Baseball is the most painful of all sports. It's basically 6 months of pain. I am an Indians fan, and I feel a little relieved we didn't make the playoffs, because of how nervous I was last year.

So you're telling me 2 runs on 9 hits is just fine? We wouldn't have won with good pitching.

The hitters need to get their act together. It made me sick to see how many mistakes the Dodgers pitchers got away with today.

This is the same thing I've been saying all year. The team gets plenty of hits, but they need to string some together and come up with the 2-out, clutch hit. Otherwise, it's going to be 2007 all over again. Tomorrow is a must win.

And take fucking Fuk out and put DeRosa in right and Fontenot at 2nd.

True but we are only 500 in the last ten games of the season, and it seems that the lax attitude of division clinchers has run over into the playoffs. I can only hope that Lou is as pissed as we all are and rips a new asshole into Soriano and the rest of the crappy swing at anything hitters of the night. And why the fuck wasnt marmol or wood put in. Extra runs added on by people who SUCK at relief.

And also. With Lowe out of the way, our bats should do better against Billingsley and Kuroda. We always struggle against sinker ball pitchers, and Lowe is one of the best at that. And With Z and Harden going, what's there to worry about? We just gotta come out and be patient at the plate and not help the other team out. Today, we swung at pitches that we normally don't swing at. We'll come back tomorrow and play much better.

Why the Chicago Cubs will win the World Series

Our friends from Chicago are already pleading with us not to write this column.

Sorry.

Our friends from Chicago think that if we pick the Cubs to win the World Series -- heck, if anybody picks the Cubs, whether it's an ESPN employee or the guy who changes their oil at the Express Lube -- it guarantees, absolutely for sure, that it can't possibly happen.

Sorry.

We're doing it anyway. We're predicting the Cubs will win the 2008 World Series.

This prediction comes with no warranty whatsoever, of course. If it causes you to invest heavily in Cubs futures at the Las Vegas Commodities Market, they won't be refunding your investment capital if you're wrong, even if you drop our name on them.

Matter of fact, they might even mention to you that we predicted last October that the Cubs would win the World Series, too. Thus inspired, they then went out and forgot to win one stinking postseason game.

But it seemed like a good idea then. It seems like even a better idea now.

We remind you that it was at exactly this point four years ago that we picked the Red Sox to win their first World Series since -- what was that year, 1782? We feel the same way about the Cubs this October that we felt about the Red Sox that October. It's all set up perfectly for them. And we're not alone in thinking that -- for a change.

Over the past week, we polled officials of 19 clubs to see which team they thought would win the World Series. The Cubs won the poll. Going away.

And even some of the folks who didn't vote for the Cubs felt compelled to put in a good word for them. Just to prove we're not crazy, we now present a couple of those testimonials:

"Assuming good health from [Carlos] Zambrano and [Rich] Harden, the Cubs will give any AL team a battle," said one AL GM.

"I think the Cubs, with a healthy Zambrano and Harden, have a shot," said an AL assistant GM. "To me, the biggest challenge for NL teams has been the lack of starting pitching that can handle AL lineups. Those guys can do that."

So there. See? We're obviously not completely insane. No more than usual, anyway.

This is a team with no real holes. It's a team four-deep in starting pitchers with the talent to two-hit you in a big game. It's a team with that scary Carlos Marmol (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28486)-Kerry Wood (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3821) bullpen tag team waiting for you at the end of the game. And it's a team for which every starting position player has at least a .350 on-base percentage except (naturally) the leadoff man, Alfonso Soriano (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3993) -- who leads the team in homers.

We also want to remind you that there is no federal law prohibiting the Cubs from winning the World Series, even if millions of Americans suspect otherwise.

We know that because we checked out a few federal laws just the other day. We also know that because history tells us the Cubs have won the World Series.

Granted, that happened slightly before the invention of ESPN, Elvis and tanning salons, not to mention Jamie Moyer (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=1799). But at least 1908 was well after the demise of dinosaurs, so it's not that long ago.

And now it's their time again. A mere century later. Timing is everything in life. And there's just something about years ending in "08" that works for this team.

"I just think it's their time," said an NL GM. "It's their turn. They're reaching a crescendo. They've got momentum. They've got above-average pitching. They've got a solid bullpen. They've got relatively good health. They've got a good lineup, very diversified -- speed, power, guys who hit for average. They've got a lot of things building for them at the right time of year.

"But most of all," he said, "it's their turn. I really think that. This is their time."

