Ok, I've been having a hell of time making a thread as AM.org is in the process of crashing, but I'll try it again
I've transcribed all of the lyrics to the best accuracy possible, if you see mistakes feel free to point them out, there are some I was unsure of:
Dream Girl
===============================
I would dig a hole all the way to china
Unless of course i was there
and I'd dig my way home
If by diggin I could steal
the wind from the sails of the greedy men who rule the world
still you're my best friend
and after a good good drunk
you and me wake up and make love
after a deep sleep
where I was dreamin, where I was dreamin
of a dream girl
dream girl
dream girl
I was feelin like a creep as I watched you asleep
face down in the grass on a park in the middle of a hot afternoon
your top was untied and I thought how nice it would be to follow the sweat down your spine.
you're my best friend
and after a good good drunk
you and me wake up and make love
after a deep sleep
where I was dreamin, where I was dreamin
of a dream girl
dream girl
dream girl
Caught by a wave my back to the ocean
Knocks me off my feet and
just as I find my footing
here you come again
dream girl
oh dream girl
I saw a dream girl
(unclear lyrics until fade)
deep end, yea the deep end?

Old Dirt Hill
============================
Bring that beat back to me again
(Go on take me back, give me that, can't catch me, can't catch me??)
Bring that beat back to me again
Ride my bike down the old dirt hill
First time without my training wheels
First time I kissed you I lost my legs
bring that beat back to me again
screamin, shouting loud of innoncence
days when all we do won't never end
Bring that beat back to me again
(Go on take me back, give me that, can't catch me, can't catch me??)
Bring that beat back to me again
Smoking under the railroad bridge
I used to ride my bike down that old dirt hill
the first time I kissed you I lost my legs
Bring that beat back to me again
Screamin, shouting loud of innocence
days when all we do won't never end
screamin down that old dirt hill
bring that beat back to me again
thats when the days I remember
seem so far away
know its just a kiss, thats what i miss
its just a kiss, thats what i miss
take me back
take me back
to that beat again
smokin under the railroad bridge
bring that beat back to me again
bring that beat back to me again
bring that beat back to me again
the first time all we good good friends
bring that beat back to me again
(repeat until fade)

Stand Up
==============================
Stand Up etc
I woke up to the angels singin in my head
you look so good naked next to me
as an angel in my head
Stand Up etc
I feel like a drug
is cooking in my veins
Till I'm so out of my mind
i'll shoot you up again
Stand Up etc
feel like smoke and fire is burning in us all
you drop me in the water
lift me up and save my soul
Stand Up etc
(clapping)

American Baby
===========================
If these walls came crumbling down,
Fell so hard to make us lose our faith,
From what’s left you’d figure it out,
Still make lemonade taste like a sunny day,
Stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay, American baby
American baby,
Nobody’s laughing now,
Gods grace lost and the devil is proud,
But I’ve been walking for a thousand miles,
One last time I could see you smile,
I, I, hold, hold on to you,
You bring me hope,
I’ll see you soon,
And if I don’t see you,
I’m afraid we’ve lost the way
Stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay, American baby
American baby (2x)
I hold on, to you, you lift me up
And always will,
I see you in life,
Hope I don’t get left behind,
I, I, hold, hold on to you,
You bring me hope,
I’ll see you soon,
And if I don’t see you,
I’m afraid we’ve lost the way
Stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay, American baby,
I hope you stay, beautiful baby,
I hope you stay, American baby,
American baby (2x)
Stay, American baby
Beautiful,
Nobody’s laughing now,
Cause you could always make me laugh out loud,
Stay, American baby
American baby,
Stay, American baby,
American baby

Smooth Rider
=======================
Last night, no way
I was gonna be left hungry
then your daddy caught you sneakin out your bed
its just a game I play
its just unrolled that way
no thanks sweet baby
i'm messin with your head
i'm a smooth rider
you know I'll just keep movin on
don't know why i like to carry on
the way I do
its just i'm in love with you
if you see me out there runnin
and you hear the sherrif comin
your daddy's crazy with that gun in his hand
if you know they comin for me
and you know they runnin for me
you know my love won't let them keep me away

Everybody Wake Up
==========================
everybody wake up
if you livin with your eyes closed
see the man with the bomb in his hand
everybody wake up
oh baby its not easy sometimes
we build these walls and then hide behind them
seems an odd way to try to make thigns right
i feel like i'm crazy sometimes
our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
and the believers stand behind him and smile
everybody wake up
if you livin with your eyes closed
see the man with the bomb in his hand
everybody wake up
i remember the words of the misguided fool
do unto others as you'd have them do
not an eye for an eye is the golden ruld
just leaves a room full of blind men
our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
and the believers stand behind him and smile
as the day lights up with fire
everybody wake up
everybody wake up
everybody wake up
if you livin with your eyes closed
see the man with the bomb in his hand

