NOTE: THIS IS JUST FOR FUN. NOTHING AGAINST ALBUM.

Assuming they still have wrote some of the same songs. This is not a bash of the new album or anything I just thought it would be cool to see what people could come up with from this album and previous stuff not as produced. A more raw sound, such as the Lillywhite Sessions compared to Busted Stuff.

Dave Matthews Band
new album "Hello Again"

1. Hello Again>
2. Louisiana Bayou
3. Help Myself
4. Smooth Rider^
5. Joy Ride
6. Sugar Will*
7. Crazy-Easy (ala 7/16/04)
8. Battle Hymn of the Republic
9. Intro>
10. American Baby
11. Good Good Time
12. Get Me High (ala 7/30/03 soundcheck jam)
13. Sweet Up and Down
14. Loving Wings (ala 12/14/02)>
15. Hello Again Reprise

*Jamal Milner on Electric Guitar
^Warren Haynes on Slide Guitar

notes. if i were producing.
this album would be very balanced in every aspect of the band.
heavy in BUTCH as well.
i want this to sound RAW. that is what seperated lillywhite sessions
from busted stuff was it's rawness. i don't know how to put it but
not overly produced perhaps.

1. Hello again (make this GRAB the energy that the sound had all summer. includes Carter showcasing and dave wailing on vocals at the end, getting slightly mellow before going into..)
2. Louisiana Bayou (granted these songs may not have even been written if Batson wasn't around. but lets pretend it would be. This gives a nice feel and and is heavy in Butch and Boyd)
3. Help Myself (I only put a new version of this on because it's summer and it would give a nice feel to a summer release album. Add a little more Butch on this and it will differ vastly from the previous studio version)
4. Smooth Rider (slow it down a little bit with more Butch jam action, Warren stepping in and getting into a groove with Butch Carter and Stefan)
5. Joy Ride (just a good summer song, this song made me want to dance a lot last summer and i miss it)
6. Sugar Will (one of the longest tracks on the album with an extensive bartender like jam. ala 7/23/04 with JAmal Milner on guitar, Butch ripping it up, Roi getting his turn, and Dave ending the song with a sweet fade out scat)
7. Crazy-Easy (If you can grasp in a studio what Dave did to this song on 7/16/04 it could be the greatest studio moment of any album. Roi wails off and Dave puts so much into the end of the song, would be so sweet)
8. Battle Hymn of the Republic (I really dug when Dave played this at Farm Aid and think for this album it could translate into a good full band song)
9. 10. Intro>American Baby (Similiar to the one from Stand Up, the intro is just so great i think it really begins what i think is a great ending to an album, this American Baby is not as overproduced. Stefans Bass at the end is really brought it to funk this song up big time)
11. Good Good Time (This album lets us know hey, its summer, all the worries in the world suck but lets enjoy it while we can, just an acoustic fun upbeat song, could you imagine this in the studio)!!!!
12.Get Me High (tentative title, ala 7/30 soundcheck, this song will feature everyone shining, stefan, carter, and especially BUTCH tearing up the end of this song)
13. Sweet Up And Down (Brought back and rejuvenated more upbeat with a great band by the jam to end a great section of the album)
14. Loving Wings (slow it down at the end, leroi going off, sweet percussion by carter)but not without an intense drum solo by Carter that goes into..)
15. Hello Again Reprise (the part where they go back into Hello Again in the song)

basically imagine this album being produced with a similiar sound to the way the Lillywhite Sessions were produced.

any thoughts?

I know the boys wanted to work with Batson or whatever but I thought they did a hell of a job on there own last summer developing those songs into what they were. Each song last summer really took off and I wish the boys would have stuck with that. Stand Up is fun and interesting and the songs from it will add so much live. I was just really bored.

Hmmm... interesting idea. I wouldn't want it to sound as raw as the Lillywhites but to have more of the shimmering layering of BTCS. Anyway, here would be my album:

1. Dream Girl -- This is a wonderful way to start the album. I wouldn't touch it except to give Roi a nice soprano sax solo at the end.
2. Stand Up -- I really wouldn't touch this one either except I would encourage Carter to take a badass solo at the end.
3. Joy Ride -- I love this song, Rapunzel rip-off or not.
4. Smooth Rider -- I would have extended this, encouraged Dave to add some lyrics, and have Boyd take a cool electric violin solo with distortion at the end.
5. Old Dirt Hill -- Well, I like the vocals but just to make everyone else happen I'd remove the Bring That Beat Back... I would have used real drum sound too.
6. Out of My Hands -- Perfect, I wouldn't touch this track.
7. Everybody Wake Up -- Cool track, I just would have added more jamming at the end.
8. Hello Again -- I would have left the drum solo out too, but I would have encouraged Dave to yell more...
9. Lousiana Bayou -- Should sound a little bit more organic to me, like New Orleans.
10. Crazy Easy -- I really think this is more deserving of album treatment than Stolen Away.
11. Intro to American Baby -- Wouldn't have touched it.
12. American Baby -- I would have encouraged them to write a better bridge...
13. You Might Die Trying -- Would have extended the ending jam, used real drums, and given Carter a badass drum solo at the end.
14. Hunger for the Great Light -- I like this one the way it is.

There you go.

Well I'm gonna try and stick to the 4 summer songs and the actual Stand Up songs...and because it is late and I'm lazy I'm not gonna say what I would change. I will just assume they will be in the same format as the songs already are.

1 Stand Up
2 Dream Girl
3 Intro to AB
4 American Baby
5 You Might Die Trying
6 Crazy-Easy
7 Everybody Wake Up
8 Out of my hands
9 Sugar Will
10 Hello Again
11 Louisiana Bayou
12 Joy Ride
13 Hunger for the Great Light
14 Steady As We Go (but really jam out the ending)

I really wish they played Battle Hymn of the Republic. I think Carter could rock it.

Wasn't that a little time consuming?

lol, that must have taken up a lot of time! But, I do agree with you about Smooth Rider. It does need Warren Haynes or someone of his likes.

Ha it looked time consuming but once I got the idea in my head I just
flew with it. I'm really happy about what I came up with too. I truly
think that would be an album that totally blew people away.

Two words: Concept Album!

That would be bad ass if DMB did something like PF's The Wall. They've got quite a few war/political/American songs on Stand Up, I think they could have done it.

I was just going to say that. Mine would be a concept album no doubt...ideally one that begins as optimistic and descends into profoundly dark subject matter. It could either end this way or with the glimmer of hope.

I think mine would end with Out Of My Hands, saying that there's nothing he can do about it. That would be a dark, but cool way to end the album IMO.

If I were to produce DMB, I'd give them 100% control. My job would be nothing more than to help them use the studio to achieve their vision.

I really wish people would stop giving props to butch. He sounds absolutely horrible. Just listen to when the keys are played by someone other than butch on SU!

sorry for the negativity , but I just think he's supposed to be there to fill space NOT actually play the riff of the stone alongside dave. :BANG

Yea...that's what happened with Busted Stuff...I don't know about you but I don't want DMB producing their own material.

The Master

What's wrong with Busted Stuff? It isn't as good as Lillywhite overall for sure, yes, but the reason the songs evolved was because that's the way they evolved live. I think BS is a great album, representing perfectly well what the songs became, and we got one amazing new song out of those sessions: You Never Know. I'm not sure if that song would have come out the way it did had Batson produced. Maybe I'm wrong, though.

I say let the band produce themselves. I think the results would be great.

Dave never played the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". He played "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!" at Farm Aid.
