Thought I'd share these. Just got it a week ago and I'm really liking it. Best 12-string I've ever played. I highly recommend it to anyone in the market for a 12-string Taylor.

Nothing to make it custom really. The whole Walnut line for Taylor isn't in their normal production run anymore so to get one it has to be special ordered. I guess the only thing custom would be no cutaway and a 3 piece back. I also paid less than the list price since I didn't get the cutaway.

Basically yeah, but mine has differences that may or may not make it better than his depending on how you look at it.

Yeah, Id think it would be hard to play a guitar with only "One hand and 5 fingers" ;) actaully a guitar is played with two hands. ;)
but it only takes practice to play a 12 string (as with anything) you adapt to it.

Oh, and btw, to the person who said they've never seen a 3 piece back on a Taylor....
I recently got an 814ce (2 piece back). A week later at a different store, I saw a 3 piece back and fell in love with it. Anyway, when you see a 3 piece back on a Taylor that wasn't custom ordered that way, it means they didn't have enough wood for a 2 piece when the started to make the guitar. They put a third piece in to compensate. It's strictly asthetic and doesn't affect the sound at all. I'd rather have one, myself. :)
I bet you played grey street on it first :)

Taylor's have many guitars that are 3 piece backs. Most of their limited's are 3 piece backs. It doesnt have anything to do with running out of wood. Both of my taylors are 3 piecs backs, a 714ce-ltd and a 314ltd
I just put in a request for a custom taylor to add to my collection. Here is what i requested:
koa top/back/sides
x14 body size
no cut away
no electronics
celtic inlays (the ones he has on his W65)
I've wanted an all koa guitar for awhile. I was looking at the John Denver model, but that one is $3700, this custom is gonna be around $2500. I'm not gonna be able to get it yet, I was just curious as to how much it will cost. I'll let you guys know what it costs when i get the quote back.

Been doing Kit Kat Jam, Big Eyed Fish, Bartender, JTR, Spoon and Raven. Bartender doesn't sound as good as I thought it would but I also haven't played it much. All the rest sound amazing. I can definitely see why Dave chose this 12-string.

Something I noticed - His inlay dot(s) designs are different then yours. So what im thinking is his was also custom. (then agian I dont know what the standard inlays were for the W65 when they were in production.)

Possibly custom, or maybe just a different inlay from when he got his. Since he started around 2001 or so with the 12-string his is at least 3 years older so its a good chance they did different inlays back then. Do you a pic of the cover or a link to it?

if memory serves me correctly, they changed the walnut inlays in 2003.....
so that's probably the reason for the difference.

Hey, I was thinking about this:
If you have the folsom Field DVD pop it in. Go on 'JTR' you can kinda see that inlay, Its the same one on that Mag. (I was telling you about earlier.)
He even uses it agian later on in the concert...on BEF..then Bartender. so if you cant make it out on JTR that good.... check those out. But you can get the just of it.
(side note) On Folsom, I always enjoy when Dave and monk swap in between BEF--> Bartender. -nice little moment-

I was just passing along info that I got from multiple sources. One from Taylor.
I'm sure there are guitars that are designed to have 3-piece backs, however, I was told that if you come across a model that doesn't list the 3-piece as a feature, they just used a 3rd piece of wood because of the size.
whatever.
Chris, again, amazingly beautiful guitar. Reminds me, I left my 814 last night. Poor thing. She's probably scared.

From what I understand the 3-piece backs are for looks, but also mainly for when they're running low on wood and need to make one to finish the guitar. I asked for one just so that it would be different from other ones and since it was a custom order thought I should do something somewhat unique for it.

what fucking difference does it make to you? it is a sweet ass guitar, and he is obviously proud of it. you must have been one of those kids who would go to birthday parties and cry all day because it wasn't your birthday. why can't you just say 'nice guitar, i would have picked something different though?'

Ok........So does that mean that anyone who listens to Dave and buys a guitar that Dave happens to use buys it just because Dave uses it? I happen to like the sound of Walnut. All the other 12-string guitars I played did not sound as nice nor look as nice. And if I choose to spend a "shit" load of money (which I don't think I did since I got a good deal from a good dealer) then thats what I want. I make the money, I spend it on what I want.

Absolutely. If you think otherwise you're a fool. You wouldn't happen to buy any one of the same guitars that Dave uses. He has a fairly specific collection. This dude wanted Dave's 12 string and found the closest thing to it that he could find and afford.
Fortunately Dave uses some of the best guitars in their class, so its not a bad thing.
...and to whoever said it doesn't matter if he's a good player or not...yes it really does. Yea you can spend your money however you want, but if you not already a well-practiced and accomplished player, you don't deserve to have your fumbling hands all over such a classic piece. I've seen one too many beginners with 2 or 3 thousand dollar guitars and they are just abusing the instrument. Somebody put a lot of hard work into creating that guitar using super quality material, just so someone else can warp it or break it or stick in the attic when they get frustrated.
There are plenty of really talented musicians out there using mediocre instruments that deserve something better and can't afford it. That's why I hate seeing beginners with deep pockets.

