Buckeyes are gonna stomp all over the 2nd and 3rd tier Big Ten teams. Iowa and scUM are the focus. We got lightning at WR and the best LB corps in the country. With even consistent QB play this Buckeye team could will be more dynamic than our 2002 championship team (my freshman year) and our D believe it or not may be even better. LET'S GO BUCKS.
P.S. - great to see a thread like this on the board. Props to the thread starter.

If our offense puts points on the board, look out. This team will be very dangerous. I don't see why we shouldn't score with our talent at WR. I'm not worried about the defense. Every article I have read says they are better than the '02 team.

Every university breaks NCAA rules, it's just a matter of getting caught. The NCAA has turned into a joke.
...and that basketball thing. Jim O'Brien is actually suing the university now because it was found that he did not illegally give money to players. Since he was fired, he's trying to get his contract paid in full.

Sounds like a wolverine has ND envy to me! GO IRISH!!!
I hope Weis can turn things around- its been real real tough.
And by the way, the OSU fans that invaded South Bend a few years back were the most classless fans I've ever seen (and I've been to Fla. St. and Miami games). Michigan fans are great fans, always respectful.

And speaking of classless fans, when we went to Michigan for a game, they threw marshmallows at us that were frozen and stuffed with pennies. Talk about classless. All schools have idiots. Hell, go to a DMB concert and you'll see plenty of fools.

"Woody, can you tell me why, when you were up by 2 touchdowns, and after you scored another one late in the game, you chose to go for 2 on the point after?"
-Reporter asking Woody Hayes about going for two after a late 4th quarter touchdown against rival Michigan

How many of you guys remember or have seen the Ewe von Schamann field goal with six seconds left in Oklahoma's 29-28 win over OSU in 1977? You remember don't you? OU scored with a couple of minutes to play. Went for two to tie. Missed. Recovered the onside kick. Got in field goal position. During the timeout, the Ohio St student body started a "Block That Kick" chant. Von Schamann decides to go over to the Ohio St student section to lead the cheer. Waives his arms for them to get louder, and acts as if he's conducting an orchestra. Then he procedes to go out and kick a 40+ yard field goal right down the middle. The OU team rushes the field for a dog pile. Man, what a beautiful moment. If you haven't seen it you can always catch it on ESPN Classic sometime. What a classic it was.

Notre Dame, at the moment, is the top program of all time. Everything after that is debatable. You can rank them using many categories. Wins, winning percentage, conference championships, bowl games, bowl games won, Heisman Trophy's, national championships. You could also use national championships since 1950, which is valid since the level of competition was not nearly as strong before that time as it has become since.
Here's my list with some random statistics off the top of my head
Top 5 (no particular order after Notre Dame)
Notre Dame (8 national championships)
Oklahoma (7 national titles (all since 1950), 39 conference championships, 23 bowl championships, 4 Heisman Trophy's, 47 game win streak (division 1 record)
Michigan
Alabama (7 national championships - will claim 12+, but only 7 are legit)
USC (7 national championships - will claim more)
Next 5 (no particular order)
Nebraska (5 national championships)
Ohio St.
Texas (3 national championships)
Miami (5 national championships)
Penn St.

At least we play a challenging non-conference schedule. Here are some of the big non-conference teams OSU will be playing over the next several years:
2005: Texas
2006: Texas
2007: Washington, Syracuse
2008: Fresno St., USC
2009: USC, Washington St.
2010: Miami Fl., Syracuse
2011: Miami Fl.
Also, there are rumors beyond this that OSU is trying to schedule some games with Florida State and Virginia Tech.

Nice thread! Grew up in Dublin, still a Buckeye for life.
We are stacked this year! Rock-Solid D and an unbelievable 1-2 punch at WR with Ginn Jr and Holmes. Troy Smith looked like a young Donovan McNabb last year, just hope he isn't rusty against Texas since he has to sit out the Miami (OH) game. So is Pittman going to be the man at RB or will Wells take the country by storm as a freshman?
That Texas game is going to be HUGE!!
I'm going to the OSU-Minnesota game on Oct. 29th, probably the only one I'll be able to make. I got an AJ Hawk jersey for Christmas last year, I will be rocking it at the Dome that day. (And every other Saturday).
Michigan, you guys are fucked as long we have Tressel. He's our secret weapon!

Greetings up in Gopherland! It's always great to hear from Buckeyes in other parts of the country. It looks like Pittman has an edge at running back. It also looks like we are very deep at WR beyond Ginn and Holmes.
Sophomore Antonio Pittman is coming off an impressive spring showing and unquestionably has the edge, but redshirt freshman Erik Haw and true freshman Maurice Wells will have ample opportunity to strut their stuff.
My favorite quote:
Ginn simply takes speed to another level. NO DEFENDER EVER has an angle on him when he gets in the open field.

