BUT it's too short? :) yeah it's short and sweet. It doesn't have to be long because it's nothing great to begin with. It's a cool song.

I meant to say that I really like ALL of the songs on the album... but Smooth Rider is one of the worst songs on the album, meaning it's still a good song, just not as good as the rest of the album.

Is this DMB's shortest song? I don't have a couple of the CD's with me right now but I think it is (outros/intros aside) ...

DMB's shortest for sure. Dave's shortest, too, since Oh clocks in at 2:48.

Ok, as I have said before....SMOOTH RIDER SUCKS
Thank you very much.
P.S. Sugar Will or Good Good Time should be in its place.

Yeah, I wish it were longer also.
To me, Smooth Rider is an interesting song, but not DMB in the least. It's very blues rock, something Claptonesque, or perhaps a Blues Brothers groove. Between the blues style mutation and the length, this is the worst "fit" for DMB on the album. On the jam side, this could be 30 seconds or 20 minutes long, as it's a simple and way overdone blues progression. Throw in a true blues guitarist guest appearance at a show and this song could explode in a very BB King way. This isn't a bad thing, but it's not what I look for at a DMB show.

I can see this song having a crazy Butch solo on the organ in a live setting since that's what it ends with on the album, but maybe it could have a crazy Boyd solo as well? Any takers?
I dunno... While you don't normally think of a violin in rock (even though it wasn't without precident) you REALLY don't think of a violin in blues. Just for the sake of it, I'd like to hear it, but my mind can't fully put the two together.

Smooth Rider is awesome...but I don't see it getting much play..ever. Unless they make it longer live.

This is exactly what I was thinking, and considering it ends so abruptly, I'm thinking an elongated jam live. The bass riff could continue for quite some time.

I've said all along, think back to some of LeRoi's Sugar Will solos, and put that into the end of Smooth Rider. There's your live song.
And yes, PNP, i totally forgot about that one.

This song gets better each time I hear it. Initially, it was my least favorite on Stand Up. Now I wish it was longer.

Perhaps dave could add a verse or two, or just sing the 3rd verse of Grey Street to make it longer!

I wouldnt call PNP a song, cause if it were a song, itd be played without Rapunzel. I consider it an outro, but thats just me.

I love the overall sound. The groove is great. I like the bass line and the way it meshes with the 'sugar will-esque" sound. I can only imagine how a great alto sax jam will fit with this song, but in my head it will be great live. I also love the sound in dave's voice while he sings it.

Smooth Rider is the finest song on the album. For a band to accomplish so much in so short of time is beyond my mind. Look, it's not an extended jam band song, it's a soul tune. It takes me back to the soul I was raised by mother. It's O.V. Wright, it's Al Green, it's Sam Cooke, it's Freddie Scott, it's Dave Matthews. Find Freddie Scott's "Am I Grooving You?" and you'll know what I'm talking about. I've listened to this song, due to it's length or lack there of, more than any other on the album. It's Dave's classic narrative lyrics, it's the new raspy, I smoke too much, voice of Dave. It's Carter's incredible clarity and exceptional minimalism. It's Butch's immaculate sense of the blues piano. It's Mark Batson. It's hot. This is soul. This is much more than we could have ever expected from DMB. This is the biggest departure for the band because of how intentionally truncated it is. Sam Cooke defined soul by humming 27 seconds of bar progession and DMB redefined soul with Smooth Rider.

Seriously, Freddie Scott's "Am I grooving You." Find it. Listen to it before, after and in between Smooth Rider. Peacedom.

fist thing to NOTE on this track since I love it. Butch is NOT I repeat NOT playing keys , that's Mark Batson thankfully. Otherwise we would have ended up with some cheesy keyboard sound .
second....try the search option next time before creating a new thread.

This song is amazing, i agree, I can't wait to here this song long and live. IMO it's one of the best three songs on the album, the bluesy kinda feel is great.

Smooth Rider I believe might be the best song on the album, and it has the best jam feel around it and it's too fucking short. The album is bad, guys, com on, I think as an album it just doesn't have a good feel, and I hate to say this, but Everyday might be a better ALBUM and I HATE everyday. Some devil is most definitely a better album. And why is it that people don't like LA Bayou? I like that song. And I think Die Trying would be a great song if it wasn't for that beat box. What the fuck is that doing there? It probably sounds awesome live.
