Am I the only person who isn't liking what they're hearing on the new cd, Stand Up? I think that the producer was a total mistake. He completely changed DMB's total image. There's nothing wrong with change..but only if it's a good change. This wasn't. Every song sounds the same. I swear Carter does the same drum beat over and over again. Where's Carter's REAL talent? I really hate bashing Dave or any of the other guys. But what happened to "Hello Again", "Joy Ride", "Crazy-Easy", or "Sugar Will"?? What happened to what we heard in the summer? That's Dave. Not "American Baby" with the hip hop vibe. Hopefully this isnt Dave's last cd. The band can't end on a bad note..literally.

okay listen, everyone has their own opinion. but dave and the boys are not going to change their ways because some people don't like it. dave puts the music out there and he doesn't care what people say, but he hopes most people dig it.

I like some of the songs, and I dislike others. At least based on the clips. Which is premature anyways. But I like the idea that the band is actually doing something different. Sometimes change can be good, sometimes not. We shall see, with this one. Either way, it doesn't sound as disappointing as Everyday did.

My Thoughts...By Derek
Every once in a while the Dave Matthews Band releases a new studio album. Around this time and the weeks prior to the release date a lot of users post on these message boards. How come people who NEVER POST HERE, come and trash the boards with complete idiotic thoughts? As said earlier, Aaron Carter and Jesse Mcartney have a great fan base looking for users to join there boards. Venture your thought to those sites.
Have a good day all.

:lol Yea, That's why the album name is Stand Up. You see, when the guys were making the album, they all got a case of really bad diarhea and they'd all being sitting on toilets. So, they'd think they were all done, then "Stand Up", then they'd realize they weren't done. From then on out they starting yelling Stand Up at each other to give each other a hard time. Then one day, after they were all better, Carter laid down a really good groove, Mark Baston heard it and started yelling, "Stand Up, Stand Up." They all started laughing and from then on out it was all history.
There is the story of Stand Up.

You're entitled to your opinion but you're saying the entire album sucks and there is nothing good about it yet you've only heard 45 second clips. That just seems kinda stupid to me. On May 10, or whenever you get the album, listen to it in its entirety and then feel free to come back here and tell us if you still think there is nothing good about it.

I shit on this thread. I honestly dont think people think this cd is bad, cause it sounds pretty decent so far. People are afraid of change, period. They hear these clips and they dont hear the Ants or Warehouse sound so they wet the bed. On the flip side, if DMB kept putting cd's out that sounded like "vintage" DMB, people would be bitching that they need a new, fresh sound. Its a lose lose situation for the band. A true fan of any band progresses with the music.

..and have you ever heard anyone say, "man, i really don't like the first 45 seconds of that song. but the rest of the song is fantastic!"

That made zero sense to me...
First of all most clips are not of the beginning of the song, and second of all, even if it was the beginning, that doesn't damn the rest of the song necessarily.

Thankyou. I could not agree with you anymore. This band has gone downhill ever since they got of Lilywhite. I'm not going to anyshows this summer because this album will be as bad as everyday. Think about it...DMB is not mainstream...they have enough of a following to keep them popular. But that following developed in the BTCS era and before and have been moving along with the band. I think this album will be a turnpoint for the band, where it really starts to go downhill. I'm not going to buy the album, they have really let me down. At least U2 is still out there and have a great album out!

That's what I respect about it so much. I will listen to them for forever. Some albums I'll like some I'll hate either way I'm a fan they've earned it. Just like metallica for me , they pissed me off shook me up and I am still ready to slap my money down and go sing creeping death with 20,000 other fans. The point is ....I'm here for the long haul they are a part of me as much as the other things close to my heart!

That made my fucking night!!! Thanks man!!!

its understandable if you dont like the new sound from a jamband perspective. Ever since BTCS, DMB couldnt help themselves but move more to the mainstream. Just look at the song STAY...that is way too radio friendly probably even more than crash. If you dont like the new sound then keep listening to your jam bands cause this band will never be the same and they were never a jamband to begin with. Listen to the album from a pop/rock perspective. I think DMB has effectively captured the present mood of the day with this record from what I have heard. Its upbeat, funky and it will be great to hear loud!
i really like the clips from the new album so far.
...but even if it is a horrible album, its not the end of the world and dmb will still be playing great music at the concerts. we still have the past 15 years of dmb music that im sure will satisfy you for the time it takes for the next album to come out.

