When I first heard it last week, I hated it. After listening to it a few times, it began to grow on me. I think this clip might just be the one that gives away the least about the song. Hurry up May 10!

I agree with everything above ^^^. This song is a lot of fun and has a lot of different elements to it.
I can see it opening a lot of shows this summer.

Yeah this will be killer live, I believe it will become a staple to this tour...since this is obviously the beginning of the song, It will be a very recognizable start to a song, everyone will be anticipating what song is next then all of a sudden BAM Carter starts tearing it up on the drums by himself and everyone bust in after him!!! The energy will be through the roof...love it...

For the first listen to any of the clips this is the one I have liked the most. I love this new and different sound, great guitar riff, and like many have said this will be great live. From the 40 secs we hear I love it so hopefully I like the rest of it as much as I love the first 40 secs, I can see Carter going crazy on this song live.

Great song. Very different, but very different in a good way.

The clip sucks. I would never judge the song by a 40 second clip, but the guitar riff is about as thin as could be, like Too Much with too little. I hate that "Stand Up" that they keep saying, Leroi's flare is out of place, that high note that Dave hits is quirky, but it doesn't sound good. I still have a lot of faith in this CD. The other clips sound very promising. This one, I'm not sure about.

I concur with pretty much everyone else's view on this tune...very funky. Great live potential-- you gotta know there's gonna be some serious musicianship and quality jamming on this tune...album or live --let's hope this one jams out close to the 10 minute mark. At the end of the clip, Boyd's violin gets layered into the mix. I was trying to remember/listen to the video clip 3 (the one w/ boyd & the funky, upbeat riff) and I was thinking that it could almost work with this song. I think a Stand Up -> BOWA or Stand Up -> Ants or Stand Up -> ASTB -> Too Much would be smokin'!!!

I could not agree more, this clip has me believing that this song is the "I Did It" of the album. Very dissapointed by this clip, but I have never been much of a fan of the studio albums anyways. Hopefully I am not as dissapointed with the live version this summer.

What the fuck. That's all I can say right now is what the fuck. Of the 4 clips from songs I've heard from the new album, I only kind of like one, but Stand Up is by far the worst. I'm really beginning to think that DMB is creating another ED.

i feel this clip is definately remniscent of songs like too much stay and tripping billies...a song that will really get the crowd moving...it also has nice guitar work like dido the stone stay etc...very oldschool with a newschool twist....nice carter action too...if you dont have a positive outlook on this song than i dont understand what you were looking for from this album

my favorite so far . . . I am REALLY digging the funkiness of this song. the distorted voice at the beginning is very cool, IMO, though I know a lot of people aren't going to like it. I'm really enjoying hearing the boys' new styles and ideas . . . I think this new stuff is fantastic, and I can't wait to hear it in full.

The riff is very DIDO.
I tried to tell somone that the other day. They flung all these things about how its sooo different because of its difference in time signiture.
Screw timing, the last thing dave probably thinks about when he makes up a guitar lick is "now i want this to be in blank/blank time"
Song definitaly sounds like too much, dido, and maaaaybe stone if it were electric

I don't know. I deleted it last week, but I could probably do it again. But I doubt Matt would want to take a chance with Red Light. RL is ready to make an example out of anybody who missteps.

It's funny how this song reminds everybody of a different song. I think "What Would You Say" when I hear it. Not musically, but it has that same fast jamming feel with everybody making noise in the background and shit....It's so nice.
p.s.- Seems Carter may be leaving his mark on the album after all. Thank God!

This may have been mentioned before...but on all these clips Dave's voice seems to be sounding more and more like Peter Gabriel to me. Compare the timbre and inflection of the voice in these clips to ealy DMB and then listen to a Peter Gabriel record...see what you think sounds more similar...

yes he does sound like Peter. I think they are trying to make daves voice sound more raspy instead of nasely hence drawing more fans that were turned off by his voice on to this new sound. His voice has been changing for years and I dont mind the progression. Stand Up will be an awesome song live!

Peter Gabriel is in my top five favorite artists, so I'm very pleased. So is Radiohead... and Dave's article on them in Rolling Stone was fantastic. I love it when my favorite artists acknowledge each other in some way!

besides that - the song musically and the way dave sings it.... HOT SHIT!!

I don't think the clips are ED-ish at all. They are, however, different from "normal" DMB sound (if you can say that DMB has a normal sound...since BTCS they have been forever evolving (minus ED, that was devolving)) But if you mean they're making another ED because it's different than what you were expecting, than i'm sorry.
P.S. I agree...i think "stand up" is uttered a few too many times for a 50 second clip...but who knows...it sounded like the beg. of the song and maybe that'll be the only times it is uttered.

It sounds really over-produced to me.
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say you prefer live versions of songs over studio versions, just in general.
The studio is the studio for a reason--effects! edits! Things you can't really feasibly do on stage. The Beatles were a fantastic live band, but they utilized the studio to put out some incredibly original recordings.

what it probably is, is the fact that we only got 40-50 seconds and Stand Up is said through the whole thing. We really didn't get to hear as much of the lyrics as we probably would want to and get a true feel for the song. So everyone is going off of what they've herd. I mean you can take a part of Stay where all they were saying was "stay" and it'd monotinous and repetitive...untill you hear the full song then it all ties together. So really
I'll admit i was one who said that "stand up" was said too much...and it is...BUT only for that clip...once the song comes out then you can really judge if it's said too much.