We regret to inform him that there are seven other teams in the field that think the same thing. All but one of them is going to turn out to be wrong. But after kicking this around with lots of people we respect, here's how we see this postseason unfolding:

National League Division Series

Cubs over Dodgers
Amazingly, you could make a case that the Cubs' Octobers have gone way better than the Dodgers' Octobers -- at least lately. Since 1989, the Cubs have won seven times as many postseason games as the Dodgers (7-1). And we see that trend holding up this year, too.

The biggest reason to pick the Dodgers would be their improved, Manny-fied offense, right? Well, what does it tell you that the Cubs outscored the Dodgers over the past two months (275-250) even with Manny Ramirez (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=2974), and outscored L.A. by 155 runs over the course of the season? One NL executive's description of Manny's supporting offensive cast: "Thin."

We agree. The Cubs' pitching is rested and recharged. The Dodgers need too much to go right. Cubs in four.

National League Championship Series

Cubs over Phillies
One of these Octobers, the baseball gods were bound to bring these two franchises together, with a World Series on the line. The Cubs may have gone a century without a title. But the Phillies (one championship in 125 years) haven't exactly been the Yankees reincarnate, either, you know.

The Phillies did go 4-2 against the Cubs this year and easily could have gone 6-0. But that whiff-prone Phillies offense isn't a good match for a Cubs staff that led the big leagues in strikeouts. Check out the numbers of the Phillies' four biggest bats against pitchers with ERAs under 3.50:

Ryan Howard (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6097) .176 average/.619 OPS
Chase Utley (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=5383) .202 average/.604 OPS
Pat Burrell (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4214) .211 average/.705 OPS
Jimmy Rollins (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=4258) .239 average/.671 OPS

World Series staffs are traditionally built around strikeout pitchers -- and the Cubs' pitchers out-K'd the Phillies' staff by nearly 200 (1,264-1,081).

"I like the power arms [the Cubs] bring to the postseason, where you have off days and what seems like time to rest," said one AL exec. And so do we. Cubs in six.

World Series

Cubs over Red Sox
First of all, just try to grasp the magnitude of this matchup if it happens.

"I could guarantee you right now," said Boston's Sean Casey (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=3769), "that we'd set a record for [TV] ratings. It'll be nuts, man. Just nuts."

Think about all the players who have connected the dots between these two storied franchises -- Bill Buckner, Dennis Eckersley, Andre Dawson, even Calvin Schiraldi.

Think about the ballparks -- Wrigley and Fenway. More history inside those walls than the Smithsonian.

It almost seems meant to be. But when you stack up the two baseball teams, we'll take the Cubs.

Similar lineups. Deep rotations. Great leatherworkers. But Octobers often come down to bullpen dominance, and we'll go with that Cubs' bullpen in this duel. Marmol and Wood combined for 198 strikeouts in 153 2/3 innings -- making them the only bullpen duo in baseball that averaged over 11 K's per nine innings apiece. Jonathan Papelbon (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=6373)-Justin Masterson (http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/players/profile?playerId=28977) isn't bad. But it isn't that dominating.

And that sums up why we're picking the Cubs. No matter where you look, you can't find a serious hole. So the people we surveyed say they have just one real worry:

The pressure.

"They will be playing with more pressure than anyone in the playoffs," said one AL GM.

"If and when they do reach the World Series," said an NL GM, "the franchise history will either energize them or wear them down, with all the talk about 100 years."

But what's the big deal about one measly, parade-free century? The waiting only makes it better when you win. You could ask, well, the Red Sox.

"That [Cubs] fandom is out of control right now," said one NL GM. "They've been waiting so long. The excitement around that team now is like nothing I've ever seen. It's getting like that Boston-ish atmosphere in 2004."

That energy could U-turn against them, of course, if things spin the wrong way in one of these series. But if we're spending even 30 seconds thinking about that, we've got it all wrong, says the same GM. This time around, he thinks, Cubs history is going to provide the fuel, not the demons.

"To me, you'd rather have that electricity, and take the chance you can live up to it, than to not have it and try to find it," he said. "Some teams have to hope for it. The Cubs aren't one of them. It's there."

Yep. It's there, all right. It's all there. So here's our advice to all our friends in Chicago who are threatening never to talk to us again:

Don't blame us now -- because in four weeks you'll be thanking us. Just as soon as you finish wiping the confetti -- and the tears -- out of your eyes.

I know right, where's Hoffpauir at? Fukudome shouldn't have ever made this roster. I saw Pie did, that's good for a late inning defensive replacement, but Fukudome? DeRo should be out there instead.
Ok but with the wind blowing in. Piniella thought this game would be low scoring. He wanted his best defense out there. DeRosa was hurt, and him running around the outfield just isn't a good option right now.