My deal is I don't understand why people define DMB as a very versatile band (which they are) and then when they do "different" things, which is always, they bitch. I just read a quote from DJM from 5-29-02 that said "I just love music, that's why I play it." That's exactly how I feel too. I also love listening to all different styles, which DMB does! I love that about them. That is what I THOUGHT that is what the majority of the DMB fanbase loved about them, that they do so many different styles and blend these together. Maybe I'm wrong.

The new songs have been pretty thorough so far with the exception of some of the choruses. Regardless, there's no reason not to be excited about a great band experimenting with new sounds and with a new producer. The band is even throwing in a bonus cd which should please a lot of folks who liked the summer 04' material. I remember the backlash when Crash came out and the crying that accompanied BTCS. Give it time, crack open a Guiness listen to the album then base your judgement. We have NEW music coming folks. If your not excited just wait for another Live Trax release or put your ol dmb cd's on repeat.....Let's keep it moving.

Um, have any of us actually heard the album yet? OH, right... didn't think so. So, anyone who has an actual opinion of the quality of this album.... well, just think about how ridiculous that really is.
It's one thing to maybe not be so jazzed about a clip, but to go on and on about how this is the end of DMB and this sounds nothing like them, blah, blah, blah.... it's getting old already.

Carter even admitted he's less busy on this album, just cause it's simpler doesn't mean he can't go off on thes tunes live. As far as Boyd, listen to Intro, he's fucking all over that. And as far as LeRoi, incase you haven't heard he's the FIIIIYAAAAHHHHHH, he owns this album.
Lillywhite was good for the band in the 90s, but look at the lillywhite sessions, sure the music was good, but the band was depressed and wanted to play football more than be in the studio. They are having fun again in the studio with Batson, and they are all in on it together, not like Everyday with Ballard.

headlessnancie (thread starter),
Anyone who thinks that DMB is NOT MAINSTREAM, really has their heads up their or someone else's ass. Maybe this is sarcasm I'm not picking up on and I'm responding because studying for exams has me delusional, but it should be repeated nonetheless. DMB couldn't be any more mainstream. I agree that this isnt the "real DMB" but I dont think that means you cant like the CD. It sounds like there's going to be a bunch of good songs off this album. Although I do agree that over the summer when I heard Crazy Easy, Hello Again, Joy Ride, Sugar Will, and Good Good Time I felt like it was the first time in years that DMB put out any new, good, DMB sounding songs. Everyday was not the bands style and the BS stuff was mostly written in 2000 or earlier. So it's been a while since we got new stuff like last summer and I'm a little disappointed that only Hello Again made the CD.

Imo, DMB is about as mainstream as the Grateful Dead was. Just because most people have heard of The Dave Matthews Band, doesn't mean that most of those people have ever heard their music or have a clue as to what it's all about. I really don't see the logic in your post.
Also, with a post like that, I'd be careful about soliciting rep. points

You know i have been hanging back and reading what ppl have to say which the community is divided right now but I must add that while i first listened to the clips i was taken aback by the change up of sound but last night i played all the released clips again and was getting pumped up for the full versions of these songs. Man i know for fact that a great deal of ppl on these boards don't remember the old days of the band and hindsight is always 20/20 so listening to the pre-BTCS shows ppl are like damn this band rocks but it took time to get there and ppl bashed BTCS at first and LWS too. Point being that i don't care what album has been released they all have to grow on you and to bash the clips is just plain PMSing by the "fans". When UTAD was first released it had to grow on me and my friends just like the new album. Just to draw a legendary comparison Led Zep and the Beatles both have a plethora of tunes and not everyone is a masterpiece but a great collection of work nonetheless. So please stop bitching that the music sounds too R&B or Rap driven b/c that is the current trend in music and i give the band credit for trying something a little out of the ordinary but just remember DMB is a band not just Dave's direction and for sure other musical genres have to be explored.

Yeah could u imagine what the fans were saying circa-late 70's when the Dead explored the Disco driven sound. i'm sure if there was the internet and message boards ppl would have predicted the end of the Dead with that attempt but they recovered.

Some of you may not believe this but I hated Before These Crowded Streets when it first came out. I was like "what is this Egyptian crap they are throwing in here?" The only song I could stand was Don't Drink the Water. Now - for obvious reasons - many of the songs off that album are some of my favorite DMB tunes. I can see the same thing happening with Stand Up - at first - many of us may be like WTF?!?! So - the moral of my story - give it some time to actually do some solid listening before you judge.

