Well i heard this disc in full twice today while driving to moms for mothers day.
i cant say i love it, but i cant say i hate it either.
there are a handful of great songs, but something seems to be missing from alot of them.

I think my main problem with this album is that it isnt a "DMB" sound. That is a good and bad thing. It seems to be a great album to "listen" to but i prefer rocking out in my car to it. The lyrics/way dave sings the songs seem very "tired" and not too catchy. I think the melodies on alot of these songs are great, but they almost seem like rough incomplete versions.
I think the album starts off fairly well, but dies after Bayou.

Dreamgril, Old Dirt Hill, American Baby, Hello Again>Bayou, Everybody Wake Up are the songs that I am confident will blow us away live when the "effects" are taken away and its straight up DMB.

I will be listening to this album regularly b/c I do like it, but i also understand why people dont.

This album is best when listened to after getting high, and cranking it on a loud volume.

Everybody Wake up is a good melody and starts off SO hot, but dies somewhere in the middle.
Bayou is so funky, but daves voice doesnt shine on this track at all like it should.

Again, i think this album is better off heard after weve heard the live tracks. I just find it hard to "sing along" or "play guitar to" which is what most dmb songs in the past had.

By no means is this album a bad album, i do like it....but i also dont.

it is missing one solid song to make this album better.

also--i HATE the last four tracks in terms of sequencing the album. the last song sounds weird after the songs ends the violin comes in. just seems misplaced.

i think the american baby intro is the best 1:00 on the album.
also- last point---the songs have good moments IN THEM, but as a whole, they dont work FROM THE STUDIO,.

I think once dave sings and plays these songs live, we will heard the new versions (as they have to add more guitar and boyd/roi to some sons) and i am confident i will be satisfied with this album once they rock live.

Are all 70,000 ants going to have a "my feelings about SU" thread?

Exactly right. I've been listening to DMB for about 4-5 years now and it's gotten to where their all that I listen to. I sort of took every album as I heard it, like a general sound. I never really hated Everyday, just the fact that the other songs on the album were overlooked. His solo cd really surprised me with how it sounded and it became my #1 driving in the rain cd. With Stand Up, I sort of expected something different as soon as it was announced. Especially when they started mentioning their new spin on recording stuff and the feelings they had recording it, like this sort of "we're breaking ground" feeling. I also agree that these songs will be awesome live. I think once 3-4 songs from the album are accepted and put in regular concert rotation that everthing will be fine. It's just the new of it all. Personally, I love it. The lyrics on some songs may not be insanely deep, but I think overall it's a good improvement over Busted Stuff for the band.

I'm thinking about starting my own thread. I have remained silent far too long! I may even start five.

I like the album, but I wouldn't say it was an improvement over BS. It's close to the quality of BS, which is a releif since I wasn't expecting much after ED.

It's funny ... I listened to Stand Up today for the first time in 4 or 5 days ... then went and listened to Everyday. I found myself liking Everyday more ... because of Stand Up. I think I really wasn't tolerant of that drastic of a DMB change at the time but I actually kind dug the album today. Wierd.

everyday had some great songs on it. they may not have sounded like dmb on the album at the time, but that album brought some great songs to the live catalog.

as far as busted stuff, the album was bad before we heard it. it just had bad blood written all over it. after the lillywhite fiasco, they needed to put something out, they wrote two new songs for busted stuff and scrapped the two best song from lillywhite (sweet up, jtr) and busted stuff had no emotion on it at all. also most of the songs (busted stuff, raven, grey st, grace, kkjam, bartender) were played on the summer 2000 tour, after the initial "lillywhite session" trackings. two years later, they came out on busted stuff and we had already heard such great live versions, that these songs were not interesting on the studio cd.

everyday and stand up have one good thing in common. they cant re-create these songs live the way that they do on the album. they are too produced. so the albums themselves might not be the best (i love everyday for the record) but the songs that come out of them will be good.

If I had done it half a week ago, it might still be relevant, but I can't compete with the Daily News and Entertainment Weekly, let alone All Music Guide. :)

Seriously, I just think there are too many new threads being created and I'm not about to start my own. Also I don't feel that any new album by any artist, whether good or bad, deserves this much attention, positive or negative.
