I'm not sure about the harmonies, but in general I like it. I could see this being a pretty strong radio release, could anyone else see that? It'd be a good song for the mainstream radio to be playing.

Is it just me, or does this song sound like it doesn't really fit well with the rest of the songs we have heard? The other songs have a MUCH different sound than Hello Again. I feel like DMB just thought they had to use a song they had been playing over the summer, but I really don't think it fits well with the new "sound". Again thats just my opinion...what do you all think?

I agree, I don't think anything will beat the live version so there really wasn't any need to try and copy that, I think that this version is fresh, interesting and not necessarily the greatest, but I love the song and it will continue to be awesome. Looking at all of the clips knowing what Hello Again is like live and hearing pieces of the last couple clips, I think album is going to be outstanding, especially live, and even for a guy that liked everday I don't know how people compare the sound of this album to everyday.

I see what you are saying and that's what a lot of people at the listening parties have said, I think that almost every track we've heard so far in the clips have sounded like a different "sound" from each other and this is just another "sound" of the album.

I think with Lousiana Bayou, it will make more sense for it being on the album. I also think it flows with Smooth Rider.

I'm not going to rush to judgement just yet because supposedly it segues on the album right into Louisiana Bayou...once I hear that i'll be able to see how both of those fit together and make a statement on their own right.

I like it, but the one thing that's kind of weird is that how on the first songs we got clips of, Dave's voice sounded rough and raspy, while on the one song where it probably should sound that way, it sounds a lot cleaner. Live is definitely where it's at with Hello Again, but I think this is a great studio cut (really digging the random voices in the background and the "here we go"). It definitely sounds even more twangy and southern rock than I expected.

oh man, that is so fucking fresh. the backup vocals sound great and im glad theyre there, we all know the live version inside out by now, why would we want the same thing on a studio album? damn thats tight,
j
edit: also just realized, unless im mistaken, this is the first real constant vocal effect (assuming that it goes throug the rest of the song) since UTTAD with Rhyme and Nancies. of course theyve used them before with echoes and stuff, but im reminded of old school here

yeah, i was thinking about that in the car this morning, listening to how raspy he is on some of those clips, and wondering if he was really losing his voice or if it was intentional for the songs. i guess this proves he definitely still has his voice.
just something to consider, tho, is that this clip is just the beginning of hello again. from the listening party clip of hello again, at the end, he's definitely screaming it up. it was like the only thing i could really make out from those clips. i love the twangy and the beat to this song, and i think if it started out with a raspy dave voice, it'd take away from it.

You know nothing about me. I don't know where you get off saying something like that. You can think its the greatest song in the world. To me, that isn't the band. That's mark batson going overboard with the f'n organ and draining the energy outta the song. I dont' have to like every single on of their songs to be a fan of the band. True, I don't know you. I don't think it's the greatest but I do think it is symbolic of genuine DMB style. Batson didn't go overboard with anything on this song. How do you know Dave didn't say, "hey, this needs some organ". Besides that, I don't even hear the organ that much. No you don't have to like every single but the STYLE is what I'm referring to.

but i dont see how that guy thinks the organ is overboard when it was like that this summer, or why he's blaming mark for that. i also dont see how an album song is supposed to have the intensity of a live song, esp one like hello again. i mean, thats the point of dmb...

The organ has NOTHING to do with Batson man. They used it throughout the summer on this track!!! You are arguing that the energy is "drained"??? I think you were listening to a different clip from me and the rest of us. The energy is phenomenal and all over this clip!!! You liking/disliking the song is another matter and your opinion...which I respect. All in all, a studio version is not going to equal live versions of songs. For the most part, this is a good thing. The studio is a different place to explore the songs and do things that aren't always able to be redone live. Take The Beatles track "Tomorrow Never Knows" or the entire album "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" and see how studio wise it is in genius but wouldn't work live (for the most part). Look at BTCS, there were a bunch of things on that album that can't be done live. Appreciation of the studio is different than appreciation of a live show. If you want exactly what you get from a live show, then download or buy the live shows! The role of a studio album is not to copy a live performance.

That's such a cop out though to say that. I hated when mark said "well i guess these are just blueprints for what they do live so the songs are what they are" (somethign to that extent). Okay yeah dmb is a live band, i love that about them and that statement is somewhat true, but make the songs to the best of your ability in the studio. Don't just say, yeah its alright, its a good song, could be better but wait till you see what they do with it live. Why not do that in the studio? I never understood that. You can capture that in the studio. Look at bands like Zeppelin or CSNY. They got plenty of energy in the studio. I know bands feed off the crowds and what not, but it is possibly to create amazing songs in the studio with plenty of energy. I think 41 is a good example of that.