First off, I hope I don't come off as a dick in this, I think I have in just about every thread I've posted in lately. Secondly, someone earlier mentioned something about post count, that shit is assinine. Some people, myself included, have been around for a long, long time, like dmbml days (what??? exactly, alot of people don't even remember that site), we just never post. But to Rippy's comments. To say "it sounds decent" so far seems to be OK around these parts based on the clips, but on the other hand, to say it sucks based on the same clips, is immediately met with a barrage of "you can't judge an album..." or "you haven't even heard...." blah, blah, blah. Its the same thing, just differing opinions. Secondly, and I've used this arguement many times, just because it makes the most sense to me to relate to, so here goes...I'm a HUGE Detroit Tigers fan. I always have been, always will be. If they all of a sudden just sent Bonderman, Guillien, Inge, Pudge, and Nook Logan to the waiver wire, I would be pissed. And I would vocally tell anyone who would listen, including a Detroit Tiger's message board, how upset I was and how much I don't like the "change". So while I agree that the band changing is a lose lose situation, to say that "any true fan" progresses with the music, I think, is ignorant.

You need to listen to the clips through speakers or head phones, do not use your computer, you will quickly hear the fact that this is Stefan's album, sooo funky, sooo smooth, I love it. Personally I think they are trying to eliminate some meatheads by making music that is more jammy and sounds less mainstream. It is about time!!!!!!!!1

I personally am very happy o see the bnd start to experiment, but anyone who thinks this music isn't 'pop' or 'mainstream' realy does have their head up their ass. Same thing goes with anyone whoever thought they were a jam band! Sorry they never have been , Dave just writes interesting music that's all. Now we've got the band collectively writing together...and obviously a different sound. The most amazing part of the whole thing is that these guys are so talented and level headed that we may be about to go through another music evolution (ala Beatles ect.) right now in our time with our favorite band. I don't only mean just with stand up but with hopefully many new albums to come. Sorry but two of the best albums every made (Sgt. Peppers and Abbey Road) were shocks to the system and I think the boys are capable of that.

Somebody made a good point in another thread about BTCS. What were you thinking when you heard a 40 second clip of The Stone? It was VERY different at the time. Even though the clip for that was scary, it has grown to be one of my top 5 favorite DMB tunes. Maybe when the alubm comes out, everyone will realize that DMB has not gone to shit.....

No, DMB would have gone to shit if they had made a predictable, 90's sounding album. They would have become old, tired, and irrelevant.
I'm confident this album's going to be a hit. No 2 DMB albums sound alike, and that's a rare, great thing in a band.

anyone who is hating the songs i have one thing two things to say...
a) what if the 40 second clip you heard of Stay was the part where Stefan breaks it down? or of Ants Marching where Dave is doing his "cut cut cut" rap... or the slow intro to Dancing Nancies... or the slow intro to Say Goodbye... those clips dont reflect the nature of the songs... as we've heard from accounts from the listening party... these clips arent good representitives of the songs as a whole
and
b) Experimentation opens the doors for the possiblities of more kickass live shows... How kickass were D+F shows... these new songs are gonna create the potential for DMB to blow the pavillion roofs off of their shows... i think that some of these songs may be the best live songs we hear... (See: Stand Up, Hunger For The Great Light, Hello Again, Louisiana Bayou and Old Dirt Hill...)
you may not like the songs... but do they have potential? we already know about Hello Again and how wicked it is live... and how it doesnt sound as good (IMO)... why couldn't one apply that to the other songs... sometimes unproduced music is the best...

The band can't end on a bad note..literally.
may 10th...just save it

hey buddy, if you dont like it then dont go to the shows man, because me personally and im sure there are many ppl who agree with me, we dont wanna see you sittin on your little blanket holding your phone up to your friends because they finally played your favorite song "where are you going". you go there to give it up to the band and get nuts and dance and sing no matter what the hell they are playing, and if everyone would just finally do that and quit being jerkoffs, they would probably get so psyched up and start doing some real sick shit, so if you dont like it, i heard the backstreet boys are back on tour, HOP ON!!!!

just wondering... but what exactly is the transition that a band needs to take before they cross over to Mainstream?
shorter songs? experiementing outside of their 'jam band hippie' stereotype? im sorry... in the words of Dave Matthews, "Why dont you shut the F*** up!"
Dave and 50 Cent... thats the dumbest thing ive read on these boards... its Dave and The Game obviously