Out of My Hands
========================
Out on the ledge
I don't feel safe
and I stayed, lookin down you
Its out of my hands for now
Its out of my hands for now
I can't just walk away
Be nice to walk away
but I don't feel safe
get away
all the way up here
its out of my hands for now
its out of my hands for now
oh it is
down from here
down from here
listen
start to feel insane
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
as the day lights up with fire
let me in
let me in
i'll stop to feel like i'm crazy
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
watch the day as it lights up with fire
lookin down from here
its out of my hands for now
out on my window ledge
its out of my hands for now
so let me in.
let me in.

Stolen Away
======================
Hello again
seems like forever between now and then
you look the same
i mean you look different but you haven't changed
funny to think how the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
stole me away
the first time i saw you did me that way
what should I say
i saw you laughin and I was afraid
i'd get in the way
i did not think I would see you again
so how have you been
do you remember everything
funny how i think the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
stole me away
the first time i saw you did me that way
what should I say
i saw you there dancing
but i was afriad i might get in the way
i did not think i would see you again
funny to think how the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
funny the feeling when fallin in love?
stole me away
the first time I saw you you did me that way
what should I say
I saw you there dancing i was afraid
i might get in the way
never thought I would see you again
how've you been
watchin the years as they trickle away
its everything
how the the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
steal me away
its like the first time i saw you
you'd do me that way
what should I say
I see you there standing and I am afraid
i might get in the way
i never thought I would see you again
how've you been
do you remember i mean everything
you steal me away
like the first time i saw you
you'd do me that way
what can i say
thats you're here standing
and I am afraid I might get in your way

Steady As We Go
==============================
I walk halfway around the world
just to sit down by your side
I would do most anything girl to be the apple of your eye
but troubles they may come and go
but good times they're gold
and if the road gets rocky girl
just steady as we go
any place you wanna go
know i'll be next to yo
treasure babe your lookin for
i'll search the whole world through
but troubles they may come and go
but troubles they're the gold
and if the road gets rocky girl
just steady as we go
when the storm comes
shelter me
and don't say a word
and you know exactly what I mean
and the darkest time
shine on me
set me free
and keep me steady as we go
so if your heart rings dry my love
I will fill your cup
and if your load gets heavy girl
I will life you up
but troubles they may come and go
but good times be the gold
so if the road gets rocky girl
just steady as we go
shine shine on me

You Might Die Trying
========================
To change the world
start with one step
however small
first step is hardest of all
once you get your gate
you'll be walking tall
you said you never did
cuz you might die trying
cuz you might die trying
cuz you
if you close your eyes
cause the house is on fire
and think you couldn't move
until the fire dies
the things you never did
cuz you might die trying
cuz you might die trying
but be as good as dead
cuz you might die trying
cuz you might die trying
if you give
you begin to live
if you give
you begin to live
you'd get the world
if you give
you might die tryin
you might die trying
you might die trying
the things you never did
cuz you might die trying
you'd be as good as dead

Louisiana Bayou
(taken from Jazzfest's live version because I'm lazy, I'm pretty sure they are the same)
===========================
Oh no mama cried devil done do-si-do.
Two young boys lying there by the side of the road
The coins in their eyes represent the money they owed
No judge or jury gonna hear the story told
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Sweet girl ???
Brother can't watch him beat that girl down again
Late one night cookin' up with a couple-a friends
Swears his daddy never gonna see another day
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
No no mama cried devil done do-si-do
Two young boys lying there by side of the road
Shame shame
Oh it's a shame to lose your way running wild
Oh it's a shame to lose the light that shines on you
Oh it's a shame to lose your way as a child
Oh it's a shame
You'll ??? but you ain't got to go
Sold your soul just trying to get overload
Empty pocket never forgive 'em yours
Judge or jury never gonna hear the story told
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Mama cried devil done do-si-do
Two young boys lying there by the side of the road
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou
Trying to play with the king
Trying to play with the king
Same old story again
Down by the bayou....
Oh it's a shame to lose your way running wild
Oh it's a shame to lose the light that shines on you
Oh it's a shame to lose your way as a child
Oh it's a shame

honestly, while I was writing some of these lyrics, I had to stop and ask myself if the lyric really was what I thought it was. Some of these are pretty bad. I think the worst of the entire album is
I would dig a hole all the way to china
Unless of course i was there
and I'd dig my way home

Thanks. Actually, I was able to do it in just the same amound of time it took to listen to the album once through.
It must be weird to see and read all the lyrics before actually hearing any of the songs. Any thoughts on the songs just based on what you are reading?

