This is no where near a hip hop album. Stefan is playing more funky than other albums. As far as the lyrics, they are solid. I need to give it a listen or too, but what ever you guys think is your opinion, everyone generally seems relieved. You guys can go cry somewhere together.

Do I love the new sound as much as the old? No. But it is DMB. It sounds like they really enjoyed themselves on this one. It's full of life. It's fantastic. Thanks Dave, Stefan, Leroi, Boyd, Carter, Butch and Mark. Great job. I was scared, very scared because this band is always in my cd player. I have gotten a little better with the release of some new music from other bands but these guys are always within a arms reach for when I get bored of Jack Johnson or the new NIN cd :hump Keep up the good work guys and I can't wait to see you front and center 5th row in VA Beach.

this is not the band that i love. this is a pop band.
its a good album compared to other albums out there but compared with real music, ie older DMB, this album is shit.

Give it a chance, they're studio tracks. Take any song except Dreaming Tree and my guess is 99% of the fan base prefers the live versions. If you hate it when they play it then so be it but I'm gonna wait before I solidify my opinion either way. DMB is a tour band, not a studio band. Their studio work has never been on par with their on stage ability.

I am sorry... I know the band has issues with him, and I didn't care too much for the his mixing abilities, but I loved Steve Lillywhite producing. Something about him that the band played DMB music... they didn't need... "influences" from other producers. Dave himself said that BTCS was the best writting he thinks he has ever done. I would have to agree.. that album has such an organic feel to it. It was them... playing with each other, not fitting in around a grove that a Hip-Hop producers says will be a "grovvy lick" I love all DMB music, and will support them always... but so far.. I am unhappy with the sound and style they went with.... just my two cents

im sick of this naive, blind worship of any and everything that the band does.
this album, as i "prematurely" assumed when i heard the 45 second clips is, without question, going to be the worst album dmb has released.
i almost wish i hadn't listened to all of the songs, because they make me angry. this is not the dmb that i have grown to admire and love over the past 15 or so years. this is some pop-ified trash that undermines the lyrical, technical, and all around musical ability of the band.

Stand Up will get some nice jamming and could be a pretty cool live experience. Just imagine the entire venue clapping along at the end yelling Stand Up. If the song is done right, this could really become a crowd favorite.
From jazzfest, Dave just has to work on the vocals
DMBfan41
05-03-2005, 06:37 PM
I hope they play the American Baby Intro. It kinda reminds me of the intro to Metallica's "One".
I could really see the lights off at the venue. Leroi and Boyd playing a really nice piece of soft music. Then Boyd kicks in with the beginning of American Baby. The lights slowly come back on and Dave starts singing the vocals. Crowd having a good time. And of course the end will be the best as the entire band just jams the hell out of it. This song will be hot!

Smooth Rider is a very bluesy song. Bluesy = guitars. I think this song could've used a special guest.
But, for the summer. I think this song can become very well done with say Warren Haynes.
On the album, its so-so. I think it'll be saved for the special guests, kinda like Cortez The Killer

WOW. Amazing album, so far, im four tracks in. Im very impressed.
Its a whole new level at this point. They have diversified and reached that next level. Musically at least.
Lyrically, like I had feared, it is not up to that Dave standard. At least this far into the album.

Everybody Wake Up, I ike the album version. Should be interesting to hear live. I think it'll be a song that the band will enjoy playing. I could see some nice Boyd & Carter solos, also could be a hot song with a special guest really kickin in the electric guitar at the end. Could be a fun song

Iam definitely biased - I love everything DMB does. With that said, I think Batson got way in over his head producing this band. To make a great album w/ DMB you have to be able to blend this unique grouping of instruments together and Batson just doesn't have that much skill. Also, why do I hear a fucking DRUM MACHINE? Carter is the greatest percussionist who walks this earth. How can you replace his natural rhythm with a goddamn drum machine? At least the producer can't fuck up a live show.