And when you play in the Big Ten is ballsy to take on a team like Texas. Regardless of what people think of the Big Ten, lack of big time offense, too much defense, whatever...Big Ten teams beat the shit out of each other ever year. Nothing like seeing a tight low scoring defensive battle in November that could be won a single huge play IMO.

Man, I'm getting more and more excited for the season, especially after the year the Reds are having. I won't be going to any of the games before school but I will be there in "Block O" for all 4 Big Ten games during the school year. I can't wait to get up to Columbus and buy a new football jersey for this year. I got an AJ Hawk jersey last year, but this year I think I gotta get a #7. I'm gonna get the white away one just to get something different. I was also thinking of just getting "Heisman '05" stitched on it ;)
I found this from the Dayton Daily News "5 Questions with..." segment with Nick Mangold yesterday:
Q: What's the last concert you attended?
A: "Dave Matthews Band in Columbus. It was weird in high school, I had a bunch of friends who really liked Dave. But I didn't get into him much. In college, being around (teammate) A.J. Hawk, he's a huge fan and passed it on to me. I've become a pretty big fan myself."
Pretty cool to see not only are the OSU guys good football players, but they also have good taste in music.
I can't wait until Jan 2006 when the Bucks will be playing in the Grand-daddy of them all for the Natn'l Title!

I'm not going to post in the Penn State thread because we'll piss them off again, but I find it amusing that they think if they start 5-0, they will beat the Bucks.
Let's look at their first five games:
South Florida (H)
Cincinnati (H)
Central Michigan (H)
Northwestern (A)
Minnesota (H)
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the Buckeyes might be just a tad better than those 5 JV teams.

There is something to be said for momentum and confidence. I would agree that their chances would be much better if they go in 5-0 instead of 4-1 with a loss to Minnesota. It would be a completely different atmosphere. I remember during the 2000 season thinking if we could just beat texas and get to 5-0 then we might have a shot at KState next week. We did beat texas and things just kept rolling from there. You never know!

I agree! Confidence and momentum are very important. I think that is what has helped the Bucks in their previous bowl games. I just find it amusing that someone can say, "we will win the OSU game". That's a bold statement. Perhaps, "better chance" would be more appropriate. Too much confidence can be a killer. It's going to be a completely different ballgame than their first five. But this is all pointless because the chances of Penn St. being 5-0 are slim.
I'm anxious for 9/10 vs. Texas. :multi

I normally don't like to make outlandish OSU predictions like so many fans I know do, but I feel really good about the team this season. They offense should be as explosive as any in the nation through the air, and I expect that one of the kids will step up and establish the running back position. Students do have the option to pay to upgrade their tickets so others can use them. If the student goes to the ticket office and pays the difference then the ticket can be used by a regular person. Also, from what I hear, you can pretty much use a fake ID if you are smart and get in. Just take an ID, put your picture on and give it a try. I heard last year about kids doing it and just going around until they found a gate they could get in.

Ohio State Football to help victims of Katrina:
http://ohiostatebuckeyes.collegesports.com/genrel/090105aaa.html
Athletics will donate $2 from every program sold at four September home games to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. The games are Saturday against Miami University, Sept. 10 vs. Texas, Sept. 17 vs. San Diego State and Sept. 24 vs. Iowa. The programs will cost $7, and a total of 76,000 programs will be available for those four games.
Additionally, cash donations will be accepted at seven locations in Ohio Stadium where merchandise already is sold and the locations are secure: gates 11A, 12A, 23A, 24A, on the Huntington Club level, in the South Stadium area at gate 39A, and on the East side of C deck, at Section16.

Can't wait till tomorrow. I wish I had gotten tickets, but things didn't work out so I won't be too mad watching at home. I can already feel the excitement thinking of the atmosphere that will be Columbus tomorrow. The traffic as fans arrive at 8 am or earlier to begin the tailgates. The morning mist as the first beers are popped open and the first food hitting the grill. The excitement around 10 as the band performs in the skull session then marches out over to the stadium. The green of the field as fans enter into the stands and first survey the Horseshoe.
Then, as kickoff approaches. TBDBITL will come out onto the field to ramp and then fight the team. The first kickoff as the entire sea of scarlet and gray yells "O - H - I - O."
Then, the great parties after the game as for one afternoon, everything will be perfect in "Old Columbus Town."

Good win, OSU will have to play better next week if they want to win. We missed several scoring opportunities in the first half where we settled for field goals when we need to punch it in for the TD. Minus those redzone troubles, it was a big win. Nice to Zwick come out and play well. He should start next week with Smith coming in later to add some different looks. Also a good performance by Pittman. I hope he can continue to mature and help the running game step up this year and be dominant like in 2002. I hope OSU can have a great week of practice and come out and mess with Texas.
How about OU? Less than a minute left and I'm shocked they are going to lose. Unbelievable, but we have to keep rooting for top 10 teams to lose to help secure OSU on their way to the National Title game!

