I just want to get a taste as to how people's parents and how they were raised influence how you vote today. I am trying to post this as a poll but since I have never done this before it may not work so....

Anyway, for example, I was raised in a household where both of my parents are very much conservative republicans. My younger brother is also a republican. However, I am a liberal democrat. So...how far do you fall from your parents tree??

i align pretty closely. my mom is a LOT more liberal than any of the rest of her family. dad came from britain and grew up in the 40's and 50's, so it's a different story for him politically, but he's definitely liberal, despite his age.

Both of my parents are Repubs but I'm registered Independent. They're voting for Bush because he cuts their taxes but I don't get tax cuts with my income so I could care less. I would have voted for Bush had I been old enough at the time but I feel he's failed to be worthy of my vote this time around so I'm voting for Kerry.

I don't support any political party, and this will be only the second time I have been old enough to vote, so I don't really have a usual party.

My dad is hard core republican and my mom votes for who she likes regardless of party.

'92 my dad voted bush sr. dont know what my mom did. i have no idea what either of them did in '96. dad was dead in '00 no idea what mom did. '04 my mom is going kerry (fuck her conscience). i would align myself with the getting back to the consittution and less gov't in our lives but obivsouly i need to/am going kerry here but i would not call myself a democrat.

My mother and step-dad are registered republicans. My mother is most likely going to vote for Kerry but doesn’t talk politics. I have not asked my step-dad but he is a state trooper and I think he is for Bush, I think.

More of my family is on my father’s side. My father and uncle bother served in Vietnam. My father was in the navy and my uncle did uncover work all around the word. This side of my family is mainly republican and I think it is because of them being affluent.

I have been an independent but now I am a democrat. My one friend is the chairman of a democratic committee; my other friend is a democratic councilman, my other friend was an intern for a democratic commissioner, and another friend is running for a democratic state rep. position. A lot of my other friends are very active on mainly the democrat side.

I still will debate them on things so I don’t feel they had any significant influence on my decisions.

My parents are split and I hold most of my dad's views. I love giving my mom a hard time about how their votes don't cancel each other out any more.

My mom and stepdad are very conservative and my dad really just doesnt care and I am somewhat of a liberal. So i dont reallu have the same views as my parent. My sister, though, has the same views as my mom and stepdad. Family political discussions are very interesting

"If you're 20 and not a Democrat, you don't have a heart. If you're 40 and not a Republican, you don't have a brain." -- Sir Winston Churchill

Since this was a parents/children political thread, I thought I'd throw in a favorite quote of mine.

BTW, I'm an Independent. What don't I have??? :)

Parents both Democrats, I have voted Republican every time I've voted.

but surely he used the words "liberal" and "conservative" ... no? the reason i ask is because republican and democrat have never meant the same thing in britain. i've heard the quote before and i can't remember what he specifically said.

You are correct, sir!

I was trying to type it from memory...shows how good my memory is.

Here's the correct quote:

"To be conservative at 20 is heartless and to be a liberal at 60 is plain idiocy."

No. I chose the right path and am a Republican

"Dont be an 'Ass'. Vote for Bush!" I love the quote

mom's a conservative democrat, rest of my family does not vote, claiming it does not make a difference, and I am an independent.

My dad always voted Republican, and my mom goes back and forth. I know she is voting for Bush tomorrow, and same as 2000. I have mostly voted Democrat. Gore in 2000, and Kerry tomorrow. Also, Barack Obama for Democratic Senator from Illinois. But I have voted for some Republican canidates before.
