Ive listened to the album a lot today. Pretty good, not great, but one thing i noticed, which has been different with any other dmb album ive owned is that there isnt one song I absolutley love. Like with BS it was YNK, Everday, So Right, and BTCS Crush, and while I wasnt a fan when they released crash (only 10, give me a break :lol ) I loved Too Much and DiDo, and WWYS with Uttad. Anyone else kinda have similar feelings about the album?

dude, the album hasnt even been released yet. listen to it, see the songs live and then make your judgements. theses songs will come across as more "grassroots" old school dmb when played live.

I saw someone else mention that there was no "meat and potatoes" on this album...no one instant classic. I think each person is going to have a different song because they are all so different. I am liking Steady as We Go the best, which may seem weak in comparison to other favorites (BOWA, Two Step) but it's doing it's own thing for me.

:thumbsup - I said Everybody Wake Up in another thread, but that's just if I was forced to pick one. There is no one song that's been in my head since I heard it.

So far Everybody Wake Up, Out of My Hands, Hunger for the Great Light, Dream Girl, and Old Dirt Hill really grab me as album tracks. I would say I love these tracks.

Of course, Hello Again and Louisiana Bayou are fantastic live as well.

I didnt say they were bad, and im just talking from a studio perspective, because I loved songs on the other albums but not this one so far.

i don't think i've ever listened to an album once all the way through without having a specific obvious favorite song. that doesn't mean the song has to be amazing...just out of the 13 or so songs to pick from, there is always one i like the most.

I don't have a favorite, and I likely won't ever have a favorite on this album.

But I will have a favorite depending on how they are played live.

i think the cd is too effected, its just been too electronically mashed together, kinda how everyday sounds.... if you notice how everyday songs (most of them at least) sound live, they sound more like the old stuff (and more people like them)... the old stuff was them playing how they play live, not too complex all at once, and no one stepping on each others toes

if u notice it says on the VH1 site the band made the album like playing on thier back porch. That might have been true, but with all of the effects and layering it doesnt song like that at all (for example you might die trying --- that sound at the end will NEVER be produced live). also, much of the great sax and violin we love is stuck in the background because of the mashing togther(i blame batson, hes the one that mixed it, and they probly sounded totally different recording them), and does not jump out like they did in the older songs. i think these songs will sound more grass roots style and more like DMB live, and we'll love them like that

if i had to pick a song i like the most, it would be AB, it doesnt sound as over effected and each member plays their part and can be heard separatly (i dont care if its becoming a "pop" radio favorite, non DMB fans can like what they want about it, but ill still see the great DMB elements they wont)

I couldn't agree more. After my first listen I was a little disappointed to say the least. I knew the album was going to be different from previous ones but there was no "Too Much" or "Crush" or 41 that just grabbed me from the beginning and made me say yes. After a second listen I definitely think theres some quality songs but I still don't hear anything good enough to replace anything on a previous album (in other words, I don't think any of these songs really measure up to dave's previous stuff at this point). While I'm hoping these songs grow on me, I almost feel at this point that I'm trying hard to like them and find parts of the songs that I really like (something I've never had to do before as a DMB fan). In my opinion American Baby is still the best song on the album, which is disappointing because while it is a good song, I originally looked at it to be more of an "I Did It" single where the album contained at least 5 or 6 songs that one would rank higher then it. Hopefully my opinions will change as I listen to this album more, I can't imagine not loving a dmb album!

My favorite is either "Louisana Bayou" or "Hunger for the great light"

Wow, I think you're the first person I've seen say that American Baby is their favorite of the new songs... interesting.

Totally agree... I feel like I'm trying to like these songs, but I almost feel like I'm pretending to like them just because I love DMB so much. When I first heard So Right for the first time... I was like holy shit! it was the best thing in my life, and Two Step... enough said. It sounded like you know... musical instruments being played together by 5 people + Butch!! Not DMB, Butch, Mark, and a group of 20 people flickin computer switches messing with the sound! ok im done before i get too mad haha... Hopefully these will be a little better live when Im at Roseland...

YEah but what's what Radiohead did on Kid A and don't you think that effort was pretty impressive?

yes, but let's not kid ourselves -- this is no kid a. now that was experimentation. this isn't like anything dmb has done before, but it's not as revolutionary as kid a was. that album required listeners to either shelve it or change their perception of sound.

No, this is not Kid A. But I just get annoyed when people say this album is bad because the drums sound electronic. As if electronic music is Satan. It isn't. Nor is hip hop.

yeah, i'm feeling that way too. there's way too much half assed transitional jamming on the album -- that's the stuff to save for a live show. give us some songs!

"everyday" songs, for the most part, had a dmb feel to them. i can't find a single song on this album which bears any resemblance to the sound that attracted me to the dmb in the first place. after twenty listens i'm still looking for this album's hook. the violin solo mid-"stone," the "'til we dance away" outro of "lover lay down," the pause in "the space between," the height of "grey street," or the jam on "lie in our graves" -- there's nothing on "stand up" that comes even close to evoking the emotion any of those moments do. the most passionate moment on "stand up" happens during the first twenty seconds of "dreamgirl."

"everyday" had the original spirit of the boys, "stand up" does not. do i enjoy "stand up"? yes. i love these guys. do i consider it worth the wait/hype? absolutely not. it is in their nature to create on tour, not in studio -- they should acknowledge that. take a few months, write about 20 news songs and play three a night.

i can't wait for these songs to grow up. owning and listening to "stand up" is like looking at a picture of your girlfriend/boyfriend at age thirteen -- even though you know they're gonna be something great one day, they still look awkward... =)

Whats the deal with the lousy vocals on the chorus ? Dave sounds like he got kicked in the nuts. I'm shocked how many people here like this album. As one of the many crappy songs says " Everybody Wake Up. "
