Anyone remember the PR work for Everyday, where the band just focused on Dave's writing--I remember seeing Carter talking about how this was "some of the best writing Dave's ever done", and all he really said about the music "I feel the drums on this album are really strong".
The guys didn't lie to us--they just omitted certain things and picked their words carefully (which all kind of fell out in the Rolling Stone article later).
When I hear Dave talk about how it was "effortless", and Stefan talking excitedly about Batson's spontaneity, and all of them talking about how it really felt like the whole band wrote this record... I don't think they're lying. There may have been things they didn't like about the process, but most of what they've said to the cameras truly sounds like they were happy with the sessions, and that they were having fun.
