I think Jeb would be much better off running for the next Rep. nomination (I mean '12 or '16). I don't think there's a good way to spin a possible 20 of 28 years being controlled by one family.

She was his girl; he was her boyfriend
She be his wife; take him as her husband
A surprise on the way, any day, any day
One healthy little giggling dribbling baby boy
The wise men came three made their way
To shower him with love
While he lay in the hay
Shower him with love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
Not very much of his childhood was known
Kept his mother Mary worried
Always out on his own
He met another Mary for a reasonable fee, less than
Reputable as known to be
His heart was full of love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
When Jesus Christ was nailed to the his tree
Said "oh, Daddy-o I can see how it all soon will be
I came to shed a little light on this darkening scene
Instead I fear I spill the blood of my children all around"
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around
So the story goes, so I'm told
The people he knew were
Less than golden hearted
Gamblers and robbers
Drinkers and jokers, all soul searchers
Like you and me
Rumors insisited he soon would be
For his deviations
Taken into custody by the authorities
Less informed than he.
Drinkers and jokers. all soul searchers
Searching for love love love
Love love love
Love love is all around
Preparations were made
For his celebration day
He said "eat this bread and think of it as me
Drink this wine and dream it will be
The blood of our children all around
The blood of our children all around"
The blood of our children all around
Father up above, why in all this anger have you fill
Me up with love
Fill me love love love
Love love love
Love love
And the blood of our children all around

I know you were having trouble trying to get tix to the show up North, so I figured i would offer you a ticket (obviously you would have to pay for it). Now, I know that I was supposed to come up that weekend, but thats why I was thinking about the next weekend (Dec 17) instead. Here is the lineup:

The Killers
Modest Mouse

A 90-year-old man said to his doctor, "I've never felt better. I have an 18-year old bride who is pregnant with my child. What do you think about that?"
The doctor considered his question for a minute and then said, "I have an elderly friend who is a hunter and never misses a season. One day when he was going out in a bit of a hurry, he accidentally picked up his umbrella instead of his gun. When he got to the Creek, he saw a rabbit sitting beside the stream. He raised his umbrella and went, 'bang, bang' and the rabbit fell dead. What do you think of that?"
The 90-year-old said, "I'd say somebody else killed that rabbit."
The doctor replied, "My point exactly."

Yes. My last statement. I was wrongfully convicted of this crime against Michael Watkins and James Williams on 10th Street on August 31, 1993. I got convicted on a false confession because I never admitted to it, but my lawyer did not put this out to the jury. I did not kill those drug dealers. I send love to my family and friends; my east side family and friends. I am being real with the real. That's all that counts in my heart. I will see you later. That's it.
:lol Texas Board of Criminal Justice, last statements, this is a 29 year old hispanic guy who shot a 5 year old hispanic girl in the face while killing 2 other drug dealers. Nice guy.

danCerKween***: Well, I was thinking, Adam...You know how sometimes, when you're lying awake at night, and you think of all the things that matter to you and all the things that don't, and even all of the things you don't think about through the day? I think of you sometimes. You fall into your own category. A good one, yes, my favorite really. But then I thought, Adam doesn't like broccoli...So...What the fuck is up with that, huh? What do you have against broccoli? Broccoli is the foundation of this very society. Without broccoli, we'd all be...We'd be a lot like non-broccoli eating people. What is wrong with you? Anyway, moving on, someone is eating broccoli here on the bus, and it stinks. Ew.

A murder in the silent after-hour halls of the Louvre museum reveals a sinister plot to uncover a secret that has been protected by a clandestine society since the days of Christ. The victim is a high-ranking agent of this ancient society who, in the moments before his death, manages to leave gruesome clues at the scene that only his granddaughter, noted cryptographer Sophie Neveu, and Robert Langdon, a famed symbologist, can untangle. The duo become both suspects and detectives searching for not only Neveu's grandfather's murderer but also the stunning secret of the ages he was charged to protect. Mere steps ahead of the authorities and the deadly competition, the mystery leads Neveu and Langdon on a breathless flight through France, England, and history itself

Sophocles supports the importance of moral convictions further when he portrays multiple characters and various arguments approving morals over law. In the second scene, an elder of the city asks Creon, in regard to the attempted burial rites mysteriously performed on Polyneices' body, "Sire, I've had misgivings from the first; could this be more than purely natural work?" (202). By saying the work is more than purely natural, the elder suggests that even the gods are in favor of disobeying Creon's edict. When Sophocles places the gods on the side of moral convictions during the conflict, he is certainly revealing the more important side of the argument. Even though Creon has mandated a law that he sees to be unquestionable and true, he should still act in obedience to his gods. By answering to the gods before his own official law, Creon should have placed moral convictions in higher importance than official law. From a historical context, in the period this play was written, worshipping and honoring gods played an important role in Greek society. By having the gods argue for moral convictions and against official law, Sophocles proves that the former is still more important than the latter.