Look at WWYS, or Satellite, or even Stay. Dave's lyrics have always been hit or miss. Some Devil proved that he can still write great lyrics, they just wanted to focus on the music for this album, and I'm fine with that. Not every song can have deep, fulfilling lyrics.

Very true.
The band clearly focused on the musics more than the lyrics while in the studio. The best lyrics Dave ever wrote were never written in the studio.

Ya know, whilest transcribing, I thoght that might be the best line on the album. So i've decided that Dreamgirl has both the worst lyric and best lyric at the same time.

Ok, I'm working on a pretty long winded thesis that could develop even more over the next week I think, But I wanted to see what everyone thought of the idea.
I'm starting to think that perhaps we are giving these lyrics a lot less credit. It seems as if the entire album almost spells out an entire theme and continuous story to it. There is almost a complete character arc if you will that develops a story thoughtout the entire album. If you see what I'm talking about, it may be considered almost "brilliant" rather than cheesy lyrics.
Dreamgirl opens with a very optimistic youthful love idea. Followed by Old Dirt Hill, reminiscant of the good time spent as a child. Two optimistic, nostalgic tracks to start off the album. Then comes Stand Up, seemingly about drug use, and the beginning of the end. American Baby clearly is about trying to get back to what made America itself, almost crying to go back to the innoncent love and "hanging out under the railroad tracks" mentioned in Old Dirt Hill. But the War has ruined this. Smooth Rider seems out of placeif this idea is true, but also may seem kind of dark and perverse. Everybody wake up is clearly anti-bush, anti-war, which fits after a song like American Baby. Things have turned downhill for America in the last couple years, and so, Out Of My Hands follows, with its blatant suicidal overtones, even echoing the exact lyrics of the anti-bush Everybody Wake Up. From suicide to Murder, comes the duo of Hello Again and LB, telling stories of murder and domestic abuse "Brother can't watch him beat that girl down again." Stolen away comes next, almost many years later and a response to Hello Again/LB, and things have changed significantly. "Hello again/seems like forever between now and then/you look the same/i mean you look different but you haven't changed." His "Dreamgirl" has come back to him, and although America and the world has changed, she is still there for him. In a world of turmoil she is what keeps him "Steady As We Go" which follows next on the track. Its also important to remember that the world can change for the better, and we all have to try. If he never tried with his Dreamgirl, he never would have gotten her. "Die Trying" echoes this idea as, "To change the world/start with one step/however small/first step is hardest of all." Then, with Hunger, the story ends in one big fuck-fest, which is life's ultimate goal and pleasure after all isn't it?
Ok, so perhaps all of that was complete Bullshit, which is what I learned how to do best on English Papers. But its at least an attempt at trying to make soemthing of these seemingly cheesy lyrics. Perhaps I'm crazy, but I'd like to think at least SOME of that is true.

When I listen to it again tomorrow I'll have to take these things into account. I know what it's like being an English student myself, it becomes second nature to bullshit! But from reading that I don't smell too much. Then again, I've only heard the album once. Keep up the good work anyway. It's good to have different perspectives on things. Especially DMB things.

Steady As We Go

If you play Stand Up (the album) while watching Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, it all will make sense.
So are you saying it can be used as an alternate soundtrack A-la Dark Side of Oz? Because that would be sweet. :lol

Out of My Hands
========================
Out on the ledge
I don't feel safe
and I stayed, lookin down you
Its out of my hands for now
Its out of my hands for now
I can't just walk away
Be nice to walk away
but I don't feel safe
get away
all the way up here
its out of my hands for now
its out of my hands for now
oh it is
down from here
down from here
listen
start to feel insane
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
as the day lights up with fire
let me in
let me in
i'll stop to feel like i'm crazy
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
watch the day as it lights up with fire
lookin down from here
its out of my hands for now
out on my window ledge
its out of my hands for now
so let me in.
let me in.
Does anyone think that this is a song from the perspective from those several people that were trapped in WTC and decided to jump instead of dying in the fire ? The repetitive verse from Everybody Wake Up lead me to this conclusion

Wow. I never thought of it that way, I've been looking at it from a perspective of simply suicide. But the connection with everybody Wake Up certainly adds a politically driven undertone, so perhaps you are onto something. Very insightful. :thumbsup

