Yes. You have to pull out all of the stops right now...theres no way we can even consider how Rich will feel in the "later rounds" or anything...we need to go game at a time. If his arm hurts or something, then obviously take him out...but what im saying is that "saving" him would be incredibly stupid at this point. Having said that, Dempster is available out of the bullpen tonight, so if shit hits the fan, thats a much better option than some of our other bullpen guys.

Seriously, noone should post in this thread during the game. Go post in the NLDS - Dodgers

vs Cubs thread, but stay away from this one. If someone posts a reply in here then just

ignore them, they'll get the hint. There are way too many 'snowballing posts' when things

get a little iffy on the field or in the game. This thread is sacred, a Greek Orthodox priest

should come in here and have a holy reply. If you're one of those sad saps that just want to

bitch and moan with other people then stay the fuck away, we don't need that now, at least

while the game is still being played! Who's with me?

Harden is 5-1 with a 1.77 ERA since switching leagues. Inning-for-inning, he's been as dominant as CC Sabathia, but hasn't gotten the same publicity.

Harden's concern is two-fold: his much-discussed health and his control. The Athletics dangled him before the Trade Deadline because of his injury history. The Cubs bit, and they exercised caution with Harden during the second half. He maxed out at seven innings per start despite some gaudy lines and skipped one turn at the beginning of September to stay rested for the playoff run. Harden said he's ready to go all out now.

"I've been up to 120 pitches so far this year, and I feel like I can go more," he said. "I've definitely shown I can do that. I know they've been keeping me on a little bit of a strict pitch count. Now that we're in the playoffs, hopefully we can stretch it out a little more."

Fukudome skips optional workout after Piniella says he's seen enough

What the Cubs had Friday was an optional workout before tonight's Game 3 of the National League Division Series.

Just about all of the Cubs were there, except first baseman Derrek Lee, who jetted north to Sacramento to visit family, and center fielder Jim Edmonds, who lives in Southern California. There was no ready-made excuse for the absence of right fielder Kosuke Fukudome.

Piniella has no time to worry about it now, but the Cubs have a $38 million problem on their hands. That's how much is owed Fukudome in the next three seasons. Remember, 2008 was the cheap part of the four-year deal, with Fukudome getting $6 million this season, plus a $4 million signing bonus that sweetened the overall pot. Next season, the salary jumps to $11.5 million.

That's a lot of money for a defensive replacement.

With Fukudome, the situation is much more dicey. He was a star in Japan. He was the starting center fielder for the NL All-Star team in July at Yankee Stadium. He has a lot of pride and a star-like ego.

He won't go away quietly.

And there is little chance he will walk away from that $38 million and go home to Japan, where he would face major embarrassment.

There has been talk within the organization that maybe Fukudome would be best served next season having a private hitting coach -- someone who knows him well from his days in Japan. There also has been grumbling that Fukudome hasn't spent much time working on extra hitting for a player stuck in such a steep slump.

It's hard to imagine why a player in Fukudome's super slide wouldn't put in the extra work to reverse his ugly hitting trend.

Fukudome entered May hitting .327 with 19 walks and 18 strikeouts. In May, he hit .293, and his walks (16) still outnumbered his strikeouts (15). In June, his average was .264, and for the first time, he went through a month with more strikeouts (22) than walks (17).

In July, things got ugly -- he hit .236 with 25 strikeouts and nine walks. In August, his average dipped to .193, but his eye apparently got better, with 16 strikeouts and 13 walks. In September, his average bottomed out at .178, with eight strikeouts and seven walks. That's when Piniella finally benched his All-Star.
I wonder why Koskue skipped the workouts, where else would he go? Also sucks he got benched (he shouldn't have started till tonight), because this is the one pitcher Koskue could still probably hit. He faced him many times in Japan. He also went 2 for 3 back in May against him.

But if Koskue isn't going to put in the work, I hope he does decide to leave the money and return to Japan. Because the only way he could ever return to Koskue from April/May is with hard work. He's yet to make any adjustments after pitchers adjusted to him. So FUK him.

Damn. I never thought at the beginning of the season we'd hate Kosuke and love Jimmy Edmonds. Never.
I don't love Jim Edmonds. He really hasn't done much. He's hit for a horrible average, even with the Cubs. He's hit a few meaningful dingers. Though if he sends us to the NLCS, I will love Edmonds. If he's the reason we went to a World Series. I'd buy an authentic Jim Edmonds Cubs jersey. Even if we don't resign him.

Having come over from the American League, Harden has more experience facing Dodgers newcomer Manny Ramirez than most Cubs pitchers. Ramirez is 3-for-11 (.273) against Harden with all three hits home runs. The rest of the Dodgers are 2-for-23 (.087) against Harden.

I doubt Soriano will hit. He always sucks in the playoffs because the pitching is better. Soriano can get very hot, but he does it against bad pitching. He can murder 3, 4, and 5 starters. He can hit middle relievers. He can't hit elite starters and closers. They don't make enough mistakes. Their breaking pitches are too good.

Well with that 1st out, in 44 games and 170 at bats. Soriano has 3 extra base hits in the post season. Not sure after that out, but he came into the game hitting .219 in the post season. He's 1 for 10 so far in this series.

Maybe I'll look for it.

