Former Patriots safety Rodney Harrison took his former teammate Tom Brady to task on national television on Sunday night. During halftime of the Football Night in America telecast on NBC, Harrison told Brady to "take off the skirt and put on some slacks. Toughen up." Harrison was referring to the pointing Brady did after Terrell Suggs hit his right knee in the second quarter of Sunday's game. Suggs was flagged for roughing the quarterback and the Patriots went in for a subsequent touchdown.
I said the same thing after that play. Brady jumping up and down and pointing like a little girl that just got kicked in the shins. He is such a puss.
they might be 3-1 but they look and play like a 1-3 team

The NFL's problem is that they have legislated intent out of officiating. I think the only judgement call left is running into the kicker/punter/holder penalties.
There is a difference between getting your hands up to block a pass, and hitting a QB in the head. There is a difference between diving low at a QB, and stumbling towards him. You don't want to see guys get hurt, but you also don't want to see guys not give their all to get after the QB or not give their all to seperate a WR from the ball.
Brady has taken plenty of hits. The hit that Sanchez took was stupid. If he has any brains he won't take a hit like that again.
pathetic

Cutler almost got killed yesterday. The KO on Trent Green was the ultimate "Get Down" moment.
I would guess half of my screaming during a Steeler game is either "Get Down" or "Throw It Away". Your team isn't going anywhere with your star QB on the sideline because he needed to prove how tough he was.

Brady used to pop right back up after every big hit, and he used to take a lot of them, but now he's slower and slower everytime :lol makes me cringe because you're right...most of the elite teams in the NFL lose their QB and their focus is on next season...unless your the pats, then you end up going 11-5 and miss the playoffs ::lorraine

If we were able to hear what the announcers were saying we probably wouldn't have been as concerned, but with no information and just watching him barely move around, it was more than a little disconcerting. Then he didn't even give the "thumbs up" when he eventually got off the field. That didn't help us. I am glad that he's okay.

Im going to preface this with letting everyone know that Im a Ravens fan, but I dont think the Pats were the better team. I think they're very good, but they needed an inexcusable drop on fourth down to win that game. Now the Ravens still needed to score, but they would have been on the 8-yard line with 29 seconds left. Odds were pretty good that they punch that in.
I dont think the officiating was as bad as everyone is making out to be, particularly on the spots. McGahee was short. It wasnt close. The Ngata and Suggs personal fouls were atrocious however. You have got to do a better job than that as an NFL official.

It was a horseshit call. That stumble into the QBs legs did not affect the play in the slightest. If that was Derek Anderson under center the punting unit comes on the field. He looked at the ref and he threw the flag.
Officials need to do a better job, and Goodell needs to bring some common sense into the game. Its partly the officials, but when the commissioner says before the season that refs need to overenforce certain calls, what are you going to do? Jobs are on the line. The refs need to throw flags even if they dont think they should.
This "point of emphasis" nonsense needs to stop. Protect the QB, but protect him sensibly.

Interesting:
Both penalties extended Patriots drives that resulted in touchdowns, and an emotional Ray Lewis (http://www.baltimoresun.com/topic/sports/football/ray-lewis-PESPT008514.topic) argued after the contest that the NFL (http://www.baltimoresun.com/topic/sports/football/nfl-ORSPT000007.topic)'s attempt to protect quarterbacks is diminishing the sport.
"That's embarrassing to our game," Lewis said, adding that Brady even acknowledged to Johnson that New England got a "cheap" call. "Fine me, do whatever you please, I'm not speaking against anybody. It's embarrassing for them to treat one person on a football field different from anybody else. That's what's embarrassing about this game. You cannot do that. You've got to let the game take care of itself like it just did. But when you call penalties like that, it takes away from the love of the game because you can get a Tom Brady to walk by you and say something like, 'Oh, that's a cheap one.' Wow."

what odds say that the ravens wouldve punched it in? they were trailing most of the game...
yes, it was a horseshit call, but deal with it. it happens all the time in all sports. what the ref saw was suggs going low on the QB. if brady doesnt jump over him then it couldve been ugly.
i agree, the refs need to do a much better job, but calls like this happen in every football game. pats still had to march down the rest of the field and score a TD. it's not like the play set us up 1st and goal

The rule says something like you cannot make contact withthe QB below the knees after the ball is released. Suggs did that. End of story.
It might be a stupid rule and a "cheap" penalty on the Ravens, but according to the NFL rules for the 2009 season the right call was made.