And by the organ I meant that batson controls the levels. I think its too prominent on the track. Same goes for joyride. I know they've been using the organ all summer. I think the organ sounds great on the GGP cut cause the organ isn't too overpowering. On the studio cuts of hello and joyride I feel the organ is far too loud. Just my opinion, and thanks to whoever above said they respected it if not agreeing with it.

Look at BTCS, there were a bunch of things on that album that can't be done live. Appreciation of the studio is different than appreciation of a live show.
I like the way they adapt every song on that album for a live performance. I think they can all be done live wonderfully.
However, they wont be the same as they were in the studio. Its pretty much expected that they cant have greg howard on the chapman stick for dreaming tree, or bela on banjo for spoon, but they certainly make do with what they have.

Exactly what I was saying. They aren't the same! For the most part, songs are usually better live, but some of the performances on the studio album(s) stick out and are amazing on their own. They really make a name for themselves in the studio.

That was absolutely fucking disgusting. Horribly overproduced, and what the hell is the point of the effect on Dave's voice? They took a great song and absolutely destroyed it (like the studio Joyride we heard). Thank god we have recordings of what these songs can be.

wow. To each his own but this song is pretty good. Hey, John Mayer has some songs or something.
I can understand people liking the organ. I don't understand why they would lay Dave's voice down the way they did. He's so far in front of the music in terms of volume and levels that it sounds an amateur with a microphone and Sound Forge recorded it.

I love the Hello Again studio clip and I love Hello Again live. Can't get much better than that.
Some people question whether or not the song "fits" with the rest of the album...a reasonable doubt. But when I look back to BTCS, I see a wide range of songs that don't necessarily "fit" together, either. Halloween, Stay, Rapunzel, Dreaming Tree. All great songs on their own, but I tried to imagine hearing 40 second clips from each song and then stringing them into one, flowing, album. I might have questioned how they were going to fit too. And I think that's the beauty of a classic album. Taking songs that have a unique sound all to their own and connecting them to a greater whole to produce an experience more so than just an average album. When ever I listen to BTCS, I feel like I'm taken on a ride - largely in part by the variety, the segues, the uniqueness in the songs, and all the textures that a studio allows.
I think the fact that Hello Again doesn't "fit" after hearing a clip is a good thing, a promising sign that Stand Up will be more than just another Everyday or BS. That is, of course, if Batson was able to bring the album together as a whole, like BTCS.

If the song really is in fact about an internal conflict of a killer fighting the urge to murder again (reflecting on his first and whatnot) I think an interesting production of the song might have included a call and response between the two ego's....one being in that vocal effect we hear now, and the other being normal.

Why not do that in the studio?
it's not a cop out, it's true. playing live stuff in front of everyone, where you're all just winging it at the same time, is a lot different than laying down parts in a studio, etc. i think both have their merits, and they do a great job in the studio. however, they are phenomenal live. i'd like them if they just played their studio songs over again live, the way most bands do, but i look at the live stuff as a bonus. and conversely, i think it's cool mark know enough about dmb to realize the live song, built over years of touring, is where dmb is at its finest.

Honestly? You get a rap producer, you get rap-style mixing. I really think it's that simple.
The closest thing DMB HAS EVER done to rap is Ants Marching.
Also, Batson is not a "rap" producer. He has produced a few rap/hip-hop albums and has been recognized for this, but he is not a "rap" producer. Read the interview with Batson and look at his background as a musician FIRST then his prodcuing second. I think you'll see that his "rap" albums are in the minority of things he has done. Yes, he has brought the influence into DMB with the sound of Carter's beats in a few of these clips, but I do not think you can honestly say that you hear that in this clip of Hello Again. There are studio effects on the vocals and the use of organ, but that does not equal rap, hip-hop, or pop to say the least. It also doesn't mean it's crap either. As said before, the studio is an entirely different environment than the road/stage for this band. After 14 years, I think that would be an obvious fact. If you don't like it or if you do like it, that's cool. I don't give a shit because you don't affect my judgement(s), but you do make yourself look like an ass with comments like these. You can be respectful too. To be respected/respectable is to respect first.

using "waste" twice is redundant
I, I, Hold, Hold...
"i am not worth the flesh on my bones
i am a waste of the air in my lungs"
is my most commonly used away message on AIM. I think its two of the finer lines written, ashame they had to go and change it.

If this is not allowed then completely ignore this, but I was wondering if someone could post the links for dreamgirl, joyride, and smooth rider. I am a WH member but didn't think to save the link when they were posted. To my knowledge, though, these songs have since been bosted on the albums website so the links shoud be able to be posted. Thanks in advance.

i'm not a big fan of the organ at all, seems as if it's turned up too loud. i don't like the voice effects much either, but those won't be there live. i think the song is similar to grey street in that it's damn near impossible to capture the intensity of the song in the studio. much better live song. i just hope that it doesn't suffer the fate of grey street's cut verse. from the clip, the lyrics stayed pretty much the same, which i was hoping for. overall, i think this clip is probably as good as the song was going to get in the studio.

