is it just me or is carter using about 1% of his talent. it sounds like all of the instruments were scarambled in some kind of hip hop sound board....sounds kinda computery(if thats even a word)...anyway....i wonder how much road play these songs will have...if they get alot im expecting them to get about 100 times better....
no, Carter is using 100% of his talent....if he used any less, that would mean he was going at it half assed. This is a different sounnd for the band, and each member individually. This won't sound much like anything we've heard them do before...which for me, after 40 live shows off the all the same material, is going to be a breath of fresh air. I hoping these new songs get a LOT of road play....at least half the set list every night. It'll be great to hear like a DDTW intro, followed by Everybody Wake Up-->Out of My Hands, then out of now where is So Much To Say--->Too Much, then a little Smooth Rider, and Louisiana Bayou, then a random If I Had it All, Grey Street, Lover Lay Down--> Dream Girl...
do u see the possibilities!

I've been very optimistic about the album so far, but I think that Dreamgirl clip was absolutely horrible.

Your talking as if you've heard the full songs already. I admit I liked the clips from the other day but you have no way of knowing if the full songs are going to be any good. Nobody's even heard a clip of Lousiana Bayou and your talking about it like it is a classic.

I'm not saying I don't like Dreamgirl or American Baby, but I think out of all the other clips and Hello Again and Joy Ride, they are the weakest out of the bunch. And they are the first two singles. Makes you think...

That's what I thought it sounded like too, it just didn't make a lot of sense to me. Oh well this song isn't bad. It isn't going to be my favorite but I like it. Everyone needs to remember you can't have 11 Ants, Billies, and Nancies on a CD. If this song had been on UTTAD and you heard Pay For What You Get or Satellite now you'd probably rip them too.

when I hear the beginning of this clip, I hear this TV show theme song...
The Courtship of Eddie's Father ("Best Friend" by Harry Nilsson)
People let me tell you 'bout my best friend,
He's a warm hearted person who'll love me till the end.
People let me tell you bout my best friend,
He's a one boy cuddly toy, my up, my down, my pride and joy.
People let me tell you 'bout him he's so much fun
Whether we're talkin' man to man or whether we're talking son to son.
Cause he's my best friend.
Yes he's my best friend.
(scat finish).
...and I don't think that's a good thing.

04-15-2005, 04:55 PM
It's a great clip, I think - especially for grabbing a random fourty seconds. It fades out right as the song is changing, unfortunately.
Like the guy said above, take a second and think... new DMB album, you go to Warehouse and listen to Satellite for the first time.. and not the whole song (through which you could see how pretty a song it is), but just a random 40 seconds.. say the first verse. "Less than impressive" would certainly be my first opinion.
carterpeart
04-15-2005, 04:58 PM
The last 10 sec. of the clip makes me think this song could go somewhere. All we get is pretty much the chorus. The end of the clip as it fades has some great potential, which I think might be a verse.....listen to what Carter is doing with the "marching" type drum fills....it could be a winner, we will see

Seems like a really mellow way to start an album since it's track 1. Songs like SMTS,IDI,BOWA really got you going. I am sure it sounds good in its entirerity, but sounds like a slow way to start the album.

Yeah I agree - i feel like DMB has taken a step back in their musical progression to go from These Crowded Streets to Busted Stuff(the good stuff) and now to the two newer albums (Everyday and Stand Up) It just seems like something is out of place. I know a lot of them commented on how all the members have had more input in writing the songs now. Maybe they should go back to the old way where one member (Dave) wrote all the songs? Anyone feel the same?

Dave will never write lyrics as he did as on BTCS..You have to remember most of the songs on the albums prior to Everyday were written in the 90s...Dave was young...he liked to party it up...He is 30 and matured a great deal..Its tough to write a song like "Say Goodbye" when you are married and have kids..

I haven't heard any of the clips except Joyride, which I thought was weak. American Baby is slightly above average. My hope in the bands studio work has been fading ever since I heard ED and LWS (strong) after hearing BS (weak). Many of you don't like the clips and I now fear what I've had a strong feeling about for a few years now. DMB's best studio days are behind them. They're listening to outside sources trying to get them to adapt their sound to sell more albums. Plus Dave's voice is getting worse over time.
The best studio days are behind them. Sad but I fear true. Thank goodness for the tours.