ok..."maybe" you actually like this album, which is fine with me, but i know for a fact that there are TONS of dave fans that post comments in these threads that like anything with the name Dave Matthews Band attatched to it. i LOOOOOOOOOOOVE dmb, but that doesn't mean i am required to like everything the band does to be a true fan.
if somebody truly likes the album, then i am not going to disrespect them for it, but i get the impression that there are a lot of people who like the album simply because it is a dmb album...and God forbid you dislike something dmb does.
I am happy for those that do like this album, but I really don't like it 1 bit.
I am extremely disappointed. Hopefully they will be a bit truer to themselves in the future (ie. recording the songs they wrote this summer that sound like a NATURAL evolution for the band).
Hopefully the new COLDPLAY album will be better than this.

I'm sure there are people like that, they just like it cause its DMB. No one says that you have to like it.
I just think that people that don't like it just stop comparing into the DMB of the 90's. Bands move on, bands change their style. They like to do different things because if you stick to the same thing every album, it gets tiresome.
If you don't respect the band for moving on and making something brand new like Stand Up, then you are not a true fan.
You don't have to like it, but atleast respect the band. They might not be pleasing you with their change, but they ARE pleasing a lot more people

I am not making this comment for you, but apparently the band feels THEY ARE BEING TRUE TO THEMSELVES, and what they want to do, not what you want them to sound like.Everyone keeps making these comments that the band isnt being true, or its not DMB anymore, you can argue with me all you want but it is the same group of guys putting out music, just not what some fans want to hear, just not what some fans are a custom to, but hate to break it to some of the fans that dont like the album, this is what they want, this is what they enjoyed doing. All bands change for better or worse, I dont have an opinion yet on Stand up, but I do realize that these songs are not like the classics we have come to love, but it is what makes the band happy. I am going to give a lot more thought on this album, I like some things, dont like others, but very rarely do bands make an album from beginning to end that everyone loves. UTTAD was a Gem, so was Crash, and so was BTCS. Some of these songs will eventually evolve into some great live material. Sometimes bands need to do different things to stay together and continue to make music. I have been a fan for a very long time, those songs I have come to love will always keep me interested in this band, I have dedicated plenty of time into this band, and will continue to do so. Whether I eventually like this album or not. I will listen, for one day we will hear something of the past, but right now I am content with some of this material. I guess in time we will find out.

You are right. They are being true to themselves. I just get dissapointed when I hear the great songs they wrote all by themselves over the summer and then I hear hear songs that are entirely different in every way that were written with the help of a producer. Why do they do this to us? This is twice now.
The DMB that I like is the pure DMB that was responsible for Crazy Easy, Hello Again, Sugar Will, Joy Ride, and Good Good Time.
That is what I want to hear. That is why I pre-ordered the album (I admit a stupid thing to do befor hearing what the track list was).
I support the band doing whatever the hell they want to do. If they want to make 10 more albums like STAND UP then they should, but if they do, I won't like it. I find it boring. I will listen to their older albums and be perfectly happy.
That is my opinion.

Most of us consider DMB our favorite band and we're complaining about an album we all just heard for the first time.... amazing! Just enjoy it for waht it is... DMB's newest work! Honestly, even if it isn't DMB at their best it's still better than 95% of the albums released lately. Though I'll admit it makes me happier I saw all the 'new' songs last tour in case the go the way of JTR or Dreaming Tree and become 'rarities!
Hell even Dylan got bashed by his 'old' fans when he went electric but the man still put out some amazing music. DMB is bound to get some flak but I say refrain on judgement until you hit up your first show!

