Being too positive is just as unhealthy as too negative. The goal is to be accurate.

I could go on and on with this, learned helplessness and explanatory style are my psychological areas of expertise. :)

:) I'm positive in general. It's probably impossible to go through life without ever feeling something negative, but I do consider myself generally a positive person.

Now, if I could only find a way to change my natural expression....which as often been described as "pissed off." I'm totally not aware of it! I can't tell you how many times I'm innocently walking down the street and some stranger (usually an old dude) says something to me like, "Smile, it's not that bad." And I'm like, " ."

Oh my god, I get that all the time too!! I think my eyebrows naturally go into a "furrow", lol, and I always look pissed. When I meet people and get to know them, I always get "when I first met you, I thought you were such a bitch", or when I show people pictures of me people are like "Geez, would it kill you to smile!?" I hate it, cause I'm generally a positive and really nice person!!

:lol Wow! It's amazing how common this is! I thought it was just me. I get that thing, too, where people are like "You looked so mad" or "you looked like a bitch." And I'm like "how does one *look* like a bitch??" Go figure. I get just as many compliments on my smile, when I DO smile....

So maybe I'll just keep it this way, and then simply dazzle people with my smile! :D

I am positive outwardly, in many aspects, but much too negative towards myself.
I try to find the balance. There is so many glorious things in this world to appreciate and I embrace them completely. Those things help me center my own struggles and I try to find a good balance in that "space between".
If we didn't stumble and fall every once in awhile, we might not be able to see and truly appreciate the intricate color of a single fallen leaf in autumn.

There are some professions where it's beneficial to be a negative person. Being negative makes you more critical, more able to spot mistakes. Most lawyers have a negative explanatory style.

I was just in an interview yesterday explaining why this is why I didn't want to become a reporter. The very nature of reporting is the search for conflict and so it's (a) all you see and (b) all you want to see. I could barely take 3 years of looking at the world that way, let alone a lifetime.

That's also kind of the problem I have with my job now.

I'll get back to you with my results if I ever finish this survey. :)

Hmmmm....my S.O. and I have the *opposite* theory. That it's easier for people to be negative - that's why so many people walk around being miserable fuddy-duddies. That's why all your coworkers can do is bitch about the weather, bitch about the bitch down the hall, bitch about the boss, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch, bitch! That's why so many people hate calling their moms, or that "certain" friend, 'cuz it sucks to hear them whining all the time....

But maybe you're right. It is definitely easier to get "stuck" in a rut, but that doesn't necessarily mean that it's easier getting there.

Gawd...now I'm just confusing myself. I think I need nourishment.

Anyway, time to share more things of Positive Psychology with y'all.

This may sound a little hokey, but bear with me, there's actual data that suggests these activities work.

Some people don't have gratitude as one of their top five, but it's an incredibly powerful strength to have. Being able to look at things that have happened and things going on now, and being thankful for them will highly increase your subjective well being (psychological term for happiness :lol).

How do you do it? Easy. My boss would have said to keep a gratitude journal, where you list 5 things each day you're thankful for, then keep track of them. I personally think that's a little too much. It's a good idea for an assignment (which we did for the curriculum we wrote), but not for us. I find it's easy to just think of 5 things you're thankful for while you're laying down about to go to sleep. I find it calms me down and helps sleep come easier.
