Hey. Ya know, things are looking up. They scored a couple runs in the 9th and a few big bats woke up, if only for a moment. Maybe that gave them just a little of the confidence they needed. Who knows, maybe being far from Chicago will help get the pressures off the players' backs.
I really, REALLY feel bad for DeRosa. He (and Z) look like they are the only two guys who really want to win, and just one bad play happened to DeRo that really cost them a lot of runs. It was a hard hit ball, above average in difficulty. Bottom line, he should've made that play but it definitely doesn't define Mark's season. That guy gives you real effort out there and the rest of the team needs to really show the same effort level that Big Z and DeRo have.
Maybe Lou getting a bit fired up in teh press conference will help a bit. I don't know. All I know is that I like our chances with Rich Harden pitching on Saturday night. And we go from there. One day at a time. It wouldn't be so upsetting if we didn't have 2 of our worst games all season, but all you can do is go out the next day. They need to just start swinging the bats a little more freely.

I'm still cautiously optimistic. I like the pitching matchups in the next 2 games. Kosuke should be on the bench not stinking up the field. We really can't play too much worse than we did tonight. Hopefully we get a lot of Cubs fans in Dodger Stadium. There are usually quite a few during the regular season. Lou should have the team fired up as ewll.
And if the Cubs lose, it's still been a great season. The best in over 60 years. That's gotta count for something, right?

LOU PINIELLA: From now on I don't want to hear about Fukudome anymore as far as whether he's going to play or not. I'm going to play Fontenot or Reed Johnson or somebody else and that's the end of that story. The kid is struggling, and there's no sense sending him out there anymore.

You're insane, you blame D-Lee for 4 runs? Well I blame DeRosa for all 5. Routine double play to end the inning. Instead runs score and there's only 1 out.
Not to excuse Lee, but when some weird shit happens. Especially if it's the Cubs. It kind of gets into everyones heads. Now the gold glove D-Lee who owes us a ring, ya that fucker needed to make that play. But that was one out, and if I remember correctly wouldn't have ended the inning.

Its not like Chavez Ravine is a hard place to win. thats gotta be one of the easiest road destinations in the Bigs.
theres a HUGE difference between 3-0 and 2-0. you win the next game with Harden and youre 1 game away from a tiebreaker at Wrigley, it can happen very easily.
bottom line, if youre good enough to win the world series, youre good enough to win a few games against the Dodgers, in whatever order they come (last 3 of 5? no problem).
(is any of this helping?)
I dont care about your past of losing, the seasons not over so hanging your head today is fuckin weak (last night it was ok).
oh, and, during the season, if the Cubs were heading to LA and needed some wins to stay in first, you would have expected AT LEAST 2 out of 3 in LA, and a sweep was eminently possible. I dont see whats so different now.

I just cant believe that Zambrano pitched a great game and then we send in weak pitchers who tack on 4 runs, WTF Lou, we would have been within 3 runs and Wood and Marmol get the crowd up and roaring, why the fuck werent they kept in the game, its the playoffs, you keep the best in for as long as possible.

And Z came through big time, probably the only pitcher ever to leave a game down 6-0 and receive a standing ovation. So now we need Harden to come through. Very possible, then it's up to the offense and defense to do their job. Which is scary, but possible.

bottom line, if youre good enough to win the world series, youre good enough to win a few games against the Dodgers, in whatever order they come (last 3 of 5? no problem).
Man i totally agree with you. We've played to 2 worst games of the year. The past 2 games was not the Cubs team we've been watching the past 162 games of the regular season. We can comeback.
Let's see the bats light up and start scoring some runs. Edmonds will finally get hit a HR, and that will be the turning point of the series.
Last night was hard, but i got my head up. We'll start chipping away Saturday, and hopefully bring this back for a Game 5 masterpiece by Dempster.