DeRosa while a gamer, and willing to lay out for a ball. Is not that good of a right fielder. Pie deserved to be on the roster for being a 5 tool player and hitting .300 with a .381 OBP after getting called up this September.

Hoffpauir is not on the roster because he doesn't have a position. His defense would have killed us in the playoffs. We already have enough problems with the hopper in left.

I think we wait to see what Z does. Him and Harden are the guys who can dominate on any given night. We just have to hope they're both right.

Sure didn't look like it when Ramirez and Loney socked em' out. And Edmonds ball? That's when it was blowing in, i thought he Thome'd it.

Pie was hitting .300???? and had a good OBP???? I didn't notice that at all when he played. Just seems every time he gets a start he doesn't live up to the hype. And a 5-tool player, that i wish we had now, was Angel Pagan.

Here's my advice for tonight and tomorrow:

Don't watch anything about the game.
Don't read anything about the game.
Don't listen to anyone who wants to talk shit about the Cubs.

Just try to relax, do something you like, get yourself in a good mood.
And get ready to cheer your ass off for tomorrow's game!

Good advice.

That works. We can both be pessimistic together. I'm hoping Billingsley's on tomorrow, but he's still a toss up as is Z. Kuroda, however- I'm not sure how he'll be under the spotlight. Hopefully he's as good in the clutch as he was in Japan. Either way, I don't trust the next two guys on the mound, so our hitting needs to be like it was today if not better. The crowd was pathetic at the beginning. They looked like they were freezing and didn't want to be there, but what do you expect, this is baseball in October. That's what happens when real fans can't get tickets to the games. You get the sponsors and their emo sons hitting up the stores outside of Wrigley buying their cubs gear. And then they come inside and just there to be there whether they win or lose.

I say emo, because i knew 4 kids from my school who went and they are a complete waste of a Cubs ticket. One of the kids left class wearing a As I Lay Dieing shirt and left straight for the game.

I don't agree with all of that, but it does really piss me off when things like that happen in the playoffs.
A lot of the real fans that have been going and supporting the team all year long get shut out when it comes to playoff tickets and its all people that are there because of corporate partnerships and favors.

I've been conditioned to assume that the Dodgers stranding 3 is just as bad as any good lineup stranding 8-10. I was utterly shocked at how many times we got on base, and especially shocked that we capitalized when we did. After Ethier struck out, I was almost sure we wouldn't threaten the rest of the day.

This.

His pitches had good life to them, and he was hitting 93 on his fastball. I really thought his slider and fastball looked really good today, he just couldn't get the ball where he wanted it, and his one real mistake got hammered. He shouldn't have been biting at the corners so much in the first place.

Billingsley doesn't get too deep in games... Rarely does he pitch over 6 innings, so if they can take some pitches and force deep counts and get to the MotherFucking middle relievers, we should be fine tomorrow. It'll help if Z can complete 6 IP too. I'd love to actually get the ball to Marmol with a lead for him to protect...

rick8285
10-02-2008, 03:05 AM
And, upon further review, the biggest AB of the night was Geo in the 6th when Aram lead off with a double and Soto had a 2-0 count and proceeded to swing at the next two pitches. In that spot, with 0 outs, he HAS to be taking at least one pitch, if not two. You can't go from 2-0 to 2-2 by swinging at 2 pitches, you're helping him out at that point. The 6th was a chance we had to get AT LEAST one run and put Lowe in a tough spot and get his pitch count up, yet we let him off the hook.

That's not what this team did all year, why now? I think that goes to Lou, he has to be coaching the young guy better in that spot. God we need a fucking W tomorrow!

It's just red, the cheezy sauce is the where the 'hot' stuff is. I still put fire sauce on top of it. Walking a pitcher is unacceptable. Dempster got out of some big innings but he was playing russian roullette with all those walks. I was kind of hoping that in between innnings he was going to go and shave off his beard to change it up some, would've been cool.

Side note: I like the fact that I don't have a computer at my apartment, nor do I have dvr/tivo capabilities, and my remote control doesn't work either. They need to pay attention to Fuk at the plate, he was watching a lot of pitches last night, and he swung at some good pitches to hit, too bad he cant hit right now. Thats what I saw at least, now Soriano ont eh other hand. :BANG

He did take one of those next two pitches, if you remember correctly. One of them was an ugly hanging slider that dropped right over the middle belt high. That's the pitch he SHOULD have been swinging at. That inning could've changed the momentum around after that lead-off double, but our hitters just didn't look like they had a plan up there at the plate.

