Fuk making it?

Obviously. He's been on the team all year. They're paying him $48mil. He draws walks.

Putting Pie on the team is weak. The pinch-running is fine, but what if Pie is put in the game one inning, and has to come up and hit later. Then we're fucked, becuase he sucks at the plate. Hoffpauir is at least a real threat from the plate and can supply some real power.

Howry is absolutely god awful. I don't know how he can possibly make the team. The only time he would ever be put into a game is if we were way behind.

You guys really think we should trade Hoffpauir? Is that a joke? In a year or two, he could be a better hitter than D Lee. It would be the natural replacement when D Lee gets too old or gets even worse than he is now.

There is something to be said for defense, but Pie looks like he is on track to be a career .230 hitter. That kind of awful hitting outweighs the defense.

seeing as how wednesday's game is at 5:30, i will probably watching it at home. hopefully i can get out of work by then. but my boss is a cubs' fan, so he should be leaving too. i definitely would like to get together for at least one of the games. and seeing as how we all live in the vicinity (most of us, anyways), we should try to organize something.

I really don't see any reason for Pie to be on the team. Sure his defense is good, but so is Reed Johnson's and so is Jim Edmonds'.
Johnson is nice, and ya he'll dive for the ball. Has a chance to make a highlight reel. Edmonds is better, and makes great reads off the ball. But in way shape or form are they compareable with defense. Pie plays center field far and away better then either. His range is just insane. His arm is second to none on this team. Tied with Soriano perhaps, but Pie's arm is more accurate.

Defensively: Pie>Edmonds>>>Johnson
i agree adam.. hoffpauir is atrociouds in te field.... maybe we can get lucky and trade him for something useful in the off season
This is EXACTLY what needs to happen. Remember when Wellemeyer (now on the Cards), and Mitre (now on the Marlins). Had big starts to their MLB career in 2003? Everyone and their mama wanted them.

There were talks about trading those two for Carl Crawford. But we held onto them and got nothing for them.

This last September Sam Fuld had his stock SKYROCKET. We called him an untouchable, and now his value is back to nothing. We didn't do a good enough job of knowing he'd be crap. We could have traded him for something.
Putting Pie on the team is weak. The pinch-running is fine, but what if Pie is put in the game one inning, and has to come up and hit later. Then we're fucked, becuase he sucks at the plate. This is beyond false. Pie is a 5 tool player. What has he shown recently, that makes you believe he can't hit his potential?

You guys really think we should trade Hoffpauir? Is that a joke? In a year or two, he could be a better hitter than D Lee. It would be the natural replacement when D Lee gets too old or gets even worse than he is now.
Hoffpauir is horrible at 1B. Lets say we keep Ramirez. We need a gold glove 1B over there at 1B. Hoffpauir will never be that. He's best suited to be a DH. I'd rather trade him for something that will help us win over the next couple years.

If Ramirez keeps it up defensively. I'd rather replace Lee with Josh Vitters. 3rd overall pick in 2007. He's considered to be a franchise bat. He's got the talent to be a good 3B, but no one is sure. Why not stick him at 1B?

There is something to be said for defense, but Pie looks like he is on track to be a career .230 hitter. That kind of awful hitting outweighs the defense.
Again, given what? He's yet to play for a long stretch in the MLB. I know someone in this thread earlier in the year said. If we trade, get rid of Pie. Without ever letting him play 3 straight months in the majors. Something is wrong.

But this year, he hit .241 on the year. Keep in mind he only hit .215 last year. He was used in a similar fashion this year as he was last year. Before we picked up Edmonds and demoted Pie. He was hitting .285 in his last 15 games. After a horrible April he got his season average up to .222, which is where it was at till he got called up this September. Got it up to .241.

Looking at Pie month by month:
April - .200 AVG, .283 OBP, .275 SLG, .558 OPS
May - .263 AVG, .300 OBP, .316 SLG, .616 OPS
Sept - .300 AVG, .381 OBP, .474 SLG, .855 OPS

Also in close, late situations Pie is hitting .313 in 16 AB's.

Now do I think Pie could go 5 for 5 like Hoff did the other night? Not right now, but Hoff won't be starting in the playoffs. But I do know the more he's played, the better Pie's gotten. Piniella's work on shortening his swing has seemed to work.

He was sucking at AAA for a while working on it. Then he turned things around down there and wound up hitting .287 in Iowa, .319 after the All-Star break.

As I've said before. D-Lee hit .259, .233, and .206 his first three seasons. Ramirez hit .235, .179, and .256 his first three seasons. Soriano? .125, .180, and .268. Edmonds? .246, .273, and .290. Hell Theriot in his first rull season only hit .266 last year.

