You know, I was always on the fence about Billy. Thought he was talented and had some good songs but never really "got" him like everyone else did. But, after his phone call and in the studio today, I have a new found respect for him, basically because he just seems like a normal every day dude. That always seems to happen with guests. Someone seems like an arrogant prick or a huge bitch and they come on and you're just like "hey, they are actually pretty normal and funny." Easily one of my favorite parts of the show and Howard as an interviewer.

I especially thought it was interesting when Billy talked about Steve Winwood being his piano idol and how he's one of the few he actually gets shy around. I really discovered Winwood a couple years ago and he has become one of my favorites and it was cool to hear Billy talk about being a fan of his. Just a real great interview.

I think thats why, it got a little too much for the host, at least thats all I could make out from it. Chick was hot though.

The show has lost its comedy. How many times over the last few months did you really laugh? I can think of a couple - Gary's lists, Gilbert today, and a recording of Artie calling in laughing at Gary's pitch. The rest of the show is just interviews and commentary on the world.

I'll still listen, but it is not a comedy show anymore and I don't understand why.

Agree, the laughs aren't the same. If they announce they will continue the show, they really need to look into filling that chair. This week did deal with some great interviews though, and that took up a lot of time, which I did enjoy. But like I said, if they continue they need to hire someone.

Booey book is really good. He's going through the videotape episode now.

What I didn't realize and he apparently made public on the show was HE was the one who provided the video tape. I thought the guy provided the tape that called in. It was Gary who did. He explains why in the book.

Listening to Billy Joel now in its entirety. Really good stuff.

I've long since accepted that Artie wouldn't be a key part of the show anymore, but the idea of Sal being in that chair, good fucking lord. That might be about one quarter of a notch above Ralph filling the thing. Doesn't get much worse than that. Don't get me wrong, for as fucked up in so many ways that Sal is I recognize he has positive and funny contributions to the show, but to the point of being in that chair... no way.

Anthony man, I feel ya. I know I've already mentioned this before, after all that's happened, Howard's REALLY disappointed me with how he's handled the "Artie topic" in general. To me it comes across as he got what he wanted/needed out of him for several years, and now he's just discarded in Howard's mind. I really can't comprehend why Artie can't be allowed to return for one friggin day just as a guest to tell his story that he even WANTS to tell. Really lame.

I guess the chick who Gary sent the videotape to all those years ago is kinda friends with Gary now. The funny thing is he wore a specific rock and roll shirt to get her attention and she never even noticed it. By the way, Crash, Gary tried for a production job with the NBA too, just as an FYI. And those free beer stories with TGIF are funny, but no way in hell would they do that now for legal reasons.

oh god I can't imagine. I mean like I said, yes I realize Sal gives positives to the show, but ultimately I think both he and Richard work best in small doses. The idea of the chair once occupied by both Jackie and Artie now being SAL? I have so much sympathy for that hot wife of his. It must be downright shameful being married to him sometimes, all the shit he's pulled. I know why he hasn't left yet, he's pretty much come right out and said he couldn't afford, what I don't understand is why SHE hasn't left yet with the kids.

Btw I've been watching this interview of the latest dumb young chick wanting to sell her virginity. First of all I love that they feel wearing wigs will completely protect their identity :lol But then also near the start when they're talking about other fucked up things from their small town, like 12 and 13yo girls getting pregnant, and saying it with this superior tone like "can you believe what some white trash will do?" meanwhile.... umm.... :rolleyes :lol If this girl seriously gets 7 figures from a dude I think I'll blow my brains out. And how about the Natalie chick from a couple years ago? Turns out she never winds up doing it, and STILL got $250k somehow? WTF??

I agree with this. Howard is emotionally inept and can't handle the seriousness of what Artie has gone through. He just doesn't get it. At this point, Artie should NOT return to the show to tell his story, he should reserve it for a great interview with someone who can wrap their head around severe depression....which Howard obviously can't despite years and years of therapy. :rolleyes

Basically no one on the show seems to have any respect for Artie. Listen, I know, not too many drug addicts may deserve respect but jesus, it's not like Artie hasn't tried to get his shit together. He's been completely demonized.

I think Gary is doing the right thing, no matter how much shit he gets. He's out there hustling up the green and his next move, Techno Beaver, producing, he'll be fine and so won't the rest. If they don't have their ducks in a row, tough shit. No different than the rest of us who have to worry about where they'll be in a year.

Oh I thought, didn't it come out a couple years ago that Gary gets like $500k a year?

But yea as I've said before, quite frankly it's irresponsible on Howard's behalf to (& especially now) be this close, a friggin month away with the decision not made, for the sake of all these people under him that need to make real and difficult decisions about their lives, the people that absolutely have to keep working, whereas he obviously never has to again for one single day.

sweet jesus. I think what I find most ironic is now here at a point where the show overall is certainly on the lower end of its legacy on continual quality, if this deal is true he'd wind up getting paid twice as damn much per year as he has been at Sirius.