MEATY BONUS QUESTION!!! Worth 3 meaty points!
In the train yard, trains are rolled down a long hill in order to link them up with other cars as shown. A car of mass 4000 kg rolls from rest at the top of a frictionless hill 5.0 m high, inclined at an angle of 5.00. What velocity would the car have after it linked up with 3 identical cars sitting on flat ground at the bottom of the track

A READING OF CANTO 5
Lecture Thirty-Five: Paolo and Francesca
NOTE: The sequence of Dante lectures has been slightly revised. Lecture 33 (last Monday) provided an introduction to Dante's poetic career. Lecture 34 (today) will focus on the allegory of desire in the "romance" of Paolo and Francesca in Inferno canto 5. Lecture 35 (Friday) will look at Dante's treatment of the Sodomites in Inferno cantos 15 and 16. And Lecture 36 (Monday) will finish up with a consideration of Dante's sadistic treatment of the Schismatics.
Dante's View of the relation between Augustinian Love Psychology and Fin Amour
Last week we saw how certain medieval authors the writers of Arthurian romance and the writers of erotic allegory strove to reconcile the ethics of fin amour with the religious opposition of cupiditas and caritas
Two solutions to the problem of reconciliation
(1) THE CAMELOT SOLUTION
In the Arthurian tradition, love "worship" was subordinated to religious "worship" but a great knight like Lancelot could still win honour in the eyes of his lady (as well as a kiss from her) by earning honour for his King and his God. It was a socially as well as spiritually precarious balance of "honours" but while the balance held, the worshipful Civilization of Camelot flourished in the world
(2) THE CASTLE OF JEALOUSY SOLUTION
In the Romance of the Rose tradition, cupidity in the form of amorous passion or lust could be reconciled with the higher love associated with God the Creator if the Lover and his Beloved both perceived sexual intercourse as obedience to the natural law of heterosexual procreation. The male lover transforms himself into an erotic pilgrim worshipping at the vaginal "shrine" of the beloved, whose towering defences are burnt down by the celestial power (fiery influences) of the planet Venus.
In canto 5 of the Inferno, Dante explodes the optimism of both these solutions by revealing their shortcomings in the morally disturbing whirlwind of the Lustful. The Camelot "solution" (appeal to social discretion) will prove to be disastrous for the lovers Paolo and Francesca, while the Castle of Jealousy "solution" (appeal to natural law) will be overridden by the higher law of divine taboo which is enforced in the afterlife by the Infernal Judge Minos.
The Whirlwind of canto 5 ("La bufera infernal") literally blows these cultural solutions to the problem of sexual transgression all to Hell, suspending the reader in a state of profound moral disturbance. Can human "Amor" EVER be reconciled with divine "Agape"? Canto 5 presents us with no ethical or theological solutions > sexuality remains deeply at odds with spirituality, and their appalling tension faces us once again in the wake of pathetic human experience.
The Symmetrical Structure of Canto 5
Canto 5 divides up into three sections "orchestrated" by sound-effects
Lines 1-24: Calm before the Storm: The First Confession Scene
dominant sound: the snarling voice of Minos
Lines 25-72: The Storm
dominant sound: the huge cacophany of the "bufera" (shrieks, groans, wails)
Line 73-142: Eye of the Storm: The Second Confession Scene
dominant sound: the pathetic voice of Francesca da Rimini
The First Confession Scene
the action is a parody of the sacrament of confession. Why is it a parody? Because the souls undergoing the ritual are NOT repentant and the "Father-Confessor" is a
demon with no powers to absolve their sin. They are already damned by God. All Minos can do is to send them to their proper ring in Hell. Also, the sinner is FORCED to "confess" all: confessions to be valid must be voluntary
MALE POWER FIGURE: Minos = Father Confessor
his "coda" or tail = a demonic phallus, obscene masculinity
appropriately sexualized figure to introduce the Lustful
appears in "active" male position
|
|
"CONFESSING" SINNER = an unrepentant soul, already damned
placed in passive "feminine" position
when Francesca stood before him, he wrapped his tail around his body twice and sent her to the Second Circle
The holy act of confession becomes a grotesque parody of sexual intercourse: the naked sinner "cast down" or "felled" by the gigantic penis
The Storm
Why punish the lustful in a whirlwind? Why the sound-scape of the storm?
It's a sexual metonymy for orgasm: all the "tempests" of passion, the cries and wails and sighs, are gathered together in the Second Circle as if the orgasmic huffing and puffing of all the great lovers in history have been gathered together in one violent current
The punishment of the Lustful is ironically appropriate: they are caught up in a hyperbolic version of their own heavy breathing!
Their infernal fate is to be STUCK FOREVER at the moment of climax, unable to relax (hence they are depicted as "wearied souls" > they're tired out by the violence of their incessant orgasm. Paolo and Francesca are unable, in fact, to pull themselves apart. Imagine being forever with a sex-partner you despised.