Perhaps I'm crazy, but I'd like to think at least SOME of that is true.
first off, thanks so much for the lyrics. songs mean so much more when i can read the lyrics once through while they play. secondly, there might be some stretches to think that the entire album is supposed to be just one continuous story, but you make a strong case. im gonna have to give that more thought. at the very least, it makes a strongly cohesive album, and you seem to be onto what mark was describing as a complete statement.
also, in its more literal sense, is lb basically about a boy who watched his father beat and rape his sister and then decides with his friends to kill his father. but then he and his friends (or his father, i guess?) winding getting killed by the father (or kill each other, if you follow the second thought)...
thats the only meaning i get from it, and with hello again, thats a fucking dark couple of songs to go with the suicide and drug use of "out of my hands" and "stand up"
those people saying this is just a crappy pop/rap album with no lyrics is crazy
anyways, you rock. id give you more reps but it's been too soon since the last time.

thanks for the kind words, i'm glad they were of use to you. I too am a very lyrically driven music listener, so it was the first thing I wanted to do for myself when I first heard the album.
I do think my complete story is certainly a stretch, I was just combining creative liberties with bullshitting to make an interesting argument. I doubt he actually sat down and layed it out to be in such a way. But in terms of moods of songs, and meanings, I think there is a complete arc of emotions present from start to finish.
I also think you are quite more accurate in your interpretation of LB. I just gave it a sentence worth, but I'm pretty sure you have it right.
I also think the Political Undertones on this album are too strong to ignore. I thuoght about making a seperate thread for it, but was afraid of the arguing that would ensue, so perhaps we could do it in here. I find a lot of these lyrics to be Politically motivated, if not directly in opposition to war and the presidency, but also speaking as to the dark turn that life in america has taken from what things used to be like. To dismiss anything dave writes as simply fluff would be unfair to his creative genius.

yeah, i really like political songs (well, liberal ones) if they have any substance, but im glad dave was able to write stuff that [hopefully] makes people think, and doesnt just make them nod their heads in agreement or say "fuck this guy." thats the real reason i think joy ride was left off. in 2004 a lot of people were all fired up about the war and bush and everything, and it was (and still is) a good song. but i think to put it on now would just seem whiny. this is hard for me to admit because i love the song and hate everything republican, but im glad it worked out this way. songs like ddtw and minarets and last stop make you think a little about things, and this album definitely has that. ive actually found myself softening a little after watching the american baby video and not thinking "america sucks, i want to leave, bah" the way i would feel after seeing a joy ride music video. my ramble for the night, time for bed...

That is a real good point, when 9/11 happen it was a common phase that it was our finest hour. Something to think about, even if it wasn't the band's intentions, it is up to listener to decide what the song is to them, and this fits for me.

on that note, does anyone think that EWU could be about the actual events of 9/11. i notice that on the second time through with the chorus is when the line "as the day lights up fire" makes its appearance, almost as if this song could have a double meaning, ie the first verse be from the perspective of america, a call to almost wake up to the rest of the world and not me so complacent and the second verse (maybe; this is going out on a limb) be from the perspective of the terrorists seizing the opportunity on 9/11 to make their statement to the world about how america is an arrogant and foolish nation (thus the reference to Christ in the second verse b/c america was founded on Christian principles) and then the second chorus could be the actual attack itself with the "day lights up in fire" part
again, just stirring up some discussion.

I think we can wake EWU as reffering to everything you talked about. I think it is the most politically motivated song on the album, and obviously ties in things that happened as a result of 9/11. I don't think we have to take everything quite as literally as you interpreted it, but obviously its referring to things in a post 9/11 world. If we take Out Of My Hands to be from the point of view of someone in the towers, then EWU has the ability to take on just as vivid as imagery as well, since both songs really are a continuation of each other.

Its only because it seems like we are making it that way, at least on some of the songs. Its all open to interpretation, of course, dave could have meant absolutely nothing with these lyrics and just wrote them so that the music could have lyrics, and we are the ones making something of it. Its just, at first glance, the lyrics seemed lame, so I was trying to justify what Dave wrote.

