Well im a drumemr, but i dont really play hand drums all that much.. all ic an really tell you about them is to really be carefull with your hand positions. (not sur eif you alreayd knwo this or not) you can really hurt your fingers, mainly your thumb, if you dont keep your hand in the correct position. if i recall correctly, i find that its best to extend your fingers back( almost liek your getting ready a for a retarded high five) and strike the drum with the middle rather then the tips of your fingers.

It all depends on the sound you want. Each part of the hand makes a different sound, not to mention the different ways you can hit the drum with each part of the hand. Experiment.

I used to play bongos in a jazz band and it proper knackers your fingers until you're used to playing. Make sure you crank up your heads cos bongos are meant to be real high. You should mainly play with your hands in a curled shape. There are three main types of strike, probably derived from Djembe playing. hit the drum with your hand flat on top, hit him so that your hand curls over the rim and for solo type bits bring your hands further back and give them a good slappign across the rim. This will give you three sounds, one muted, one for general playing and one louder and a wee bit more resonant.
