid #5 starter in the second half of the season, I don't know if he can help us in the playoffs. He looked bad today.
You know I hate Marquis as a starter, but why he sucks in the bullpen I think has an answer. He absolutely hates being in the bullpen. Remember how mad Lou got when Marquis had a hissy fit in spring training. "Start me or trade me." he said were his only options.

It's Guzman going on the bump tomorrow now. I guess Z or Lou, have a different idea for how Zambrano should get ready for the playoffs. Hope he doesn't think too much about his last start and tries to overdue it the next time he's on the mound.

Good point. However, Z looked great in his first two innings against the Mets, and then his control went off. And, if Dempster doesn't get the W against Santana or Kuroda/Lowe/whoever is pitching for LA in game 1, then I will be worried about Big Z in a huge game 2. I almost think it'd be better to have Harden start game 2 as a safety valve. Sure he walks guys, too, but he is more dominant than Big Z.

The offense for LA has been rolling so far, although I'm nervous the returns of Kent and Furcal (assuming they make the lineup) will bring that down. But if they don't, it makes us all the more dangerous.

Lowe/Billingsley is the way to go at Wrigley. No one's been more reliable than big Chad this season, and Lowe's postseason experience will be huge for our staff. The battle of the bullpens will end up being the biggest factor in this series. Statswise indicating, it would be a damn shame if they couldn't hold down the Cubs in the late innings.

:thumbsup My vote is for the throwback. It's poetic, and reflects the past years and years and years and years....

100% Most definitely. I tried to resize this one, but it turned out all pixelated... :shrug

I'm gonna go with the second suggestion for now, if that's cool with you guys.

I'm gonna take all of your ideas and make a poll later.
I'll leave it open until the night before the playoffs, and make it public, so that we can discount any non-Cub fans who might vote in it.

Cool?

Fuku Factor

Despite his second-half slump, Kosuke Fukudome could wind up with a lot of at-bats against the Los Angeles Dodgers. If DeRosa's calf keeps him from being used effectively in right field, Fukudome would get most, if not all, the starts there, Piniella suggested.

Considering all of the Dodgers' playoff starters are right-handed, Fukudome might get most of those starts anyway, with DeRosa playing second base -- depending on whether Piniella prefers Fukudome or lefty-hitting Mike Fontenot in the lineup.
You know Fuk being right isn't a bad thing as long as the pitchers hold up there end. We all know pitching and defense wins in the post season.

Roster talk

The Cubs don't plan to make the final decision on their playoff roster until after Piniella, general manager Jim Hendry and assistant GM Randy Bush meet Tuesday morning.

The issue appears to be whether to keep the better hitter in Micah Hoffpauir or the better fielder in Felix Pie for an outfield spot. DeRosa's prognosis could have a bearing on that.

''I didn't see anything today that changes anything,'' Piniella said.
I really do think we need Pie. He was hitting much better when he came up. As I've said before his bat isn't why we need him. If we have a lead in the 8th inning. Johnson, Pie, and Fukudome needs to be the outfield.

Not to mention since Ward will be the main pinch hitter, Hoffpauir's impact will be limited. Though we all know he's got a pretty good bat. I just hope he can stay hot if he does make the post season roster.

I'm going to tell everyone right now, Soto and Gaudin are my keys to the post season. Both need to be healthy, and their normal selves. Especially when Zambrano pitches. Soto seems to be able to keep him under control

Gaudin when he's healthy, can be a very dominante middle reliever. I think we all know Howry hasn't regained his form. I don't want him pitching important innings. Maybe if we have a big lead, save the pen. You throw in Howry. But Gaudin and Shark need to be the brige to Marmol and Wood. With some Marshall mixed in.

Regular season doesn't mean much. We'll both be face each others best starters. But ya this is the NLCS I expect, should be a good one. Good luck. You won't sweep them because of Sabathia, but the Brewers shouldn't be a huge problem.

So that's your 10 spots we know about. Cotts, Gaudin, and Guzman are the only three I can think about with a shot. Cotts has been up and down. Gaudin didn't give up a run in the Sunday finale at Milwaukee. If he had his command back, I'm sure he'd get the edge. I didn't see him pitch though.

4.29 ERA and a 0-2 record, what's not to like?

Now Gaudin's stats aren't awesome either, but that's because he hasn't been the same since the injury. If he's healthy, and has his command. I think you give him the nod over Cotts. He was Lou's go to middle reliever for a while. If not, it will be Howry.

Not to mention, we all know Marshall is the go to left hander. I mean I won't be upset if they pick Cotts over Gaudin, but I would be surprised. Honestly I'd rather have Cotts and Gaudin over Howry.

i'm sure he will be. lou seems to like him for some reason. he's blown it so many times, but lou keeps sending him out there. he could be a good pitcher, he just hasn't been lately. and this isn't the right time of year to hope someone comes around.

Are we sure that there will only be 10 pitchers? I mean, I can only think of 14 position players that should really be on the team....I really don't see any reason for Pie to be on the team. Sure his defense is good, but so is Reed Johnson's and so is Jim Edmonds'.

Marquis really has no place pitching in the postseason unless he's on cleanup duty if someone gets roughed up.

So I haven't kept tabs on the Dodgers and want to do some scouting.

I know they've got Manny and Ethier. Ethier has been impressive (leads the team in BA & HR, and has a .885 OPS). And Manny is killing since he was traded with a BA of fucking .396 and 17 HR

They've also got Matt Kemp, Nomar, and Juan Pierre. Kemp has 35 SB and Pierre has 40, so they've got some speed.

Their team ERA (3.68) and team OPS (.691) are both 1st in the NL

So they're definitely more than just Manny.

God I can't focus on classes right now! Just too excited for Wednesday.

GO Cubs!