Dude, a 15 yard roughing the passer call doesn't make you lose games. being the shittier team that week does.
Also, Baltimore had that win with that last catch. Flacco put it right in the numbers. THAT, if anything, is the reason Baltimore lost. Not beacuse of some shitty call against Suggs.
Edit: in addition, in case you haven't noticed, there are tons of random "shitty" rules to protect the QB now a days. I saw a guy get a roughing the passer call for putting his hands up and tapped manning on the head when his hands came down. Shitty? yeah. Does it say you can't do that? Yeah. Deal.
You can't hit a QB at the knees or below once the ball is released. Suggs did that. Therefore, it was a penalty. Not sure what all your commentators don't get about it or all your experts. But, according to the way the rules are, it was the correct call.

The rule itself is a pansy rule and it needs to go, everyone agrees with that. However, I see no reason at all why a player wouldn't take complete advantage of rule that's in place. It's stupid to think otherwise.

i dont agree with the call. i think it's put the pats in a great position. but look at it from the refs point of view. he's watching everything in between the lineman and qb...he sees suggs go low (which is dumb and he shouldve known he cant go low) and throws the flag. pretty textbook...and if brady doesnt jump over him then we might be looking at another bradyless season

what odds say that the ravens wouldve punched it in? they were trailing most of the game...
yes, it was a horseshit call, but deal with it. it happens all the time in all sports. what the ref saw was suggs going low on the QB. if brady doesnt jump over him then it couldve been ugly.
i agree, the refs need to do a much better job, but calls like this happen in every football game. pats still had to march down the rest of the field and score a TD. it's not like the play set us up 1st and goal
1. They just marched 80 yards in two minutes. They were moving the ball. They would have had first and goal from the eight with 30 seconds left. The Pats defense was gassed. Anyone that isnt a Pats fan would say, and has, that the odds were strongly in favor of the Ravens scoring there.
2. It didnt set up first and goal, but the Pats would have had to punt. And it happened twice. That's a big deal.
To me, the Ngata penalty was the more egregious call.
I'd like to see them start flagging guys for asking for flags.
Yup.

And this is the problem. Its more the rules committee than the officials, but fans sorta lump them all together and a criticism of the refs.
As I said before, the NFL tells these refs what's going to be a "point of emphasis," and the refs have to act accordingly. They get graded by the NFL, and those with the best grades get to work the playoffs and Super Bowl. Their jobs and financial future are on the line. Even if they dont think a play warrants a play, theyre mindful of what's being stressed and act accordingly. This is an NFL problem, not an official-on-the-field problem.

There is a huge difference betwwen bad officiating and bad rules. The NFL has legislated almost all the gray area out of the rule book over the last few seasons, which can be a good and bad thing. Once we, and more importantly the players, get used to the rules, the bitching will stop. It was not too long ago that every illegal contact penalty was a huge deal, but now it is just part of the game.

I know I'm late as heck with this reply, but I'd say the odds were pretty good, considering Flacco moved them all the way to the 14 without much trouble.
As far as the hits to Brady go, Suggs' penalty was indeed questionable.
I still gotta say though, as a Ravens fan, although they did lose, I'm excited with this team and their chances, seeing as how in their first real test of the season against the Pats, they fought all the way to the last second (or well, last 32 seconds).