Developing hitters takes time. With how good Pie has done in the minors, and what kind of talent he has. I don't see why any Cubs fan would write him off. I'm hoping he wins the center field job in 09'. Until then I think he can be a huge asset to this team.

Just look at the regular season. When it counted, if Pie was on the roster. He was used as a defensive replacement, and pinch runner. When was Hoff ever used? As injury replacement, and when rosters expanded. Which tells me Pie will be of more use in the post season.

Wood first since '45 to play on four Cubs playoff teams

The Cubs haven't buried the curses yet or even gotten to that first World Series since 1945, but Kerry Wood has accomplished a 63-year first for the franchise just by helping this team get to the postseason.

He's the first to play on four Cubs postseason teams since third baseman Stan Hack, who was on the 1932, '35, '38 and '45 pennant winners. In fact, since the Tinkers-to-Evers-to-Chance and Three Finger Brown crew 100 years ago, only three Cubs had accomplished that before Wood: pitcher Charley Root and catcher Gabby Hartnett (teammates in '29, '32, '35 and '38) and Hack.

''I was just talking to Daryle Ward about that,'' Wood said Sunday in Milwaukee. ''This is the fourth time, so 40 percent of my career, I've been able to say I pitched in the postseason. So that's pretty cool.''

Wood's playoff career suggests the expectations, if not the fortunes, of the franchise have changed over the last decade.

''I've played on a lot of teams here early in my career where we were expected to finish last every year,'' said Wood, who joins Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Zambrano as the only three Cubs remaining from the 2003 NLCS team. ''So it's a nice turnaround.''
It's because Wood is awesome. Even last year, he was the extra reliever we needed. With Howry being the suck even last year. It gave us someone besides Marmol who could get outs.

We all know he's the only reason we made it in 98', and he was a very big part of the 03' team. This year he was our All-Star closer. Had Marmol won the job, where would we have been while Marmol struggled? Thank god there were only 5 save opportunities, while he was injured.

I know everyone doesn't like him, but he's only blown 6 saves this year. Most of them were in April and May.

Wrigley throws a curve in Cubs sale

Price tag for renovations likely to affect negotiations

Wrigley Field (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/wrigley-field-PLTRA0000169.topic) casts a long shadow as prospective buyers review the Cubs' confidential financial records and prepare the next round of bids for the stadium and team.

At issue is not whether the Cubs will remain at the beloved, 94-year-old ballpark, but how much it will cost to preserve and enhance Wrigley. The price that the franchise and stadium fetch will depend largely on how much more revenue can be wrung out of Wrigley.

"The franchise value is a guess on what future profits will be," said Phillip Miller, an associate professor of economics at Minnesota State University-Mankato, who has studied baseball economics. "If you have to gut the place in the extreme case, that would affect the value."

Bidders aren't publicly discussing their plans for the stadium because the sales process is ongoing. But their concerns go beyond maintaining the stadium in a safe condition. Fans and players have expressed the desire for more modern amenities, such as a larger clubhouse and more space for concessions and bathrooms, without losing the vibe and charm of the old ballpark. If a new owner has to privately finance such improvements, fans could see higher ticket and food prices, and even the stadium's sacrosanct name replaced with a corporate sponsor.

The costs of such extensive renovations could run into the hundreds of millions of dollars, an amount that could be a factor in negotiations if a new owner has to spend more than $1 billion, as some experts have estimated, to buy the package of the team, Wrigley Field and related broadcast properties.

But sources close to the bidders acknowledge that without a major ballpark restoration, new sources of revenue for the team are limited. In recent years, Tribune Co. (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/economy-business-finance/media/tribune-co.-ORCRP017346.topic) has taken steps to generate more revenue by adding 1,800 bleacher seats, installing a lounge in the bleachers and putting advertising on the outfield doors.

"You can maintain Wrigley Field as is for a period of time," said one source close to a bidder who did not want to be identified. "But the big question isn't maintaining it. Whoever buys the team will have to make a gut check on what do you want the stadium to look like. The fact is there are revenue streams you can add to the stadium, but you got to build them first before you can charge for them."

Cubs Chairman Crane Kenney said any improvements to Wrigley Field and their price tag "depends on how ambitious you are, how much you want to accomplish." Otherwise, he added, "if you just maintain the place, you can play in Wrigley Field certainly though my lifetime, and I'm 46."

