i personally think daves best guitar over the years is either the chet atkins gibson or the 714 taylor. i have the gibson and dont think ive heard anything better up to this point, the 714 is right behind it

I really like both the Martin DM3MD (I think is the model) and the Lakewood. Of course, I'd love to have any of them, but those two would be my choices.

It'd be between his sig model and the HD-28 for me. The Chet is an absolute piece of trash, completely modified for a single purpose. Now that other guitars can do what he wants, it's in the garbage can where it belongs, buzzing merrily on its way to hell.

What are the differences between the Martin DM and the standard model?
3-piece headstock, specially-shaped neck, sourcing of the rosewood, and Dave's signature. Don't get me wrong- the guitar doesn't "work" for me when I play it (really odd neck shape), but it certainly did for him.

What's "odd" about the neck shape on the sig model? I've never had the priveledge of playing one.
Totally different shape than what most are accustomed to. On Dave's Chets, one of the many modifications he made included working the neck down into a more managable shape. This shaved neck was copied for the sig model.

I'm going with the chet. Not saying it's better than a taylor but it's just a distinct sound that signifys the dmb. Even if that sound is buzzy and thin, it's still that classic sound.

Not to be nitpicky, but it's not a CE...dave (and most people with pro soundmen at the helm) aren't fans of onboard preamps. He has a fishman pickup in the 914c.

No, you played the typical Chet. They're complete pieces of trash. The examples Dave had were modified to the point where they were totally different guitars, and even that barely made them listenable.

We'll never know. I got Dave to pee in it once, and I'm storing the pee in the guitar to keep it humidified and in case I ever need to run a drug test on it for blackmail purposes. I got a picture as well so we can verify authenticity when the time comes.

:thumbsup The regular Chet Atkins SST isn't on par with any of Dave's other guitars, but it's a helluva guitar after the modifications.
This wasn't on the list, and I don't believe Dave uses it in concert, either, but the Taylor T5 would easily make its way to the top of my list of favorite guitars ever.

Dave's guitar collection is crazy. I'd love to have one like his. I spoke with the guy he bought most of his Taylor's from, and the guys at Taylor. He has 2 of the prototype Baritone Taylors, 6 of the 714, 4 of the 914c, 1 of the 914c with the florentine cutaway, 3 W65's...then you get into his Martins, Lakewoods, Santa Cruz, Jerry Jones, Gibsons. A very cool collection.
As for best sound...the DM3MD or 914c. The neck on the DM3MD reminds me of the original Martins from the 20's and 30's, the V shape. I personally like them, but it is different a little awkward at first.
