View Full Version : Stand Up - Hunger for the Great Light Discussion

one of the only songs still without a thread to discuss it, and it definitely deserves one. this song is so vastly different from anything dMb has ever come up with before, but it is absolutely rockin'. I think that it's going to absolutely blow people out of the water live. I know some people aren't going to like it because of the new sound/style . . . but if you can get over the notion that dMb now is supposed to be the same dMb as 5 or 10 years ago (ie. acknowledge the fact that bands "evolve"), then I think you'll find this song as awesome as I do.

i knew it. Listen to the outro and imagine "song that jane likes". thats why I like the song so much :lol the progression is similar at times, and that outro is spot on to Jane, I think :)

Yeah, feels forced to me.
I think it would have flowed better if it had come in at least 10 seconds after the song had ended, and crept in with low volume.

actually i think this ablum has a bit of everything like
stand up gives a crash feel...probably b/c of the too much similarity
hello again to me seems like it should have gone to busted stuff but that might be b/c of grace is gone
and for some reason i get this vibe of uttad from smooth rider...it just reminds me of what would you say, its werid and i wish i could explain it but i cant.
this is what makes this album just so damn cool. it's so different but at the same time it still relates to another album or song in some way then again thats just me

I like this song a lot...really good beat...except for the chant "o great light of love" in the middle...
I`ve listened through the album 3 times now, and this song is by far the best..It doesn`t seem to be over-produced, like some of the other songs..

I really dig this tune. Reminds me of Nirvana musically, with that touch of DMB still in the foreground. I think this is really gonna rock out live, and it might kinda to the way of What You Are in a sense that it goes from an unknown to a huge crowd pleaser, possibily as a closer.
Lyrically, wow. Dave got a little on the raunchy side, but it works. It's a very different song with very different lyrics -- more direct than Crash or Rapunzel. I just think it's rockin' overall and will be in concert to a huge degree.

I hate this song. And, I have been very positive about the entire album, but this song sounds like 80's trash. This was the kind of music I was moving away from when I found DMB. I'm glad its the last song, its very easy to leave out. The only thing redeeming is the outro, which I'm pretty sure is actually independent of "hunger."

"Lessard wrote the music for 'Hunger for the Great Light,' with lyrics about oral sex added by Matthews, who says, 'This is our most overt "fucking" song ever.'"
When I read that originally, I was expecting something different (dirtier) than what the lyrics ended up being! :lol Something more like Rapunzel.
But I like it.

FINALLY....i read the whole thread and at last I find someone who agrees with me. Im not sure what people are seeing in the song. In my opinion the least creative/stimulating song on the album. Lyrics are killing me. Dave's voice just doesn't seem to fit in this kind of song. However, I could see the band doing something interesting with it live....which is all that really matters to me.

Yeah, have to say I'm not really loving this song. Don't mind it. All I can think of when I hear this song is Stefan in those clips and how awful the riff sounded without the band. Hope it grows on me as I've like everything else I've heard.

I dont like that "great light.... of love" crap though
i don't either, it doesn't really fit the song (moreso the music behind it). i like the main part of the song though, sounds like something from STP's tiny music. the outro is cool, but i think would have been better with another 10 seconds or so of space between the end of the song and when it started.

After trying to hold out from listening to the last two songs, hoping i'd have the willpower to make it to tuesday, i finally caved and listened to hunger. this song just fu*king rocks. definitely a new sound for dmb, but my god, its just awesome. i completly agree with the people who see the huge live potential of this song. this could surely become a closer this summer, or in the future. my only complaint is the outro's placement. should have been a little longer after the end of the song, like some of you have said. aside from that, simply great. cheers -

Yeah, I'm hearing it in Stand Up & Steady As We Go, too. I think it has to do with the harmoics and some of the Beatles later albums. I can't quite put my finger on it.

I think it's my favorite. Haven't really paid attention to the lyrics yet, but I dig the new sound. I can't wait to hear it live!
And I've been reminded of a couple Beatles songs as well. I was too tired to think of which ones while listening for the first time at 2am after a week of hellacious finals....
How's that for a run-on sentence? Still so tired...

This clip shows yet another type DMB tried, and it's different but man I love what I'm hearing. It's so different and I'm so excited for all of the songs I've heard so far. I just love hearing something a bit different then what I've been listening to lately. And no I haven't gone to VH1, I'm not listening :)

in my opinion, Hunger is without question the worst song on the album. i do not think this because i think the band shouldn't evolve or change.
i simply think the song sounds like satan taking a shit after a night of Yeger and Krystals. :evil
when i heard Die Trying and Out of My Hands, however, methinks i heard God whispher, "You are my finest creation." :angel

I'm loving this one.
Here's what I've got for the lyrics:
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Here, you, go your dirty girl
Good God, try to love, try to
Oh God, love is alive inside you
You know who needs you
I wanna be your hunger
I wanna see you open wide
And then I'll go down for you
I wanna blow your mind
It's hiding
(?)
Not yet
To love you
You and I, such a pretty thing
Smile, smile, you know you thrill me
Crossed your heart, oh I hope to die
You know I'd love to
I wanna be your hunger
I wanna see you open wide
And then I'll go down for you
I wanna blow your mind
You and I, oh oh
(?)
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
Oh great light of love
You cause like an answer (?)
Prays, God, try to love, try to
Oh I have a little (?)
Uh oh I love you
I wanna be your hungry
I wanna see you open wide
And when I'll go down for you
I wanna blow your mind
You you hey you
You you hey
You you oh

If there's some kind of decent jam at the end of this song live, this is going to be one of the freshest, most fun songs they've written since Rapunzel and The Last Stop (I'd put Joy Ride in this category as well).

