Anybody notice on your media player (Bring that Beat Back)? Interesting. . .

I think the whole album is going to be perfect for long drives and on repeat. . .

It has such a cool groove so far. . .

I do also. I mean, it is only a 40 second clip, but it seems to have a lot of complexity to it which makes me believe Dave was not just mailing it in.

Also, I think the quality of the clips themselves on the web site is poor and with all the songs, they will sound better on CD.

Gonna be another kick ass song....interesting how the song clip sounds like a different pace / different lyrics from the first video.....

any reason to think that the tracklist may be different than what we already know of? c since the order of the clips went DG, SR, ODH??? instead of DG, ODH, SR? Maybe they thought Dreamgirl-->Old Dirt Hill was too slow of a start and they wanted smooth rider to break it up

Anyone notice that low voice with Dave's - especially at the beginning of the clip when he sings "that old dirt hill?" Is that Batson or just an effect?

Yeah, I didn't express myself too well there. I realize that. I think a lot of people who were complaining about Dave's voice may be surprised when we hear the CD.

Yeah Dave has matured a great deal...I mean he wrote the majority of songs in the early 90s that are on the alubms pre every day...He was about 10 years younger then..

I like it a lot . . . from the clip, it sounds very mellow and sweet. I can't wait to hear the full versions. I'm like a puppy meeting a new person - everytime I hear a new clip I almost pee myself in anticipation of the full album. all you skeptics are entitled to your opinion, but I'm really digging the new tunes. if you can just pull yourself away from the idea that they're going to sound like "old DMB" (what the hell is "old DMB," anyway?), you'll enjoy these new grooves/styles a whole lot more. btw . . . what does this song remind me of? it sounds like something else I've heard (especially the first line "I used to ride my bike down that old dirt hill")

Theres actually a lyric in the song that says "bring that beat back to me, again"

...so the subtitle in () for the song probably doesnt allude to a jam

Carter is significantly reduced as a drummer on this album, thus far.
The beats sound EXACTLY the same.
The lyrics are unimaginably childish and immature. (After all, this guy penned Dreaming Tree, YNK, and many other lyrical masterpieces)
His voice is atrocious.

I understand that these are clips, but this does not mean I shouldn't criticize what I've heard, albeit not much...

The only clip I truly enjoyed was Smooth Rider since it was a darker song with a good organ in the back. The rest are primarily poppy and uninspired.

well, dude.. i completely disagree.. I think you either need to turn on the pop 40 channel in your town or turn up your damn computer speakers.. this shit is inspired, by the whole damn band... Boyd; "every band member had fun making this album." can you imagine a little strung out heroin addict sitting across from you with 20 songs already written and being like back me up.. granted it's dave matthews, but I like the fact they built a song around boyd, steffan.. and leroi.. that's not inspired!!!.. man, you cannot buy the album, but honestly.. you're criticising the Dave Matthews Band.. if they fucking released a heartbeat drum beat it would be amazing.. and and dave matthews's voice will never be, I believe you said, "atrocious", c'mon dude, it's fuckin Dave Matthews.. i've been a fan for 10+ years and i'm excstatic about the new album.. i really don't give a shit about your opinion.. and you might not give a shit about mine.. but I think mine is better. :thumbsup :thumbsup

Not that I'm saying I disagree with you about the lack of Carter, but don't forget that Kid A is an album which features mostly electronic drums. I think that's possibly my favorite album of this century. And Phil Selway is no Carter but he's a helluva drummer...

It's not a marketing tactic though. It's a "special benefit" that us WH members get. Just a little added bonus. A sneak peek will ya. so don't get bent out of shape that they're not "marketing" to other other fans because like i said it's not a marketing tactic.

Start with bold number one...not that i don't believe taht the band had fun making the album...but remember what the band was saying before Everyday came out, take waht they say with a grain of salt.

Not everything DMB is going to relese is going to be amazing. i.e. Everyday. They're going to have a few songs that don't make it sometimes. ehy just can't fart record it and release it and expect people to buy and love it (i.e. Everyday again) They lost fans cause of that.

And Dave Matthews voice can be attrocious at times. after a full summer of singing and his voice going out and super scratchy it becomes...well ok not attrocious but bad. But different people like different sounds.

:)

Definatly feeling the vibe of this song. I think the lyrics fit the groove well and are kind of childish in a way. Really hope there is a more upbeat part of the song, but if not it will still be good.

Sorry to double post but there could be a nice little upbeat part of this song, think if you took 43 seconds of Typical Situation, you would think, man nice little guitar riff but really slow...then that song has a very upbeat chorus...so once again we shouldn't judge before hearing the whole song.

Not to dispel some myth or anything about Carter because we all know he's one mother fuckin' badass!!! But I listened to the older studio albums and noticed his drumming wasn't too different. I had a couple of examples a couple days ago, but now I've forgotten them. I know was listening to #41 and noticing that his "beat" was pretty straight forward except when he had a fill here and there (and the jam). That is one of the most popular DMB songs to date and the drumming ain't that wild to say in the least.