Wow, after listening to the preview on VH1 I have to say that alot of the songs are good musicaly, but the lyrics with a few exceptions absolutely blow. Let's face it, Stand Up Sucks and escpecially the song. The weakest lyrics I've heard in a Dave Song yet. I feel like the difference between the Everyday and Stand Up albums is that the lyrics for the Everyday album were for the most part good (There are exceptions of course I Did It is an example) while the music really sucked. This time on Stand Up, after listening to the album I must say that even though a lot of the music is really different, it seems somewhat complex and I was very impressed at times. But, I'm sorry Dave, this was not your best effort from a lyrical stand point. Some of your lyrical work on other albums is nothing short of genius and amazing but the lyrics for the songs on Stand Up for the most part suck and do nothing for me. Now, take a song like Sugar Will, even though it's another love it or hate it song, I think everyone will agree that the way the lyrics evolved for not only Sugar Will but for some of the other Summer songs in 2004 and lets not forget 2000 was amazing. I don't know what other people think in relation to all of this and at times I honestly don't know what to think, but it just seems like with the exception of a hand full of songs (You Never Know, What You Are, Joyride, Sugar Will, Hello Again) we, as fans of the Dave Matthews Band havn't had any new material to get really excited about since the Lillywhite Sessions, which I might add would have in my opinion there greatest album of all time if they would have let Lillywhite finish it. Go take a listen to it again if you havn't heard it in awhile and you might notice how amazing the music and lyrics are on all of those songs. I wrote a lot and I hope someone else takes time to respond if they agree with me or not. Let me have it!

First of all, mad props for all those lyrics. Here's some flare for ya. You da the man. :thumbsup Second of all...I agree with your theory, or maybe its just because I'm so blinded by my admiration for Dave as a songwriter, but as we all know he's such an ambigious song writer I find it extremely hard to believe that all of the sudden after all these years of writing these mind blowing lyrics that actually make you use your brain and imagintion a little bit that he's "dumbed down" his song writing. JMHO.

Nice work on the lyrics dude.
I think the one line in Hunger tho is "Good God, try to love, try to fuck" and we got the censored version on the VH1 stream. It kinda sounds like one of those MTV type bleeps where they just play the word backwords or whatever.

some pigs get fined for being too dirty, and if a pig were to have a collection of fines to pay, he could select the nicest one of his fines and attempt to fashion it into clothing of some sort. some people would not believe a pig would do such a thing, but some people would believe it. and it would be silly, so they would smile. hence, you would see the pig dressed in his finest fine, and all the believers stand behind him and smile.

the stone
By: Dave Matthews Band
I've this creeping
Suspicion that things here are not as they seem
Reassure me
Why do I feel as if I'm in too deep
Now I've been praying
For some way to show them I'm not what they see
Yes, I have done wrong
But what I did I thought needed be done
I swear
Oh unholy day
If I leave now I might get away
Oh, but this weighs on me
As heavy as stone and as blue as I go
I was just wondering if you'd come along
Hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone
I'm a long way
From that fool's mistake and now forever pay
No, run
I will run and I'll be okay
I was just wondering if you'd come along
Hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I will go alone
Long way
Bury the past for I don't want to pay
Oh, how I wish this
To turn back the clock and do over again
Now I was just wondering if you'd come along
Hold up my head when my head won't hold on
I'll do the same if the same's what you want
But if not I'll go
I'll go alone
I need so
To stay in your arms, see you smile, hold you close
And now it weighs on me
As heavy as stone and a bone chilling cold
I was just wondering if you'd come along
Tell me you will
Dave ....what happened????

I think by nature, these songs are upbeat, and its hard to write deep thought provoking upbeat lyrics, because they will always come out sounding cheesy and corny. If you want dark and depressing, you get the beauty that is "The Stone." The most lyrically impressive song on SU is Out Of My Hands, and look at how dark that one is.

Out of My Hands
========================
Out on the ledge
I don't feel safe
and I stayed, lookin down you
Its out of my hands for now
Its out of my hands for now
I can't just walk away
Be nice to walk away
but I don't feel safe
get away
all the way up here
its out of my hands for now
its out of my hands for now
oh it is
down from here
down from here
listen
start to feel insane
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
as the day lights up with fire
let me in
let me in
i'll stop to feel like i'm crazy
betrayed
out on my window ledge
now our finest hour arrives
see the pig dressed in his finest fine
all the believers stand behind him and smile
watch the day as it lights up with fire
lookin down from here
its out of my hands for now
out on my window ledge
its out of my hands for now
so let me in.
let me in.

i like the 9/11 interpretation and it def could work but i think daves intention were simply him trying to deal with Bush winning the election
out of my hand for now... basically the next four years
i cant just walk away, itd be nice to walk away... but as we know we have to stay american
and the repeat of lyrics from everybody wake up but sound much more depressing the second time around

Childhood Memories of times when America was all about the apple pie and playing under railroad tracks. BOOM comes war, society has gone to shit, people commit murder. And as the grand finale, we all fuck. I think thats the cliff notes to the 10 pager i posted earlier in this thread...
I think the album is a picture of how america changed...the climax being OOMH.

