View Full Version : Why is the South so conservative?

SatelliteEyes

If you live in...Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Virginia, or Arkansas I ask you, why are those states so conservative.

My guess is it has to do with a combonation of Guns, homophobia and the Bible. But I may be wrong. If you live there give me a shout out as to why your state is always Red and it is always a no-brainer that it is Red.

no kidding.

I could turn that around and ask why all the "blue" states are so liberal?

Gary
10-18-2004, 11:34 PM
Do you apply the same logic to all of these red states?

Certainly the people of montana love their guns and hate gays too?

I dont know about other people but for me, are my values. they are centered around the bible. i guess it all comes down to values for me. Why are northernes so liberal?

Two words: Bible belt. But yes, at least for Texas, this state is extremely conservative. There's not much you can do if you're a progressive living in the heart of Texas. It's not extremely bad though. What pisses me off are these campaign commericals for Congress down here. It's between D-Chet Edwards and R-Arlene Wohlgemuth. Chet's served for 14 years, seven straight terms. Anyways, I swear Arlene's campaign is based solely on the fact that Chet's a "liberal democrat." All of her commercials are playing to this damn conservative audience and all she's saying is "he's a liberal democrat." No facts. Nothing. Same can be said about the district attorney race between an incumbent dem and challenging rep. It's ridiculous.

Great Point. But I kinda find it shitty when Chet Edwards says "Hi Im Chet Edwards Class of Blah Blah" Hes playing that thing off too much in my opinion

Im a republican.... and I would vote for Chet Edwards right now. The guy seems a lot different than the "typical democrat" and a lot more reasonable, and Wohlgemuth seems like a bitch to put it short.

eric_dmbfan03
10-19-2004, 12:27 AM
Like two of his eight or so commercials have that. His campaign's been having to make commercials refuting Arlene's lies. But his ads have always had "Texas A&M Class Of '74" in it, since I can remember.

TN is not as conservative as most places. we have a democrat as a mayor, weve had alot of democratic senators, mainly named gore but thats not the point. a few days ago, the polls had Tn witha 4 point difference, but the next day it was back to 20+. but yeah.

Denial of what..?What we say about the south is true and a fact and for anyone that wants to say different either knows nothing about the south or is in the south in denial. I have spent plenty of time in all those southern states mentioned, and I am not saying its wrong but I can not say that the ways of the south do not exist.

clemson357

I'm bigoted because I've lived in the South long enough to know that most of the stereotypes about Southerners generally pan out? Ok.

there are many stereotypes about many races that generally pan out. that is where stereotypes come from, but it doesn't make the broader idea of stereotyping any more valid.

want another stereotype that generally pans out? People on welfare generally tend to be black. And Black people generally tend to have the most illegitimate babies. Now, a bigot takes those things, turns them into a stereotype, and uses them as justification for the way he sees all black people.

that is the same thing you are doing, just against a different type of person.

but thats ok, just keep telling yourself you are right. Your stereotyping is very justified, and very different from when other people stereotype