I feel compelled to say this with those that find the drumming dry in all these clips (especially this one). After watching the American Baby, I was able to see/hear Carter do some stuff that I had previously missed that really spruces up the song in his percussion playing. The clip of Stand Up, shows him using some fun funky rhythms with the percussion as well. I wouldn't necessarily dismis Carter's role or "playing abilites" on this album.

Matt1838
04-19-2005, 10:26 PM
^ Agreed. I was listening to Crash the other day, and the studio drumming is much toned down from concerts. Stand Up, the song itself, exhibits an equal quality of drums as anything else, IMO.

This song is my favorite of all of the clips, and I like them all a lot. I think this cd is going to rule. I can't wait to hear what the rest of these songs sound like. Think of some of DMB's songs that are so different in parts. A 40 second clip just gives you a small peak. The rest of the song can be so different and can blow you away!

^ Agreed. I was listening to Crash the other day, and the studio drumming is much toned down from concerts. Stand Up, the song itself, exhibits an equal quality of drums as anything else, IMO.

sorry this is just plain inaccurate. The studio version has a few parts drumming wise that carter (I don't believe) can pull off every night.

Damn...you know what really sucks is that I haven't been able to listen to any of the clips! Wm player keeps giving me a damn error that an object or name was not found. I've tried everything I can think of....even unistalled windows media player & re-downloaded twice...still nothing...I like the reviews though...I guess I'll just have to wait until the album comes out!

This is easily my fave of the new stuff we've heard...although I'm not terribly fond of American Baby and the other sound clips, this one to me seems to have the least cliche lyrics and a little less generic feel to it than the other tunes. Of course, all this IMO

What? #1 How the hell would you know (in fact they sound quite dave-ish to me)

What I have heard so far leads me to believe we're all being lead on. I think they are intentionally giving us the slowest or least energy sections so that when we hear the full thing we'll all be blown away. I did like ODH. The first one I have really said "Yeah, this is gonna be good!" The others I am waiting on. I am hoping that the stuff will translate well into live shows, but it makes me sad because I can't go to a live show this year because I will be having a son around the time they are in my area. Oh well...I guess that's why we have wonderful tapers out there! In summary:
ODH: good. :)

more carter, roi, and boyd. besides american baby (and that was minimal)...haven't heard them on any clip.

clip being the operative word...because you couldn't hear them on a few second clip doesn't mean the entire direction the band is going in sucks.

I find it really strange that people complain about the level of involvement from the rest of the band, when each band member has raved over their own personal involvement. (Except Roi, but ya know how much he loves talkin into the camera)

04-20-2005, 11:11 AM
Once again, lets all remember these are 40 second clips....if you don't hear boyd or carter or steffan or leroi or even enough of Dave on the clips, chances are we'll hear them at another point on the song (obviously Dave)!! the great, and at the same time negative, aspect of the WH releasing these clips is that it builds anticipation - sometimes good and sometimes bad.

My grandfather always told me, 'patience is a virtue' - i'm gonna wait all of this speculation out for about another 20 days! and I'm psyched!!

dmbfan524

Also, I think the quality of the clips themselves on the web site is poor and with all the songs, they will sound better on CD.

I've noticed this before too... take a listen to the SD audio clips on the band's website. They sound terrible, and that kept me off buying the CD for a long time until I heard a friend's and realized they actually sounded good.

yeah this nonsense with Nick Lachey singing backup vocals is awful. This is the only song I just can't tolerate. It's great except for the crappy boy band backing vocals. Man, what the FUCK were they thinking? This is Batson's influence it seems. Although he has positive influences on the rest of the album for sure. I really like Stand Up, Louisiana Bayou, Out of My Hands, Hunger.., You Might Die Trying, Amercian Baby, Dreamgirl.

Here are some that were posted earlier:

Bring that beat back to me again
(Go on take me back, give me that, can't catch me, can't catch me??)
Bring that beat back to me again

Ride my bike down the old dirt hill
First time without my training wheels
First time I kissed you I lost my legs
bring that beat back to me again

screamin, shouting loud of innoncence
days when all we do won't never end

Bring that beat back to me again
(Go on take me back, give me that, can't catch me, can't catch me??)
Bring that beat back to me again

Smoking under the railroad bridge
I used to ride my bike down that old dirt hill
the first time I kissed you I lost my legs
Bring that beat back to me again

Screamin, shouting loud of innocence
days when all we do won't never end

screamin down that old dirt hill
bring that beat back to me again

thats when the days I remember
seem so far away
know its just a kiss, thats what i miss
its just a kiss, thats what i miss
take me back
take me back
to that beat again

smokin under the railroad bridge
bring that beat back to me again
bring that beat back to me again
bring that beat back to me again
the first time all we good good friends
bring that beat back to me again
(repeat until fade)

To me it sounds like almost everything that band fronted by Mark McGrath has put out. Can't think of their name for the life of me.

Case in point - I'm standing outside a friend's office today, and suddenly Old Dirt Hill comes on her radio!! WTF?!? This is Toronto!!