Louisiana Bayou

Sinnin’, I done my share of this
Still I hope the Lord forgive me my sins
Ten years ago, down by the lake
I sunk my sweet love in her watery grave
But I close my eyes,
I still see her face
I’d give my soul
To take back that day
Hello again
It’s been too long
Too long, too long
Hello again
You know you got
What it is I want
Anyway I’m gonna
Take it from you
Hello again you know you got what it is I want
Anyway I know that I’m gonna take it from you
Hello…
Hello…
You know…
Hello again
Cuz I could wrote you that you’re never dames, man
Over and over
I’m gonna see her face
like a sime is sewed together where, man
over and over
im gonna see her face
blown away
on that day, I am (god damn)
what to do with all the cattle in the back yard? Hippos….send ‘em right home
I am a waste of the flesh on my bones
I am a waste of the air in my lungs
The serpent, not God, pours through my veins
(Here we go)
Hello again

Too long, too long
Hello again

Stand Up
==============================
Stand Up etc
I woke up to the angels singin in my head
you look so good naked next to me
as an angel in my head
Stand Up etc
I feel like a drug
is cooking in my veins
Till I'm so out of my mind
i'll shoot you up again
Stand Up etc
feel like smoke and fire is burning in us all
you drop me in the water
lift me up and save my soul
Stand Up etc
(clapping)
I love these lines. I could see these lyrics fitting onto Some Devil, they have the same feel to them... sort of timeless, kind of rustic, just... elemental. I'm really cool with Dave's new writing--his older songs are complicated and literary because they boiled inside of him for so many years before they were finally laid down. Also good, just for other reasons.
Is it Tuesday yet?

Hello Again 2004-10-05 Hello Again Lyrics “Best Version I have heard” This is what I think he is saying.
“Intro”
She was my,
My one and only
She was my,
One true,
And I was a fool and
Treat her wrongly
I was a fool and now,
She’s gone,
“Hello Again Lyrics”
Sittin here, Ive done my share of this
Still I hope the Lord forgive me my sins
Ten years ago, down by the lake
I sunk my sweet love in her watery grave
But I close my eyes,
And still see her face
I’d give my soul
To take back that day
Again.
Hello Again
You know you got
What it is I want
Hello Again
Hello you know you got what it is I want and
Anyway I’m gonna take it from you
Hello…
Hello…
You know…
Hello again
Cha got a love she tried to ran away but,
Over and over
I’m gonna see her face
Your type of love act away but,
over and over
im gonna see her face
blown away
on that day, I am
I am a waste of the flesh on my bones
I am a waste of the air in my lungs
Stay far from me, go and be saved
The serpent, not God, pours through my veins
Hello again
It’s been too long
Too long, too long
Hello again
You know you got
What it is I want
Anyway I’m gonna
take it from you
hello again you know you got its what I want
anyway I know I’m gonna take it from you
hello, you know
hello
hello again
over and over
I’m gonna see her face
Its all life an endless game but,
But over and over I’m gonna live that day
That kinda of talking that will never save but
But over and over I’m gonna live that day
Blown away on my way
Yeah
(it won’t be alright again)
Hello, hello
You know
Hello again
hello again you know you got its what I want
anyway I know I’m gonna take it from you
hello
hello
hello
hello again
This type of luck coming out the way but
Over and over I’m gonna see her face
Hot is burning me like angels hair but,
Over and over I’m gonna see her face
blown away
on that day
yeah
Sittin here, Ive done my share of this
Still I hope the Lord forgive me my sins
(hello, again, hello, hello, hello, again, hello, hello, yeah, hello again, hello, hello, yeah, hello again, hello, hello, hello,

Stolen Away
======================
Hello again
seems like forever between now and then
you look the same
i mean you look different but you haven't changed
funny to think how the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
stole me away
the first time i saw you did me that way
what should I say
i saw you laughin and I was afraid
i'd get in the way
i did not think I would see you again
so how have you been
do you remember everything
funny how i think the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
stole me away
the first time i saw you did me that way
what should I say
i saw you there dancing
but i was afriad i might get in the way
i did not think i would see you again
funny to think how the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
funny the feeling when fallin in love?
stole me away
the first time I saw you you did me that way
what should I say
I saw you there dancing i was afraid
i might get in the way
never thought I would see you again
how've you been
watchin the years as they trickle away
its everything
how the the time gets away
funny how you take me right back again
steal me away
its like the first time i saw you
you'd do me that way
what should I say
I see you there standing and I am afraid
i might get in the way
i never thought I would see you again
how've you been
do you remember i mean everything
you steal me away
like the first time i saw you
you'd do me that way
what can i say
thats you're here standing
and I am afraid I might get in your way
First, awesome job with all of this... but this is probably my favorite song (and line) after one listen, so here's my only correction. I believe it's:
Funny the feeling when forever ends...
Stole me away