The storm of passion also REDUCES the great lovers of classical and Arthurian history (including Cleopatra, Dido, and Tristan) to mere wispy bird-like shades tossed up and down and hither and yon on the wind
Note also the sadistic eroticism of the orgasmic tempest:
"La bufera infernal, che mai non resta,
mena li spirti con la sua rapina;
voltando e percotendo li molesta"
"The infernal whirlwind, which never rests
drives the spirits before its violence (= rape, "rapina");
turning and striking, it tortures them."
Recall the raping wind-god Zephyr from Ovid's Fasti: only here, ironically, the raping winds do not transform you into the goddess of springtime flowers (an empowered figure) but into a powerless shade, reduced to a "ruina" ( a mere ruin or vestige) of your former self.
The Second Confession Scene
Suddenly, mysteriously, the vast discord of the storm is hushed ("'l vento, come fa, si tace":
"The wind, as now, silences itself": line 91) in order for Dante to hear the voice of a single soul who laments her fate and deviously ties to persuade us that she's not guilty.
Who was she? RECOUNT THE STORY OF FRANCESCA DA RIMINI
an historical personage, known chiefly through Dante's poem
married off to Gianciotto Malatesta around 1275
falls in love with Gianciotto's brother Paolo, who had acted as proxy for her at her Betrothal
Gianciotto discovers them alone together and murders them both in a jealous rage
Dante adds the "romantic" detail that they fell in love (lust) while they were reading a romance "of Lancelot": probably the Galehaut incident because she declares the book and its author a "go-between" (Galeotto). Francesca's shade is furious because her Fin amour passion which she felt revealed her "gentle heart" resulted in her ignoble ruin.
Notice how Francesca sets herself up as noble soul "confessing" not her guilt but her amor to Dante, as if she were trying to seduce him
Father Confessor figure = Dante (assuming the role of Minos)|
Female Sinner > Francesca seems to be assuming the subordinate position
But this parallel with the first confession scene swiftly collapses:
Francesca swoops down towards Dante: she is hovering ABOVE him
she assumes the active male position by appropriating MALE discourse
a) the discourse of the male philosophical tradition "There is no greater pain than to remember the happy time in wretchedness"
Quotation from Augustine's Confessions and Boethius's Consolation of Philosophy
b) the discourse of fin amour
her famous speech on AMOR is a parody of the kind of love writing Dante did in the Vita Nuova
Her chivalric language is also a parody of the poetry in the Romance of the Rose
Notice how she has also reduced her partner Paolo to a blubbering presence on the sidelines: she refers to him contemptuously as "he who will never be separated from me"
Dante-pilgrim is effectively UNMANNED by Francesca. He is perilously persuaded by her seductive speech and is himself overcome with passionate
feelings for her
His final action in the canto is to faint before her:
"e caddi come corpo morto cade" (line 142)
"And I fell as a dead body falls"
Dante-pilgrim is rendered passively "female" by this supine position, his figurative
death renacting an orgasmic faint and recalling Francesca's bitter line
"Amor condusse noi ad una morte" (line 106)
"Love led us to one death"
with its ominous pun on "Amor" and "una morte"
Francesca's own amorous death her liebestod is psychologically transferred to
Dante > notice how aggressive she is in her defiant attack on Dante's sensibilities,
though her "come-on" lines sound initially like the lamentations of a poor victim,
a lady in distress
Francesca's book is blamed for her damnation; but the episode raises a frightening question about Dante's book i.e. the Inferno will it act as a go-between, a Galeotto leading its readers (us!) into deadly sin by bringing us into intimate contact with the Damned?
Dantean allegory was written to be read (interpreted) on four distinct levels of meaning:
Fourfold Reading of Dante's Faint
Literal Level: the fictional "now" of the narrative (concrete details of action, setting, etc)
Dante falls on the ground from an excess of compassionate feeling.
Typological Level: parallels with other narratives
Dante's faint recalls the fall of Adam (Genesis) through Eve's transgression
the fall of Dido (Virgil's Aeneid)
the fall of Augustine into cupidity
the fall of Lancelot and Guinevere
Tropological Level: moral lessons
Dante's faint teaches us (a) that Lust, as a deadly sin, leads to death (simplistic moral) but also (b) that there is a lust for death in the fallen human soul.
In effect, the reverse of Francesca's punning epigram
Una morte condusse noi ad amor
(The prospect of our mortality drives us to love)
Anagogic Level: prophetic glimpse into the afterlife
Dante's faint suggests that Amor on its own leads to an afterlife of perpetual storm (no peace), because the cultural world (represented by books) provokes the
transformation of natural amor into cupidity. Francesca's downward
movement from the storm parodies the descent of divine Agape from Creator to creatures. At the anagogic level a reader must reverse
Dante's and Francesca's falling movements to gain an understanding of the ascent of the charitable soul to the eternal peace of Heaven.
