View Full Version : Stand Up vs. X&Y

With Dave Matthews Band and Coldplay being bands that most would consider to be in the same general musical direction, and both bands having new albums coming out in the next two months; how do you think each album will compare to the other? For me I would say:
Most copies sold in first week of release: Stand Up
Most copies sold overall: X&Y
Most critically acclaimed (Grammy nods, etc.): X&Y
Most chart success: Stand Up
Most succesfull single: Stand Up
Most accepted by their respective fans: X&Y

Most successful single will probably be X&Y

i was thinking that might be the case too, but i think that Dream Girl might be the perfect summer-type love song and the teenie boppers might eat it up.

Most chart success: X&Y
Most succesfull single: X&Y

Overall, I think Coldplay's album will do quite a bit better than DMB. Afterall, A Rush Of Blood To The Head did a lot better than Busted Stuff. BUT, I will love Stand Up more than X&Y because I love DMB.

i love coldplay, but something tells me this album wont break down too many walls for the band. dmb is constantly evolving which ill credit them for. thats why theyve survived. speed of sound is a sweet song, but if you dont think it sounds like clocks, sorry, but you can play the two songs right over each other. still a good tune, but nothing new.

the better comparison would be X&Y vs. BTCS. Both bands third major realease (R2T doesn't count). Who knows what direction Coldplay will go after this one.

Thats the only disappointment I had with Speed of Sound. It's good...I do like it, but its just more of the same. The only thing different is the chorus really. I think Chris opened up his vocal range for it more than he usually does.

I factored in the Boss' new CD...
Most copies sold in first week of release: Devils and Dust
Most copies sold overall: Stand Up
Most critically acclaimed (Grammy nods, etc.): Devils And Dust
Most chart success: X & Y
Most succesfull single: Stand Up

yep all those people that say the love (but really only know one or two songs) would probably love that song and it would get good radio play

I really don't know much about Coldplay other than the singer is banging Gwen Paltrow, but who really cares about all this? Chart success, singles, etc, etc. The fact remains that this is a DMB-based site and in here. . .NO ONE can dispute the "Virginia Band!" I don't know about numbers or records sold, but I do know that whatever the hell album Coldplay released doesn't hold shit up to Busted Stuff or DEFINITELY not BTCS.

Rush of Blood to the Head only sold 3+ million copies in the U.S. and Parachutes didn't even reach the 3 million mark.
Everyday sold as many copies as Rush of Blood to the Head so I think DMB will sell more total albums but Coldplay will win out in the other categories.

dmb is my favorite band, ever (more than the beatles...jack johnson... paul simon and everyone else i listen to a lot), and im calling that X&Y will mop the floor with Stand Up. i can't believe the the overall opinion of standup so far. it's like if dmb stamps their name on something now -- we all love it, you know? compare the songs Stand Up or Lousiana Bayou (the two which we've heard in full so far) to any previous dmb song. i was REALLY looking foward to Sugar Will being released, and it somehow didn't make the cut. and you can't say im pessimistic or hate dmb's new stuff, i like ED, BS, and SD -- they were all pretty good...

The advance buzz on X&Y is fantastic and growing each day. While it is universally agreed that U2 holds the place of "World's Greatest Rock Band", it seems that most have designated Coldplay as the heir apparent. Their third effort will perform nicely on the charts and sell bundles, Capitol Records/EMI is counting on it and will pull out all the stops to promote the hell out of it.
DMB has never been a darling of the critics and I don't expect Stand Up to make them drool over our favorite band either. While it is obvious that DMB is ready to expand their fanbase by pushing their new album overseas and performing there as well, they are not a band that is perceived as breaking new ground and their music is not all that radio friendly. I should qualify that by saying that their previous records have not been all that radio friendly, save for perhaps Everyday which was geared towards solving that problem for the band.
I love DMB and I hope that I love the new record. However, my feeling is that this is just another step in the evolvement of these musicians after more than a decade together making music. I admit that I am apprehensive about the new record, though trying to reserve judgement until I have heard it in full and in context. What does excite me though is that these guys continue to push themselves and seem hungry to prove their place as one of the great bands in music. The creative explosion that Dave, in particular, has gone through over the past four years is exciting and makes me think that there are some great and suprising things ahead in coming years.
Bottom line is that DMB is one of those acts that sells 2-3 million records, give or take, every time out. This time is likely to be the same result for them while Coldplay will be considered a huge failure if their worldwide sales of X&Y do not exceed 10 million, which they will. :bounce

