I haven't let anyone else listen to this yet... I just learned it. But after playing it a lot lately, I've realized that this might be a good song for me. Maybe I'm just numb to my own "offkeyness", but I'm feeling good about this one. I didn't cringe at how bad I sounded too many times on this one :rolleyes

Anyhow, here's the link to Daughters by me:

And here's a Satellite I did a while ago for comparison:

You seriously think its "good stuff"??? I don't think anyone's ever said something so positive to me in my life!!! (except for relatives and friends who are just trying to be nice)

I don't even know why I reply to these "Dude, play guitar to get laid" comments anymore. I guess I should accept the fact that that's the whole reason I started playing, but as I learned the instrument and was able to do more and more shit with my guitar, I got away from that. Getting laid just comes with the territory now. I'm a damn hippocrit.

Didn't say dude, dude.

I've been playing for about 9 years now, not because it gets me laid sometimes, but because there isnt a better feeling in the world than playing music.

I agree with that :thumbsup

So what do you think about my cover of Daughters? I know it's not perfect. Like I obviously missed a bunch of notes, but for the most part do you think I was on? And do you think I should be embarrassed about playing this in front of friends? Obviously, playing Satellite or Crash, I'm embarassed because I know its absolutely horrible.

I for one think it's a great cover. The only advice I'd give, and I'm in the same boat, is to be more confident with your voice, work on projecting better. Bob Dylan once said, "It don't matter what you sound like, just sing with all your heart, give it all you got, and set your soul free." Great finish...great voice, and some good guitar in there. Damn, I feel like I should be on American "Idle" (I hate that show).

As for playing it in front of friends, if it's just guy friends, I'd have to say ixnay on that. It just kills a vibe and will have people questioning. Unless someone requests it, then it's obligatory I suppose. But that's not critiquing your cover, just the song "Daughters" in general. Your cover is fine.

Wow, thats amazing. I can't tell you how good this feels. I never got a comment on the internet that was even half positive. I guess I'm making progress. I agree I need to sing out more... I don't know, something like that. Thanks again for the help!

Anyone else have any more comments? I'd love to hear some more honest criticism!

i'm gonna have to say that getting laid is definetely one of the best perks of playing the guitar and singing...but there's nothin better than playin for a crowded audience

I am going to agree with defcon. your voice sounds a lil shaky/unconfident. might be just because you are recording it (same thing happens to me when i spin records) couple parts sound like your rush while others sound like your behind, so i would say timing would be the best thing to work on. Defcon gave some awesome advice in regards to that (dylan quote). regardless it sounds pretty good for no post-production. best of luck :)

your voice sounds way better in this than satellite. maybe this song is just more in your range...but it sounds really good to me.

Dude, wasn't that Daughters, a song that Dave covered a couple of times, but I am not sure who wrote it?

No seriously. I liked it. Echoing what some others have said, it sounds like you aren't committed enough to the vocal. It is a very vulnerable spot. You know everyone is listening. So you have to approach it, I think, with the thought in mind that the only one that has to like it is you, and if everyone (anyone?) else does, then great.

I don't mean that to sound snobby or elitist at all. To the contrary, if you have the courage to invest the effort in it and risk looking foolish or sounding bad, you probably won't because you will break that barrier of fear and vulnerability that holds you down.

We all love Dave. Look how committed he is on the CP DVD during Stay or DDTW. He looks downright odd when he is singing. But his oblivion is makes his voice come alive. I think if you practiced doing the same thing you would enjoy it more and be comfortable and consequently sound fuller and more confident.

Nice guitar playing. You definetly have ability. Good luck with it.

I wasn't sure what you were saying until about the last paragraph there, but I see what you mean. I sing with all my heart all the time, but it sounds terrible. Like my #41 covers are horrendous, but I have the most fun playing that song because I put all my emotion into the song. Maybe once I get better, I can start putting more emotion into singing the songs.

I might try recording another cover of Daughters just to see how it sounds when I actually sing out.