Here's my best stab at Joyride and Trouble w/You
Joyride
=================
Hey
C'mon, c'mon, hey all y'all
If we get it right
We gonna eat the world
If you've got a question
Just get in line
Cos my intentions
Are to make you mine
I'll take care of everything
And all you need, friend, is right here
Oh, if you're lost
I got a bobblehead Jesus
It only costs you
To get on your knees
The money is clean cos we scrub it good
With guns and gasoline, we gonna save the world
Nothing's obscene if we only close our eyes
Boys and girls, welcome to this joy ride
Yeah
C'mon, all y'all
Mission up
And we're gonna steal the world
Now, if you're lost
I got a bobblehead Buddha
Legs crossed
But he's in the groove
The money is clean if we scrub it good
With guns and gasoline, we could save the world
Nothing's obscene if we only close our eyes
Boys and girls, welcome to this joy ride
It's a joy ride
This joy ride
It's a joy ride
If you're confused
If you're unsure
Be sure of this
We'll use you well
And if you're lost
I will find your way
Give me your soul, friend
It's OK
Joy
Yes
Yes
Yes
Everything's playing out
Yes
Yes
Yes
Everything's playing out
Right got it into a fit
(Dave scat singing)
Get in line
You get in line
Light up
Light up
You're going
Away
The money is clean cos we scrub it good
With guns and gasoline, we're gonna save the world
Nothing's obscene cos we only close our eyes
Boys and girls, welcome to this joy ride
It's a joy ride
In this joy ride
It's a joy ride

Trouble with You
=============================
The brightest star
On a cloudless night
Some kind of miracle
Almost empty sky
If I'd sure as God is a monkey's dream [?????]
Ain't that much to believe in what he sees
The trouble with you is you always find the fires
You said while warming your hands by the fireside
The trouble with you is you always lookin' away outside
Oh, and not enjoy yourself by the fireside
Just as the bite of the blade
Wakes the absent mind
There's time to dream
And there's time for hope in your eyes
She said just as the warmth of a kiss
Brings the love alive
It's right here by the fire
Where the answers lie
The trouble with you is always find the fire
Oh, when you warmin' your hands by the fireside
The trouble with you is you always lookin' far and wide
Oh, why not enjoy yourself by the fireside?
But you said
Why you always lookin'?
Always lookin'?
She said
Why you always lookin' outside?
She said
The trouble with you always lookin' for the fire
When you're warming your hands by the fireside
The trouble with you is you always lookin' far and wide
Oh, why not enjoy yourself by the fireside?
The trouble with you is you always lookin' somewhere else
Oh, and what you see there inside yourself
The trouble with you is you always lookin' for the fire
Oh, why not enjoy yourself by the fireside?
Oh, why not enjoy yourself by the fireside?
She said, oh, why not enjoy yourself sittin' by the fire?
She said
Trouble with you
Trouble with you

Perhaps I'm crazy, but I'd like to think at least SOME of that is true.
awesome job with the lyrics and i liked what you had to say about the album. what do you think about 'stolen away'? my immediate first reaction was this was the second half to 'little thing/an another thing'. every single word of the song seems like hes talking to the girl from the other song. its like he found her again, when he never expected to. anyway, just a thought i had.

+1 for taking the time to transcribe the lyrics. I was extremely disappointed they weren't with the cd.