Well that was crazy. For the most part, I never have felt there has been a huge difference in songs for dmb. I'm not saying that is the way it is, just the way i feel. But this one just sounds new and youthful. I look forward to this being a really fun song during the summer. I think its going to sound drastically different because they most likely wont be able to replicate all the production. But it should be a fun song

I think there is a good chance that this 40 seconds hardly tells the tale of this song. DMB's songs are so different in parts. This is the first 40 seconds of the song. It could go in a completely different direction and become a classic. Of course the opposite is also true. Maybe its wishful thinking but I'm sure there will be something in this song, even if its a little piece, that makes it enjoyable for DMB fans.
scad_ny_41
04-20-2005, 05:51 PM
I'm sure someone has already made this point, but repetition is nothing new to DMB. ex. So much to say, so much to say, so much to say, so much to say........I eat too much, I drink too much.....Stay Stay Stay Stay Stay for awhile, and how many DMB song mention rain or some form of water? Stand Up shouldn't be that much of a shocker. Sorry, needed to get it off my chest. Have a nice day! :D

I love the way this song sounds. If you have good speakers you can hear Dave singing something different in falsetto in the background during the verse. I love the background chatter during the beginning too, I know I heard Carter in there somewhere. Reminds me of some UTTAD and Crash songs. The direction this band is headed is looking bright to me right now. This album is going to have such a variety of sounds and genres it's going to be amazing. I think this album will be the true definition of DMB, whereas earlier albums were more of a true definition of Dave. I can't wait for the 10th! This sound like it could be one of the most fun songs that DMB has ever played.

THis clip is seriously ROCKIN!!!!!! I have listened to all the clips so far and this one by far is the one that shines bright. Don't get me wrong I've loved all of them so far , except for AB which is just plain weak, but the rest have the makings of a very good feel. dream girl I think sounds sweet and I believe we will hear some cool carter fills and Old dirt hill is just plain good. This one actually makes me want to get the fuck up and stand UP!!!!! and for the nay sayers........can you seriously say that after listening to this that you can't wait to hear carter tear the living shit out of this song?!?! because you know he will baby! a little boom ba da boom da STAND UP!!!

nah...it's perfect . actually it should have been the first single. I'll give you two good reasons.
1. it's the title track off the new album (perfect marketing , adds more knoweledge of album title)
2. well, it's a rockin' tune with serious potential, they obviously loved playing it since it's been rumored it was a fav in the studio.
as for wake up I unfortunately haven't heard the clip and I'm pissed.

Speaking of the Beatles, does this clip sound Beatle-esque to anyone else? I can't put my finger on it, but with the guitar riff and the harmonics in the vocals, it's sounding like a funky Beatles tune to me.

I would venture to say more like "Wings" rather than Beatles....which would make sense with the bass focus.
On a side note, the new single from Coldplay seems to have some McCartney & Wings influence too. Also, I just got word that McCartney is going on tour this fall...Atlanta stop is 20 September 2005 (two years to the day afte rmy first DMB show)!!! I want to go so badly!!!

that did it. many thanks!
and my thoughts on the clip: I like the funky feel to it. I'll have to hear the rest, but I think it could be a good starting point

No one seemed to even see what I posted in the Dream Girl on DMBStandUp.com:
Just thought you guys would like to know...the clips that have been "released" through the Warehouse are still up. If you go to http://www.dmbstandup.com and click on Dream Girl, change the titles like last week, then you can hear the four clips. No fancy cover names. I hope this doesn't start and uproar.

the first time i heard this song when alot of the songs were leaked last week, i was like: "WTF. this song is freakin weird. i dont like it." Now it is starting to grow on me and it sounds like the song is building up even more right when the clip cuts out. i think it will be a cool song, and carter will tear it to shreads.

All I have to say is listen to the clip stoned...you can hear so much in the background, there is constantly someone saying stand up...its really increadible, i almost lifts you off the ground...wow.

I saw pretty much the reaction I expected...most would love it immediately, some it needs to grow on, and some just don't like it at all. I love this clip, such an awesome, fresh new sound.
To me, this album could turn out to be a hybrid of BTCS & Everyday, maybe what ED should have been.

now that we have the full song at our disposal . . . anybody else hear screaming in the background during the 2:50 mark of Stand Up? it's followed by some scatting

ok, i heard this song at jazz fest. and i have to say it was lacking in some way.....i dont know what though, maybe the lyrics?
But i was thinking the band wants the crowd to interact with them by saying Stand Up.....so maybe once that starts happening the song will be more fun(if everyone actually gets into it).
just my thoughts...............

If you ask me, this 'sound' in Stand Up sounds very similar to Buckshot LeFonque (Branford Marsalis's mid 90's Jazz/rap/hip-hop experiment).

I think it is just a bunch of incoherent ramble. I like it though.