Is Fukudome a dirty word?
HER SCHOOL THINKS SO | Cubs jersey lands student in hot water
What's in a name? Ask Chicago Cubs fan Jill Howe, 15.
The Elgin High School sophomore had to remove her Kosuke Fukudome jersey and wear a gym T-shirt to class Wednesday because of a misunderstanding about how to pronounce the All-Star right-fielder's last name.
"Someone stopped me in the hall and asked me what the back of my jersey said," Jill said.
She replied that it was the name of Cubs player, pronounced foo-koo-DOUGH-may. The school staffer wasn't so sure and consulted others.
Then a dean, Susan Matei, told Howe the jersey was inappropriate. Matei made Jill take it off and wear a gym shirt instead.
Jill called her mother after school to tell her what happened.
"She's a big Cubs fan, and we got the jersey at Dick's," said Jill's mom, Nancy Howe. "We were going to get a [Kerry] Wood one, but it cost more."
Nancy Howe called Matei, who confirmed what happened.
"I told her anyone's last name can be misconstrued," Nancy Howe said.
By late afternoon, common sense -- and proper pronunciation -- prevailed.
Associate Principal Alan Flota said students may wear Fukudome apparel at school.
"As long as it is a legitimate name, they will be allowed to wear it," Flota said.
Jill said she could see how the misunderstanding happened.
Students occasionally purposefully mispronounce Fukudome's last name, she said.
"Some people like to be stupid about it."
The bolded made me laugh out loud :lol, he's already a clearance jersey?

The Cubs team we've watched the last two games, is not the Cubs team from this season. So, lets try to turn back the clock so to speak. Maybe some good karma would be to go back to our avatars from this season. And may we never try it again, because it's been working against us big time. We've tried it before with the Cubs, and even with the Bears.

How do you figure? At least they made a real run in the 03 playoffs.

Im just disgusted by our playoff performance...absolutely gutless. And Fukudome sucks, and Im so glad Lou is done with him it sounds like...hes absolutely terrible.
On a bright note, we have Rich Harden going for us in game 3...in my opinion, Rich has THE BEST stuff on our pitching staff when he is on. He is well rested and should be ready to completely shut the dodgers down. If we can just steal that game saturday night, new hope will suddenly be found. One game, actually, one inning at a time. I am frustrated and sick to my stomach right now over this team...but its really not over.
p.s. Being at the game last night was a...unique experience. There is truly a dark presence in wrigley field in October. Not saying the crowd wasnt into it (because we were, 100%), but still. The national tv cameras, the blimps, the NLDS paint on the field, and the fact that it was played at night...i was immediately brought back to the NLCS in 2003. when Lee had that fielding error, i cant even describe the hush that came over the crowd...it was just like "really? again?"...Just unexplainable unless you were there. I dont believe in actual "curses", but i do believe that a mindset is incredibly important in life. And if you don't go in there EXPECTING to win (players and fans included), it just isnt going to happen. Something needs to change the way our organization thinks as a collective unit. Everyone is scared shitless of being let down, OR letting people down. That, in my opinion, is the root of the problem.

we aren't literally cursed because there is no such thing...and the dodgers arent THIS much better than us, in fact they arent better than us at all. we have a GOOD baseball team, and we have had the absolute best team in the NL all season. This is clearly a 100% mental issue. And its so frustrating. How can we ever be confident in a cubs playoff team again if they blow this? I want to be, but itll be difficult, thats for sure. This team seemed like they GOT it...they didnt give a shit about the 100 year thing, just played their game, battled through adversity, etc. This was (is) the team to do it. I guess in the year the red sox finally ended their "curse", they were down 3-0 in the series and losing in the 9th inning. Crazier things have happened folks. I also really like our spot in game 3. No matter what our players say, they did feel pressure at wrigley field. They clearly did. How else do you explain 4 fielding errors? I think they loosen up on the road where they arent being boo'd by their own fans.

Well see, I don't buy that for everyone. Guys like Zambrano and Wood. Guys who've always been Cubbies, and were witness to 2003. But guys like Lee or a Marquis. With Harden on the mound, you have to think as Lou. We can shut the Dodgers down. So honestly, I'd be like "the only way you're playing, is if you produced." the only thing that sucks about this, is I'd like DeRosa in RF. But if he couldn't cover it at Wrigley, no way he'd cover more ground at Dodger stadium. Anyways look at our post season stats.
Mark DeRosa - .500 AVG, .500 OBP
Derrek Lee - .429 AVG, .500 OBP
Jim Edmonds - .286 AVG, .286 OBP
Aramis Ramirez - .250 AVG, .250 OBP
Ryan Theriot - .250 AVG, .250 OBP
Geovany Soto - .143 AVG, .250 OBP
Alfonso Soriano - .111 AVG, .111 OBP
Koskue Fukudome - .000 AVG, .000 OBP
Honestly, if I were Lou I'd send a message by benching some of these guys. Pie gave us a good at bat, add that in with what he did in September. Also with how big the Dodger Stadium outfield is, we need his range in center. Theriot, I like the guy, but again with the defense. Maybe we go with Cedeno? I'd also love to see Sneaky, but is DeRosa healthy enough for right?