I think calling into question someone's reason for liking the album is just ridiculous. If you blindly follow the band, sucks for you, but cool if you dig it. I definitely don't like alot of what the band does, but overall I really like this album. I think the boy-band shit on Old Dirt Road is just corny. I think the segue from Hello Again into LB is way too abrupt, and that Hello Again should be longer. I can't believe they scrapped Crazy-Easy or Joyride for You Might Die Trying (which sucks, imo).
But I love the album otherwise. I think alot of the songs are just really good, well written tunes. If you consider this "pop," then I guess every album Phish made since Hoist was pop, and that shit was great. Or Pearl Jam for that matter. I think there's a big different between pop and "top 40" (i.e. Britney, Beyonce, J. Lo, various boy bands, Nickelback, etc). Maroon 5's "Songs About Jane" is pop, and it's awesome. Same with Gavin DeGraw's "Chariot." But would I even think to classify them in the teenie-bopper diva/boy band crowd? Not a chance. That's not what all pop music is about, and if you wanna call this pop, cool, but just because it's catchy and well written doesn't mean that (a) it's going to sound anything like this live, or (b) it's inherently bad.

I was very skeptical in January when I saw the first video clip with the Everybody Wake Up sample. It sounded so stale and mechanical, it almost depressed me.
Then came news that Hello Again was the only 04 song to make the cut. Further skepticism.
But Batson has put so much energy back into this band, and this album has really floored me. The production is damn near impeccable, and while I feel without much doubt these songs will be even better live, this is such a great album in every way. The ordering of the tracks, the flow, the diversity, just everything.
This is exciting to listen to, and not since BTCS will fans have to dig around tracks for those little things that make the songs truly special.

you know what though i think it would be alot easier to get someone hooked on the band witha song like everybody wake up than hearing seek up off of remember two things for the first time
DMB has created a certain shock factor to us hardcore fans with this album some of us love it some eh some hate it and think its a poppy piece of junk
i dont agree with people likening it to pop and hip hop and saying dmb is becoming like everyone else...hell no, how, just the fact they came up with such a diverse album disproves this theory, they sacraficed lyrics a little bit here for a more uptempo fun feel, and im fine with that. my reasoning being while busted stuff has some great music, look what's happened to it only a few song are played off of it and it honestly isnt the most listenable album.
good stuff, its keeping me hooked on this band, gonna be a fun summer, hopefullly we dont have to wait three years for a new album, so we keep getting music from these guys

I can't believe they scrapped Crazy-Easy or Joyride for You Might Die Trying (which sucks, imo).
.
Does it remind you of boy bands? It reminds me more of Motown, which I think is why I like it.
I love You Might Die Trying but I would rather have had a crisp Crazy Easy or Joy Ride in place of American Baby...

Haha, it does remind me of boy bands. I see where you're coming from, but for me the way the vocals are seem like 5 guys around thousands of screaming teenie boppers. That's just me tho, I definitely see where it could be motown, and I'm guessing that was what the band was going for. And yeah, Joyride I could take or leave in general (good song, nothing too special), but I was really really digging Crazy Easy last summer and it's a shame that it seems to have just been scrapped.

This is no where near a hip hop album. Stefan is playing more funky than other albums. As far as the lyrics, they are solid. I need to give it a listen or too, but what ever you guys think is your opinion, everyone generally seems relieved. You guys can go cry somewhere together.
thanks for giving me the green light on crying somewhere. :rolleyes
this album, at least the first 8 songs, which is as far as I've gotten, is so elementary sounding.
eh...lyrics are ok. matter of fact, here's the song formula for the first three songs:
dave is horny > dave comes up with a clever cliche to describe his feelings for a girl > dave describes what he wants to do to a girl > [insert machine gun noises and strings]

first 3 songs.
as for the top three....Rapunzel is good because the music transcends the lyrics. Stay is OK. Crush is good because it sounds very cool and jazzy.
these news songs have no "umph!" to em. they all sound very dispondant and just thrown to together.