Big decision here that I'm surprised hasn't gotten any talk:
Zwick or Smith next week?
I'd have to say Zwick earned the start with his performance this week. He has kept his nose clean, worked hard, and it showed in today's great performance. I think he starts and gets at least the first several series. Then, if the offense is struggling or he's not performing, Smith gets a chance. I'd say keeping this mum until the end of the week will work best for Coach Tress, then Texas won't have any clue who to plan for. Smith can hopefully play some meaningful minutes off the bench to give that extra running dimension to the quarterback position.

I think Tressel already said that both QB's will play. It's only fair to let Zwick start. Plus he's in a rhythm and fresh off a nice win. It's a nice problem to have!

I'd go with Smith, just because I think he fits the new style of O they were running. Adding a bit of spread option to the attack would be amazing. I think Zwick is a more accuarte passer than Troy, but the majority of the throws Zwick made yesterday were less than 5 yards. I don't think they can go wrong either way.

Tressel once again has proven he is a genius. Why wait to announce a starter early in the week? Make Texas prepare for two completely different QBs. Personally I think Smith should be the man, he earned it by coming up huge against Michigan last year. I have never been so excited about a Buckeye offense, teams are so worried about letting Ginn beat them they leave everyone else wide open.

Texas fans seem to be talking a lot of smack about how they are going to roll into C-bus and stomp us. We have only lost at home 1 time since my freshman year and have 36 game win streak vs. non-conference opponents at home. That bodes very bad for anyone, including Texas.

Yeah, this reminds me a lot of the Miami game in the Fiesta Bowl. Talk a bunch of shit and get no respect.... until we smack them around. Welcome to Big Ten Land, Mr. Young. We play DEFENSE!

From ESPN: Texas-Ohio State Tickets Hard To Come By (http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=2155779)
Tickets are at a premium. Sellers on eBay are asking up to $1,500 for a ticket with a face value of $58.
There were 67 ticket ads in Thursday's editions of The (Columbus) Dispatch. They ranged from the warm and familial, "Father/son need two Texas tickets" and "Dedicated group of OSU fans and alumni need tickets" to the succinct "Two OSU-Texas tickets, $2,500."

I am pissed off to say the least. I think instead of kicking the 50 yard field goal they should have punted the ball, could have made a difference. Also the switching qb's is fucking stupid and the should have just kept zwick out of the game. what the hell.
Not sure what is going to happen to OSU now. IS it still possible for the chance to go to the rose bowl? or is that completely out of the picture now? Surely they would have to win all of the remainder of the games.

We had our chances, when Hawk made the INT and we had the ball at the 20 and couldn't jam it in was ridiculous
Putting Zwick in with 2 mins left and not Smith was just mind boggling. That could have been the worst judgement call I've ever seen Tressel make.

I'm still kind of in shock about the whole thing. It was one of those games where OSU seemed liked they should have won big, but somehow they lost. I wasn't impressed with Vince Young. I think he'll get better, but he tries to do too much. Did someone forget to tell Ginn that last night was a big game? He was basically invisible on O. I don't know how I feel about the QB situation. Zwick is a better passer, but I think the team would have been more likely to score with Troy in the game. It's a tough situation for Tressel. I think they are about as equal as 2 players could be. There might not be a right answer for the next 2 years.

I still can't believe we lost that game. When Zwick came out for that last drive I knew the game was over. This QB shuffle is ridiculous, it's bringing back nightmares of the Joe Germaine/Stanley Jackson platoon. Isn't it blatantly obvious that Smith is worlds better than Zwick or is it just me? I guess I can't be mad at Tressel because of 2002, but seriously he just made John Cooper look like Vince fucking Lombardi. This team is so talented, and now the dreams of a National Championship are all but over. But I guess championship teams don't lose games like this.
I think we are going to roll through the conference, the Big 10 that looked so strong on paper doesn't look so strong any more.
Well, bring on the Aztecs, all we can do now is hope a bunch of other teams lose.

Championship dreams are not over, but they are definitely out of our own hands. We need help from other teams now. At least it's early in the year and we lost to a #2 team.
I hate polls. How can we drop as much as we did? We were "supposed" to lose that game according to the polls. A #4 team losing to a #2 shouldn't drop a lot, if at all. I would say a #2 team is about 3 points better than a #4. :)

You were the home team and a 1.5 point favorite so you were actually "supposed" to win the game. I believe home field translates to 4-6 points on the spread, meaning texas probably would have been a three or four point favorite in Austin.