Shit man, my all-time record would be impossible to tell..ive been to countless games. This year, I am 2-0...was at the milwaukee game when we scored 19 runs back in I think April..then i went to milwaukee and watched us smack them in game 3 of the 4 game sweep..

Ive been to some pretty sick games over the years...michael barrett's 8th inning grand slam to sweep st.louis 2 years ago, A-Gon's 10th inning walkoff to beat st.louis and to take the division lead in 2003...

I also slapped 25 bucks on this game tonight just for the hell of it. Might as well put all of my eggs in one basket..ill be a miserable wreck if we lose tonight, losing 25 bucks wouldnt make a difference

Serious question ... Has he ever thrown a complete shit game in a tight spot (IE big game situations)?

Well he threw 8 innings of 1 run ball last year in Game 1 and Lou fucked up by pulling after 8 when he could've gone 9. If he gives us a performance like that one, we should be able to take this one easily.

Some other thoughts about this series...

1) what the fuck was with the crowd last night? From a television standpoint, the place looked DEAD...it was very, very eerie. Almost as if the fans settled in and thought "God I hope something bad doesn't happen." We as fans should come in rowdy and behind our team. And to the Cubs organization, why not hand out some fucking rally towels or something? Every other team does it..it gets the fans more into the game. I'll do my best to get the bleachers up tonight, but damn...anyone going to the game tonight, lets make it a damn playoff atmosphere!

2) Regardless of what happens, I think Rich Harden is THE BEST pitcher on our staff and will win game 3. His stuff is literally un-hittable when he is on. I think game 3 is ours, and if we win tonight, so is the series.

3) We can kiss our dreams goodbye if our big guns continue to choke. Soriano has to pull his head out of his ass, Lee has to stop hitting into double plays, etc. Without them hitting, it doesn't matter if we can hold Manny in check or not. We need our team to come together right now, or this wonderful season is going to end tragically.

Great points. Soriano has consistently underachieved in the post season. Just one of many reasons the Yankees were not upset to trade him away. He has come through for us this year, and I don't want to hate on him too much, but we can't expect him to be clutch for us in the playoffs.

Your best point is about the fans. I was born a Cubs fan, and I have suffered as long as many. What I don't understand is why we as Cubs fans can have so much hope on April 1st, and no hope on October 1st. WTF??? We have the parts in place to get this done. We were not out of it by any means down two runs with Marshall taking the mound. But the fans all just shut up, sat down, and waited for the loss. That has to have an effect on the players. That was the quietest Wrigley has been all year. And the organization did nothing to get the fans into that game. How about some Thundersticks. The ticket revenue from one NLCS game would more then pay for 300,000 thundersticks to hand out to every fan coming in the gate for the playoff games.

I do think we right the ship tonight. Big Z always gives us a chance, and he has had a great season. The experts are putting too much stock in his last two outings, when really, they were not high presure situations. D-Lee needs to stop GIDP, Soriano needs to take a few more pitches, Theriot needs to move back to #2 in the lineup, DeRo needs to bat 6th, and we should be fine.

GO CUBS!

Thundersticks? Are you kidding me? The absence of lame ploys to get the fans into the game like this is what makes Wrigley great. The fans are already into the game, they don't need to be provoked.

Can you blame the crowd? They were into the game, particularly after DeRo's homer. And they were standing for that 2 out, 2 strike pitch to Loney. But that was a DEVASTATING blow. I mean, we were just sitting at home watching the game, and we were dead silent after that. The fans were attentive and into the game, but after that home run, how can you blame them for watching in silence? The players all say that stuff doesn't affect them. They have to handle their own business.

UCFish is right that it was after 6. In no way did Lou screw up. He wanted to bring Z back on short rest for Game 4. He handed the ball over to Marmol who was unhittable last year. Marmol was bad, how is that Lou's fault?

hey how did dempster pitch last night?

He was overthrowing and letting some pitches get real high in the zone, not to mention the ump behind the plate had a tight zone(he also frustrated Lowe but the Cubs hitters helped him out too much). Luckily Dempster didn't pay for his 7 walks(in 4.2 innings), that is until there were 2 outs in the 5th when Loney came up and hit a 0-2 pitch to the bleachers for a grand slam. Everything else slid away at that point. The bullpen didn't do much to contain, but the Cubs offense couldn't get guys around the bases anyways.