Lecture Thirty-Six: Disco Inferno
Ppt 3: End-of-term party
Sexual Sinners are found on many levels throughout the imaginary space of the Inferno
Near the top > the heterosexual lustful in the storm of the Second Circle
In the middle > the sodomites in the wasteland of the Seventh Circle
Near the bottom > the sowers of discord in the torture chamber of the Eighth Circle
Ppt 4: Passage through the gates of the City of Dis (which "morphs" into Florence)
Today we're going to pass through the gates of the fortified wall that divides Upper Hell from the City of Dis which comprises Lower Hell
A NOTE ON THE CITY OF DIS
Dante uses the word "Dis" (originally a proper name for the Pagan God of the Underworld = Pluto or Hades) as the name for the ruined city of Lower Hell, the fortified walls of which Dante and his guide Virgil enter in canto 9.
The whirlwind of the Lustful in the Second Circle (canto 5) rages around Upper Hell outside the walls of the City of Dis. The Desert of the Sodomites in the Seventh Circle (cantos 15-16) lies inside the walls, as does the ditch of the scandalmongers in the Eighth Circle (canto 28) where Mohammed will appear on Monday.
As an imaginary city, Dis figures in Dante's allegorical design as an utterly ruined and demonically oppressed version of THE CITY OF MAN >opposed to Augustine's City of God
Ppt 5: The City of Dis >Sodom, Troy, Babylon, Alexandria, City of Man etc.
It functions as the hellish realization of all the potential evils in several of the cities we have studied so far. In canto 5, for instance, whatever was depraved about Babylon, Alexandria, and Carthage is projected onto the Infernal Outskirts of Dis by association with the three queens Semiramis, Cleopatra, and Dido.
In cantos 15 and16, the Sodomites figuratively abide in the annihilated ground of the biblical city of Sodom: only here, in Hell, the fire and brimstone falls not just once but forever on the site of urban sexual transgression.
In canto 28, with the figures of Mohammed and Ali, the City of Dis will "morph" again into Mecca: the "unholy city" of the Infidel (from the viewpoint of the Christian Crusaders). When Dante first approaches the fortified borders of Dis, he observes the distant structure of a mosque within the walls (canto 9) an anticipation of his traumatic encounter with Mohammed.
Ppt 6: Inferno 15 > modern depiction of the rain of fire and brimstone
PLOT SUMMARY OF CANTO 15
After Dante and his guide Virgil pass through the walls of the City of Dis, they eventually come to a vast desert. From a distance they observe "troops" or "flocks" of damned souls running about naked on the burning sand.
Ppt 7: Flocks of sodomites running
Flakes of fire & brimstone fall upon the bodies of these souls, whose flesh has been burnt to a crisp ["nuked" > charred shadows of their former selves]. From a distance they look like they're dancing as they hop about on the sand and slap at the fire flakes landing on their skin.
Ppt 8: The river of blood, the stone levee
Dante and Virgil step up onto a raised stone levee, the bank of a canal filled with boiling blood. Stretching across the desert. Using this stone bank as a path, they can move across the desert without getting burnt. As a result they are elevated some distance above the desert floor and must look down at the souls of the Sodomites
As it turns out, the Sodomites are not performing a dance: they're forced to move in this way. If they do not keep moving, they are punished by being forced to lie on the sand for a hundred years > PARODY OF THE DANCE OF AMOR
Dante notices these souls "staring hard" at each other and at him----> homoerotic gaze: i.e. "cruising" (in contemporary gay slang)
one of them reaches up an grabs him by the hem of his robe. Dante bends down to see who it is, and recognizes his old teacher Ser Brunetto Latini
Ppt 9: Brunetto Latini grabs Dante's robe
Brunetto assumes that Dante must be a Sodomite ("Qual Maraviglia!" he exclaims, "What a surprise!). Dante then effectively "outs" Brunetto by naming him
no historical evidence outside the text that Brunetto had sex with men, but that doesn't stop Dante from disclosing his "secret"
Ppt 10; Brunetto Latini (c. 1220-1294)
WHO WAS BRUNETTO LATINI?
