Anyone actually get the AB intro to play? For me the entire song just plays, and it's the radio/iTunes version.
I don't really wanna listen to every song. I want something new when I actually listen to album on my iPod when I actually buy it.
I wish Everybody Wake Up was longer. I really don't know what I think yet. I'm gonna go listen to Everyday, because it's a great CD. Not better than UTTAD, Crash, or BTCS, but still amazingly good.

There's some mislabeling going on. If you click on Stand UP that's the AB Intro...AB intro is really AB, AB is really Smooth Rider, Smooth Rider is Old Dirt Hill, Old Dirt Hill is Stand Up, then it gets back on track.

I dont want to be a downer, but I have listened to the album 3 times now, and I really dont like it at all. I am not looking forward to hearing this this summer, but I dont want to jump to conclusions just yet, I will give it a month or so (probably more) and we will see what happens. I hope it will come out better live, I am hoping it will. Hey if dmb is happy with this and are enjoying playing together still, thats fine with me, but this will go in the everyday section of my collection, the every now and again spot on my music shelf. Just one mans opinion though.

It's actually one word - DualDisc.
The only real problem with this medium is that if you use it in a front loading CD player, the one in your car perhaps for example, the DVD side is more than likely to get scratched and frequent use will render the DVD side unplayable.
Keep in mind that the DVD side generally has a 24-bit stereo, advanced surround, DTS 5.1 or Dolby Digital version of whatever the CD side is, so in buying the DVD side you most likely have a home theatre system and couldn't care less about the CD side.
If you're just buying it to listen to in your car then you probably don't care for the DVD side.
Either way the DualDisc is here and is cheaper than DVD-A (although who knows why - it's the same bloody thing basically) and far cheaper than SACD.
I would recommend ripping the CD side and burning it to another copy, then forget about the CD side of the DualDisc.
I would agree with most people that this would be better being a separate CD/DVD release much like Busted Stuff was with the additional bonus DVD disc. It truly extends the life of your disc if you're not as careful as I am in it's handling.
I hope that helps you. Don't be afraid of the DualDisc - but basically you're buying it for the DVD side.

Okay look. This whole Carter playing sparingly shit doesn't work. He only opens it up on a few songs--thus taking away part of DMB's trademark style. Most of the songs stagnate due to repetitive guitar riffs and malign chants. The album is way too overproduced, and some of the songs sound like 80s pop tunes. There are only a few Dave-sounding guitar riffs anyway. And where the fuck is Boyd? Playing the fucking electric mandolin? This does not even come close to the four summer songs in style. The four summer songs sounded like new dave. These songs sound like new pieces of shit. I hate Battson the bastard. I hate this album. I still love the band because they are awesome. But this is a giant misfire--the equivalent of accidently striking a passenger liner with a SAM missile. Stand up, Battson? No sit your fatass down and watch dave write good music like he did on Some Devil. You are the devil. Shut up. But, DMB i do appreciate your hardwork and all the awesome music you have turned out, but this music sounds like elevator music.

I have been a DMB fan since UTTAD-30 shows with 7 coming this summer. My life has revolved around the Dave Matthews Band since early high school...meaning checking Ants/Nancies/Warehouse the second I wake up, not missing an ounce of news all day, catching every single tv appearance they have, and falling asleep to them at night. I've had my share of moments with the band: 6/11/01 Two Step at Giants, James Brown at MSG, a good amount of Warehouse openers, and Dave and Stefan acknowleding my sign in Camden last year. It seems they can't let me down. So I go to vh1 and listen to all the tracks (after having each clip on repeat for 10 hours a day). Honestly, I am happy. It just furthers the thought that when someone asks me "What kind of music is DMB?", I can say there is NO WAY to describe them. Each song had me bouncing and most gave me chills. I was happy (but Smooth Rider is still a little iffy for me). Then I came to the boards, and saw many comments saying "y'all are just in a trance and you just love everything the band does" or "you have a blind idoilzation and can't realize Stand Up is $hit". So it got me thinking, is this true? Do I just not want to admit that Stand Up is a failure? So I took another listen. The verdict...I loved it even more. Every kid in my suite (I go to college) knows I am obsessed with this band, and they knew when vh1 was streaming the album because I went nuts. After this next listen, I sat 3 of them down to listen because of how impressed I was. I knew the band wanted a different sound, and they succeeded. I sat 'em down to hear Hunger for the Great Light first because I feel that shows the biggest change in the band. I think the band has to a get chance to bring these songs on the road before this album is negatively judged. Louisiana Bayou-already strong live from Jazzfest and could only get better. Stand Up-they were definitely a tiny bit confused in their first performance, but this month is a month of practice for them. Anyway, all the songs of the album...imagine them pulling that off live? You Might Die Trying, Everybody Wake Up...seeing those successfully played, whether you like the album or not, would be an amazing sight. Just listen to the intro to HFTGL and put yourself at the Gorge, or SPAC, or the Meadows, experiencing it live. The array of music we will hear this summer is nuts. We could hear Lie In Our Graves and then Old Dirt Hill...Rapunzel, followed by Stolen Away. Leroi and Boyd go nuts on this album, and Stefan sounds better than ever. Sorry this message is all over the place. I just dunno how to get across how good a job these boys did with Mark and their hope for a new sound. Of course, there are some negatives. Carter could of definitely been a bigger part of the album. He had many chances to shine, including on Hello Again (but we know it doesn't matter cuz we already know what he does live). The other negative, the lyrics. Dave has definitely changed his style. He is more straight forward. I personally loved the hidden meanings through his lyrics (see 41, Typical Situation, etc.), and now we're listening to lines like "Your top was untied, and I thought how nice it would be to follow the sweat down your spine." That, of course, is from Dreamgirl, which may actually be a successful single. We know this band has not left its roots for good. Through tracks like Out of My Hands and Louisiana Bayou, we should know there is nothing to worry about...especially when those tracks are sharing the same CD as the other 11. I feel this album, right now, is satisfying me more than Busted Stuff and Everyday, and in time, who knows? I'll be at Roseland on the 9th...and I know the show will be one of the best I've experienced. Hope to see some of you there.

