I'd say a Squire, they're pretty awesome. I think the P's are cheaper than the Jazz ones

I just bought a yamaha RBX170 at guitar center for 159.00. Its a pretty decent bass for the money. I also bought a fender rumble 25 bass amp which seems to do the job fine. Im a guitar player so i thought it would be fun to take on the bass. I also looked at the ibanez GSR200 which is a little more expensive at 199.00 and it also sounded good and had a decent factory setup. Check out www.harmonycentral.com and read some user reviews.

If you are serious about making bass guitar a long-term endeavor and not some two month fling and you have the $200, save about $180 more and get yourself a Fender Standard Precision Bass...you'll be able to find one for just under $400 probably. Given, it isn't the American Series, but it should last you longer and sound better than a Squire.