Yeah, I hear that part is Nirvana like, and the rest of the song seems Beatles like, and it is just a really suggestive tune. I don't really love it yet, but it definitely has a rock appeal. Maybe it'll sound better live or in the car.

I'm loving HFTGL .... it is such a fresh sound for DMB i feel, and it is a song that really grows on you and sticks with you after a couple of listens. Upon thinking about what this song would be like live, the first thing that came to my mind is "God, the lighting on hunger is gonna be phenomenal with the rockin' beat and funky keyboards" .... and it's about damn time DMB did an uptempo for makin' love! :hump

This is BY FAR one of the worst DMB songs ever. I mean come on...Stefan (if what I have read is true) needs to stay as far away from songwriting as possible. The obvious first thought when the guitar riff comes in is that it's some sort of Nirvana rip off, but, I wouldnt even say that, cause Nirvana was (at times) GOOD. This riff is like an 8th grader learning to play guitar...sounds like he grabbed his epiphone les paul copy, his mini-marshall stack and ran down the hallway to show his mom that he figured out what a barre chord is and that he can MAKE SONGS when he clicks it into distortion and plays those chords back to back!!!
maybe thats why Dave didnt really put forth the effort in the lyric department on this album...
...still a lot of thoughts to come with a lot more listens...
let's just PRAY they dont play this song on tour...

Stefan helped a lot on BTCS, but they were still going w/ their sound and stretching off of that...this is just a rock tune that screams "I wish I was in a garageband!!!" It's just atrocious...the song should be about a minute and a half long and be a secret song ending in a fit of laughter at themselves by the band...

Plain and simple, good song that's going to be better live and DAVE: give us back our lyrics!!! Personally, I would prefer a band's evolution to be musical, not that you can't evolve lyrically but I don't think he has. He can't write about the same things, nor would I want him to, but it's that way that he used to write that makes every song appeal to my life that I miss. Because it's definitely in hiding (I will never say gone, never). And I disagree with their take on the whole 'make people want to stand up' as a way to push lyrically simple songs. Not worth it and not a deserving enough mantra to sacrifice an entire album's worth of good lyrics in favor of chants and one liners.

not except the fact they both have "light" in their name
Did anyone miss the electric in the live version?
I didn't miss the electric at all....
But my real reason for the post is i was watching the DVD and during the part when they're talking about this song, there's a clip of Boyd soloing and then a clip of LeRoi soloing into the end of the song with many horns. WHY DIDN'T THEY LEAVE THAT IN?!? Those were awesome parts, i think they would have sounded AMAZING in the song.

Is it just me or does Out of My Hands sound a little bit like Ants Marching. This is especially suspicious because the words Hands sounds a little bit like the word Ants.
Does anyone think Out of My Hands may be a reworked Ants Marching?

Great tune, Great sound to it.... About of one man's best things; Eating out a woman...
Ding Ding Ding! Come on boys. I know some of you are WAY more musically educated then I am, but I am willing to bet that most (or good percentage of you) have experianced oral sex. That's what the songs about and I think the music picks it up perfectly. It's rough, raw, and savage: just how we like it.... um, yeah... anyway....
Granted the electric guitar isn't Hendrix, but blame that on Stefan's bass. Remember they said it was ok to play something else... seriously though let them try new things. You know they will pull it together on tour.
I still think the bring the beat back shit is FAR worse, but that's for another thread.

The more I listen to this song the more I like it. I don't play any instruments and I sing like a wet cat, but I can dance and this song lends itself well to some dirty dancing.
I also think it's cool that they took a harder riff and made it their own. Like they said in the DVD this song is a nod to songs like "smell like teen spirit" and the NIN "fuck you like an animal" song. :monkey

I agree... if DMB released an album of songs that sound like this it would be a lame... but despite the blatant tribute to the grunge era (which I love) they still make it very much their own. Dave's voice alone makes it different... this recording would never be confused with Cobain or Vedder... I like it a lot.

i really can't believe how many people dislike this song. it's by far my favorite. and live, it'll be a beast by mid July. i like the way it starts out kind of slow and builds up, if they added a big jam at the end (kind of like how they start slow with Watchtower, and then blow the roof off) i think it would work really well with this song.

Okay, so I listened to this CD non-stop for two weeks until I got completely burnt out on it and completely sick of it. Then I put it away and didn't listen to it for a couple of weeks so I could come back to it with a fresh state of mind, but yet at the same time kinda already knowing what to expect from the new stuff on this CD. And after breaking it back out my impression of alot of songs on this CD have a new, better opinion, but my opinion of this song hasn't gotten any better at all, in fact I think its gotten worse. This song is an embarrasement to the Dave Matthews Band. That guitar riff and beat sound like something that a beginner 14 year old just learned on the guitar. Not one of fucking Dave Matthews brilliant riffs. It sounds so amateur and pathetic. It's embarrasing when I have friends in the car and that song comes on they look at me like "this is your beloved Dave Matthews Band?" Ugh! The whole song, the structure, the phrasing of the lyrics, the beat! Just UGGGHH!!!!! Far and away the worst song they've ever put down on wax. And yes I am taking into consideration I Did It when I say that. This song makes me wanna :24 :24 !

Agreed. Stefan needs to stick with bass, because this song makes it abundantly clear why he never made it as a guitar player. The riff is so simple, the lyrics are just filthy, and not in a good way like Rapunzel.