an historical figure who looms large on the urban scene in thirteenth-century Florence
was a teacher of rhetoric, the author of encyclopedias or "treasuries" of knowledge (he mentions his work il Tresor in canto 15);
"proto-humanist" > looked back to the classical authors, especially Plato and Cicero, for guidance in the political life of medieval Florence
was Dante's teacher when the poet was in his late teens
these illuminations from Brunettos' writings depict him as a busy author and as a dedicated "magister" or scholar lecturing to his students
Much of canto 15 consists of a very courteous, respectful conversation between the two men, a kind of dialogue reminiscent of the classical (Platonic) tradition between Master and Pupil
it's as if the two were meeting on a Florentine street while Brunetto was still alive: they both try to "ignore" the horrible transformation of the teacher into a charred zombie
they seem to pick up a conversation begun long ago AS IF THEY WERE NOT IN HELL
Dante's respect for Brunetto is intense: he tries to ignore Brunetto's altered appearance & station
Ppt 11 (Italian text) and 12 (Translation)
IMPORTANT PASSAGE expressing this respect (Inferno 15, lines 79-85)
DANTE speaks to Brunetto:
Se fosse tutto pieno il mio dimando," "If my request were all fulfilled, "
Risuos' io lui, "voi non sareste ancora I replied to him, "you would not yet
de l'umana natura posto in bando; be banished from human nature;
ch้ 'n la mente m'่ fitta, e or m'accora for in my memory is fixed, and now it weighs
la cara e buona imagine paterna on me the dear, kind paternal image
di voi quando nel mondo ad ora ad ora of you when, in the world, from time to time
m'insegnavate come l'uom s'etterna..." you taught me how man makes himself eternal."
Ppt 13: Stamping the Paternal Image
the image of Brunetto "stamping" or "fixing" his dear, paternal image on Dante's mind suggests two sexual metonymies : seal stamping image on wax and minting of coins
Ppt 14:Medieval Embryology
in medieval medicine (embryology) these metonymies were used to describe procreative intercourse. Penis = seal Womb = wax
the father's image was stamped on the passive matter in the womb by the active shaping "virtue" (power) in sperm
Ppt 15: Mental Sodomy
These metonymies ironically liken Brunetto's teaching to sexual penetration and procreation: i.e. Dante was "mindfucked."
homophobic fear of sodomitical teachers "corrupting" their impressionable students
----> fear that goes back to the charges laid against Socrates in ancient Athens
A. making the weaker argument seem the stronger
B. leading youths to impiety
a medieval symptom of sodomy was the corruption of language even at a grammatical level
use of feminine endings on masculine nouns or adjectives (calling a king, "rex," a "regina" or queen)
using rhetoric to persuade students to turn away from Christian teachings back towards the teachings of the ancient pagan philosophers (which is what Brunetto did in real life)
Ppt 16: Other sodomites in Inferno 15
This homophobic fear of sodomitical teachers is intensified in canto 15 when Brunetto tells Dante that the other members of his "flock" were "all clerics and great men of letters" including the Roman grammarian Priscian, the royal counselor Francesco d'Accorso, and my favorite, Andrea de' Mozzi, the bishop of Florence whose sodomitical practices were so notorius that he had to be relocated to the smaller city of Vicenza
Brunetto bitchily refers to Andrea's "ill-protended muscles" > probably a reference to his stretched rectal tissue (a consequence of excessive anal intercourse)!
Ppt 17: Was Dante a homophobe?
WAS DANTE A HOMOPHOBE?
an important question to ask as we enter the "Sodom" cantos of the Inferno
Some definitions:
Ppt 18: Homophobia
HOMOPHOBIA = literally "Fear of Same"
= an irrational fear of, or hatred for, same-sex desire, homosexual
people, queer culture.
= a term dating from sociological discourse of the early 1970s
HOMOPHOBE = someone who experiences such a fear or hatred and acts upon it
Ppt. 19: Evidence for the prosecution: Dante must have been a homophobe
(A) biographical (?) he was a medieval Italian Catholic man whose early poetry was primarily devoted to the amorous praise of women; he was married
with several children; he probably was a translator of the Roman de la Rose [heterosexual love presented as "natural" in opposition to "unnatural" lust of the Sodomites]
(B) theological Medieval Catholicism (like the Vatican today) declared sodomy to be a violation of natural law: a "Sin Against Nature" and therefore also
against the Creator who fashioned the lawful order of Nature.
(C) judicial the gruesome punishment suffered by Brunetto and the other Sodomites "reveals" their perverse sterility. Unlike the Sodomites in the Bible,
Dante's Sodomites must suffer the annihilation of their City perpetually
(D) metaphorical the image of Brunetto "stamping" or "fixing" his dear, paternal image on Dante's mind ironically likens his teaching to sexual penetration and procreation: i.e. Dante was "mindfucked." A typical version of Homophobia is the fear that gay teachers will physically molest or morally corrupt the young
Ppt 20: Evidence for the defence: Dante may not have been a homophobe
(A) theological Dante's Catholicism is in many respects unorthodox: that is, it differs idiosyncratically from the official tenets of the Faith. Dante
writes his poem, in part, to correct doctrine and to expand its limits in light of his own prophetic revelations about the Afterlife. The
Sodomites he meets in Hell are unrepentantly violent, which is why they are damned, but high up on the holy mountain of Purgatory (Canto 26) he encounters a group of Sodomites who are repenting their excessive lust and purging their souls so that they can enter into Heaven. In a radically unorthodox move, Dante dares to imagine the salvation of same-sex lovers in the sequel to Inferno > Purgatorio 26.