It's a shame that they're not bothering to keep up with it though. Well, maybe they are, but are too ashamed to come back around now.

Even though it was pretty ugly, I watched New York lose last year, and continued to follow them after they were statistically eliminated.

The Cubs have had lots of good players, and deserving teams have had weird shit happen. How does a team that dominated the NL all year, perform this bad in the playoffs? Game 1 & 2 starters made the All Star team. Harden is no slouch.

But it's going to be 101 after my Dodgers get done with them tonight. Just know, it's impossible for anyone to understand the pain of a Cubs fan. Don't even bring up Boston. At least they were in it at times. They've made it to the World Series and lost. Most Cubs teams are just horrible, so most of the time you're wondering if you'll just ever be good.

Honestly Cubs fans, when will we ever win another playoff game? 9 straight playoff losses is RIDICULOUS! I'm just sick of it though. After 2003, I told myself I'd never set myself up for that again. That I'd be smart and never believe in them again till it happened.

Which I will say, I was doing a good job because deep down I never though the 07' team would get it done. This year though, I drank the kool aid. This was the best Cubs team I've ever seen in my life. It's a joke the 03' team got farther.

But I feel so helpless now, because where do we go from here? Are we ever going to have a better Cubs team then this? I mean it's bad enough we wait years and years between playoff teams. It was very weird going there back to back years. But how Cub of us to go 0-6 during consecutive post seasons.

I know we'll all be back next year, happy as ever. Maybe Hendry will sign Vlad from his hopsital bed. Thing is, my top FA target for the Cubs is CC. But his post season history sucks. Just like most of this team.

That moment when I watched all the Dodgers celebrating on the field, before I wanted to throw things and muder people. That was a bad moment in my life.

But ya not only was our team this good, when else will the rest of the NL be this bad? Statistically speaking, no one else really matched up to us. We fucking support our team like none other and half of our team seems to give up and just decide to friggen groundout. I mean godammit, if your gonna win 97 games at least put up a fucking fight. This series was like beating up a little teeny 2nd grader

Guys it has been a fun year....I enjoy posting with all of you a lot.

I know it is devastating but hopefully we can make it happen next year.

I just wish the same team that played all season had came to the playoffs.

Props to Z and Lee. They played some inspired baseball.

Cubs '08................There is always next year :(

Zep, you're a stats guy....when was the last time all four of the Cubs infielders had an error in the same game? It can't be recently....shit like that is only saved for really brutal attacks on the fans...like '69 or '84.
I'll remember this question and revisit it at a later date, that kind of research is just too painful right now.

This is my 2000th....I'm going to be done for tonight....I'd like to be done for a long while, but I know I'll be back here tomorrow or in the next few days to bitch about this fucked up situation, in which I can do nothing about.

All you Cubs fans in here are great people and we all deserve better than this.
Started to get currious, so I went to a stats site I know to see if they had anything.

CUBS ARE NOW 7-20 AT WRIGLEY IN THE PLAYOFFS
The Cubs have a 7-20 postseason record at Wrigley Field, the only venue in major-league history in which the home team has a record more than five games under .500 in the postseason.

EACH CUBS INFIELDER COMMITS AN ERROR
The Cubs made four errors Thursday night, one from each infield position. It's only the second time in major league history that a team had an error from each infield position in a postseason game. It also happened in Game 1 of the 1934 World Series. The Tigers had errors from Hank Greenberg (1B), Charlie Gehringer (2B), Billy Rogell (SS) and two from Marv Owen (3B). Detroit lost the game, 8-3, to the Cardinals.

Edit: I'll look and see if and when the Cubs have done that during the regular season.

Ok and last time the Cubs have had an error by each infielder was April of 1977... just wow.
LOS ANGELES -- On Thursday, Cubs infielders Derrek Lee, Mark DeRosa, Ryan Theriot and Aramis Ramirez each committed an error in the 10-3 National League Division Series loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers. It wasn't the first time in Cubs history that all four infielders had been charged with an error in a game.

On April 27, 1977, in a 21-3 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field, first baseman Larry Biittner, second baseman Manny Trillo, shortstop Ivan DeJesus and third baseman Steve Ontiveros each committed an miscue. To make matters worse, center fielder Jerry Morales also made an error for a total of five in the game.
The only other teams with 4 errors in a NLDS game were: 2003 Braves, 1995 Rockies, and 1981 Expos.

• Alfonso Soriano finished the series 1-for-14 and is hitting .036 (2-for-28) in the postseason since joining the Cubs. For his career, he's batted .212 in the postseason.

Soriano is a bigger problem then Fuk. Honestly if we could get rid of both and have next year be LF - M. Ramirez and RF - Vlad Guererro who's an FA as well. Then I'd be happy. But honestly Manny is going to decline fast, and be shit as well. Just a warning.

"According to scouts, Fukudome would have no value if Hendry tried to shop him. He isn't going to go back quietly and resume his career with the Chunichi Dragons, walking away from his deal with the Cubs. That would send a terrible signal as teams around the majors become more aggressive in pursuing players from Asia. One scout interviewed Saturday suggested a course of action that could be tough to swallow.

'He has to go to the minors,' the scout said. 'He has to get rid of all those habits, pulling out on pitches, collapsing. He'll never hit the way he's hitting now, and this is a tough place to work out your problems. Always has been.'"