I agree 100% with everything you said in this post. :thumbsup :thumbsup

I think you have to look at this album, for better or worse, as a product of this new creative process they tried. A lot of people have been trying to say lately that if the album is bad, then don't blame Mark Batson, blame the band. That makes a lot of sense, but what I don't think those people realize is how much the circumstances surrounding the creation of music have an effect on what the music will become. It's not just a matter of individual talent.
With previous albums (excluding Everyday), we had Dave writing the lyrics and music to most of the songs alone. Thus the songs were more personal to him, because he didn't have someone, in effect, "looking over his shoulder" while writing. They carried more emotion because Dave was able to get his full ideas out before someone second-guessed him or misinterpreted where he was coming from. Presented mostly with finished lyrics and music, the band was able to read his ideas in a pretty finalized form and add a kind of pure feeling to the song to complement it. So we got a lot of darker songs that struck a more personal chord with most fans; one of the amazing characteristics of DMB in the past has been their ability to blend darker themes with uplifting music in a way that seems completely natural. I think that's because Dave has had a lot of tragedy in his life and he writes some stunning lyrics about that, while the band wants to have fun playing and their amazing energy shines through in a way that adds a dimension of hope to these songs. It's a beautiful contrast that makes DMB my favorite band.
It's great that the band is touting Stand Up as a collaborative effort, and I'm sure a lot of things were gained from working together at the beginning. First of all, we get a fresh and progressive musical sound on many of the songs, and I thank Mark for facilitating that. This new sound is, if nothing else, very exciting. I also think this album secured the band together, as a unit, for years to come. I have no fear of DMB breaking up any time in the near future.
But we also lost a lot through this collaborative process. I was in a band for about half a year recently, and the one thing I realized was that my songwriting suffered when the whole band tried to write songs with me. It wasn't because the other members were less talented than me; in fact they had been playing music for a lot longer than I had and were much more technically skilled (as I think is the case w/ DMB). But we'd always get stuck trying to make the same fun but meaningless repetitive jam because there was no coherent vision or idea of what the song was about. It was assumed that the meaning would just evolve later, and we'd throw some lyrics in there and have a song. It didn't work that way, and the new songs were pretty weak messages.
I guess the point I'm trying to make is even between good friends as I'm sure the 4 of these guys are, communication is way too limited for separate people with separate ideas, emotional states, and backgrounds to create one pure representation of a feeling that all great songs convey. Next time around, if they want to work collabaratively (as they should, because all members of this band are extraordinarily talented musicians), then maybe Dave should write a few full songs, and then Carter writes a few, and then Stefan or Boyd or Leroi or Butch. Okay, I'm a little frightened about Boyd after True Reflections ... but I'm sure he's got a good song in him somewhere.
Stand Up was a learning experience, and I flatly disagree with anyone who says this band is past its prime. We know they still have it in them to produce great music, but it's got to be something that comes from them as a collection of brilliant individuals, rather than the quirky but clumsy art project that this new album seems to be.

BTW, I'm not one of these people that is cancelling their preorder. Stand Up's going to be playing in my CD player a lot this summer, because it's still entertaining to listen to. I'm just saying it doesn't reach me the way DMB has always done.

I was looking through some past threads (looking for info on the j5 album) and it's interesting, everybody's talking smack about the beat box bit but check out what someone said just last year
#1 - LOVE JURASSIC 5 tell me "thin line isn't one of the best non-dmb songs
#2 - love that dave, he never dissapoints us with a lull in new music
#3 - DMB with a little r&b flava? this will rock!
although, i don't think that stand up pulled it off like that person (and myself included) thought it would be. anyways, it's just a curious little thing.
EDIT: btw, did dave end up working on that album?
peace love music