(B) philosophical Even if Dante accepted orthodox Catholic teachings on sexuality, would that have made him a homophobe according to our definition of
homophobia as an irrational fear?? In light of the moral teachings of Scholastic theology, which were heavily influenced by Aristotelian philosophy, it would be perfectly rational to fear the morally corrupting influences of anyone who violated the procreative law of nature (which underlies God's command to Adam and Eve: "Go forth and multiply").
Ppt 21: Inferno 16: Three Noble Florentines
The psychological evidence suggesting that Dante may not have been a homophobe is provided by the poet himself in the way he treats the Sodomites (very respectfully > he admires them for their learning and civic virtue)
More psychological evidence is provided by his emotional response to the three spodomites he meets in the next canto, Inferno 16
all Florentines: Guido Guerra ("Guy War") > a soldier
Tegghiao Aldobrandi > influential nobleman
Iacopo Rusticucci > lesser noble, married
Ppt 22: The Ring-Dance of Sodomites
These three remind Dante of "oiled champions": macho fighters
They form a ring as they "cruise" him: parody of the carol of lovers in the Romance of the Rose
(C) psychological response to their dance
check out the following verses in canto 16 (lines 46-51):
Ppt 23 -24: Italian text and translation:
S'i' fossi stato dal foco coperto,
Gittato mi sarei tra lor di sotto
E credo che 'l dottor l'avria sofferto;
Ma perch' io mi sarei brusciato e cotto,
Vinse paura la mia buoa voglia
Che di loro abbracciar mi facea ghiotto.
"If I had been protected from the fire, I would have
thrown myself down there among them, and I
believe my teacher would have suffered it [i.e. allowed the fall];
but because I would have burned and cooked
myself, fear vanquished the good will that made me
greedy to embrace them."
Note how Dante is allegorizing both his DESIRE to embrace the Sodomites and his FEAR of the punishment meted out to them. This psychological
conflict suggests a measure of self-consciousness and self-criticism that does not match with the profile of a reflexively prejudiced anti-gay bigot. Dante
seems to be representing here the agonizing impact of official Catholic homophobic doctrine on the soul of an empathetic man whose "good will"
(which ought to lead him towards Augustinian caritas) is actually making him "greedy" (i,e. driven by cupitas) to embrace the transgressive lovers below him
on the desert. His profound respect for Brunetto and his erotic attraction for Jacopo Rusticucci and the other boys in the sand go against any simplistic
reading of the poet as a homophobe. This scene suggests, rather, the psychological condition of a layman whose deeply personal crisis of masculinity cause him to struggle against the homophobic dictates of his religion.
To sum up > We may posit two answers to the question: Was Dante a homophobe?
YES, because Dante imagines an appalling contrapasso for Brunetto and company a punishment that reflects the prevailing Catholic condemnation of those who act on same-sex desire as violators of the Divine Plan.
NO, because Dante explicitly declares his good will towards the Sodomites (canto 16, lines 49-51) and even confesses his desire to "embrace" them on the burning sand. Only fear of the fire prevents him from hurling himself down among them. Thus he self-consciously describes the impact of homophobia on his own soul the repressive process of turning his good will (and homoerotic desire) into self-defensive disidentification.
A reflexively prejudiced or simple homophobe would not have allegorized the process of inclining towards and then turning away from the Sodomites, or have expressed such a complex range of emotions fear, pity, respect, grief, attraction, repulsion when faced with the theologically constructed Homo/Hetero Divide
DANTE'S CRISIS OF MASCULINITY
This week we've been charting Dante's infernal experience of being "unmanned":
In canto 5: he's overcome by pity for Francesca and faints, assuming the passive supine position associated with the female
In canto 15: his mind/womb is "penetrated" by the sodomitical teachings of Brunetto, who fixes his paternal image in his intellectual "offspring"
In canto 28: he comes face to face with the most extreme version of unmanning: the CASTRATION and INVAGINATION of a hyper-masculine figure, the
Prophet Mohommed
Lecture Thirty-Seven: Mohammed's Wound
Ppt 1: Title slide Gustave Dore's engraving of Inferno 28
Ppt 2: Midyear Test announcement
Ppt 3: Dante sees mosque in City of Dis
When Dante first approaches the fortified borders of Dis, he observes the distant structure of a mosque within the walls (canto 9) an anticipation of his traumatic encounter with Mohammed.
Ppt 4: City of Dis "morphs" into Mecca
Ppt 5-7: Diagrams
In canto 28, with the figures of Mohammed and Ali, the City of Dis "morphs" into Mecca: the most holy city in the Muslim world but from the viewpoint of the Christian Crusaders of the Middle Ages the most "unholy city" of the Infidel.