The show not being live kind of takes away from the grandeur. No callers takes away an entire dimension of the show. No more back and forth with Jeff the Drunk or Eric the Midget. That's some of my favorite stuff on the show. Plus if it's taped I'm sure it will be in a recording studio which means no real office environment which takes away the Sal and Richard dynamic. I dunno, honestly, I feel like if they aren't going to do it at Sirius it's not worth doing. That's the ideal situation for the show. Anything else at this point would be a step backwards.

Listen, I think he should be done. As a listener for over 20 years I can honestly say I think we've heard the best that he has to offer at this point in time. He's been miserable and as much fun as Sirius has been and can be, he's just plain old burnt out. Without Artie to float things............. yea, maybe someone else could take Artie's chair successfully but Howard doesn't have the gumption himself.

I do turn off the show. A lot. I didn't say it was horrible now, just that I think Howie needs a break from radio, he's burnt out on the schedule, the format, his staff etc. There are funny moments but they are far and few between compared to previous years.

I truly hope he doesn't do another 3 or 5 year stint at Sirius. He should take a break, explore other possibilities and eventually work the 2-3 day work week he dreams of.

To me the show has always had its highs and lows, and it hasn't been any different to me lately. However like Sabean says, "This is the greatest show on earth" I think whatever he decides to do will be his last run on air. He still wants to be on which gives me hope that he will take one last shot and then retire. Plus I would really hate to see the show end this way, there hasn't been any planning on a crazy celebration, I would want something to celebrate the end.

I was just listening to some of the stuff today on best of where Gary and Howard were talking the future of the show. Everyone said they seem worried and Howard wished he could announce a deal, but isn't sure of anything at this point. The irony is if this were any other show, Howard would go on the air daily and blast the nonsense of the contract almost up and no one knows whats going on. Stern says he's trying to work some stuff out for everyone, TV people too but it's not coming together. I kinda believe it, hence no Xmas push yet.

I keep thinking I'll logon to CNN news or the website and see a bullet with "Report: Stern leaving Sirius" or something like that.

By the way, everyone should ask for the Booey book for Xmas. Quickest read ever. And you're all hardcore fans so I think you'll enjoy it.

Damn only 6 shows left. I think the writings on the wall with Sirius. You have to figure something would have been said, but nothing. It seems as though Sirius isn't giving in since they may feel Stern has nowhere else to go. But they may also be waiting until the break to really get down to business.

The one thing that bothers me most about the money is how hypocritical he is, just that he's always SUPER cagey about how much actual bank he gets, yet anytime there's a guest in and the topic comes anywhere near money, he presses them so hard to "tell the truth" about how much money they make per year/project/whatever.

Honestly in this way sometimes I feel like Howard in how he'd always reacted to the Artie drug news that he constantly believed what he was simply told that everything was okay. Because I always believe anytime there's a 'situation' like this on the show I believe it was entirely real. Maybe I'm incredibly naive, I just can't see Howard always making that move.

Plus, while granted I haven't heard it yet, there's just no way Sal's that good of an actor.

Alright just some random rumblings after listening a little of the show yesterday and today. Obviously yesterday was an older show.

I don't understand what Howard and Robin were talking about when Christian Bale lost his cool on T-Salvation, but stayed in character. They said he blew up at the set in an American accent. No he didn't. Not only did he speak in his normal Australian accent, but they replayed the bit on the show and he's clearly speaking in his Aussie voice. You could even make a stretch that it sounded British. But it certainly didn't sound American. Anyone else catch that and wonder what they were talking about?

Also, kinda weird listening to the show this morning about how Robin might not be back. You gotta think that Stern talked to her before re-signing but they make it seem like Stern had no clue that Robin is still waiting for her deal to go through. They have the same agent---how could they all be so clueless and not on the same page? Like, is it really possible that Howard re upped for 5 more years but Robin won't get a deal? Weird radio for sure.

I am calling a bluff on Robins part, she is probably working that angle to get what she wants from Sirius. She has been saying she had something in the works for a while and all we have seen so far is that stupid vegan cook show online.

But I do agree its pretty weird that Stern is the only one that has a contract, the rest will have to fend for themselves, which kind of sucks, but Stern got what he wants, and thats all that matters to him, :lol

In the old days, I think this is the way it was done before too, everyone had to work out their own contract.

Horrible bit with wayy too much buildup. Best part of today's show was Howard's feeling on Artie. He is still leaving a door open...

Pete asked Howard about Artie being brought up on the show and how Howard jokes about it. He asked if Artie has been insulting him or something. Howard said he hasn't at all. Howard said he's very careful about what he says about Artie. He said he will never forget the feeling that shook him when he got the call about Artie and what he did to himself. Howard said it rocked him profoundly. Howard said he did a lot of self examination and asked if he had something to do with that. Howard said his conclusion is that he loves Artie and he gave so much to the show. Howard said he will always be grateful for that. Howard said Artie is a gentleman and he's funny. He said that when the life and death thing came to him he said he would not go on the airwaves and do anything to upset him or rock his world. He needs the love of his family and friends and he needs to get better.