Not to sound like the "typical" New England fan, but I agree with this. The Jets really have no good offensive weapons, and like you said, I think the "won" that game against NE because Wes wasn't in there.
If the Pats of yesterday showed up against the Jets in week 2, the Jets would have been killed. Not like they won 31-9. It was by a touchdown.

the suggs play is questionable, but he did exactly what the rule said you cant do. hit high or low on the QB...tough call
I see why the flag was thrown, but it was obvious that Suggs was "assisted" if you will with reaching Brady's knees. It's not like he went in by himself and aimed for Tom's knees. The thing I have the problem with is that yes, he was flagged for it, but the ref's didn't even notice him pushed in Brady's direction (by yes, a Patriot). Not only that, but Tom didn't even have to flop to make the penalty. He just jumped up and pointed at Suggs.
I think the penalty needs to be readdressed. If a player goes at him on his own free will, flag him, but if he's pushed or has any interaction with a blocker/lineman that leads him to the QB's knees, it should be ruled incidental contact, much like incidental interference on passes.

yes, it's incredibly dumb, but look what happens when you hit the QB high...hhe gets a concussion. when you hit him low, he tears his acl...this is just one of the rules in football where they need to protect the QB, but they are doing a little bit of overprotecting the QB

It's just the evolution of the game.
Doesnt mean it isnt asinine. You brush the QBs face, its 15 yards. You run into his legs, its 15 yards. You hit him a nanosecond after the ball is thrown, its 15 yards.
I understand the QB is unprotected (except for that giant line who, you know, protects him) but its evolved into absurdity. If anyone should be protected its wideouts.
Use judgment. Determine intent. This has nothing to do with yesterday's game, it just highlighted an issue that's ruined the NFL for years now. The league wanted more scoring to draw in more fans so they enacted rules that promoted offense--illegal contact, emphasizing PI, penalties for hitting defenseless receivers, fines for tough hits. And it worked.
There hasnt been a single rule change in a decade that has benefitted a defender, but plenty for the offense.
Either dial back the flags or shorten the penalties. Make it five yards and a first down, or 10 yards but no automatic first. Too many times QBs fall down on third-and-27 and draw a flag. Its ridiculous.

It is a tough call. I think intent needs to be a part of what happens in officiating, but you cannot consistently interpret intent every game, which would be a far larger issue than guys getting used to the new rules.
The defense has gotten a few rule changes to benefit them over the last decade.

You can't interpret intent, but reviewing how the player reached the QB would help. If they watch the replay (or perhaps the line judge could assist) and they could decide whether it was intentional or not.

Well, it's not like we're seeing flags come out 7-10 times a game. Yesterday's for example, there were only two instances on where a flag was even thrown. It'd be pretty much identical to how they handle the pass intereference calls. Flag is tossed, refs congregate, then an intentional/incidental decision is assessed. I'm not 100% sure on how many refs are on the field, but I'd think the line judge could say how the player got there (since again, it's likely a blocker on the line that would initiate the contact with defender) and the backfield judge (assuming there is one) could say, yeah, he hit the knees. This is how Suggs' play could have gone:
Play is run, flag comes out. Ref's come together. Ref one says Suggs hit Brady's knee. Ref two says "Patriot number so and so caused him to stumble into Tom." Ref one says "okay, we'll rule it incidental". Done

The only guy who should be watching the QB is the "Referee"
You get conferences on the passing penalties because multiple factors go into the call. Was the ball tipped? D id the QB break the pocket? Was the ball in the air when contact was made? Was the ball catchable? etc.

I still think there should be more to it on these plays, since the penalty is so outrageous.
It is what it is for now I guess...
I look forward to a potential rematch with the Pats though, seeing as how the chances they meet again are pretty good.

It's never that simple. No two people see an event the same way, you'll have multiple opinions to talk it out, it would slow the game unnecessarily.

it's strange for sure. i think he's good physically, but mentally he's not right. his timing seems to be off and i think that might be him getting rid of the ball a little too quickly because he's scared to get hit. he's not stepping into throws the way he used to when the pocket starts collapsing. hopefully for you guys, he gets over it.

Nothing that happen so far this season has anything to do with Manning being better than Brady.

Jr. has been picked up by the Pats. I am not sure this move is going to have much influence on the field but I think it will help some of the younger LBs learn the game.

How many times is he going to have to come out of retirement? :lol Wish we kept Vrabel around, he could have filled that leadership role nicely. Mayo and Guyton look promising to me.

I don't think we can take anything away from this game really, that defense was atrocious.