That encounter happens deep down in the Eighth Circle, the section of the Inferno where the souls of deceivers (the Fraudulent) are imprisoned in a descending series of "bolge" or sack-like ditches traversed by stone bridges. The Eighth Circle is known collectively as "Malebolge" which means "Evil Pouches," and the shade of Mohammed is found in the ninth ditch among the Sowers of Discord the "schismatics" who created harmful divisions in society
Ppt 8: Contrapasso
IMPORTANT TERM (found in Inferno 28, line 142)
CONTRAPASSO = literally "counter-suffering" from Latin contrapassum (in medieval Catholic theology) meaning "relatiatory justice": equal suffering repaid for previous bad deed
= Dante uses it more specifically to denote the ironically appropriate punishments meted out to the Damned by the Divine Judge
e.g. the Lustful are eternally "raped" by the winds of the infernal tempest the Sodomites are forced to reenact the Dance of (Heterosexual) Love under the rain of Fire and Brimstone
I'm now going to read aloud the first 42 lines of canto 28, and while I'm doing so, reflect on the ironic appropriateness of the contrapasso meted out to Mohammed
Ppt 9: Gabriel and Mohammed: (parodied in Dante: Demon and Mohammed)
The prophet Mohammed founded Islam in the early seventh century C.E. at Mecca. Ali married Mohammed's daughter, Fatima, but a dispute over Ali's succession to the caliphate led, after his assassination in 661, to a division among Muslims into Sunni and Shi'ite.
Medieval Christians viewed the Muslim world as a schism in Christendom, with Mohammed as both a heretic (preacher of false doctrine) and a schismatic (divider of peoples)
Dante depicts both Mohammed--the founder of Islam--and his cousin and son-in-law Ali as sowers of religious discord.
NOTE: Dante does not condemn Mohammed as a Muslim but as a Christian leader who went bad. Popular medieval view of Mohammed > thought by Christians to be a cardinal whose papal ambitions were thwarted, and who therefore caused a great schism within Christianity when he and his followers splintered off into a new religious community.
Ppt 10: two views of Dante's Mohammed
horrifyingly transgressive portrait of the two holy men in Inferno 28
Mohammed's body split from groin to chin
Ali's face sliced top to bottom (Inf. 28.22-33).
In the Middle Ages, Islam had great influence on European culture in many domains: medicine, philosophy, mathematics, and politics
The crusades of the 12th and 13th centuries still loomed large in Dante's mind in the early 14th century: Christian armies from Europe fought to expel Muslims from "holy land".
Ppt 11: Schismatics circling the Abyss
TRADITIONALLY Mohammed's contrapasso has long been interpreted politically:He split the "body" of Christendom in two and so now his body is
sliced by the demon's sword in the afterlife
His circling of the abyss parodies the circling of pilgrims around the Ka'ba
This political/religious interpretation is not wrong it just doesn't go far enough. I read the strange spectacle of Mohammed's wound from an EROTIC perspective, though it can of course still be read in other ways (e.g. as a political allegory of Schism or Discordant Division in the religio-cultural domain).
What kind of sexual activity is happening in the theatre of cruelty we enter in canto 28? It's a "scene" exemplifying what we would now call "sado-masochism." And because it's a scene of horror at the sexual mutilation of a man, its transgressive violence also has about it a strong element of homoerotic voyeurism.
Ppt 12: Dante's Crisis of Masculinity
DANTE'S CRISIS OF MASCULINITY
In the past few lectures we've been charting Dante's infernal experience of being "unmanned":
In canto 5: he's overcome by pity for Francesca and faints, assuming the passive supine position associated with the female
In canto 15: his mind/womb is "penetrated" by the sodomitical teachings of Brunetto, who fixes his paternal image in his intellectual "offspring"
In canto 28: he comes face to face with the most extreme version of unmanning: the CASTRATION and INVAGINATION of a hyper-masculine figure, the Prophet Mohommed
Ppt 13: The Vaginal Man (medieval illumination of Inferno 28)
Mohammed isn't simply cut up from chin to anus by the cruel sword of the attendant devil. He is transformed into a VAGINAL MAN through the incision that effectively bisects/ruins his penis and opens up a cavity to be "penetrated" by the erotic gaze of Dante-pilgrim.
Intriguingly, Dante presents Mohammed as self-mutilating as well as mutilated.
When the Prophet steps forward, he dramatically wrenches open the "lips" of his wound so that his guts spill out. This contrapasso can be read as a hideous parody of BIRTH. It is also a grotesquely physical anticipation of another male birth the "spilling out" of the poem from Dante's mind/womb which in turn takes us back to the original myth of male birth, the splitting of Zeus's thigh to bring the infant Dionysus into the world.
Ppt 14: More Vaginal Men
For the past few lectures we've been considering the role of eyesight in the construction of an intense psychological bond between Dante-pilgrim and the sexual damned.
