If anyone gives this an A, I would seriously reconsider listening to music :) No offense. An A means - perfect album, a classic. While Stand Up is somewhat catchy and some would even say its got "great" songs...considering this album to be an essential is nuts. Get out, listen to some other music.

I went ahead and gave it a C even though I'm only 75% through listening. It's been difficult listening so far. Kind of reminds me of my first listen to Everyday. Is it just me, or are they trying way too hard to be "funky" on this album?

i'm just noting that it's similar to the way many schools grade these days. think about it -- C means passing, but many students believe that it means failing. C should be a fine grade. the problem with grading these days is that it tends to push everything in the higher regions, leaving no distinction between something that is merely good and something that is excellent.

I suppose that's a valid assumption, perhaps made more valid by the fact that I think I just got a C+ on my econ final and I think that sucks :p

yeah, mine wasn't a personal criticism either. most schools i've been at make a C a "low" grade. the college of william and mary is the first place i've been to where sometimes you should be really happy just to get a B.

c would be the average cd. strictly satisfactory. if this is in fact grading it compared to ALL artist's cds, this is most def. an a, seeing that 95% of music today blows goats. but compared to other dmb albums?

Well are we talking all current artists or music in general? I wouldn't rank this anywhere near the best of Hendrix, Zeppelin or Floyd. Then there's Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, etc...

I mean, Stand Up compared to music in general is just....meh. Compared to DMB's other albums its....meh. So all it really has is "Well its better than Hilary Duff's last CD"

The problem is that they are letting too many kids into college nowadays. They need to stop admitting inner city students and students from low income families, because I don't feel comfortable when I have my nice polo sweater wrapped around my shoulders and they are sitting next to me wearing their basketball jersies and backwards caps.

I have no problem with women in schools, so long as they stick to nursing and elementary education.

That's most likely the most random thing I've read today. Funny though.

I too went with a B...I think there are some great tunes (Hello Again, Bayou, Hunger, Dreamgirl, Everybody Wake Up) and some weakers ones (Stolen Away, You Might Die Trying), but overall the entire album is solid. The songs I like, I really like, and the songs that aren't as good aren't too hard on the ears either. Overall, I'm pretty impressed with this work, and I see great things in the (near) future.

Anybody that gave it an A(perfection?) is a 'Happy Birthday DMB Fan.' What's a Happy Birthday DMB Fan you ask? It's a person that would praise a DMB album even if it contained 16 different versions of the song "Happy Birthday to You."

I don't think I am misunderstanding you, but I would have to disagree somewhat. I am senior in college (graduating in a little over a week) and I generally get As. For the amount of work I put into my projects, they damn well deserve As, and any teacher that gets in my way had better look out.

right, but what often happens is that you might be doing A work and getting an A, and your classmate might might be doing A- work and getting an A, and the guy doing B work is getting an A-, and so on, all because C isn't "passing" anymore.

I beg to differ, I give this album an A not because of perfection. An A can range from 93-100%, regradless, I gave this ablum an A because I personally think that it is an excellent album, rather than thinking about it on arithmetic scale of perfection (which we can all strive for but not achieve, nobody and nothing is perfect, although Under the Table and Dreaming is close) I listen to how the music makes me feel, and how much I enjoy Listening to this album. I also dont think that means that i need to listen to more different music (as someone else mentioned earlier in the thread). I listen to a lot of different music and have many backgrounds as well as being a musician my entire life, thus i dont understand how you can justify questioning someones musical taste or appreciation simply because they like something that you dont. I just throughly enjoyed their new and fresh sounding music.

What Mark Batson did for the band was outstandind, i mean, he gave us music that moves you that you can groove to, its completely different from their other stuff and extremely tastefull (you can groove to old stuff, you can groove to anything carter plays, but i mean that this album has a greater emphasis on the dancing aspect and its a nice change). Agreed, it doesn't fit quite the same style of playing, or song writing that the band and we are used to, but looking at the album alone without the influence of worrying about comparing it to other albums I LOVE this album and do think it deserves an A. I couldnt me more excited to hear what this band is going to do with these songs on the summer tour i think theyll be jammed out like crazy. So i dont know how most people grade their music but i certainly didnt listen through to find all the flaws and see how far from perfect the album is i just listened to it and thought it was a fantastic album.

IMO, i see:
Under the Table and Dreaming :: A+
Before These Crowded Streets :: - A
Stand Up :: A (but not quite as good as the BTCS A)
Remember Two Things :: B+
Busted Stuff :: B
Crash :: B -
Everyday :: C +

Now if were talking about the songs on those albums played live, thats an entirely different story, but in terms of how I enjoy listening to the DMB studio albums (and r2t, which is partly live which is why its so good). We'll see how the songs are live and then perhaps have another session of quarreling song graders. I apologize for all spelling mistakes and for those of you who dont like reading a lot (im one of them) but felt the need to express this stuff, im not a common poster. Anyways, I enjoyed Stand Up, theyres my two cents :)

C for me. If there was a C+ option I probobly would have given it that, but there isn't so anyway... It depends on how you scale the grades. I mean there's a huge difference between getting an A in an academic course vs. an honors course, and getting an A in an honors course vs. an AP course. This cd is fun and catchy and has some interesting moments, but nothing really stands out.

I'd give UTTAD and Crash A+ and BTCS A (live it is an A+). Everyday I give C+/C (basically in the same range as Stand Up, but the band has a completely different approach to each of these cds), and Busted Stuff I would give B+ (again, live it's a different story.)
If I comprared Stand Up to the Jesse Mcartney (sp?) or something I'd give it an A. But I'm comparing it to DMB and the expectations I have of them.

I gave it a B a solid albumn, differnt but good and I think it'll grow into some strong live stuff which is what DMB is all about... to counter your quote did you not expect it to get stong "A" support... this is a DMB message board after all and they could put a "crap" albumn together and still probably get some A's...
