Ok...I wanted to wait until I listened to the album at least 10 times before I made any comments...and honestly, I can say that my opinion hasn't actually changed that much, but I wanted to give a few of the weaker songs a little bit of time to kinda bring their own beat back for a second chance...
Overall, I do belive it is a weak DMB album...however, there are a few gems that may turn out to make it worth it.
I want to start by questioning the lives of those great songs we heard progress over the last tour...only Hello Again made it?! I have great copies of each show from last tour and a lot of the Hello Again's SOUND BETTER than they do after having been introduced to million dollar equipment and this new "producer". (TONS OF LOVE TO THE DMB TAPERS)
I can feel myself starting to get heated, so I have decided to cut this short...
THE GOOD TRACKS:
Old Dirt Hill- fuckin a'...sick ass jam, but the whole "bring that beat back to me again" thing is kinda annoying (the line AND the singing-is that Stefan?) It sounds like someone said that in the studio and they (must have) talked Dave into using that line...UNLESS you think of it as saying "remember those times?"...then it kinda gets interesting...
Louisianna Bayou-hell yeah...probably second best track..can't wait to rock out to this on tour...
Stolen Away...-STAND OUT TRACK. I almost hear it on Some Devil...although Leroi really knocks this one out...He is the unsung hero of the group.
Most of the other songs (and even these, hence the repetition of verses) sound like they were forced from ideas, which is basically how they have been describing the album writing...
Good DMB songs come from a much more organic place...if you force it, you get EVERYDAY, you ruin BUSTED STUFF, and you get STAND UP.
It's unfortunate, but it happens to all bands...well, TOOL is still keeping it real.
I LOVE DMB. Dont get me wrong...it's our jobs as fans to demand the best from the artists that we love, otherwise they get complacent and are ok with putting out material like this...something that 10 years ago, I really think they would have fought to avoid.
Listening to it now of course, and in closing, I have to say that while Stand Up (and Everyday for that matter) really dont represent the DMB I grew up with, I still pop these CD's in all the time and hardly ever hit the skip button...and there is a whole lot to say for that.
SEE YOU AT SBC PARK.