Dave would be flattered.. :lol He's actually 38. :p That may have been a typo, but it was still amusing to me.
It seems most likely to be "drunk" to me too. It's definitely not "dream." After all, this is what maloo posted on ufck about dreamgirl after the Stowe Listening Party last weekend:
The lyrics are Dave at his bashful yet horny best. They may seem a little cheesy at times but on the second go-round I paid more attention to his delivery and it's very child-like and honest so even when he's saying "dream girl" in the chorus, you buy it. Talks about drinking and making love after a deep sleep in which he's dreaming of his "dreamgirl".

Just listened to it. I don't particularly care for, but it is just a clip and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't have a chance to at least grow on me.
It seems like Dave's lyrics are more spoken word than even sung now. What's up with that? Is it just me or does it seem like he's constantly talking through his songs?

eh, I think it's ok at best. I think if we were listening to that same song, but being sung by anyone else, it would be really bad, his vocals are the only think making it for me right now.

Just listened to it. I don't particularly care for, but it is just a clip and I'd be lying if I said it doesn't have a chance to at least grow on me.
It seems like Dave's lyrics are more spoken word than even sung now. What's up with that? Is it just me or does it seem like he's constantly talking through his songs?
that is exactly what i have been noticing and wondering about. it seems as if hes not really singing it, more just talking. but with my luck right after the fade he'll start belting out some lines and make my post here wrong.

I like the music more than the words or vocals right now... it's simple, but I feel like the music could lift me and sweep me away, especially live in concert with good lighting cues. ;)
I'm not going to be quick to bash this one just yet.
This album feels alot more like Some Devil did... not only the music style, but trying to anticipate full songs based on 40 second clips.
For what it's worth, a number of those clips were not very appealing, but some of these full songs turned out great. Anyone remember how the clicking in the Stay or Leave clip caused the biggest uproar? Yet it's one of my favorite tracks on the album.
Just sharing some of my perspective...

i remember hearing the clips from Everyday and thinking "eh, that'll be better when i hear it in my car on the day of release".
and it wasn't.
On another note, someone here mentioned wanting to see "if i had it all" this summer...why? Did you not hear it enough over the last 4 years? I am SICK of that song, totally drab, totally uninspired, eck....the only thing i ever want to hear again off of ED is "everyday" and "fool to think***".
I'm noticing a disturbing trend with the dmb...they tease new material over the summer then scrap it in exchange for sub par material on a studio release. THEN, they tease you by putting a reminder in said subpar studio material of the songs you REALLY wanted to hear in its place.
Example: WTWE: "oh grace is....oh grace" (what'd he say! Grace is gone? THATS what i wanted!)
and now Dreamgirl: "after a good good dream" (huuuuh? Good good TIME?! Daaave...)
***only because of the sax breakdown, love that part.

Sounding off just cause I'm bored and watched a sh***y movie. I think thi slabum has a very mellow feel so far. I've only heard AB and DG. I wouldn't mind mellow, but I was hoping for more. I am a fan of U2 and they went through there dance music phase starting with Achtung-Pop. Maybe this is DMB's experimental phase. Which means we have one more experimental album to go. That's ok, you need that every once in awhile to find your direction. I just hope the yfinally find it. My opinion is therefore, wait and see. Neither song has made me get up and say "YES this is it!" But neither has made me want to sell all my DMB to the used cd store either.
BTW - where did everybody get all the other clips? Are they still out there?? Can I get them so I can hear them?