I disagree. I feel like you can break DMB into two sets of albums; new DMB and old DMB. People are always going to be partial to the older stuff b/c thats what got them hooked on the band, but that shouldnt take away from the new stuff.
I'd rank the stuff like this.
old DMB
1. BTCS
2. Crash
3. UTTAD
new DMB (i could see switching BS and SU here)
1. Stand Up
2. Busted Stuff
3. Everyday
It depends which DMB sound you are trying to hear. If you want new DMB I'd say the first thing I'd grab would either be SU or BS depending on what kind of mood I was in. Busted Stuff is a more mellow and slightly depressing CD. Stand Up is more upbeat and after just a few listens I'm starting to like it alot and I've been listening since Crash came out.
Edit: Personally from what I've heard if I wanted to get someone new into DMB and they wanted to hear some of their newer stuff I'd give them Stand Up before Busted Stuff. Busted Stuff has great songs but was poorly produced IMO.

The only complaint I have so far is that there were some parts on the videos on the official Stand Up site that didnt seem to make the album. One was in part 3 when Dave is just wailing to this cool groove and Mark is dancing and pumping his fist during daves wailing. Boyds talking during it so its kind of hard to hear. And of course the jam they were playing at the end of part 4, that rocked and its not on the album :( Anyone else notice this?

Busted Stuff isn't "new DMB". It was basically all written before Everyday. I think if DMB had stuck to their normal formula this album, we would actually have something to rival BTCS, Crash, and UTTAD. It seems like they had a great attitude going into this one.
I think its great they want to branch out and be progressive, but these new songs can't come close to comparing to the older songs. It's like DMB needs to stop trying to be like Radiohead (progressive, all CD's are different sounding except Kid A and Amnesiac) and be more like Pearl Jam (still sound mostly like they did in the beginning, and are still awesome).

I like the sound of the new album. Musical interests evolve, both for the band and the fan. If every album DMB did sounded like UTTAD or BTCS we would be numb from it all. I like the fact that the band can try, and do new things. Will everyone like it, no. Did everyone like Everyday, no. But the band tried to keep it fresh, from their perspective. If you ask anyone who is not a DMB fan, my sister in law for example, they say all DMB stuff "sounds the same". Do we really want that? Are our musical tastebuds that dead that we refuse anything that is not "cookie cutter"?
And another note. People keep saying it sounds like everything that is already out there. Keep in mind that DMB has had a musical influence over the industry for a while now. So maybe, in some way, everything out there sounds like DMB and not the other way around.

I agree with this post. They don't need influencing from other producers. Lillywhite and the band seemed to mesh so well and it's like he didn't interfer with what DMB wanted to do. Then here comes Mark Batson trying to change everything and make it more funky and yes I do think there is a hip hop sound to some of the songs. It's in the drumbeat. And whats with everyone singing or daves voice sounding synthosized in some of the songs? Does anyone else notice that?
I support them and will give this album a shot - I will listen over and over because listening one or 2 times doesn't mean I've made my decision yet. It's just gonna take time. I can definitely say it's not worse than Everday, but I'm still very disapointed.

What I don't understand is people saying things like "I am sick of blind worship" and "This is not DMB." I don't think the boys hired other people to come in and make this album did they? This IS DMB NOW. If you don't like it, what can I say-don't spend anymore money, time or energy on them. No one said you have to be a DMB fan forever. I'm sure they'll miss you, but shit happens. You must be the types of people who ditch their friends if they get married or have children or get a new job then, eh? Sorry for you...
If following DMB on their musical journey, where ever it goes, is blind faith, then paint me purple and call me blind. I love EVERYTHING about this band. They are my favorite 5 1/2 people that I don't know personally. If they say "This is how we sound/feel now" I say "Great guys! Thanks for sharing! Thanks for still coming to work after 15 years!" I am still going to rock out with them, I am still going to travel this big beautiful country to see them, I am still going to have great times, and I am definately not going to pout and bitch about how I want DMB to sound the way they always do... That would be dull, dull, dull.
All of ya'll who want the DMB of yore, when they were 25 and drugged up and depressed, pop in Red Rocks and go jerk off. I'm going to continue to have the time of my life in 2005 with the best band in the world.

