To answer your -how to read- tabs question: Think if you were holding your guitar, the string on top (6th/E-string/Lowest) would be at the BOTTOM of the tab. So it's kind of backwards. Since you are a beginner, use the 2 fingers most comfortable for you for the verse that is, but eventually practice how to play songs with the "correct" fingering. You won't have to move your hand nearly as much. Good luck bud.

I've always played the chorus as:

I know, but it's easier when your a beginner to just play A.

I sorta disagree on Grey Street being easy for beginners. It took me a while to catch on to muting those 2 middle strings. I think a better beginner song would be Proudest, Typical, Watchtower (not DMB, I know), or maybe Diggin' A Ditch.

Definitely Proudest, Typical verse, Watchtower...and crash was one of the first songs I learned. The stretch is a pain...but not too bad. 41 isn't too bad either, excpet for the intro. The verse/chorus aren't hard to play...but can be tough to play like Dave (of course :p ). Lover Lay Down isn't too bad either.

Grey Street/Billies Chorus aren't hard but they're hard to play in the style Dave does (different fingers, not a 1+2 slide like I started out with).

Go with The Stone or maybe Satellite....j/k

You may want to also give nancies a shot or even Bartender or DDTW if you can get it down to drop D easily...

Good luck.....2 years ago I was clueless.....now people actually ask me to play for them....weird. Practice, practice, practice, and if all else fails practice some more.

Never forget your pinky. The littlest guy on the team but he adds so much. Took the longest to get him to cooperate but once he did it was never the same.

Now i have noodled with my guitar for about a year now and have been able to play bits and pieces of many dmb songs (i can get huge stretches down like for the intro to jimi thing) but i can never get the songs to come together too well, tranisitioning from chorus to verse and stuff like that. Like I can't get the chorus for Grey St to sound good at all. Could someone give me some tips on how to do this. I also can't seem to get a good strumming pattern down... any suggestions on this?

I hear ya man. I'm about 2 and half years in and the songs are finally starting to come together....along with the strumming. The guitar is really learned in stages. Just keep playing and practicing. I'd also recommend trying to stick to one song at a time after a while. Learn little bits here and there in the beginning but after a year or so truly dedicate yourself to the few songs you want to completely learn. I mean....I can say I know like 80 Dave songs but in reality I can only really play maybe 10 or so completely and correctly. Also study the videos on dmbtabs and try and get some live shows on video. Watching the man in action is the best way to see how its done. Keep at it and it'll all come together.

stretch on jimi thing intro?on billies i mean... the nature intro:
E:-------------------------------
B:-------------------------------
G:-6------4------6------4---6/7--
D:-2------2------2------2---x----
A:-x------x------x------x---x----
E:-5------5------5------5---5/7--

Anyway, here is a vid of me attempting to play some of Crush, I had the trasistions down pretty well, but this does not show that too well. The vid is only about 2 min so please watch it and critique (any tips on how to get rid of the generic strumming). Thanks.

I know what you mean man. i can pick and strum the verses to crash perfectly but when i go into the "crash into me yeah" part everyone is like you need more practice. Or i can get the slide in big eyed fish but not the chorus. i think we need to just listen and play along more. BTW does anybody else think that playing along with the band helps?

I'de say just listen to the strumming pattern and that will help you with transitions and making it sound more like the song

As for muting the 2 middle strings in Grey Street. This was one of the first songs I learned on guitar, and I learned to pluck the low E and G string with your thumb and index fingers. I know that's not how Dave plays it, and it makes it a bit harder to play up to speed, but it does help the muting problem a lot.

What is the strumming pattern on proudest monkey? Can anyone help? I think I have the fingering on the frets down, I just cant tell which strings to hit in which order. From my ear it seems like you only use the top three.
Thanks in advance.

I've always played the chorus as:

E:-----------2----3--
B:-2----2----3----0--
G:-3----2----2----0--
D:-4----2----0----0--
A:-4----4---------2--
E:-2--------------3--

I bet it's a typo, but that first chord as you have it is definitely wrong. It's the same formation, just the whole thing moved down so it begins on the A string. I've actually never played the second chord that way and i like it. I also like playing the third chord as:

E:--0
A:--3
G:--2
D:--0
A:--0
E:--2

Just a personal preference. I almost never play the D chord in the triangle type formation, it sounds way too cheesy.

6th = E, 5th = A, 4th = D, 3rd = G, 2nd = B, 1st = High E
i always remember E (even) A (after) D (dinner) G (giant) B (boys) E (eat) from lowest to highest

D------6----6-------6--------------
A---------6-----4------------------
E-4-4-------------------------------

just repeat that, and in the future, dmbtabs.com has it all

i'm not sure i understand what you're asking. If a song calls for the closed formation of a D bar chord at 10 ( or starting on A string at 5) then i play it closed. I just usually switch the common triangle fingered D chord with the chord i tabbed above because i like it better, thats all. It also follows dave's tendency to use low notes with high notes, while the triangle D is just a bit too bright.

As far as other triangle shapes up and down the fret board?.... I must confess that beyond a few variations of standard A->G and chords dave uses, my knowledge of other chord formations is limited. I sorta taught myself, so i have a limited number of things i can/know how to do.

chr35919
04-24-2006, 03:52 PM
I just meant that the triangle shape can be moved all the way down the fret board replacing the original open d string with the corresponding root note for whatever chord you want to play...

if d is XX0323 then e is XX2454( or X76454) and so on down the fretboard. I just meant that the "triangle" shape is useful. You could also play e like
XXX454
