they'll be fine. he's not a real running back, so you won't see him run the ball all that much. he'll be back there plenty though.

why are callers on weei saying we should sign cedric benson? :lol makes absolutely no sense. thsi is the 3rd person to mention it. they would've just brought back benny if they needed a guy like benson.

more than benny. he's rushed for 3 straight 1000 yard seasons. pats wouldnt look twice at him because of his fumble issues and off field issues.

i say a team gives his 3yr/18mil. he'll be 30 next season though. we'll see

this would def rattle jets fans, but it think this is the beginning of the end of the Rex Ryan era in NY. we'll never ever see the jets as complete and ready to win as they were with that great defense a couple years ago. a true superbowl caliber QB was what stood in their way of winning.

they should really hold on to on their pics and build on the defense. if week 1 started this sunday their defense is worse then it was last year. Still no real replacement for Anderson and who knows if Carter will be healthy. On offense I would just roll with what they have, didn't they lead the NFL in scoring or at least close to it? Not much has changed on offense between adding like 5 WRs so they are still going to run the table offense wise...

dmbredsox36
03-28-2012, 08:24 AM
As much as I'd love them to have an elite RB, I'm hopeful Vereen and Ridley can provide that combo at a much cheaper price. I think the Pats could do even more damage with a potent rushing game and pass catching RB's in this offense. Is the offseason over yet? :lol

I do hope they invest their draft picks on defense. It won't surprise me if BB goes OL with their first pick, trades the next one and then loads up on D.

So which WR's are making the team?

I figure they'll carry 6, counting Slater.

So the locks:

Welker
Lloyd
Branch
Slater

That leaves two spots for Edelman/Ocho/Gonzalez/Stallworth/Rookies

I really don't understand the signing off all those WR's, they probably need to draft a WR to get a little younger at the position, so you figure that takes one of the roster spots. Unless someone gets a fake injury and is stashed on the PUP list or something...three of edelman/ocho/gonzalez/stallworth are most likely not making the team

My guess is Welker, Lloyd, Branch, Slater, Edelman, Rookie....but then...why restructure ocho, and sign gonzalez/stallworth?? IT DONT MAKE NO SENSE

I hate the Patriots more than anyone in the universe but I don't understand this comment. The schedule is not made by a selection committee or something, it is based on your division and what place you finished in the previous year.

I second the stubhub suggestion as well as Craigslist. A lot of people, towards the end of the season, won't go to games, especially if it's a lock that the Pats have the division or not.

And as a Pats fan living in Baltimore, I feel your pain.

Side note: Why is Bruschi saying how much worse off the Pats are with BJGE gone on offense and having zero confidence in Vereen/Ridley. Did I miss something or what? BJGE would get you 3 yards a carry, no long runs, no out of the backfield catches, no real threat. So he didn't fumble and could find the end zone on occasion from short distances. I'll take 2 explosive backs who will actually pose a threat to defenses any day of the week.

Thanks. I didn't help her find the tickets last year (and it was the Giants game) so I'm not sure where she found them, but I'd like to have a couple searching options for something reasonable. The seats were fairly good, but I'd be willing to move up if it meant saving some money.

And as a Pats fan living in Baltimore, I feel your pain.

It's awful. As the season gets closer I'll start comparing the Bills/Jets/Pats schedules to see if I even have a chance to watch the Pats games. But even that; obviously no turnovers are a huge plus, but if the trade off is that the offense is much more dynamic and you have that home run threat at the expense of a few fumbles, why not? It's not like the elite RBs in the league don't fumble from time to time.

Besides, with McDaniels back, the offense will be scoring enough to afford a fumble once in awhile. :cool

i do agree, just saying that when you have a passing offense as dynamic as the pats, an exclusive running back isn't needed as much as a guy who can get the tough yards, move the chains, and keep the ball so brady can dictate who scores.

Yeah I understand about their offense as it is. I'm hoping they get a little more two dimensional so it's not all on Brady's arm. Even a fair/decent running game will keep defenses honest and open things up even more for Brady and company. I'm really looking forward to seeing what the RBs have.

Not that the Light news is suprising, but offensive line appears to be a big need that no one is talking about. I could see them taking a guy like Cordy Glenn G/T at #27 (if he's still around). Either way, I think BB is drafting an O-Lineman early this year.

dduncan6er

I think they go O-line in the first round too. And I think this may actually be the year where they use both 1st rounders. I think they'll end up trading one or both of the 2nd rounders though.

Wouldn't be suprised. If I had to bet though, I'd say they trade that second 1st down to the middle of the second and pick up a 4th/5th and a pick in 2013.

Not picking after the 4th doesn't seem very BB-esque to me, and we know how he likes to leverage current picks to picks in the following year.

Another thing worth noting is Vollmer wasn't that great last year. They'll need more out of him. I think Solder will take a big step forward this year. In the 3rd round I think we'll see them grab a Guard or Center as well.

abbotter88
04-19-2012, 10:16 AM
With Waters back the situation on the o-line is a little better.

RT: Vollmer/Cannon
RG: Waters
C: Connolly
LG: Mankins
LT: Solder

Mankins might not be ready for the start of the season, in that scenario, looks like Gallery or Cannon would play LG

If Waters retires the situation gets a little more dicey, and a first round G/T is almost a must. No mankins for the start of the year means you open up with Gallery and Connolly as starting guards with Koppen at center, coming off a terrible injury. Vollmer can't stay healthy either.

