View Full Version : Without considering how it could sound live, what do you think?

I think there is a central point that thread-after-thread misses. We can almost all agree that anything DMB does live will be great. I think this album will be great when it's performed live.

But I've not hidden the fact that I'm dissatisfied with the studio offering. So the key question I am asking in this thread is not "do you like the album?" The question is:

"Do you like the songs as they are presented on the album?

(I apologize if this is a duplicate thread. I just can't think of a reasonable search that will help me find this particular thread in the proverbial haystack.)

Mostly. There is very little lyrical depth, but even BTCS is very lyrically inferior to the first two albums. On simply a music level, I really like it and would rank it behind BTCS, Crash, and UTTAD. The only tracks that bother me musically are the boring Stolen Away and the cheeeeezy Steady As We Go.

Yes. I think I've been listening to DMB for probaly around 10 years, and this is the first time I have ever caught myself humming or singing every song on an album after a few listens. I didn't think I liked Old Dirt Hill at all, but I caught myself humming it today when I was helping my brother move out of his dorm. Very catchy from beginning to end.

There's things that bother me. First off, the lyrics are pretty weak, no getting around this.

Stolen Away is practically begging for a sax interlude and it never comes.
Hello Again, as it is presented, is inferior to versions we've heard.
The background vocals in Old Dirt Hill bother me.
Stand Up actually sounds better on this disc than it did live, but I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.
The "electronic" sounds bug me in some places.

But overall, I think the production is solid, and I think the new direction has some hits and some misses. I think right now, Hunger For The Great Light is growing on me and sounds like a "hit" from the experimentation.

Catchy yes, but it's not something that I would want to hear from DMB. The album is very good IMO, but I'm still trying to figure out why they put Old Dirt Hill on the album. Maybe it will grow on me, but it's not DMB if you know what I mean.

just look at songs like Hello Again, those got us all riled up....I think it's a much better song in live format, because it's missing the dramatic effect the audience gives it.

especially how Warehouse is a totally different track in the studio.

I can see Louisiana Bayou and Old Dirt Hill becoming possible fan favourites

if anything Wake Up

Yes, but what is your opinion of the studio version the band just offered up to you?

the studio album songs are always just a skeleton of what the song will actually become after years of playing it live. overrall the album sounds good but you cant tell how good the songs are until you hear them live for awhile and then go back and listen to the album.

Whatever man. Maybe they've always been a skeleton for what's to come, but there was at least a little tasty meat on the bones as well.

I like the new album. I like the fact that it's different then the stuff they have done in the past. Unlike some of the other people on these forums I like the change. Look I have about 30 gb of DMB on my hardrive and DMB makes up 99% of my listening. If it wasn't for all the different songs they have done over the years I would be bored out of my mind. People are just so picky and dissatisfied with anything that if god had came down personally and made this album eveyone would still be whining:rolleyes

Ok I just heard the album for the first time today.
And it's hard to find a positive thread for the ENTIRE album, so I thought this thread would be fine to post my thoughts in.

I absolutley loved this album. Every single song.
It's hard to rate the songs as far as my favorite and least favorite goes, but I would say Stand Up is my least favorite song. But it's still good.
Very nice guitar riffs on this album. (I learned them all already, PM me if you want tabs.)
I'm really diggin' the direction this band is moving. It gets me moving and dancing a little more, and that's a good thing.
I'm not going to assume anything about these songs being played live, but I can't remember a song that DMB destroyed by playing it live, so things look good.
And with a completely different kind of person in the studio influencing the Band's sound with his different musical background/taste/etc., it turns out to be a nice mixation sensation (and yes I know that term is very faggish and has the flavor of a used douche).
All in all, I'm extremely happy with this album (like I was with all the rest, except maybe Busted Stuff, except for YKN,...too many 'except's)
Here's my song review...(I just decided to do on)
1 Dreamgirl - Very Very nice, one of my favorite songs ever.
2 Stand Up (For It) - Least favorite on album, fun to jam to though.
3 American Baby (Intro) - Good enough for an intro
4 American Baby - Great song, nice outro.
5 Smooth Rider - Sweet ass song, sweet ass lyrics.
6 Old Dirt Hill - Love the music...nuff said.
7 Everybody Wake Up - Not a fan of Dave's voice in parts of the song...still a great song with nifty music.
8 Out Of My Hands - Thank you for finally writing a slow song like this....thank you.
9 Hello Again - WAAAY better live, but still enjoyable.
10 Lousiana Bayou - down by the baYOU...awesome
11 Stolen Away On 55th and 3rd - would be better titled "Stolen Away", but very cool song with a nice climax.
12 You Might Die Trying - Another one of my favs. ever.
13 Steady As We Go - Wow....just..wow...beautiful
14 Hunger For The Great Light - again....wow...

"Mr. Weed, I can't come to work today. I was in a terrible plane crash. My entire family was killed, and I am a vegatable.
....
I'll see you tomorrow" (Family Guy quote neccessary.)

I Love some songs, they all seem a little short though (Smooth Rider is my favorite on the album and its 2:50 :( ) and I actually don't mind Old Dirt Hill to the extent that most people feel its the backstreet boys or whatever, to me the song I don't like is Everybody Wake Up, I'll listen to every song besides that 50-100x over before putting in another cd next week