(A) Francesca touched upon this theme when she described her attraction to Paolo
as they were reading the Galehaut episode in the Lancelot
("Many times that reading drove our eyes together and turned our faces pale":
Inferno 5: 130-131)
(B) The first troop of Sodomites "cruise" each other and then direct their cruising eye
at the pilgrim: ("Each was gazing at us as in the evening people gaze at one
another under the new moon"; "Looked over in this way by such a company...";
"I penetrated with my eye his baked appearance": Inferno 15: 22-26)
(C) The second troop of Sodomites keep their faces (and presumably their eyes) always
turned towards the pilgrim as they wheel in their infernal parody of the circular
Carol of Love; and Dante stares fixedly at them ("This man, in whose steps you
see me tread"...: Inferno 16: 34)
This kind of INTENSE STARING or LEERING is known in contemporary sexuality studies as
THE MALE (EROTIC) GAZE
The male erotic gaze generally signals not only the strong (and often strongly repressed) attraction of the viewer to the visual object, which tends to be the "objectified" body of the person desired; but also implies a power relation between them, with the gazer asserting his gender-based moral, spiritual, or even political superiority over what is being observed.
Ppt 15: The Male Gaze
GAZING AT MOHAMMED'S WOUND
Canto 28 in the Circle of Fraud opens with just such an act of gazing:
"Who could ever, even with unbound words, tell in full of the blood and
wounds that I now saw...
Surely a barrel, losing centrepiece or half-moon, is not so broken as one
I saw torn open from the chin to the farting-place.
Between his legs dangled his intestines; the "pluck" (heart, lungs, and other
organs above the diaphragm) was visible, and the wretched bag that
makes shit of what is swallowed.
While I was all absorbed in the sight of him, he, gazing back at me,
with his hands opened up his breast, saying: "Now see how I spread myself!
See how Mohammed is torn open!" (Inferno 28: 1-31)
Notice how here, as in canto 15 and 16, the gaze is mutual. Dante pilgrim fixes his gaze on Mohammed while Mohammed stares right back at him as if their eyes were creating a kind of hypnotically erotic mind-link. What Dante sees is not only horrifying: it is "obscene" in the literal sense that it brings what's normally hidden inside suddenly outside and "shows it off" in a startling, even nauseating way as if it were a theatrical presentation.
Ppt 16: Fourfold Reading of Mohammed's Wound
TRADITIONAL FOUR-FOLD READING OF THE MEANING OF MOHAMMED'S WOUND
1. The Literal Level (= the concrete scenes or incidents that happen in the story)
A Devil with a sword penetrates Mohammed; the Prophet walks around the ring; as he's walking, his wound heals; when he returns to the Devil,
the incision is opened up again. The cycle of wounding and healing recommences. Dante's intrusion into this cycle breaks the usual round
of torments, and Mohammed's gesture of opening his wound up to spill his guts is a unique "show" put on for Dante's benefit.
2. The Typological Level (= what this scene recalls, i.e. similar scenes or characters or events in other stories)
Mohammed's gesture recalls the obscene disembowelment of the traitor Judas in the Bible (Acts 1: 18):
"Now this man purchased a field with the reward of his iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his
bowels gushed out." But where God seems to have punished Judas with disembowelment
as the reward for his iniquity, Mohammed literally does it to himself thereby proudly usurping God's role as Judge.
3. The Tropological Level (= what moral lessons are taught by the story)
Mohammed is not damned as a Muslim Infidel but as a Christian schismatic who sowed discord in the world and split up
the body of the Church. Hence, in the contrapasso, his body is split up to warn believers against the painful evils of schism. "What God
has joined let no man pull asunder."
4. Anagogic Level (= what the scene suggests about the eternal life of the Saved or the Damned)
In contrast to the painful self-inflicted divisions among the Damned,
the Blessed souls or Saints will enjoy the perpetual unity and concord
of everlasting life in Paradise without pain or anxiety.
Ppt 17: Dante's Doubles
UNORTHODOX (EROTIC) READING OF MOHAMMED'S WOUND
The traditional "fourfold" reading of Mohammed's wound is perfectly reasonable, but it somehow fails to explain the erotic gazing that goes on between Dante-pilgrim and Mohammed. If we were to read the scene at a sexual level in other words, if we were to look at it through the pilgrim's transfixed erotic gaze what would it reveal to us?
<<< An irrational "invagination">>>>
Dante beholds an irrational self-image a nightmarish reflection of himself
as "The Vaginal Man". The split and castrated body of Mohammed functions
as a sexual sign of the complete "unmanning" of Dante himself, a process we
have been following in several stages since his encounter with Francesca

A frustrated wife decided her sex life needed spicing up. After work, she went shopping and picked up a pair of crotchless panties. She went home and donned the new garment and selected a short skirt to go with it. She greeted her husband when he came home from work and sat across from him as they had a drink. She slowly spread her legs. She says, "Honey would you like some of this?"
"Hell no, look what it's done to your underwear!"
