i don't think it's so much sentimentalism as it is Pat being a control freak... honestly! he has to have his way or he's a big titty baby. for years i let him do what he wanted because it was easier but now i just feel like being a bitch... er, asserting myself :p
we talked a little bit about it last night... how all my hallmark ornaments are significant because of the history behind them. see, every year we get at least four new ornaments... i get one for pat and nick and he gets one for me and one for the family. as i'm unboxing them & putting them on the tree i can see the dates and think stuff like "awww! remember when nick was into dinosaurs? here's one from when he was five" you know??
we butt heads a lot @ christmas because all of our "traditions" come from his family (not that i really had one, but you understand right?) for example:
-no presents under the tree until christmas eve after the kid is in bed
-don't put the tree topper on til very last thing on christmas eve
-have to read Twas the Night Before Christmas before putting out the cookies & milk for Santa
i mean, they're nice traditions and all but they're HIS and i never had any say so in the matter.
