Of course! If everyone liked the album I would be scared that we were brainwashed...

What is it with all these people coming out of the woodwork all of a sudden to trash the album? Most people here like it, and you really can't compare it to Everyday in a sense that ED was Dave and Ballard's album, whereas this is a clear compilation of the band, and I can only imagine how well these tunes are going to translate live.

The band is older??? I think it's older stuff is more mature than the newer stuff.. new stuff sounds like a regular band, like a band that have never played songs like So Much To say, two step, the stone, bartender, dido, etc. but DMB DID play those songs sometime and they're doing this now.. just weird

not everyone is being unreasonable. but i do think some people just don't like it and they're expressing it in entirely the wrong way. so are some of the people who love it, by the way. :shrug

dmb is a "regular" band (whatever that means), they're just a damn good one. i don't like their new album either, but just listen to those old songs if you like them so much.

yes.. I'll do that... the bad thing is I'm listening the same old songs like 3 years ago and none of their new stuff compares to that.

let me know if you want me to introduce you to some different music. :) seriously, not being sarcastic.

edit: and you're right, their recent material hasn't stacked up to their earlier years, but that's life. the beatles stopped making music after the 60's. life went on.

I actually will change my estimate to slightly over 200. Using random sampling, I calculated that on average you fit 3.2-3.3 bands on one line, and you list 66 lines of bands. So 3.2 x 66 is over 200.

Oh, we also have a friend in common, I think that's cool. :lol

:thumbsup :thumbsup i'm with you on radiohead, coldplay, the shins, damien rice (and jack johnson a little)

my suggestions:
the olivia tremor control - some of the deepest music this side of radiohead. basically semi-experimental music heavily inspired by 60's artists like the beatles and brian wilson. if you like some of the beatles revolver through white album period, you might love some of this. it's pretty trippy stuff, but it's also incredibly accessible 60s-tinged stuff in the same way that the shins are.

the apples in stereo - if you like the shins, check out "fun trick noisemaker," their debut album.

beulah - as above, but add in bittersweet california melodies.

tortoise - experimental in the same way that radiohead is, but they did it years before radiohead left their rock base. kinda jazz- and electronic-influenced and very engaging listening.

medeski martin and wood - almost needs no introduction. where jazz instrumentation meets a funky jam band. some of the best drumming you'll ever hear. this is a logical development from bands like dave matthews band.

interpol - kinda off the beaten path from coldplay, but if you like reverb-y and exciting rock music, check em out. it's basically the sound of new york city canned into rock music. very dark and very rewarding.

the walkmen - also intense indie rock, but more pleading and human than interpol. you won't hear a band this confident in their sound very often.

xavier rudd - the closest thing i can think of to describe him is to imagine an australian fusion of damien rice and jack johnson. but he's a multi-instrumentalist. great performer.

iron and wine - if you like damien rice, you should check out sam beam's project iron and wine. it's new folksy music via florida instead of ireland, but a little less rock-y than damien rice. lovely stuff.

oops, i seem to have the wrong thread. :D

let me know if you like any of this stuff. there's dozens more where this came from.

I don't understand why people feel the need to be so negative when the album has literally just come out. I mean, sure, you could have heard it 20 times already. Give it time to sit.

I think it's silly to say, "their old stuff is much better and the new stuff doesn't compare." This might be so, but deal with it! If we love DMB for who they are and what they can do, we should be happy for them that they experiment and try new things. This new album may not be as good as the other but its good in its own right. :)

It is completely beyond me how you have found so many great bands to be interested in. I keep finding myself going back to the same 5 or 6. Maybe i'm boring but i just cant get into much else. I do try though, i spend most nights with headphones on while i do homework, listening to peoples itunes. <--and thats where you have me astounded. I could spend every night this year and still not find as many obscure bands like that that would interest me.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I always come back to my "favorite" bands. Does it mean I can't enjoy other music when I hear it? Of course not. Does it mean that if the band changes, I should long for the "good ol' days" when I first discovered them? No way! I want to explore music with my favorite bands just as much as I want to explore music by trying different bands. :monkey

there shouldnt be any threads on a fan site that are appropriate for bashing anything to do with the band the fan site is dedicated to

I am sure these songs will be MUCH better live after the band has had some more time away from the studio. Most times in that kind of environment you think what you have is the best you can do until you just walk away from it. For example, in the last tour DMB took many of their older songs and added scats and new james to them. I havent lost faith yet I just think this last producer had WAY too much input on the music, he should have just left it up to the band they have done just fine on their own.