Anyone has the right to dislike the album or what they're doing musically at this point in their career and STILL REMAIN A FAN. It doesn't mean we're not gonna buy the cd, stop listening and drop the band like they never existed. I think those who DO have HIGH expections for the band are the ones who are just a little more passionate than those who just happen to like every last thing they put out. There really is no right or wrong to liking or disliking a certain album or something they do - it's a matter of taste or preference. And when they do something different, fans are going to be critical and not everyone is gonna jump on the bandwagon. But putting your opinion in words such as "types of people who ditch their friends if they get married..." - well thats just.......can't find the words so I'll use an icon: :twak .

At the begining of my post I believe I said I was talking about the statements "I'm sick of blind worship" and "This is not DMB." And I believe the point was, If you feel that way (those statements)- Don't invest money and time. And if you continue to, don't bitch. There has been plenty of bitching regarding just that. Also IMO if you don't like the music, then, you are not a fan of modern DMB plain and simple. What makes a fan a fan is appreciation of the thing itself, not the ability to criticize it. People who think the CD sucks are not fans of the DMB that exists today. How can anyone say I love DMB, but not since BTCS? Look at how much has happenend since then?? At that point you say I used to really love DMB.

I understand the point you were making but I just don't agree with it. And I never said I didn't like anything since BTCS. I do think if someone is gonna bitch about every single thing the band has done since then, then ya - they probably aren't fans and I don't know why they're still listening. But I'm not one of those people. I loved the new stuff over the summer. Busted Stuff was a good album - not quite the original Lillywhites, but still some good stuff came from that album. And I'm all for the band being different with their albums. But IMO, I just don't like the new approach they took with this album or producer. It's obvious they had fun - and thats great. But personally I prefer the new music they played on the 2004 tour. If you look at Hello Again live vs the studio album..it's cut to shreads. I just think that song, and the entire album, is overproduced. And it's good not to like everything they do or put out because that would mean I am just a follower. I'm more of the leader type.... :ggoat :)

I have been a DMB fan since UTTAD-30 shows with 7 coming this summer. My life has revolved around the Dave Matthews Band since early high school...meaning checking Ants/Nancies/Warehouse the second I wake up, not missing an ounce of news all day, catching every single tv appearance they have, and falling asleep to them at night. I've had my share of moments with the band: 6/11/01 Two Step at Giants, James Brown at MSG, a good amount of Warehouse openers, and Dave and Stefan acknowleding my sign in Camden last year. It seems they can't let me down. So I go to vh1 and listen to all the tracks (after having each clip on repeat for 10 hours a day). Honestly, I am happy. It just furthers the thought that when someone asks me "What kind of music is DMB?", I can say there is NO WAY to describe them. Each song had me bouncing and most gave me chills. I was happy (but Smooth Rider is still a little iffy for me). Then I came to the boards, and saw many comments saying "y'all are just in a trance and you just love everything the band does" or "you have a blind idoilzation and can't realize Stand Up is $hit". So it got me thinking, is this true? Do I just not want to admit that Stand Up is a failure? So I took another listen. The verdict...I loved it even more. Every kid in my suite (I go to college) knows I am obsessed with this band, and they knew when vh1 was streaming the album because I went nuts. After this next listen, I sat 3 of them down to listen because of how impressed I was. I knew the band wanted a different sound, and they succeeded. I sat 'em down to hear Hunger for the Great Light first because I feel that shows the biggest change in the band. I think the band has to a get chance to bring these songs on the road before this album is negatively judged. Louisiana Bayou-already strong live from Jazzfest and could only get better. Stand Up-they were definitely a tiny bit confused in their first performance, but this month is a month of practice for them. Anyway, all the songs of the album...imagine them pulling that off live? You Might Die Trying, Everybody Wake Up...seeing those successfully played, whether you like the album or not, would be an amazing sight. Just listen to the intro to HFTGL and put yourself at the Gorge, or SPAC, or the Meadows, experiencing it live. The array of music we will hear this summer is nuts. We could hear Lie In Our Graves and then Old Dirt Hill...Rapunzel, followed by Stolen Away. Leroi and Boyd go nuts on this album, and Stefan sounds better than ever. Sorry this message is all over the place. I just dunno how to get across how good a job these boys did with Mark and their hope for a new sound. Of course, there are some negatives. Carter could of definitely been a bigger part of the album. He had many chances to shine, including on Hello Again (but we know it doesn't matter cuz we already know what he does live). The other negative, the lyrics. Dave has definitely changed his style. He is more straight forward. I personally loved the hidden meanings through his lyrics (see 41, Typical Situation, etc.), and now we're listening to lines like "Your top was untied, and I thought how nice it would be to follow the sweat down your spine." That, of course, is from Dreamgirl, which may actually be a successful single. We know this band has not left its roots for good. Through tracks like Out of My Hands and Louisiana Bayou, we should know there is nothing to worry about...especially when those tracks are sharing the same CD as the other 11. I feel this album, right now, is satisfying me more than Busted Stuff and Everyday, and in time, who knows? I'll be at Roseland on the 9th...and I know the show will be one of the best I've experienced. Hope to see some of you there. :)