Am I not allowed to dislike one of their songs? The organs are brutal... ugh.
I agree Butch needs to stop.
otherwise the song has major energy coming out of it! glad to hear that even the studio couldn't ruin it!

Some of it may be Mark Batson as well. Designer, in his "Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd Lyrics" Thread posted some song credits for the first 4 or so tracks.....Batson has got credit for playing Rhodes, Moog, etc. In addition to Butch of course.
Edit: P.S. Thanks for the props and rep point for my previous post. Glad others found it to be an interesting thought as well.

Yeah most reviews from Australia said HA still has the carter solo and it is as long as it was last summer. I think the GGP version has to be the most intense one from last summer. That version was so badass.

7/17 , 7/26 and 8/7 were by far the best of the tour.
edit* also deer creek .... actually if you go back over the tour you will find that deer creek's vesion changed the whole dynamic of the song. It's actually the first version where carter picks up the tempo near the end and from then on the song just grew. so we have carter to thank.

Some quick facts:
Hello Again was used as the first song in the encore on 3.21.05. It had the intro and a drum solo. And it checked in at over 8 minutes (including the intro).
No one should despair, HA will still rock.

Yeah, that version freaking ROCKS MY FACE OFF and then goes into Ants Marching! It's freaking great!!!
My favorite version comes from 7.27.2004! I know was there and that would lead to bias...blah blah blah...but oh man, the energy in that version and the drum solo KICK SERIOUS ASS!!! Some of the intro (about 15 seconds) is at the end of the previous "track" on the recording I have, and with that the song clocks in at about 9 min 45 seconds. It is freakin' sweet!!! I love the Dave wails in this one....and the "improv verse" at the end after the drum solo is SWEEEEEEEEEEET and then Dave starts into YEAH YEAH, YEAH YEAH, HELLO HELLO YOU KNOW HELLO....etc into the end which is just SOOOOOOO friggin' sweet!!!

Sort of....but not as close as that bit in Ants. There is a "melody" in the DOOF verses and not just "rapping." But it IS close!

Yes, I can give you a link....but first you must answer these questions three:
Question the first:
What was the first version of Satellite called?
Question the second:
What album is the song Spotlight on?
Question the third:
What was the name of the bar Dave worked at when he created the band?
You have until 3 o'clock Ants time.

Just listened to it. Love it! Very cool. Totally dig when Dave says "Here we go now." Very tight! I'm looking forward to listening to the complete version.
Perhaps this is just me, but has anyone else noticed that the songs DMB wrote for the new album pre-Batson are on a different level of awesome (i.e.: SW, HA, GGT, JR...)? But then you have songs like Stand Up (granted, I haven't heard the complete version, yet) that are just not the DMB we've heard before. I mean, they don't even sound like something that Glen Ballard would have them create.
Just my $.02.

There is some very intelligent and good rap out there. Unfortunately it's not really the popular rap (with few exceptions) there are some AMAZING lyricists, a friend of mine being one. And some of the things they do on the spot amaze me...much like some of the stuff dave can come up with one the spot amazes me. And then if yuo want to get into producing...it is different....but should not go unappreciated.
But the problem people have sometimes is that they look to mainstream rap. And lots of that is garbage. I mean we dont' look to mainstream rock to find good rock so why would you look to mainstream rap, ya know.
sorry for the off subject rant....HA is wonderful. :monkey

There? Convinced? No? Well, I'm not convinced of your side either, so shut up and we'll both be happy.
whether you like it or not i have a hard time believing it is "fucking disgusting, ...this Hello Again sucks." saying that just makes you sound like an asshole. but most assholes, like you, seem to like to get everyones panties all in a bunch, so mission accomplished. i haven't listened to any clips, i am just going by your responses. "ah hah people agreed with me, so i am right, you are wrong" grow the fuck up. just say you like the live version better because of the energy and go on your merry way. people will respect your input alot more that way. you heard a fucking clip and you are judging the entire mix and song.

Hello Again sounds like it is going to be fantastic. Dave's voice sounds fantastic... I really like everything about the clip. I don't mind the organ at all - it's nice to hear Butch on the record, especially considering how empty Everyday and Busted Stuff sound withour Mr. Reynolds....

I'm a little annoyed that the background and lead vocals harmonizing don't synchronize very well. In the studio, they should be able to easily synchronize this, which leads me to believe it's intentional that they didn't.

I love this song, but it doesn't sound that good on this album. It is a little out of place but also the quality is not doing it justice. I'll reserve my final judgement when I hear the pure 5.1 high quality sound.
