Working on a budget novice recording studio for my computer :D So far, I've ordered a B1 Studioprojects all-purpose mic and an Audiophile 2496 soundcard, both to the great help of other forums and friends. Now, I'm on to the mixing board. What I had inmind was a Behringer UB802 8 input- it's $50, great price, and it seems from reviews that it's a good buy for the price and quality. Phantom power for mics and 2 working preamps built in for them to go through. Zzounds entry is here: http://www.zzounds.com/item--BEHUB802
Any experiences or tips to share? I'd also like to know how exactly I should go about wiring this to the soundcard

I've got the now-retired Behringer MX802a. I paid ~$100 a few years ago for it, and I've never looked back. I LOVE it... very easy to use, noiseless and flexible. Mine has 4 XLR inputs though, and I've used more than two only once. It just depends on your personal needs.
As far as going into the soundcard, just grab a good quality RCA to 1/8" adapter from Radio Shack (don't use the thin one that comes with alot of CD players and other peripherals) and run it from the Tape Outs on the mixer to the Line In on the soundcard. (Hint: for recording two separate tracks simultaneously, pan one of the inputs hard Left and the other hard Right, and you can manipulate them individually).

what do you need a mixing board for? what type of music do you record. how many inputs do you have? i personally use a presonus fire pod it has 10 inputs so even the biggest job, like drums, has ample inputs

I'd just use it for solo stuff.. a beginning recording setup, guitar, vocals, electric bass... other stuff with the mic. Don't know if I'd need more than an 8-input, but I'll check prices. The Behringer seems great for my purposes, but I'm not entirely sure. The connection to the soundcard should work with an RCA to left/right 1/4 inch cables, connect the main output on the mixing board to the RCA inputs on the soundcard.

1/4"?

No. 1/8". The Main Outs are for Amp / Speakers. You want to use the Tape Outs for soundcard recording.

Doubtful I'd be recording whole set save for just sketchy stuff only using one mic. I'm leaning towards a Yamaha with 4 mic inputs and 12 others instead of 2 and 8, but it's $100 :/ thankfully, I have some store credit at Samash. Seems like it'll do me better in the long run. We'll see.

In my opinion, if you only see yourself recording one instrument at a time....well...u only have one microphone now but later on...then I would say just get a nice, cheaper preamp like the Studio Projects VTB-1 which runs at about $200 CDN. It'll make your mic sound wayyyy better than that Behringer can.