I think DeRo can play right. I mean, I find it hard to put all the blame on DeRo last night. I mean, he should've gotten at least one out, but that was a hard hit ball and not the easiest of plays. And he's the only one who's producing offensively, it seems.
They need to play solid defense and get a couple clutch hits if they have any chance at winning game 3.

Given performance, if I was Lou I'd go about it like this. Given that DeRosa could play right. If not, you bench Sneaky and put Reed in right and Soriano in left but him 8th.
1. LF, Reed Johnson
2. 2B, Mike Fotenot
3. 1B, Derrek Lee
4. 3B, Aramis Ramirez
5. RF, Mark DeRosa
6. SS, Ronny Cedeno
7. CF, Felix Pie
8. C, Soto
9. (pitcher)

He hit .270 but was in the 300's most of the year. He's also a very good defensive shortstop. GREAT range, and a cannon arm. His only problem in years past was his so-so fielding. But he's been a lot better this year. And we need that defense behind Harden.

Dempster and Wood will likely get resigned at huge raises. In the offseason, we really do need to try and pray someone would trade for Soriano.

"Yea, you know what, from now on I don't Fukudome anymore as far as whether or not he's gonna play ... The kid is struggling and there's no sense sending him out there anymore." - Lou

I don't want to hear about the 100 year thing. There's no excuse for the way the Cubs have played in the first two games. Piniella needs to just put the guys who are playing the best out there and forget about everything else. Maybe getting away from Wrigley and the pressure of being at home will loosen them up a little... but I'm not too hopeful right now.
This is what we got Harden for, so I expect a good outing. It doesn't matter how he pitches though, if the rest of the team still sucks.

DeRosa's Blog from Bleed Cubbie Blue.com, who then got it from DeRosa's Blog page:
"You've got to let this flow over you and consume you for a couple hours. You have to. "Z" was pitching a great game, he's feeling good, the double play gets turned, we go back into the dugout and the whole game is different. Our offense is able to relax and it's different.
But when you find yourself down 5-0, a team that has a 1-0 lead in the series, they're able to relax, Billingsley is able to pound the strike zone, their hitters are a lot more patient, a lot more calm. They're trying to have good at-bats and tack on runs. We're trying to press to get the score tied and take the lead. For me, this is terrible. I don't know -- I'll be up for awhile tonight."

Zambrano was far from perfect. He still had a chance to get out of that inning at 2-0. He left that pitch up for Martin to clear the bases. Now, I know he had to get 5 or 6 outs in that inning and I don't blame him, but it's not like he was perfect either.

What a bunch of fucking bullshit. That actually offended me. The Cubs are the most tragic franchise. We've made the playoffs 6 times in 60 years. And all of those years but one have ended very quickly. Last year was annoying, but this year really is painful.
To be honest, I really think we can win game 3. However, I still have that thought that something devastating will happen at some point. I think the players feel that too. They say they are unaffected, but they play like they are waiting for the unavoidable; waiting for something terribly bad to happen.

Almost a dozen witnesses -- including Piniella and Soriano -- separately told the same story: An animated Piniella raised his voice during a conversation in a room off the main clubhouse with Soriano, Aramis Ramirez and Carlos Marmol, speaking in Spanish, challenging the team to take care of business in Los Angeles and get the series back to Chicago.
Nobody was singled out, and Piniella sent a similar message in English to other players in the clubhouse Thursday night after that ugly fiasco of a loss.
''I just said, 'Let's go,''' Piniella said. ''I just gave 'em a little pep talk.''
Albeit, with spice.
''He said if we want it, if we have some balls, we can play Game 5 in Chicago,'' Soriano said. ''He's right.''
''I said the same thing to the other guys in the lunch room,'' Piniella said.
I hope this team has some balls. Cubs.
