Drive In Drive Out is challenge for me. Probably a few others I can't think of, but nothing seems amazingly difficult when I play it.

I don't know his most difficult, I'm not a drummer... But my friend loves playing Two Step, and when Carter goes insane on the drums at the end of Tripping Billies, looks very challenging. my friend can play them very well though

I think out of all the songs, Fool to Think is probably the toughest. It is in a crazy time signature and Carter does some weird stuff on it. I really like that song because Carter sounds so relaxed in that song.

i'd think it would be the songs where he has to hold back..tripping billies, dido, halloween--all that is natural for him at this point.

I always thought for some reason that Kit Kat Jam and You Never Know were tough songs. Such funky time signatures on those two.

i think i remember an interview with the boys . it wa son AOL i believe but it was liek a chat room type deal, only oppen to a few lucky members. Anyway, i read this interview and if i remember correctly, someone asked Carter what song was the most difficult for him to play, and i think he replied with What You Are, saying "theres alot going on in that song" or something to that effect. If anyone has that interview to post up here to prove my memory correct or incorrect that would be great. but in MY opinion his hardfest song would have to be Fool To Think, there is jsut so much stuff happening at once in that damn song, i cant get it down to this day, and probably never will.

I would be very surprised if it were What You Are - that's one song where he almost sounds like a normal rock and roll 4/4 drummer.

I would say Fool to Think or You Never Know ... but then those are the ones that are hard for ME...who knows what is hard for Carter

Definitley Fool To Think, Sleep To Dream Her, You Never Know, and Kit Kat Jam. The time signatures are all real funky in that one. But the thing is, Carter makes it sound so natural.

Not a drummer, but I would think Rhyme and Reason wouldn't be your typical hot cup of tea

I think I recal the interview and him mentioning WYA as being one of his tougher ones as well

He also said how awesome everyday was and how they were all treated as musicians...only to bash the bands (or Dave's) decision to work with Ballard less than a year later.

Yeah....I don't think Carter has too much trouble playing anything, but if I had to pick it would be Fool To Think. Or Say Goodbye...not because its that difficult but the fact that he changes from "hotrods" to regular sticks while he is still playing (near the end of the song). Ever seen him do that?...its really quite incredible...and he doesnt miss a beat...obviously!

Listen to The Dreaming Tree from 7.25.98, the stuff he does towards the end is the most difficult thing i've ever heard Carter play.

I could have sworn he asked what songs are difficult for Carter to play.

Yeah but that has nothing to do with him playing the song. I also remember reading about What You Are. He does crazy triplets on the hi-hat throughout the whole song practically. But then again there are other songs that pose time signature difficulties that could be equally challenging.

This song takes a ton of chops. Most set players would struggle with playing the hi hat pattern well unless they had a background in punk or marching band or something like that.

I believe they can play many of DMB's songs on the drums, but I find it hard to believe they can play them like Carter! ;-) (no offence)

I remember reading that somewhere, but I have no knowledge about playing the drums, so I digress.

What You Are has a lot of diddle rolls/opening and closing hi-hat patterns on each beat during the chorus. hard to explain, but i understand why it would be hard for him.

I've always thought what you are would be hard.
First of all, the way that he does the volume swell in the beginning may not be incredibly difficult, but its not easy.
More obviously, the chorus is sick. Listen to Folsom, youll understand why he might find it difficult.

Upon another listen I definately agree that WYA would probably be the hardest!!
That volume swell is produced by the wonderful people in DMBs sound crew. A simple raising and lowering of Carters volume on his hi-hat mics.

when I first saw this thread WYA came to mind immediately, he has some nice work there.

I'd say he gets quite the workout in Help Myself, Drive in Drive Out, Fool to Think, You Never Know, and maybe Rapunzel(played at album speed), but that's probably just me ha.

That HH part isnt that hard.
And he's said its WYA - end of thread. :)

I remember him saying WYA in that interview also, for some reason I remember him saying something about the way he had to move his back that if he didn't play What You Are for a long time it would be hard for him to go back and play it as well, because it was hard to get use to.