Tribune Co. Chairman Sam Zell (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/economy-business-finance/sam-zell-PEBSL000194.topic) tried to remove some of the uncertainty about Wrigley Field by entertaining discussions with city and state officials about selling the ballpark to a state agency that owns the White Sox (http://www.chicagotribune.com/topic/sports/baseball/chicago-white-sox-ORSPT000167.topic)'s home. In the proposed deal, the Illinois Sports Finance Authority would have financed extensive renovations that would have included adding concessions and washrooms, building luxury suites and a club lounge. The estimated price tag: $300 million to $400 million.

Zell told prospective buyers that such a deal made good sense because it would have unloaded the burden of fixing Wrigley Field on the state. The deal also made sense for Zell. By selling the stadium separately, he hoped to get top dollar for the assets. Wringing the highest possible price is crucial for Tribune Co., which is weighed down by about $12 billion in debt, largely from Zell's December deal to take the company private.

While the talks between Tribune Co., which owns the Chicago Tribune, and the state broke down in June, the idea of public stewardship of a landmark such as Wrigley Field is not out of the question. People familiar with past discussions don't discount the possibility of a new team owner reopening negotiations with the state over how to finance a Wrigley face-lift. The state has an incentive to participate because Wrigley is one of Illinois' biggest tourist attractions and the hub of a thriving North Side neighborhood.

Even with an antiquated facility, the Cubs are one of the most valuable franchises in Major League Baseball. Wrigley Field is a big reason for that. Even when the team is performing poorly, people pay for the ambience of watching a game in one of baseball's oldest parks, with its ivy-covered walls and vintage scoreboard.

Tribune Co. does not publicly disclose the revenue and expenses generated by the ballpark. But the Chicago Tribune obtained a private appraisal of the stadium done in 2006, before recent improvements, that gives a peek inside the Wrigley cash cow. The Cubs also generate revenue outside of Wrigley, such as television contracts. A Tribune Co. spokesman declined to comment on the numbers.

In 2005, gross revenue from the sale of tickets reached $90.5 million, up from $62.4 million in 2003, an increase of 45 percent. In 2005, the Cubs sold 3.1 million tickets. Since then the team has increased seating capacity to about 42,000 from 39,538. Attendance broke 3.3 million this season.

The average concession revenue per capita has nearly doubled between 1995 and 2005, from $7.56 to $14.56.

Luxury suites are another source of revenue. Rental rates range from $110,000 to $167,000 a year for the 12-seat suites and $145,000 to $182,000 a year for the 15-seat suites. Wrigley has 67 original suites, according to the documents.

There's no hiding the fact the park requires extensive upkeep. In 2005, the Cubs spent $4.9 million in major structural improvements and nearly $2 million more on operating expenses for regular maintenance and repairs at Wrigley. The $6.9 million outlay was more than double the $3.1 million the team spent on renovations and routine maintenance in 2003.

Maintenance expenses increased in 2005 after chunks of concrete fell from upper-deck panels on three occasions during the 2004 season. Based on recommendations of engineers, protective netting was installed to ensure the safety of the fans.

The engineering report found that "the upper-deck precast members should not require replacement in the near term (certainly not in the next 10 years)."

Three years after that report, Kenney said the stadium poses no safety risk. To maintain the structural soundness of the ballpark will not require a "very big capital outlay over the next 10 to 15 years," he said, declining to disclose exact numbers.

Bidders, though, have hired their own engineers to inspect Wrigley Field and draw their own conclusions.

In presentations to prospective buyers, Cubs management has offered ideas to increase revenue from the existing real estate footprint. One possible new source of revenue that has been on the drawing board for a few years is a triangular-shaped building to be constructed on the player parking lot. The building would include parking, restaurants, player facilities and team offices.

"I see everything remaining to be done here as an opportunity," Kenney said.

Just how big is this building over the player parking lot suppose to be? I'd imagine it have to be very high to include parking, restaurants, player facilities, and team offices. That requires a lot of space.

Some huge building next to Wrigley, would just look odd.

I was in Chicago for my brothers wedding and went to the last home game of the year - regular season - and it was absolutely mad! Its been about a dozen years since I've lived there and been to Wrigely and I forgot how awesome it is to go to a game and get an Old Style and a Hebrew National. Nothing better than a sunny Sunday at Wrigley with a hot dog and a beer.

On a side note we took some family to the Sox game on Sunday. There was a possibility it would have been the last game of the season for them with no playoffs. It was a huge game with the playoffs on the line and they couldn't even fill the stadium. Pathetic South Siders.

There is no doubt that right now we are best with D-Ro in right (with going to second late in the game with Fuk going to right) and Sneaky power at second...

THoughts.. Go Twins!!!

my guess is that fuk is starting because the dodgers have a right-handed dominated pitching staff.

Watching Fukudome on saturday gave me hope. I feel he MIGHT MIGHT add something. Dodgers have not seen him for a few months now..

