I was looking at a tab today and noticed it wanted me to do a vibrato on an open string. How would I go about doing this?

you could always play it 5th fret on the string below. Unless you're vibrato'ing the low E, in which case that wouldn't work.

Where the strings meet the tuners right off the neck... If it is comfortable, then push down on the strings and it should wah some
Sorry that I am so bland with my description

thanks for the help. It's on the D string so I just did it 5th fret on the G string. It sounds pretty good.

players often bend the neck.
(no joke)
it works well with harmonics.

Don't try this at home without proper supervision, kids. I've seen some acoustics turn into firewood real quick while trying this stuff.
But you're right, it does work well with harmonics. :thumbsup
press down and do the vibrato on the part coming out of the tuning peg on the headstock (not over the fretboard). As said earlier ti works real well with harmonics (Dazed and Confused, For What It's Worth)

Don't press too hard on that part of the string. I've broken a few doing that because you have so much leverage it's really easy. So be careful.

I believe thats the technique used on Iron Man (Black Sabbath). the opening bend on the Low E is done pushing the bit of string thats off the fretboard. Good song to practive that technique on, if you're into Sabbath.

To clarify, the lower strings will be ok to bend like that, but the higher strings will be very easy to break doing that, so be weary.

tim reynolds does this often, if you want him he sort of puts his one hand on the body and sort of bends the neck.

why not just use a whammy bar?

... on an acoustic? not quite.

whats a whammy bar?

that bar on an electric guitar. you push it/pull and it bends the strings. (It doesn't really bend the strings, just tilts the bridge)

whammy pedal. :)
in other news...i have yet to learn how to do a harmonic very good...mine always just sound muted or like i just hit the string regularly.

whammy pedal. :)
at first I was taken back by the idea that one exists, but then i thought to myself, of course one would exist. But ive always thought electronicaly altering the pitch, even if its just at a half-step bending level, doesnt sound the same.

it doesn't. i use mine for mainly spacey stuff...and some ambient jamming. also has a dive bomb effect, detune shallow or deep (very watery sounding), and harmony on it. worth the 200 bucks.

for an electric, or for ambient jamming as you said, that would probably be pretty cool.
I honestly dont understand why they cant make multi-effects units with each indevidual effect sounding as good as its stomp box equivilent.

that's true. what's the exact model etc. I'm interested in this thing. (not to buy, just to feed curiosity)

they do. they just make individual effects for greater profit. allthoooough, you could argue that it's convenient to have a certain effect right there, seperate from all the rest. but i mean the difference between the individual unit and the effect boxes is minimal.
check out the digitech rp line.

Pat M, it's a Whammy IV pedal by Digitech.
I'm not a big fan of multi-effects stuff. I'd rather have a real whatever-it-is than a big board. Also, I'm in the process of building a specific sound...and you can't get that w/effects board.