And don't be upset just b/c after scUM's lost and our beat down of Iowa - how bad was it? Halftime total yds OSU: 331, Iowa 13 - OSU is now the front runner in the Big Ten. Mich St. will not come into the 'Shoe and win and that will put us in the driver seat to win the Big Ten.

I'm sure Matt Leinert is getting something for free at USC from boosters. Come on. No one really believes that he just decided to stay. I am sure there were plenty of reasons (money and gifts) to convince him to stay his last year. Just look at any magazine and you see that he is on everyone's Hollywood A list. I'm sure that gets him free meals and a decent car to "borrow" at the minimum.
I'd love to see OSU go to Pasadena and beat up on USC like they did Miami in 2002. (Yes, even though the game ended after double overtime, OSU beat up Miami. OSU was much more physical, which should be expected of a team from the Big Ten.)
Can anyone verify that if Wisconsin wins out OSU won't get the automatic bid to a BCS game because OSU has been to the BCS game more recently than Wisconsin? I think that is how the decision is made, but not sure.

It's kind of a mute point. If sconsin wins out they'll be undefeated and deserved and BCS birth. If we win out we'd almost have to be an atlarge team. If everyone has a Big 11 loss I believe the team to go would be the team who has not been to a BCS game recently. I think they'll lose somewhere along the line.

I was freezing in my Buckeye football T-shirt. People around me were offering to give me a pancho, but they were all Wisconsin panchos so I didn't bother. Screw Wisconsin and their panchos. I am slightly concerned that Wisconsin may go undefeated in the Big Ten - dont know their exact schedule - but i'm sure Penn State or Mich St or Minnesota will knock them. Hell, if Iowa can get their act together thats another viable loss.
The Penn State game will definitely be a test (night, road trap game ala Wisco in 2003 and NW in '04).
Although, I'm pretty much convinced, after that Iowa thrashing, that our offense has come around and we are in fact the 3rd or 4th best (Va Tech is NASTY as well and deserves props) team in the nation.

Ohio State would have won if either QB played the entire game. Zwick had to overcome so pretty big dropped passes (Hamby :BANG ) although the fumble at the end of the game was horrible. Zwick could have won the game as easily as Troy Smith. Tressel is a very good coach, but that game was poorly called and jeking the QBs in and out and didn't help that at all. OSU is putting the ball on the floor way too much. Two lost fumbles within the ten yard line against Iowa is unacceptable. Smith fumbled three times in the game. That is unacceptable. Those type plays could cost them another loss and any chance at a national championship. When OSU won the NC, Krenzel was not fumbling three times per game.
My biggest issue is now I have to pay attention to all these other games...VT v. WV, Miami v. VT, UT v. Texas Tech, USC v. ASU. Every Saturday is booked with CFB. :D

Not trying to be an ass, just sayin that if Smith played the whole game we'd still be undefeated.
you dont know that... prob not.

When Zwick came out for that final drive I knew the game was over. I am just disappointed because this is a national championship caliber team and we should have won that game, especially at home.

I think Tressel is a great coach and will always love him for 2002, but it's natural to second guess. It's kind of like when DMB comes out with a song like Old Dirt Hill.

Football is a 60 minute game, so blaming one play as the cause of a loss is foolish. It definitely hurt, but I think the fact that we couldn't close the deal on our scoring opportunities hurt us overall more than a turnover. My problem with playing Zwick is that the O we've moved to is designed to take advantage of the explosiveness at the skill positions, and Zwick doesn't present the challenge to the oppostion that Smith does. If we were to line up in a traditional sets with Holmes and Gonzales at reciever, Ginn playing in the slot when needed, Zwick would be much more effective. They are both good quarterbacks, and either could be successful as long as the gameplan is tailored to their skills.

I hope Penn State doesn't look past Minnesota because they are a solid team. I'm getting excited for the Penn State game though :D

Maybe I'm biased because I live up in Minneapolis, but I think the Gophers are going to beat Penn State pretty easily. Once the Bucks had the Iowa game in the bag, I flipped over to the Minn-Purdue game and that was an amazing game. Laurence Maroney is a STUD. I'm not too impressed with PSU.
The game I have circled on my calender is Oct. 15th vs. Michigan State. That should be toughest game left on the schedule.
I can't wait to blow out Michigan in the Big House!

Agreed about MSU. It will be fun chearing for MSU this weekend. The last regular season game against that school up north should be a rout :twak . Too bad TG Jr. isn't getting the ball enough to be a heisman cadidate. I'd love to see him run a punt or kick-off back and do the heisman pose in the endzone. (No, I'm not bitter. :o )

Looks like the Penn State game next week will be a good one! I'm confident in our defense, I just hope we don't turn the ball over 5 times.

Penn State is going to be a very challenging game next week. Offense has to show up b/c if we put a lot points on the board there is no way Penn State can match it against our defense.