Hightower and Grant were definitely worked out...not sure about Addai. They both left without deals, that's the last I heard.

I'd love to see Grant or Hightower. A veteran prescence would be great for the young guys in the backfield, and provide another option for between the tackles/ goaline running.

Looking forward to the draft tomorrow; hopefully the reviews/reading I've done on some of the candidates won't be completely wasted. :lol

As for Wes, I absolutely love him as a player and hope this is just tough guy talk and that he shows up over the summer for camp. He's 31 years old, smaller in size and blew out his knee a little over 2 years ago. If he wants 10m/year for 3-4 years, he better watch out for two other slot receivers who BB could plug into the system. (Obviously this is a bit exaggerated, but you get my point)

I say try to get it around 7-8 million over 3 years with whatever guaranteed and call it a day. Brady's contract is up then too right?

Your point is valid. As much as I hate to admit it who was Wes Welker before Tom Brady and Bill?

Exactly, and that's my biggest thing with this whole deal. I'm a shorter/smaller sized guy and I love Wes for what he's done and the way he plays. He brings it every play. But at the same time, as much as I hate to say it, he's been hugely helped by the Pats system and how it's run. Not to take anything away from him, but I'd be willing to bet that Brady could have similar (not exact) results with another slot receiver like Edelman or Gonzalez, if he could actually stay on the field, and they'd be just as dangerous.

Wes is using this hold out as his leverage, but the Pats have leverage themselves. If I was him, I'd take that reported 2 year/10 mil deal and call it a day, or just ask to up the guaranteed money.

But the CBS report is just a rehash of the globe report right? That's my only issue. I'm fine with the move if they can get a solid replacement for the 2010 McCourty. Otherwise I'd give him a full offseason to get back to form and see what happens. Granted, maybe they had to make some early decisions because of the draft.

Wouldn't he need to pack on pounds during the offseason to play safety? Meaning, if they are doing it, they would have already commited to it and it's a done deal. They're not going to either A) have him stay at CB weight and then move him after he reports to camp, because he'd be at such size disadvantage in the box or B) ask him to gain the weight then move him back at the opening of camp, forcing him to lose weight quickly.

Meaning, if he's moving, it's already been decided and won't be up in the air at the outset of camp.

Oh, I disagree completely, on both points. 193 is not getting it done for a safety. Sure tackling is great but a safety is in the box much more often than a CB ever is. A guy who has had upper body injuries on the edge wants no part of a guard, fullback, or RB in the box at 193.

mallet wasn't impressive enough and didnt get enough time so there's no way they could get anything for him. hoyer would be the best bet to trade away. i like hoyer a lot and like duncan said, i hope he gets a chance to play somewhere because he wont here.

i like the new era baseball hats, i just dont like how they are all around $30 and you can get a bad one every once and a while that doesnt fit correctly.

when you first buy them they need to be broken in a little. my new sox hat took about 3-4 days of normal wear for it to break in

Have to go pick by pick here:

C. Jones - B+ - Addresses a need, good background, worth trading up for.
D. Hightower - A - Always love Bama players and was really excited when we got this guy.
T. Wilson - D- - Only thing preventing it from being an F is that he plays defense.
J. Brequette - B+ - SEC pass rusher that I've heard of. Good in my book.
N. Ebner - B - Classic BB pick. Used to play rugby, probably pretty versatile (in a good way, not in a "he sucks so we'll call him versatile" way).
A. Dennard - B+ - A secondary player who was well-rated. Pretty solid late pick.
J. Ebert - B- - Can't really praise or criticize this one.

Exactly this. I don't care how good he ends up being, they could've made a better pick in round 2 and still gotten him later in the 7th or even as an UDFA. It's like BB needed to make a big FU statement to everyone after he actually made a popular move in the first round. It was an ego move 100%.

Overall, I'm happy with the draft. Looking forward to camp reports and seeing how the picks progress.

That's fine if it's a round or two early, but we're talking a 7th round pick or not even drafted. To me, they could've addressed some other need with a talented 2nd round pick and still got Wilson later. It has nothing to do with the player, it's just where he was taken that frustrates me. That's all. Like I said, to me this is just an ego move by BB.

most Patriots fans don't understand that logic they just assume in Bill We Trust

I don't agree BB selected him because he didn't think he would be around in later picks. you probably could have picked this kid up after the draft. The difference between Vollmer and this kid was Vollmer was ranked in the top 200 at least, something this kid was not.

Another odd pick is the Rugby kid I think he played something like 2-3 snaps on defense last season another pick that is going to get lost on special teams.

And Dennard surprised they picked a guy that got kicked out of a bowl game for fighting and punched a cop less than a week ago, what if he is convicted? Its one thing to draft a guy that has got in trouble for weed..but punching a cop a week before the draft?

Believe me if the Jets drafted this kid, Pats fans would be all over Rex

I agree with the first part about where they picked him, that's my only real issue with it. It seemed there was plenty of talent still readily available at that spot in the 2nd and obviously there was no rush on Wilson.

I like that they signed some UDFA OL's, I think that'll be help throughout the season and next. I'm sure they did they homework on Dennard, though I was surprised about the very recent issues. Pretty dumb to get into that kind of situation a week before your NFL future is decided. You gotta figure that the Patriot Way will straighten him out or he'll be gone before the end of camp. Another low risk/high reward selection.
