...In defense of ECW, the promotion, the workers, the era...

Well, after reading this comment last night I decided to write up a little piece in defense of ECW and my open favoritsm towards its former workers. This isn't just directed toward Kittens, but all fans in general. I realize I am biased toward workers from this era, but I feel it's for good reason. I read a TON of complaints in this thread. From TNA to WWE, most fans don't seem entirely happy with the products they see on TV or order on PPV.

Literally on a daily basis fans are complaining about the product they get from the WWE and TNA. That wasn't the case during ECW reign in the 90's. The fans truly anticipated and enjoyed almost everything ECW had to offer. From it's diverse talent, to it's innovative stories, ECW never left us unfulfilled or disgusted like TNA and WWE do over a decade later. With a fraction of the budget I might add...

ECW was build around the fans. They were like another worker. They were encouraged to voice thier opinions during matches, bring signs, and chants whatever they felt like. In essense that is what professional wrestling is all about, entertaining and engaging the fans. Today we routinely watch the WWE and TNA ignore critisms. Wrestlers who aren't even popular are given airtime and title belts. Fans signs are throw away constantly. ECW didn't work that way.

For instance, I recently had a discussion about the merits of RVD in this thread. RVD held the ECW TV title for over 2 years. He didn't retain just because Heyman wanted him to. He retained the title so long because ECW listened to it's fans. RVD was consistently drawing a standing ovation, night in and night out, from PPVS to house shows. He earned his title reign and the fans fully supported his time with the belt. Just go back and watch his matches with Jerry Lynn, over a year into his reign fans would routinely boo Lynn. Not becuase Lynn was a heel or a bad worker, but because RVD was just that popular. In fact, he only lost the belt because he broke his leg. Not because the fans grew tired of him. So when somebody who religiously watches a program directed toward children proclaims RVD can't work and isn't that good, I feel an obligation to defend one of the most popular and talented workers of the 90's.

The same logic applies to the Dudley Boys. I realize in 2011 these guys are boring but they were one of the best tag teams going during the 90's. They weren't main eventing PPVs because they were dating the bosses daughter, they were in the main event because they were over. The crowds loved thier matches and promos. So when you guys laugh at them in 2011, I remember when they were tearing down the house in front of some of the most fickle and rabid fans in the history of professional wrestling. Look at the Road Warriors they were awesome during 80's and slowly faded away toward the end of the 90's. No matter what they did toward the end, you can't over look the fact they took wrestling by storm in the 80's.

The same can't be said for the products many of you watch. I never sat and whined about ECW, because they always put the fans first. I never ordered an ECW and felt ripped off. Today smarks look back and write ECW off as violence and a flash in the pan. It wasn't. It was wrestling at it's best.

Some of you think I'm just a blantant ECW homer. Which in some respects I am. But, I don't sit here argue the merits of J.T. Smith or Mustafa. I defend some of the best workers in wrestling history. They weren't the best because Vince Mcmahon created them or TNA bought them. They were the great because they sold out arenas based on great matches and passion. Many of you sit and complain about a show that is geared towards children. I don't and I can't. The WWE isn't for many of us. Some goes for TNA. I've watched so many different promotions over the years I don't feel the need to continually subject myself to a product that openly isn't geared towards me (WWE) or it totally out of touch (TNA).

I fondly remember an era when the fans mattered. I remember an era when I could buy a ticket to a live show or PPV and KNOW that the company I am supporting will make sure I get my $25-50 worth. Today that isn't the case. Whether you like ECW or not you can't take away the fact that they changed the business. They didn't shut down because they weren't popular. Today I watch wrestling fans nitpick a product meant for 9 year olds. I don't fault the WWE for making money. I fault grown men for watching and complaning abou a TV show directed towards pre-teens.

So before you write off workers from the era, remember that many of these ECW workers are around because they appealled to actual professional wreslting fans. When the WWF was dressing people up like clowns and garbage men, ECW was appealing to an adult ticket buying demographic. These guys are around today based on the fact they were some of the best and most popular workers from that era. Eventually another pheonix will rise from the ashes and change the business. Until then, I can only do my best to remind my peers of an era in which fans were truly enjoying the product on TV and on PPV. Today that seems like a crazy concept, but I remember when waiting up until 2am to watch ECW was always worth it. Unlike today when watching an Impact or Raw is more often than not a waste of time.

chris jericho has said a few times now that he thinks his angle with shawn michaels three years ago was one of the best ever. all i specifically recall is the moments where jericho threw hbk through the JERITRON 5000 and busted up hbk's wife's face. i'm pretty sure jericho "won" the feud at the end, too. other than that, i don't recall anything being particularly special about it other than it being two of the best going at it. obviously i watch regularly, so did i miss something about this feud that jericho thinks so highly of? i guess i'm just more surprised that he keeps referencing it as great and that i have a hard time recalling what even happened.

A TNA commercial during Raw?
Yes...I heard about TNA putting up billboards in Stamford, Ct which is the world HQ of WWE. Thoughts? A complete waste of money unless obscure mentions such as this one is what TNA is looking for. Silly expenditure of money IMO. One would think that organization would have bigger and more important fish to fry. However, what TNA does isn't any of my business or concern but the question was asked and has now been addressed. I would guess that many WWE, Stamford based employees learned of TNA for the first time via the local billboards.

Well, this week should be a telling sign of the rebranding's outlook. If Hogan and EB kick off the show with a typical promo, rebranding is bs. The in-ring quality might not improve and the talent might not get any better, but fixing poor decision making would be a large upgrade for that company. We'll see this Thursday.

Seriously, that IMPACT I watched last week was once of the WORST shows I've ever witnessed. I mean, I was stunned with how bad TNA actually is.

I tried to keep an open mind. But, that was terrible. I would imagine the PPV was a laughing stock. The problem is TNA thinks that just because they are packed for a free show in an amusment park that they are drawing fans.

This weeks not only looks just as bad, but it might even be WORSE than last weeks. I know I can't spoil it. But, hot fucking dog, is that the crappiest line-up I've ever witnessed. They have sooooo much talent. Yet that is the show they put on? They are fucking dead in the water.

They thought it was the coolest thing and they were running around like little school girls.
