"am not quite sure if it is up to btcs standards"
i don't really know what that means. well i do, i know what you are getting at, but i hate how ppl are trying to compare it to that album, or compare everything else with that one album. people, nothing will ever be an equal to that album...i'm not saying some ppl won't like an album better than btcs, buut, all the albums are different and esp this one. i don't think asking if it is up to btcs standards reveals that much about the album itself.

This talk about being as good lyrically as BTCS...pshhhh... dreaming tree, spoon, ddtw, and stone all shit on every single stand up song x2. And for musically, album wise... the music on stand up sucks, way to over processed, the songs are great, but the way they sound, Im just not diggin it. The thing with stand up tho is despite its sound on the album, every single song on stand up has incredible live potential... huuuuge live potential. I cant wait to hear these songs live by the end of this tour, god their gonna be sweet.

You have to look at the two albums from differant perspectives. There is no way you can compare the two because it's a style clash. It's like comparing peanut butter and jelly, both kick ass but they come from two differant catagories. Now if you'll excuse me, I have a hankering for some PB&J.

BTCS vs. SU... it's like REM following up "Automatic for the People" with "Monster." The latter is a GREAT album, but a completely different kind of creature from "Automatic." The point of each album is to be what *that album is*. BTCS was an album with a ton of guest musicians and it had a certain feel to it. SU is just a different feel.
Look at the threads around here: about half the people are completely in love and enthused, the other half are turned-off and yelling "suckass". That's pretty much human nature. I don't expect anything else.
For my part, I'm fucking ECSTATIC to hear my boys doing songs that feel creative, youthful, and exciting. I didn't want another "Busted Stuff" with a lot of depressed-Dave songs. The tone of this album is that of the pre-Everyday era, and I've been waiting for this album since 1998.

This thread makes me :lol
This album isn't even close to being on the same level as BTCS. I actually have it in 4th behind BCTS, Crash, and UTTAD. I mean seriously, what are some of you guys thinking?
I mean stop and think about the songs on the other 3 albums and compare some of the songs to Stand Up: Typical Situation vs. Steady As We Go? Cry Freedom vs. Out of My Hands? Crush vs. Dreamgirl? None of the songs on Stand Up can compare musically or lyrically to The Stone.
Don't get me wrong, this album is decent and I'm really enjoying it, but it just can't compare to the other three.

If you would honestly choose Everybody Wake Up over Stay then we must not be listening to the same song. Hello Again and Pay For What You Get are two different to compare. Out of My Hands vs. Let You Down I would choose Out of My Hands, but barely.

I would choose the studio version of Everybody Wake Up over Stay in a second. Obviously we can't compare live songs yet. The lyric "It was so hot outside you can fry an egg" makes me want to cry / die.

you could say that...however, in some cases, i do feel there is a clear 'winner' or one with the better represented opinion. not everyone will agree with that, but so be it. i can list so many bull crap throw out the window lyrics from this new album it is crazy. i just don't see how if you had to make a list of quality lyrics from both albums, stand up would win? i just couldn't see how that would happen.

To each their own man. The chorus "Everybody wake up, if you're livin' with your eyes closed" get's on my nerves. In my opinion, the sax riff at the end of Stay just automatically blows Everybody Wake Up out of the water.

I think it's the fact that Lillywhite had to lock Dave in a room and force lyrics out of him before recording that make me question the ones on BTCS a little bit. Not to mention the Fry and egg line in Stay makes me want to die.

There are some days where I think Crash is a better album than BTCS.
i always agree with you every time you make this point. so i'll do it again. crash has a better flow to it. i disagree when dave calls it (and UTTAD) a collection of songs. the order of the songs, how well they were done (even two step, LIOG, and #41 give you a sense of completion even though the jams aren't there) and the production take the listener on a journey. i don't skip songs on crash. i skip rapunzel and stay on BTCS, it drives me nuts the last stop reprise isn't attached, and that there isn't any hint of a jam (specifically roi's) on crush.
on the original topic, stand up < BTCS. i don't think stand up flows very well at all, it goes all over the place (i think it would have been better had the songs been in a different order). BTCS created a mood. stand up doesn't do that.

Yes I agree, songs evolve when they play them live...Look at the first #41...and look at #41 now...Same thing with Halloween...They were just another song to play..now they have evolved into something special

The more I listen to this the better it gets. While its still nowhere close to BTCS imo, I think live, these songs could rival some of BTCS. Also, no offense to Batson, I think this album would be a little better if the band went back to the studio and rerecorded these songs with lillywhite. We would probably get something alittle more of what we're use to, and imo better.

I think live the energy on these tunes is amazing. Bayou swells up into fury like no other song that dmb plays live. Hunger is short and sweet, jam packed with an orgasm of sound. Smooth rider with rashawn ross is low end sound of dmb like we would have never heard without this album. All and all not better than BTCS but better than everyone thought it would be.

I'm pretty sure the first part is on me, as I'm the only one who said you were stupid, but the second part is against the thread starter, I believe.
And on that point, to insult someone on spelling/grammar (because honestly, what argument does grammar arguments NOT solve?), you should type out words (cuz= because), try to use periods and not ellipsis', and one question mark will do it.

Why? Great art has to last for more than a week. Every DMB fan was excited for this album after 2004. And some of us even enjoyed Stand Up, for a week, until we realized how crappy it was. And that's why I didn't buy tickets to the summer tour.

MistreatedLewis went from a Stand Up fanatic to a self proclaimed musical and lyrical genius in the course of one year. Neato!
Lyrics are as good as BTCS, musically we shall see. HA!
The lyrics either suck or they don't, you don't all of a sudden realize they suck. I will never take your posts seriously now since I now know you are a hack. Don't even say you were just "trying" to like it. You just aren't the in-depth intellectual that you believe yourself to be. Patchetic!
PS.
I hope you sense a little sarcasm in there. I liked it at first as well :)

This was before the album was out though. The only thing we had to go by lyrically was Hello Again and a few short clips.

I can't wait for the next album to come out, we'll all be positive it's going to be great. Even Lewis! :lol

Exactly.
I enjoyed Stand Up for a while; a few months in fact. But i think that had far more to do with it being new than being good.

Way too early to make that comparison I believe. Lyrically it's probably at least as good... musically it's tough to top that one. Buuuut.... like others have said, we shall see.
Quoted for posterity. :lol

i was just wondering your thoughts. because i love this album and am not quite sure if it is up to btcs standards. but still is an incredible album. in my opinion it could possibly be pretty close. but i feel these songs will be much more successful like than the btcs songs. there is lalot of energy in tehse songs. tell me what you think

On my first listen? Yeah I remember finding it really catchy. It takes me more than one listen to fully digest and judge a song though. It should take anyone who isn't quite up to Mozart's abilities, which I certainly am not, to do the same...
Oh, also at that point I was only going on tiny snippets of lyrics in my head... I was not familiar with the album lyrically at all. Remember, this was based on a few clips and perhaps one quasi-full listen. And I think BTCS is considerably weaker than Crash and UTTAD lyrically... in fact, I think parts of BTCS are downright lyrically weak. Still do.

And of course, there was the emotional response. I was less disappointed in the Everyday album than many, but I knew it was far beneath DMB and I thought the 01 tour was incredibly weak. I was bored out of my mind with 02 and much of 03. After Busted Stuff, I thought maybe the band was really losing the spark and creativity. Then I was thrilled with the 04 tour and the new songs and truly believed that DMB was back in a big way. I didn't think they could fuck it up again. I wanted to love that album in a huge way... I was incredibly emotionally invested and caught up in the excitement. But after a few listens, of course, the shallowness of the album is just so obvious...