Hmm. Even though nobody who's really actually looking for the lyrics is going to see this, I just transcribed my two favorite songs from the CD, and I feel like sharing my perfectionist-treated lyrics.
I just bought the CD a few hours ago and got stuck on Stolen Away & Out of My Hands. Using the pause button and the higher volumes on my stereo, I think I got a decent Dave-translation. The echoing backing vocal-thing that's going on is a bitch.
The lyrics vary very, very slightly from the ones posted at the beginning of the thread, but as an added bonus, I put my obsessive-compulsive lyrical punctuation skills to work. So if you want to look at very precise, properly-represented-in-text lyrics, here's my shot at it:
Stolen Away on 55th and 3rd
Hello again.
Seem like forever between now and then,
You look the same.
I mean, you look different, but you haven't changed.
Funny to think how the time gets away,
Funny how you take me right back again...
Stole me away.
The first time I saw you, you did me that way,
What should I say?
'Cause I saw you laughin' but I was afraid...that I'd get in the way.
I did not think I would see you again,
So how have you been?
Do you remember you lose everything,
Funny to think how the time gets away,
Funny how you take me right back again...
Stole me away.
The first time I saw you, you did me that way,
What should I say?
I saw you there dancin' but I was afraid I might get in the way.
I did not think I would see you again,
Funny to think how the time gets away,
Funny how you take me right back again,
Funny the feeling when forever ends...
Stole me away.
That time I saw you, you did me that way,
What should I say?
I saw you there dancin' but I was afraid I might get in the way.
Never thought I'd---would see you again,
How have you been?
Watchin' the years as they trickle away,
'S everything. How the time gets away,
Funny how you take me right back again...
Steal me away.
'S like the first time I saw you, you do me that way,
What should I say?
I see you, you're standin' but I am afraid I might get in the way.
I never thought I would see you again,
How have you been?
Do you remember I mean everything---?
You steal me away!
Like the first time I saw you, you do me that way,
What can I say?
'Cause I've seen you standin' but I am afraid I might get in your way...

Out of My Hands
Out on the ledge,
I don't feel safe...
And I stayed, lookin' down on you.
'S outta my hands for now.
'S outta my hands for now.
I can't just walk away...
Be nice to walk away...
But I don't feel safe,
Get away,
All the way up here.
'S outta m...'s outta my hands for now.
'S outta my hands for now.
Oh, it is,
Down from here...
Down from here...Iisten.
Start to feel insane,
Betrayed,
Out on my window ledge.
Now our finest hour arrives,
See the pig dressed in his finest files,
And all the believers stand behind him and smile,
As the day lights up with fire.
Let me in.
Let me in.
I start to feel like a crazy,
Betrayed,
Out on my window ledge.
Now our finest hour arrives,
See the pig dressed in his finest files,
And all the believers stand behind him and smile,
Watch the day lights up with fire.
Lookin' down from here...
It's out of my hands for now...
Out on my window ledge...
It's out of my hands for now...
So let me in.
Let me in.
And because this amuses me, the last time I logged in was 10-15-2003 at 04:35 PM. I hadn't realized I'd been away so long! :P Uh...so...hi again. ;)

This is what I hear when I hear this song:
Who knows? I left out the background lyrics about the cattle or whatever
Hello Again (studio)
Sinnin' I've done my share of this,
still I hope the lord forgive me my sin
Ten years ago down by the lake,
I sunk my sweet love her watery grave
I close my eyes still see her face,
I'd give my soul to take back that day
Hello again it's been too long,
too long, too long, hello again
You know you got what it is I want anyway
I'm gonna take it from you
Hello you know you got what it is I want anyway
I know I'm gonna take it from you
Hello, Hello
You know
Hello again
(It's like a notion that's in every days man)
Over and over I'm gonna see her face
(Like inside me so to get away man)
Over and over I'm gonna see her face blown away
on that day, I am
I am a waste of the flesh on my bones
I am a waste of the air in my lungs
So go far from me man, go and be safe
The serpent I got pours through my veins
(Here we go)
Hello again its been too long,
too long, too long, hello again
You know you got what it is I want anyway
I'm gonna take it from you
Hello again you know you got it what I want anyway
I gonna take it from you
Hello, Hello
You know
Hello again
(possibly scatting)
Over and over I'm gonna see her face
comin' at me like the devil's skin
and over and over
I'm gonna see her face
blown away
on that day, yeah
Again, hello you know
Hello, hello again
you know you got what it is I want anyway you know my love
i'm gonna take it from you
hello you know
hello, hello again

FYI: During the Sirius interview, Dave said that he kind of wrote Out Of My Hands from the perspective of a Gargoyle that sits and watches the world go by. I thought that was kind of interesting.

You Might Die Trying
========================
To change the world
start with one step
however small
first step is hardest of all
once you get your gate
you'll be walking tall
you said you never did
cuz you might die trying
When I first heard this line, i immediately thought gait, being that the person is learning how to walk tall. But it could be gate, meaning the person isnt being held back anymore. Funny what one different letter can do to a line...

Nah it has to be 'caine as in cocaine. The whole song is about drugs.
You think? I thought the coins in their eyes represent the money they owed meant they were in some sort of gambling debt, not necessarily drug money. Also the 3rd verse says money on the bed but you aint got to go, a prostitution reference, not drugs. Unless shes selling her body for drug money.
