I just downloaded a show from the archieve (Rusted Root) and in the download I got a set of md5's. Is this necessary? I thought the checksums were built into the actual flac files (that is what I have read) or am I missing something?

I thought so too - as everytime I get flac files they seem to verify themselves in frontend.
I'm interested in the answer

some tapers/converters include md5's with flac files
I guess it's to double check them
there was some discussion on the groove (when there was a groove) a while back about this and some people said an md5 will strip some of the metadata from a flac file but I'm not really sure

The flac d&t show I got from ants had the md5's in a .txt file which made sense to me but this one had actual md5's that verrified through mkw. I don't know, I suppose it doesn't really matter but I wanted to make sure because I am new to flac and this seemed to be a little weird. Thanks for the help Crumbo.
On a sidenote, I personally love flac, seems much easier to use than shn so whenever I have an option I will go with flac. Question is, how many times can I write flac in this post.
Where is Erich!!

i like it much better too, and from what i've read, it has an edge over shn cause it's made specifically for audio files. don't know the answer to your question though, seems odd you would get a md5 for mkw with flac files....but since the flac checksums are part of the file, they should be fine as long as you don't get an error in frontend. is that right, erich?

You need to realize what an md5 is. It checks to make sure that the files are exactly the originals. FLAC files have built-in checksums for the wav data they contain. These internal checksums do NOT check things like meta data added to the files. FLAC files have room for things like their track title, band, date, etc. The internal checksum for a FLAC file does NOT check that these are just like the original. However, md5 checksums, by their nature, verify the entire file.
Realize that md5's are nowhere near limited to shn. They can be used to verify ANY file. Go to download a linux distro, and most of the time there will be an md5 checksum available for it. A lot of sites accompany their downloads with md5's, and it's to verify that the files are original with no viruses or other nasties.

wow, this is like, tripple word score for Erich today. I purposly didnt open this thread to prevent myself from a long post, but when i searched my name i got this :lol. So anyway, on to the question...
Archive.org is a funny place. sometimes people include MD5s with flac or ape sets not because theyre neccessary, or even because the taper/seeder prefers them, but because for the archives purposes it makes the automated check before the intergration easier. I included MD5s with one of my FLAC sets for that reason. It kept constantly failing the upload check, so i threw it in on the advisement of the admin there and it gave me a report via email about it. I dont like it there though.
Everyone kind of touched upon what MD5s are compared to flac fingerprints. I guess elaborating wont be neccessary, but if anyone wants me to, im bored.

Here's a totally different question for you, Eric(h). Sorry guys, I'm not trying to be a jerk in hijacking your thread, but it looks like the original question has been answered, and I don't like cluttering boards with similar topics.
I too, have a quick FLAC question. I'm new to the board, and not very familiar with formats and whatnot, but I just downloaded a show that was entirely FLAC files, and I am trying to figure out how to convert them so I can listen to them. Any help would be GREATLY appreciated. Thanks for helping out a noob.

Oy, nevermind. I just found another thread in my search that had the answer. Thanks anyway.