I think they will both be great albums but Stand Up will be better. I mean Speed of Sound sounds just like Clocks almost. At least the songs on Stand Up are different. Terrible logic. To say that "at least DMB tries things that sound different" is laughable. Clocks sounds like nothing else on A Rush of Blood To The Head, which is a wonderful album, top to bottom, and has songs that all sound different.
Honestly, anyone who wants to try to deny that DMB has had far more misses than hits recently is fooling themselves. I will not deny that DMB has amazing talent, and may be able to pull something surprising off, but as has been stated in the billion Everyday/Ballard/Lillywhite threads, the standards have been lowered. Every once in a while, we get a You Never Know or something surprising, but unfortunately, its a surprise, and not the norm anymore.

i agree that dmb has been around much longer and therefore should evolve more. but album number three, dont drink the water was much different than anything before it and that was the first single. im not saying that SOS is identical to clocks, but it has the same beat and syncopation. its a sweet song, most coldplay songs are. but its nothing groundbreaking for them. the comparison is there. if BTCS wasnt an evolution for the band, then nothing was. didnt mean to anger you with my observations.

Pearl Jam definetely has the most energy going out of all the shows I have been to. I have seen both PJ and DMB live at least 20 times each, and PJ's energy can usually beat DMB hands down. Don't get me wrong I love DMB shows but Ed and the boys can keep everyone involved the whole show and make it seem like you are in an intimate theater even if you are in an arena.

Just to respond to two earlier posts...
If you don't think A Rush of Blood to the Head is better than Busted Stuff, then you might want to see about an ear transplant. Busted Stuff's production was incredibly mediocre, it sounded quite passionless compared to alot of DMB's other work, and the only reason it got the fan response it did was because Everyday came out before it. On the other hand, you have AROBTTH, which doesn't have a bad song on it and really showed the growth that Coldplay had between that and the release of Parachutes. The songs are SO well crafted on that album, the use of various instruments was perfect, and honestly, I think it was the best album that came out that year. If you argued that it wasn't as good as LWS, your comment would carry more weight. And yes, BTCS is certainly better, but that's also one of the best albums musically by any band I've ever heard. But Busted Stuff being better overall than AROBTTH??? Not a chance...
Second, DMB is definitely not the best live band I've ever seen. Pearl Jam and U2 are far and away higher on my list, and I'd probably put Phish ahead of DMB as well if you catch them on a good night -- some nights were just bad both musically and setlist wise, but every band has those. I only caught Phish 3 times unfortunately ( :( ), but seriously, every show I saw was just mindblowing with what those four guys did on stage. Not to mention that Trey is pretty much the best musician of "our" generation (the 20's crowd). The guy is just a machine when it comes to taking great music to another level live. DMB is still my favorite band to see live, because they're my favorite band overall, but the aforementioned artists have each put on at least one better show that I have seen than DMB.

I listen to the B-sides from that album, and I can't believe that those were left off and that was inserted. Would have so much rather had a cleaned up and completed "I Ran Away" than that. I don't skip it and it does sort of fit in with the general aesthetic of the album, but it's a weak track.

I might need to get my hands on some of those b-sides, especially that song.

Boy, I couldn't disagree with you more. I think that song was fabulous! I think that the jam 3/4 of the way through it is awesome and I think that Leroi totally rips that song up! Good Lord, I have to disagree.
I know man, SW had the energy hopping through the building. Hell, SW ahd to have had as much energy as Watchwoter :rolleyes

i love coldplay, but something tells me this album wont break down too many walls for the band. dmb is constantly evolving which ill credit them for. thats why theyve survived. speed of sound is a sweet song, but if you dont think it sounds like clocks, sorry, but you can play the two songs right over each other. still a good tune, but nothing new.
jIt sounds much more like "Moses" than "Clocks."
Anyway
Best Album this year: Pearl Jam "Untitled" with X&Y second
Sell the most records: Stand Up
Best Single: X&Y
I totally disagree with everyone about the energy at Pearl Jam shows. I think Pearl Jam used to put on great shows 10 years ago, but the live shows recently have been poor set lists and far too much yapping from Eddie, which is not interesting at all.
In My Tree which is one of the band's best songs is completely butchered live.
Coldplay are amazing live and Alan was standing up during the whole show the last time I saw Coldplay and it wasn't because I was short - yet I do expend far more energy during a DMB show. :)
U2 are an excellent live act and no-one can deny that. The amount of running around Bono does at his age is comparable to the amount of running around Axl used to do at 25, yet Bono can still sing while doing it.
Other acts who are excellent live in my opinion
Nine Inch Nails
Dandy Warhols
Bruce Hornsby
Tool
A Perfect Circle
The Verve
King Cobb Steelie
Brad
Stabbing Westward
Bela Fleck and the Flecktones
Dire Straits
Toad The Wet Sprocket
Jane's Addiction (especially when they toured with Flea on bass)
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Killing Joke
Pop Will Eat Itself

Most copies sold in first week of release: X&Y
Most copies sold overall: X&Y
Most critically acclaimed (Grammy nods, etc.): X&Y
Most chart success: X&Y
Most succesfull single: X&Y
Most accepted by their respective fans: X&Y
Having said that....I think I will like Stand Up more, but the general public won't.
i totally agree, accept im not sure if ill like stand up more, even though i like dmb more.