It would be nice if the really talented people who can't afford good instruments could have ones like Taylors or Martins. And it does suck if someone spends a lot of money on one and sticks it in their attic....but guess what. Not everyone does that. I know I don't. I've been playing for a few years now, slowly getting better, and try and practice for at least an hour a day whenever I have free time from work. Granted, so won't see me anytime soon playing in front of people because I'm just not that good and frankly do not have the desire to as of now. Maybe one day yes. Does that mean I don't deserve to play what make/model guitar I want and can afford? No. And if you say it does then you're just wrong.
Now, regarding buying the closest thing I could afford and just wanting the same guitar....does that mean that since Dave uses a W65 that anyone that listens to Dave can't buy one? That makes no sense. I guess anyone that uses the same guitar pick as Dave is copying him too huh? Or if I buy another Taylor I'm copying him? Good thing I don't use the same guitar strings as Dave, then I'd be copying him too. Guess by playing DMB songs I'm copying Dave also. Damn I'm just a copycat I guess :BANG
I bought that guitar because I like Taylors. I own a 214 also. Dave doesn't have one. Was that original? Or since Dave uses Taylor guitars does that mean I only bought it to be like Dave? I've tried Fenders, Martins, Carlos Robelli, Garrisons and numerous others before deciding on a Taylor 214. From that purchase on I decided I would only buy Taylors. Walnut sounds awesome and looks cool. Its not my fault Dave plays a W65 and that happens to be the one I wanted. Guess I should of realized that since Dave uses a W65, 914C and 714 that I couldn't buy anyone of those or else I'd be copying him....and we all know how bad that is :rolleyes

Chris,
Don't give this guy a thought. i mainly lurk here because i think this site is loaded with a lot of filth like this guy but this is absurd. enjoy and be proud of your guitar. i believe you bought it for your own reasons and even if you didn't who cares. you're happy. that's all that matters. do all people that own a DM3MD = posers? umm........no. do all owners of any signature model = posers? umm.......no. just a stupid stupid post that doesn't deserve the time of day to respond to. you're guitar is gorgeous and i bet it sounds great. enjoy it and be proud of it.
TurboPGT, get a life dude. taylor, martin, etc put out hundreds of guitars a day. yes, there's a lot of work put into each but if they ship out a few hundred guitars a day then that's a few hundred new bad guitar players in this world according to you. playing guitar isn't about filling arenas. it's about release. it's a release from the stresses of life and something to be proud of. if you suck, you suck. if you're good you're good. as long as you have fun who cares. get a life and quit being jealous over chris's W65.
btw..........if i were being real critical......you're signature line is as lame and teeny bopper as it gets. look in the mirror

:thumbsup X 4
Post of the month.

I own a Taylor 110.
It is my favorite guitar I have ever owned. It sounds beautiful, feels wonderful, and does everything I want it to do.
If I wanted a 12-string (assuming I could afford it, I would buy that same guitar)
------
Fuck off if you think the only reason Chris bought that Taylor is because Dave plays it. Sure, there may be some influence, but regardless. That guitar is high quality; it's one of the best guitars you can buy. You're obviously jealous.
It would be a different story if Dave played a Rogue acoustic guitar with shit-ass acoustic pick-ups, and sales shot through the roof.

... you don't deserve to have your fumbling hands all over such a classic piece....
I think the more accurate statement is that YOU don't deserve a forum to express your asinine opinions. You don't know what you are talking about.
I like led zepplin, hendrix, clapton, dave, jack johnson....
I guess that means I can't own a Gibson Les Paul, Fender Stratocaster, Martin, or Taylor...too bad since those are the most popular guitars in modern music.

Dave has used that guitar before........better get rid of it quick. You wouldn't want to be unoriginal would you :ugh
Those Ovations sound cool. Nice loud sound. A friend of mine really likes them. I was thinking of buying one but ended up with the Taylor 214. Just liked the overall feel and look better. The main thing I didn't like about them was the plastic, or whatever it is, back. Do you need to humidify though? If you don't that would definitely be a plus. Its sometimes a pain to humidify the Taylors after every use. But I knew what I was getting into.

No, I don't humidify. I don't have any cracks or warping problems.
The guitar always stays in tune too.
It's a nice guitar, and I'm glad I got it.
I love the sound on this particular one.

Thats cool that it always stays in tune. Mine goes out a lot, especially when the strings are new. But once they're on for a month they're usually pretty good. Glad you liking it.
