My fears have been confirmed! Stand Up is by far DMB's worst recording to date. Not only is the album as a whole terrible, the song "Stand Up" is one of the worst songs I have ever heard in my life. I would rather be locked in a room, bound, and beaten listening to John Mayer cd's than have to sit through this peice of crap again. Its such a shame what DMB have become. They are only a shadow of what was once the greatest and most original band to come along in decades. Think about this, why would they fail to put the best songs on this album; ie Joy Ride, Sugar Will, Crazy Easy? I'll tell you why, DMB has lost all touch with its fan base and have made Dave's 3rd solo album. It is only a matter of time until DMB leave us forever and Dave can move on to what he obviously wants, a solo career. Flame away, I know they are coming.

I actually love Stand up on this album. I play it LOUD and it gets even better. there is a lot going on in that song. It is damn near perfect, IMO.
This album as a whole, is awesome. The only song that bugs me is 55th and 3rd. I'm more disappointed than anything else. From the clips I heard, i thought this had potential to be amazing. They screwed it up though.
Other than that, I think I'm going to listen to the album for the 30,144, 122 time.

i don't know man, the songs you name, really didn't get me going. when i first heard them i wasn't impressed at all, joyride sounds like a rehashed rapunzal, sugar will is an empty sounding song and can be pretty boring at times, and i can't even recall how crazy easy goes except for the chorus at this moment in time....given i have grown to like those songs a lot over time(joyride is 1 of my favs at the moment, i love the guitar riff in sugar will...etc..) anyway i feel these new SU songs are far more interesting and they are definately bolder then the songs you named. i just don't know how you could say it's a 3rd solo dave album when in all actuality it is really a dave, stefan, carter, boyd, leroi, butch and baston solo album mashed together to make a BAND album. i think the album is really great and i'm sorry to hear that you don't see it.

Okay, okay. You don't like the album. We get that. You aren't alone in that aspect (as a matter of fact, if you stroll over to ufck.org, you would probably cream yourself).
But calling it Dave's "3rd solo album" is way too far from the truth to leave go. As a matter of fact, I think one of this albums MAJOR drawbacks is that Dave wasn't involved ENOUGH in the songwriting and playing.
I remember Dave saying that some of his favorite tunes were left off the album because they were looking for a more collaborative writing effort from the band.

Personally I like all dmb's music even if it wasnt there best, but keep in mid they are trying something different. just being devil's advocate...remember what they said about everyday when it first came out and how it was such a great album...then later down the road the truth came out....
After being devil's advocate, i do believe this is the first entirely band CD we have. hence the change in sound. It's not "dave's" sound with some other influences thrown in....it's everyones influences thrown into a big pot and stirred about. So i do beleive them when they say that it was their best time in the studio, since everyone seemed to have an equal part.

This CD was for the band, not for Dave.
I know the point youre trying to make. This CD was a collaborative effort unlike Everyday. Still, i hate it when people say this CD was for the band. The music should be for the fans. They're the one's spending their money on it. It's like having someone bake a cake, give you crumbs, and with their mouth full say, "mmph. sorrythiswasforus, notyou."

Yea all I know is when I write music...I don't write it for anyone else but me...that is pretty selfish to expect the band to make music to appease others...
They make music that they want to make and those who like it will listen to it.

in my humble opinion, and i'm not well versed in the technicality of music or songwriting, the actual music is good...but lyrically it's very hit or miss, almost as though the band wanted to avoid anything to controversial or moving. i've still been listening to it over and over again via the internet stream and am looking forward to hear the songs evolve on the tour this summer.

IAWTP.
The band has officially jumped the shark. And it's pretty obvious by the first reviews from the mainstream press. They all love it, when the first studio albums from the band came out, critics called them too unruly with the jams, "the band needs a studio wizard to reel in the studio jam sessions," I can remember that from a SPIN review of Crash.
The "Lillywhite Sessions," are the last great batch of songs from the Dave Matthews Band, and pretty much the pinnacle of their music, it's all been downhill from there.

I agree with this post to some degree but his opinion about this being daves 3rd solo albulm is bullshit. This is what the band wanted and I respect them for that. The tunes are better than everyday but I have a bad feeling about the upcoming tour. I think half a set filled with these songs is going to be just like the 2001 tour. Lets just hope Dave doesn't ask the Lovely Ladies to accompany them.

Its Official...the band set out to make a "different" album from all the rest. I would say they were successfull wouldn't you? If you don't like it...don't buy it. Nuff said.

Different doesn't always mean good. Several bands have tried to make something different, but they come back to what got them successful in the first place.
KISS without the makeup would be a glaring example.

I think the mistake was KISS in the first place.

I quit reading the Stand Up discussions....it is more of the same, all the time. One person doesn't like it, says DMB is on the decline, another says DMB is hitting a new peak and so on and so on.....
All I know is I like DMB and I like pretty much whatever music they put out....so THERE!

Well if you'd want something more appealing you could say U2 recent success would stem from thier returning to more simpler roots with the last two albums from the experimental ZooTV period.

Flame away, I know they are coming.
haven't seen this guy on the boards since this post, if someone sees him, tell him he sucks

Joy Ride is good, but Crazy-Easy & Sugar Will aren't too much better than what made it on the CD.
IMO, of the 5 new songs from last Summer, Sugar Will and Crazy Easy were the best.
Sugar Will
Crazy Easy
Hello Again
Good Good Time

If Sugar Will had made the album I would have seriously considered not purchasing it. That song really was pretty bad.
As for the others that got left off, the Good Good Time I heard was quality, and so were the Joy Rides and Crazy-Easys I heard in concert last summer. I really didn't like that Joy Ride album cut though.
Also, there's nothing that says they won't be playing these songs this summer. GGT and SW had a lot of spontaneous improv in them.