while you can still edit it, dawarehouse, do you mind separating that into paragraphs so folks can read it?

Thanks to the band & Batson!
I've been a fan since '94, and have been to many shows. My initial reaction to this album is a good one. I need to listen a bit more, but I like the new sound. Lousiana Bayou and Old Dirt Hill are highlights for me (Yeah I know, that boy band singing stuff is a little creepy, but I like that song)
I am anxious to hear this live. I rarely listen to their studio albums anymore, I really dig the live stuff. It wasn't until I heard Red Rocks that I was so amazed and blown away that I needed to go see them live. I've been hooked ever since.
I see a lot of posts about the lack of Carter. I noticed that as well. But I just listened to DDTW from BTCS, and then the live version from Central Park. Apples & Oranges...In the studio version a very simple beat is carried through with the occasional slow tom roll. Live...Carter owns this song...this song has so much more power to it. The band overall seems to have a more upbeat powerful sound, but Carter is the driving force there.
What about Hello Again, nice presence of Carter on the studio cut; but the live version I heard from that Best Buy link the other day...wow!! Carter again just powers through this song and even breaks it down with a solo. I heard this one last year earlier in the tour at blossom, but it sounded nothing like that clip i heard. Can't wait to see this one this summer.
Just a couple of examples, but I guess I'm not too worried about the lack of Carter. Most of these songs on Stand Up seem to have simple beats, but I highly doubt they will replace Carter and his kit with a DJ and a drum machine. I see a lot of potential.
And to end my little $0.02, I'm just happy the band is not afraid to take a new direction. I think this new album is one of many to come in the future, I don't think they built a custom, mansion size studio just to make Stand Up.
Imagine what they were feeling back when they were recording the lillywhite sessions and they felt stuck, the studio was just full of bad emotions, they didn't want to be there...and imagine what they feel now. It seems they are excited and happy to be making new music as a band. Keep it coming boys!!!

Excellent post, I agree with on that I really fell in love with this band when I heard Red Rocks. I loved UTTAD and then Red Rocks really hooked me, but the point where I found out how much I enjoyed this band was at my first concert at Alpine on 8-31-02. I agree with about everything in your post and it was well said, and I do understand that people do not enjoy this album and that is there opinion and I respect that, but I personally enjoy this album and I think it may be something great and it made be something that leads to even better albums in the future. You were right, the studio wasn't made for just one album in my mind.

Did you ever hear the first live #41?
If you're talking about the Duke version, it's funky as all HELL. :thumbsup Point well made if indeed that was the point you were trying to make!

After seeing the band last night at Roseland and just popping in the CD for the first time - the band has never sounded better. Stand Up is an album full of songs that are just going to rip live.
