I've been looking all over and can't figure out what kind of mandolin Boyd's been using. It looks like it says Fender on it but Fender doesn't make any that look like it and it isn't listed on the bands equipment page...

The range and size of the mandolin makes it very difficult for it to project its sound. The reason a mandolin has 8 strings is so that it can sustain better. Each pairing of strings you see are the same string. If a mandolin is made primarily for electric purposes (Boyd's), then the doubling of strings is unnecessary. Some manufactures prefer the chorus-like effect and keep the 8-string model, but you will see many 4-string electrical mandolins.
Yes, it is a mandolin.. although I am also not sure of the make

The writing on the headstock doesn't quite look like it says Fender. I'll look around.

It's called a Mandocaster. Fender doesn't make them any more. Basically a solid-body electric mandolin. Check out eBay and you'll see a couple up there right now.
