Im doing a survey, and wanted to know what you like better, Martin Acoustics, or Taylor Acoustics, and WHY?
also info needed
Age
Male or Female
I usually enjoy reading your threads and posts, Chad, but this is just silly. What do you hope to accomplish, aside from arguments? From experience, I can tell you that people get heated in such "debate;" it's the same idea as comparing BMW and Mercedes. Two different types of vehicles that people insist upon comparing. Same thing with Taylor and Martin, and it's not going to be any less heated.

I myself have a Taylor, and my good friend has a Martin so i experience both guitars...Personally i like Taylors because the sound is much quicker and cleaner whereas the Martin guitars are very deep. I feel for the amount of money you are spending on a Taylor, you are getting great sound. For Martin, i feel you have to spend more money to get that richer sound (my friend happens to have a high priced Martin) So overall it depends on the models, but my vote goes to Taylor

I got to chime in i agree this is pointless but i think that a martin d-28 is the benchmark of guitar tone. But that is just my opinion

Taylor!?! You low down sons of bitches!
:p Just kidding. I swear this topic is gonna get deep. Never have I played a Taylor. I love Martin guitars. So until I play a Taylor I will stay undecided. (unless someone wants to ship their Taylor to me so I can play it for the good of this topic) :D 18/M

Both companies put out great guitars. Though I have never owned a Taylor, I watched after my buddies when he went to Australia - great guitar, wanna say 414 model? I liked it very much. I however prefer Martins for a couple reasons. One, My first great acoustic guitar was a Martin. Two, I have fallen in love with the rich tone produced Martin guitars. Three, my initial lesson teacher was a die hard Martin fanatic and I am sure that has rubbed off on me somewhat. Finally, I am used to Martins and the feel they have the sounds they produce, only relatively recently have I started playing different Taylor models (the music shops back home carried Martins, not Taylors). However, I do think that the Baby Taylors are so far superior to the backpacker Martins it is unreal, but that is where I would draw the line.
I also agree with the majority of the statements in this thread. People have choices and preferences and may like different things about different guitars. When it comes down to it, you are the one playing the instrument so it really shouldn't matter what anybody else thinks about it. If people are Taylor guitar lovers, I understand as they are very quality guitars. Likewise with Taylors.

I'll honestly say that I like them both equally. Its kind of like when a child asks his mom or dad who they like better, him or his sister...I will say this though. Taylors have a slightly wider fret board than Martins, which I find a set back for me at times. If I could have a Martins fretboard on a Taylor than I'd be one happy individual. As far as style and pizazze I think Taylors got Martin beat. As far as sound goes between the two, there are days when I can appreciate the deep rich tone of a Martin over a Taylor, and there are days when a Taylors tone really gets me off. So like I said before I kind of like them both equally.

I used to look at Dave playing Taylors and think that Taylors must be better than Martins. However, just recently the guy that runs the guitar shop down from my house recently enlightened me to two things which make a world of sense...The first being that Dave has fuzz busters installed in pretty much everyone of his guitars. So as far as milking a Taylor for every last bit of sound that it can produce a fuzz buster pretty much puts the breaks on that idea. Sencondly, he told me that you could install a Taylor pick up in say a cheap beginners Ibanez acoustic and guess what its gonna sound like?, especially if you use a fuzz buster as well. I'm not entirely certain that all this is true, but it is kind of wild if you think about it!

I have a Taylor......not because Dave plays them.
I have played many Martins.....and they are wonderful guitars.
I have said this in every single Martin vs. Taylor thread......I would have a Martin if my hand didn't cramp up like a little bitch every time I played one.
The neck profile just does not work for me....it makes my hand hurt like hell.
The sound and quality of my Taylor is awesome....I love it....and it doesn't hurt my fretting hand.

this is a bad place to do this survey. I've posted on DMB messageboards since 1997 and nobody NOBODY had Taylors back then. Dave's had a lot of influence popularizing the 14 series around here in the community, no dobt....even if you say you have one in spite of the fact that Dave plays one predominately. That being said, I have 2 Martin 6 strings and a Taylor 12. I prefer the Martin sound. Bye

At my house we have both a Taylor 214 and a Martin DCX1E and I play the Martin a whole lot more than the Taylor, so Martin.

It depends on the kind of sound/tone you want.
Martins have a mellower/dampened tone.
Taylors have a brighter/sharper tone.
Both brands are high-end guitars, and any guitar from any company is a good guitar.
I prefer Taylors, though.

Before I bought my most recent guitar, I literally played 30-40 different guitars. I wasn't too concerned about the price as long as it was under a couple thousand dollars. After playing other brands, Martins and Taylors I decided that my personal preference is the Martin and more specifically, the Martin d16gt. Suprisingly it is one of the cheaper models. I had planned on spending more money than this cost, but I found no other guitar that sounded as good as this guitar including the 3k guitars.
I personally do not like the Martin strings, so I threw on Elixir Nanowebs(med-.012). I have never heard a guitar that makes a better D chord than this guitar. It is simply beautiful. Even my gf was impressed with the sound(teaches music). The only downfall with this is the E string occassionally buzzes which I think might have something to do with putting different strings on. It doesn't have as good a bass sound as some of the Taylors I played, but the 1-4 strings play so crisp and beautiful.

I have a D-28 and I am buying a 7 series Taylor in about a week or so. They are both great guitars and it is all a matter of taste. I think that Taylor is ahead of the game when it comes to the "expression system" as I had to install a Fishman in my D-28. I have no preference, they are both great in their own right. So I guess I am Neutral.

We all know they have different tones, if it's a science project why not base
it on construction and tonewoods contributing to the sound of each.
2 guitars constructed identiclly with different tone woods ( rosewood back and sides & cedar top vs. mahogany back and sides & spruce top) will sound quite different from eachother. Throw in different bracing schemes, neck and bridge construction, scale length etc and they'll really each have a unique voice.
In a science project, only conclusions resulting from data analysis, not opinions, make it viable.
Just my $.02
Oh and I picked my taylor 414ce limited based on tone and playability over all the guitars in the store at that price point.