Howard said he can't sit there and make jokes about Artie. He said he doesn't want him to be offended by anything. He said he's walking a tight rope. Pete said it's been a year now. Howard said he's imagining that he has a lot of recovery to do. He said that he's not sure if the show is good or bad for Artie. He can't make those decisions.

Howard said he went through a lot of emotional turmoil over that whole thing. Howard said he had no idea that Artie was in that kind of trouble. He said that Artie called him but he will not reveal what he said to him. Pete asked if he's still an entertainer. Howard said he assumes he is. Pete said that if Artie recovers and wants his job back on the show, would he consider it. Howard said he wouldn't know where to begin with that. Howard said he's not sure when Artie is on drugs. He said that when he was showing up to work people would ask if he could tell he was on drugs. Howard said he couldn't tell and that bothers him.

Howard said they're talking live and death and he wants Artie to live a long life. He said he used to tell Artie he had a good thing going there and it was the greatest. Howard said they didn't have the pressure of regular radio and they were just laughing and getting paid well. Artie liked living in Jersey and he thought that he had it good. He had his own situation going there.

Howard said Artie is the best and he's a beautiful guy. He said he loves Artie. Pete said that some people think he was forced to love him for the show. Howard said that's not the case. He said Artie is great. He said he wouldn't even say he'll never be back. Howard said he doesn't want to do that. Howard said he can't be cavalier about this whole thing.

Howard said he had Artie on the phone to talk to Pete. He put him on and it was actually Sal and Richard playing clips of Artie talking to Pete another time on the phone. Pete was either playing along or he fell for it. He was arguing with the clips. They had Artie calling him a fucking douche bag and things like that. Pete said that he'd had enough of that. Howard told him that it was tape of Artie. Pete said he thought he had motivated him to call back in. Howard said he knew he was falling for it. Pete said he really thought it was him. Howard said he was yelling at a tape. Pete said ''fuck that guy anyway...'' Pete said the guy is a scumbag.

Howard told Pete it really was a tape. Pete said ''whatever'' and hung up. Howard thought that he was in on it and would have gotten the joke.

Hhhhhhhhmmmmm. I think it's true that Howard absolutely can NOT deal with Artie's suicide attempt. Therefore, I don't think he can deal with Artie.

Well you can essentially get that, every single part of the saga so far from back in like 2007 or whenever it started is still out there to be downloaded from the usual suspects.

I saw Craig Gass a couple days ago on his facebook talking about how the one section that just aired looked kinda in depth at his time in the Jackie Chair and I'm really looking forward to checking that out, because there was one morning in particular (& I found out from asking Gass himself on Twitter that it was sometime in 2001), it was definitely within the top 5 of the wildest laughter I've ever had from listening to any particular Stern show. It was during the news, and he was going on this extended riff doing Al Pacino's baby, and somehow Steven Seagal comes into the story, that he's trying to molest the baby or something, I remember I almost had to pull off to the side of the road in LA traffic I was crying from laughing so hard. (and I don't think it was that exact morning, but around that same general time Vinny Favale called in literally just to say the same thing I did, he had to pull over and stop the car he was laughing so much)

I meant to bring that up since I just read about it in a wrestling newsletter, of all places (Hogan and Bubba are friends). I didn't hear anything about this. Then again, there wasn't a lot of buzz about Howard re-upping (some news clips, but nothing major). I'm sure something will come of it, like Jay Thomas or something else for cheaper programming.

I have no problem at all with Bubba's show being gone, as I'm sure I've said before I've never liked Bubba one bit, he's a pompous asshole who's just a lame, pale imitation of the most outrageous parts of Howard. This always seemed so obvious to me, making me all the more surprised Howard brought him into the fold to begin with.

And yea now that they're officially back on for another 5 years, they've absolutely gotta fill that extra chair on a regular basis, for the show to have any hope of picking back up at all close to where it once was (just please for the love of god, not Sal :p)

I think the idea was when Stern got on Sirius that he needed big name talent with a following to help fill his programming. He heard a couple of Bubba's shows, realized he had a following in Florida and was currently banned from terrestrial radio. But anyone like that comes off like a Howard Stern ripoff.

The next Howard Stern will be nothing like Howard at all.

Pretty good article on Bubba and Sirius:

http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_media_siriusxm

From the article:

Bubba blamed management's penny-pinching on its obsession with striking rich deals with Hollywood, sports and music personalities who have name recognition but no discernible talent for radio. Sirius XM, for example, pays Winfrey about $18 million a year and Stewart roughly $7 million.

He has a valid point.