...This is a different sounnd for the band, and each member individually. This won't sound much like anything we've heard them do before...which for me, after 40 live shows off the all the same material, is going to be a breath of fresh air. I hoping these new songs get a LOT of road play....at least half the set list every night. ...
do u see the possibilities!
(I havn't read through the thread..) but this struck me, in a good way, b/c until just now i forgot about all the complaints during the summer about how Everything was Exactly the same and then how the fans wanted dmb to break away from the same "dmb formula" that can be applied to every song. Remember that? and this made it all come rushing back to me.
looks like dmb answered our prayers.. be careful what you wish for? we'll see.
so had a listen to the clip, im the type that needs to hear it through to determine what i think of it -gotta know the whole story. take stay or leave, u gave me the end by itself? id shove it out a 10 story building, whole song? it makes sense, it fits, i like it. the mood change and what not, yeeea, thats what i like =) so dream girl, too much is missing, i do like the timing, but i think its a bit layered, but eh -thats studio
blah blah blah... yeaaaaaaaa, we are in pathetic need to hear this cd.

what i get form these clips is damn....new stuff...creative...more upbeat and listenable than busted stuff...hmmm...it wont be their ebst but they will never top their first three albums...or wait if we listen to the album a few times...maybe it's really good?

There's no question... it's in the background, but it is absolutely Dave wailing. Granted, it's likely that he won't be doing the background wailing live... (the wailing starts in the beginning of the chorus and continues through the breakdown at the end of the clip)

That would be 'joke.' Anyhow, we can't judge this album or songs until we hear all of the song. Its like eating a Big Mac, if you only eat the bun it sucks. Myslef, well I like Dream Girl and Stand Up so far, but like I said, I could hate them in the end. I think we all need to relax, then come May 11th we can love it or hate it.
Amen! We've heard about 4 minutes of music from this album (some of us), and folks are already bitchin. I respect everyones opinion and could understand the dissappointment if the album flops, but I'm not taking any stock until I've heard it all.
I'm just happy my favorite band is still rockin after about 15 years and still has the desire to make new music and tour every summer. Things could be a lot worse.
Oh, and i like what I've heard from Dreamgirl so far, love the potential at the end of the clip!

Anyone feel the same?

well poppy refers to "popular"...and DMB certainly isn't popular, as in mainstream popular. These songs certainly won't put them there either.

The last 10 sec. of the clip makes me think this song could go somewhere. All we get is pretty much the chorus. The end of the clip as it fades has some great potential, which I think might be a verse.....listen to what Carter is doing with the "marching" type drum fills....it could be a winner, we will see

Honestly, for me my favorite tour year was 2001. So much new material made for great concerts, and with fewer classics mixed in at just the right spots it was great. Since then, they've picked a few new songs from BS and ED, play the same damn ones every night, and the rest is classics. There are songs that need a B..R..E..A..K.

This isn't directed toward you personally, but sometimes it seems like you guys didn't read any of the original listening party reviews, any of the ski resort reviews, or watch any of the video clips.
I did go back and listen to it and I heard the wailing :thumbsup So thanks for that.
True, I didn't read most of the listening party posts. I wish I had time, but I can't read every post of every thread I'd like to. I'm sure this goes for most of the Ants, as well. I did, however, read one of the reviews on there. :)

i really like the dream girl clip, i think out of all the clips it shows a cool new style! let some people have said, the last few seconds show the song going into a new grove which im liking alot!!! but smooth rider and dream girl are up there with hello again, joyride, and american baby as great new flesh songs of the album. i cant wait to hear SR and DG live!!! by the time it gets to randall and darien lake it will be sweet to see how these songs have changed and devleoped into "DMB" songs!

i don't like the idea of haveing to let these new songs grow on me. i should be able to like a song after the listen, especiall from DMB
The only DMB album that I immediately loved was Crash. All the rest, BTCS included, took time to grow on me. I find that songs I immediately latch on to are the ones I become sick of later on.

You know, Im getting a little angry. Well frustrated is more like it. I've been a fan for years, and I am just not seeing what I used to. I understand if the band is looking for a new style but I have to say that I hate what is turning out to be this pop-like cookie cutter, radio style, "dancable" crap. I am sorry, I don't regret it, I will miss the old Dave Matthews Band, I will still attend the concert that I have tickets for already, and I will have a good time, but this is not the band that I fell in love with in the 7th grade. I miss them. I miss getting chills from listening to new songs and I miss being facinated with every twist and turn of the music. I never thought I would hear a chorus from the Dave Matthews Band that was "Dreamgirl, Dreamgirl, Dreamgirl, Dreamgirl, Dreamgirl..." c'mon! I am just getting a little frustrated. Maybe I am totally wrong and off base, and maybe when I get the album, which I will, I will be blown away. Although I doubt it, I suppose its possible. But I am getting depressed just listening to them head down a slippery slope musically.

danceable is fine if well-executed. pop is fine if it's good pop. mainstream stuff tends to be neither of these things though.
i'm generally leaning your way though.