I can't believe someone thinks Busted Stuff is better than A Rush Of Blood To The Head. To each his own. DMB is a better " band " than Coldplay by a mile, but Coldplay's last two studio albums beat the crap out of Everyday and Busted Stuff.

Coldplay is good and at first kind of sounded like DMB, but I think as far as radio play, Dreamgirl will run circles around a Coldplay single just because DMB's "love songs" do seem to attract a huge amount of new listeners. As far as album sales, I think it will be close with maybe a slight edge to DMB. I think both albums will be very good to great and should make for a great summer.

I couldn't have said it better myself. DMB is much better, especially live but their last two albums definitely fall short to Coldplay's last two. But I am hoping Stand UP will bring DMB back to where they pre-Everyday.:hump

I honestly thing that coldplay will blow stand up out of the water
one, coldplay's been gone for a couple of years, and also i dont think stand up is going to be anywhere near the album thta most of us were hoping/expecting for....and coldplay just really rocks and would not have their first studio album in a couple of years be lackluster at all

ha. while ive been a dmb fan forever, coldplay will own dmb in all of those categories. coldplay is bigger than dmb ever has been or will be. they're much more popular in a global sense and are much more relevant to today's music scene. anyone who thinks stand up will sell more than X&Y is incredibly narrow-minded. whether you hate coldplay or not, accept the fact that they are much bigger than dmb.
dmb and coldplay are both amazing live bands. i have seen dmb 13 times (including jazzfest last saturday) and coldplay twice. dmb is definitely better in terms of flat out musical ability. to me, the goal of music is to affect people. dmb was flat at jazzfest; it was lifeless at times compared to past shows ive seen. while coldplay is more of a "simple" band, the reason they are so popular is because they are both broadly emotional affecting and accessible. dmb seems to have that accessibility but is now missing on the emotional side of it on many songs. i absolutely love songs like dreaming tree, spoon, pig, stay or leave, cry freedom, stone, pay for what you get, grey street, halloween, bowa, diggin a ditch, etc. - songs that make me feel something..whether it's thoughtful, sad or happy to be alive. but so many of their songs are completely devoid "dave's amazing lyrics." so many of their live staples (thoguh might be fun, which is a good thing usually) just dont have any meaning to them really...too much, what would you say, jimi thing etc. orrrrr their meanings are typical and not presented in a fresh way. im just hoping some of these new songs help out the set and actually have some solid lyrics/meaning to them

i agree that dmb has been around much longer and therefore should evolve more. but album number three, dont drink the water was much different than anything before it and that was the first single. im not saying that SOS is identical to clocks, but it has the same beat and syncopation. its a sweet song, most coldplay songs are. but its nothing groundbreaking for them. the comparison is there. if BTCS wasnt an evolution for the band, then nothing was. didnt mean to anger you with my observations.
-j You didn't anger me. It a good point about DDTW, and I probably overstated that BTCS wasn't an evolution, but I have to ask you, do you listen to Coldplay outside of their radio songs? Its very naieve to think Speed of Sound is the best song on X&Y
interesting............that reaffirms my post........ hahahaha, that was fantastic, after listening to it, I think it reaffirms mine.
I could put Since You've Been Gone and Fool To Think over each other and get something that sounds exactly the same because they're kept in the same time.

yeah man, i love coldplay. ive got parachutes, rush, live 2003 (which was a let down unfortunately), trouble norwegian live ep, and the sparks single import (see you soon studio, so beautiful). someone mentioned that SOS sounded more like Moses a while back and ill admit ive only heard that once or twice cause the live album's just collecting dust for now, but i usually prefer the non-singles. im confident that SOS wont be the best song on X&Y and im excited to be proved right when that album. its still a sweet song, you cant really go too wrong with coldplay when theyre polished in the studio. its just very... typical, i guess. which still isnt bad, it goes different places than clocks once it breaks out of the verse. but its still not quite as refreshing as hearing something really new from dmb. im glad i didnt anger you earlier, this is turning into a nice little conversation either way,
