Raiders have 1 gameplan. get the ball to mcfadden. either pass it or run with him. ya, pats gave up 300+ yards to campbell..they didnt look good, especially without mayo and haynesworth, but i believe the gameplan was to shut down mcfadden

The game plan was clearly to shut down McFadden. Not saying the Defense looks good by any means but the passing stats are inflated because of this. 19 pts is what I look at. I'll take that every game from this defense. I don't care how it happens. This team won't lose many games if they just need to score 21 points to win.

agreed.

teams are going to have an inflated passing attack when they're down by 2-3 scores constantly. they're not gonna be running the ball 30+ times a game if brady is taking the ball in for a quick score at the other end

Vince Wilfork will have his third career pick. Maybe a pick-6. And Ellis will without a doubt be the one to hit Sanchez as he throws, 2 seconds after the snap. Our offensive line is in total disarray and our OC doesn't know how to do anything other than run up the dick... right at Vince Wilfork.

So me saying you're going to win by taking advantage of our makeshift o-line is making an excuse? If you hang 40 offensive points on us then yes it's an excuse. But if it goes like last night and everything results from pressure on Sanchez, then it's god's honest truth. And I really think that's the way it's going to go. We aren't a good team right now.

Eh, it's pretty bad man. And this has nothing to do with the Jets so there isn't a need to bring them up. For a few consecutive years now the Pats have had serious trouble with big physical receivers. Marshall in week 1, Jackson in week 2, Stevie Johnson week 3 and Heyward-Bey this past week. It's been a common theme for at least two seasons now. It always seems like the opposing team's tallest guy goes for over 100 yards. And just speaking for this season because I've watched all 4 games, all those yards did NOT come in garbage time playing catchup. Tack on the fact that the d-line is old and slow and poor safety play (not as much this year now that Merriweather is gone) and it's really not a good defense at all.

I DO think the LB play has improved though. That still doesn't stop the air attack.

that's exactly what me and ricky are talking about. the game plan was to shut down mcfadden... pats did that. it allowed other guys to step up and make some plays, but that resulted in 19 points for them and a double digit win for us. i'll take that every week

Was the plan to have Jason Campbell throw the ball directly to his choice of any three Patriots in the endzone too? Come on. I get it McFadden was held to 75 yards... that doesn't make your defense any better. If you didn't have the offense to compliment it, this team wouldn't be half as good as it is. Really, it doesn't matter, because you DO have the offense, but the point is YES this defense is pretty bad.

what else do you want us to say? both ricky and i have said it, the defense is not what we want it to be. i think you're smart enough to know that while they get the system down, bill belichick is a good enough defensive mind to have his team shut down down the number one threat on the opposing team...they've done that.

i'm confident that belichick will build this defense up pretty well this season. luckily the pats have the best qb in the game putting up great numbers while the D finds it's way

But aren't Marshall, Vincent Jackson and Fred Jackson the other teams' number one threat that you've played this year? They all had pretty damn good outtings against the Pats. I just think you're getting "defensive gameplanning" confused with "dominant offense". And again, there's nothing with that when you can pull it off like you guys do.

rickyh24
10-03-2011, 05:23 PM
The secondary is not that good. But it is good enough to get by especially against QB's like Sanchez, Campbell and Romo. They will get their yards but they will inevitably make mistakes. There are only a few QB's in this league that can beat you themselves and luckily one is done for the year and another is on this team. The other one this team doesn't have to worry about unless they get to the SB and meet up with him there.

I'm fine with the rest of the D. I think they will be fine. Hopefully the Secondary gets better it is still very young.

Not for nothing, that secondary has played Sanchez 5 times in his career and lost 3 times. He isn't lighting them up, but I don't really know how you can make that comment when he's only been chewed up by the secondary two times in his five attempts.

Neither is this years, though. Wilhite, Sanders, Page, Big Bang Clock, Butler are all gone. Bodden didn't play last year. The Jets have been better than we give them credit for, but I think they're just not talented enough this year to make any significant noise in the AFC.

How can you even say that when Brady plays to the last minute of game 16 when they already won their divison and are winning by 48 points?..Lets not forget how many times the Colts sacrificed a perfect season by not playing the starters including Manning.

2007 I don't remember Brady coming out in all those blowout games or any games for that matter

if Manning played the last game of the season in which he broke the single season TD record..Brady probably wouldn't hold the record now.

I think that total defense/redzone defense can be explained. When you're by a couple scores in the second half, you want to make other teams put drives together and burn clock. It becomes a number of possessions thing in the second half when you're up by a couple scores. If you minimize the other teams possessions...they cant score enough to win.

So allow the opposition to pick up 10-15 yard chunks until they get into the redzone where there is less field to cover, and you can play more aggressivly. Corners can play up, safeties can jump routes without the fear of someone getting behind them. Anyway, I think this is BB's current defensive philosophy with the personnel he has.

Edit: This thought process also jives with the release of brandon meriweather: a talented player who took too many risks and gave up too many big plays

yeah, i think this secondary needs ALOT of work, but i think a lot of people are failing to realize that these teams are racking up the yards because they're down by 2+ scores. they need to throw the ball all the time

They definitely need work and its frustrating to watch teams march down the field with 15 yard gains, but if they dont score (#1 redzone defense), the strategy is working