It just kind of makes me sad. I have fond memories of concerts where i felt high because the music was so amazing. I felt lifted off of the ground by it, I haven't felt that with any of their music recently.

I was underimpressed with YNK, i was more excited for something new than i was about its musical quality, I disliked most of Some Devil, but it did have some redeaming qualities, but it was okay because it wasnt DMB it was only Dave doing his thing, I just feel like he never let go, let loose on the album, and I did love gravedigger. SOL was good, just good.

I was actually suprised by how good this clip was, a new groovy sound. Very good single, i'm thinking, even after 41 seconds. I think this new more techy thing will dissapear a little in the concerts though and we'll see how cool of a song this actually is. More pure!

Ya, I agree. Just think how DDTW sounds on BTCS and what it sounds like live. HUGE difference.
By the way, I haven't seen abything about this yet. There have been many questions raised about guests on the album, does anybody here the female voice singing back up during the "...caught by a wave, my back to the ocean..." part? Anyone have any idea who it could be?

41 good seconds is atleast a start to 4 good minutes of a song. Lets hope atleast. Plus, this is the chorus, which usually is less enjoyable than the verse.

I don't post often here cause dave boards are completely out of hand and a lot of times not even worth your time. if you don't like the music they're putting out now then don't listen to them. it's as simple as that. the band is going through their own progressions and making music they like. if this is what makes them happy then that's all that matters. am i not right about that? sure they want to please their fans but not at their expense. they need to make music they enjoy and feel emotionally and not music they think will just make fans happy. some people on this board are really unbelievable.
there's not one thing wrong w/ saying you're not feeling the song or something along those lines. but when you start complaining about how you dont like the direction of the band and how times used to be so great during certain years blah blah blah really need to get a life. let the band make the music they want and if you don't like it don't listen. simple as that. :monkey i know i'm gonna get nailed over this but i can't get over how some of you react.

I heard the 40 sec clip of Dream Girl for the first time today. I could not have asked for a better clip of the second single. It's nice and basic but it has something special about it that only certain muscians can make apparent in a song. If the rest of the song is like this clip I think we will have another Crash into Me size single on our hands and most imortantly a great song.

you probably will get flamed for that, sooner or later...its a shame because what you said is 100% truth.

I know exactly what you mean my man. The 2001 sets were all very diverse and made the classics so much more special. People take things like: Rapunzel, Stone, Crash, LIOG, DIDO, for granted. The 2004 sets were weak in my opinion, they were just so damn similar. I saw the same show give or take a song or two many times in 2004. The band is only human also, so they get tired of playing the older songs every night that they have played every night for years. With a new album although we won't get as many performances of older songs the ones we do get will be killer versions. A lot of people think that the Folsom Crash is one of the stronger versions, I agree. The band hadn't played it a lot that tour so when they did play it they put everything into it. Seeing the progression of new songs is also awesome, look at Hello Again as a perfect example. Hello Again evolved and got much more intense as the summer went on. In 2001, the band was also ready to play many classics it takes them awhile to play usually. Watchtower usually never debuts until a good amount of show into a tour, they were ready to rock it the first night in 2001, I see the same thing happening in 2005. They will be ready to play things like: #41, Two Step, and Watchtower right off the bat. 2005 should be an epic tour. :monkey

For clarification, I'm nt talking about the "lion king" wailing. The voice sings the "caught by a wave..." part with dave at the 40 second mark. I can here it more as the song fades out. Maybe I'm still just making this up

That's an interesting comment. I once read an interview with Dave where he spoke about how some people criticized Carter's playing as "too busy" and that he never really understood why that was a criticism. I wonder if the band has felt for awhile that Carter should tone it down on the albums? I hope not.