And D-Ro.... is he really hurt that bad? I hope he is ok... he really is our MVP. He didn't play at all on Sunday.....I'm worried about Geo as well.:(

That's the way to do it. Keep him in the infield and limit his running (as opposed to RF). Let's see what FUK can do. He picked it up a little towards the end.

I'm raising my hand, because as I've posted before, I had a dream before the season started that Jim Edmonds was playing centerfield for us. He was making diving catches and hitting home runs....just like he has been doing for us since May.

Exactly, work some good counts. Get a 10-pitch at-bat here and there and he'll be fine. The thing is if he can do that, that's when he was hitting better. When he's been slumping, his at-bats have been much quicker.

Cuz if we don't beat the Dodgers, it'll just be like, "What the hell did we do all that for?"
Ya know? I know the Dodgers are playing well recently, but in my mind there's just no good reason we should lose the series to them. Really no reason they should win any more than 1 game.

We are just flat out better than them in almost every facet of the game.

Seen it. Great, great stuff.

Chilling.

I haven't been able to stop singing it in my head and around the office for the last couple weeks.

And here's to the men and the legends we've known.

Teaching us faith and giving us hope.

United we stand and united we'll fall,
Down to our knees the day we win it all.

Yeah, Ernie Banks said, "Oh let's play two."

Or did he mean 200 years?

In the same ballpark, our diamond, our jewel.

The home of our joy and our tears.

Keeping traditions and wishes made new.

The place where our grandfathers' fathers they grew.

A spiritual feeling if I ever knew.

And if you ain't been I am sorry for you.

And when the day comes, when that last winning run,

And I'm crying and covered in beer.

I'll look to the sky and know I was right.

To think someday we'll go all the way,

Yeah! Someday we'll go all the way.

:D Let's Go Cubs!

god i hope so. everyone in the media has been on his ass. "which zambrano shows up?" "he hasn't pitched well lately." i hope he shuts em down.

This was on Bleed Cubbie Blue today:

This year has felt like an awakening. We have seen our team win an historic number of games at Wrigley Field, total the most wins since World War II ended, seen a Cub no-hitter for the first time in decades, seen performances beyond any that most of us alive today have ever witnessed. It feels wonderful.

It will not be completely fulfilled until a World Series is won. I don't think it boasting to say that the 2008 Cubs should be at the very least, favored to get there, if not win everything. Do I know how I'll feel when it happens? Not for certain.

But damn, I want to find out. We've had enough of losing, enough of reciting and hearing about the miserable history of our team, the team we live and die with every day, and yes, I'm not afraid to tell you that seeing a Cubs World Series victory will indeed fill a hole in my life. Yours too, I bet. Go Cubs.

I know EXACTLY how I'll feel if the Cubs win it all: I will fall to my knees and weep like a little girl, and I'm not ashamed to admit it! I, a grown man, will sob like a girl!

LET'S GO CUBBIES!!!

Anyone see the horrible Sports Center segment. Life of Reilly: Cubs Buzzkill? It's been playing over and over on Sports Center all morning. It's also on ESPN.com

He list 10 ways how the curse will continue. It's very retarded and a horrible joke. Harry Caray statue falls on D-Lee's foot. Bartman is forgiven. Zambrano takes the day off, sings the 7th inning stretch, and falls out the window. Those were three of the amazing reasons the curse will continue. Whoever wrote that should be fired. Who approved that to be put on TV?

They have had great pitching, hitting, fielding, and coaching all year long, but now is when it matters the most. Down onto our knees the day we win it all"

Easily my favorite line in that song. I've been rocking a short Cubs-flavored playlist all day. All The Way, Go Cubs Go, Don't Stop Believing, Areosmith's Dream On, Living On A Prayer, Born To Run, Baba O'Riley, and the Top Gun anthem :D

So nervous/excited. Just read that prediction article on ESPN.com and holy fuck. I can't wait for the game tonight. And yeah that Reilly piece was shit, not funny at all. Kerry Wood's arm falls off?? Soriano makes a mistake and throws a double into the stands?? Give me a break...

Anyone have any friendly/not so friendly wagers they are doing with friends who are Cards/White Sox/Dodgers fans??

My roommate is a Cards fan. We have 2 bets going right now: the first is that if the Cubs get to the World Series, he buys me a case of whatever beer I want, and if they don't make it I buy him lunch.

The second is a more daring and frightening bet. Tonight, at the time of the first pitch, we are opening a Keystone Light. It shall sit on the TV throughout the playoffs, and if the cubs get knocked out, then I have to drink it, and if we win the WS, he's gotta beer bong it :lol

I should get something going b/w my good friend who is a White Sox fan...
